     Noel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/noel_danmemo.jpg
Voiced by: Yuka Nukui

A little girl who stumbles into the Hostess of Fertility, Bell and the girls quickly take a shine to her and shelter her while trying to figure out her past.

  • Healing Hands: She's capable of relieving Bell and the Hostess of Fertility waitresses of a curse that prevents healing.
  • Name Amnesia: When Syr found her, she couldn't remember having any name, thus she had to settle on being named Noelle.
  • Walking Spoiler: The reveal that she is a High Class Spirit.

    Vitteaux/Vito
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vitteauxpng.jpg

Appears in the campaign Winter Magic Miracle. He makes a come back in the Grand Tale Astrea Record campaign, set seven years in the past.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He may seem like a kind and casual man, but he's really a sadistic murderer who is part of Evilus.
  • Blood Knight: He is a murderer that kills adventurers to sate his blood lust. This is best shown in the Grand Tale Astrea Record story where he participates in Erebus's Hell on Earth campaign.
  • Child Hater: He despises children, as shown when he threatened to beat Noelle.
  • Curtains Match the Window: He has red eyes and hair.
  • Dark Is Evil: He has Dark Red hair and wears Black Clothes and is a sadistic murderer.
  • Evil Redhead: He has dark red hair and happens to be a murderer.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Has this as his default expression.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In the last new event featured in the game, he takes Noelle as a travel companion with Ryu and Bell positing on him being redeemed.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: He is one of the most evil humans to appear in the Dan Machi franchise. Committing various atrocities that range from mass murder to attempting to fuse a child to a monster he intends to sic on the world.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: He talks about the world being a being a messed up imperfect place needing to be destroyed in favor of a newer better one, but this claim is undermined by the fact that he both has no qualms about killing innocent adventurers and that he is a cruel child hater. If the Grand Tale Astrea Record campaign is anything to go by, he willingly participated in Erebus's Hell on Earth scheme.
  • Psycho Supporter: In the Grand Tale Astrea Record story, he participates in the god Erebus's Hell on Earth campaign.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has red eyes, and is a sadistic murderer.
  • Sadist: He relishes in the murder of helpless and innocent adventures, even beating one to death. He continues to show this during Erebus's Hell on Earth campaign during the 'Grand Tale Astrea Record'' story.
  • We Will Meet Again: Once the heroes destroy the tainted spirit he tried to unleash, he declared that the next time they meet, things will be different. He repeats this after being defeated once in the Grand Tale Astrea Record campaign.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He threatened to beat Noelle at one point. He also intended to fuse her with a world-destroying monster.

Argonaut Story

    Argonaut

Argonaut

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danmemo_argonaut_2.png
A boisterous young lad with dreams of becoming a hero who can act as a beacon of hope to a world with none of it. He rushes off to the capital with his adopted sister Fina when he hears that the king plans on crowning whoever can pass the Ritual of Selection a hero. Unfortunately, he's foolhardy and utterly incompetent at fighting, forcing Fina to pick up the slack.
  • Always Save the Girl: His heroic instincts and skirt-chasing tendencies compel him to attempt this every time, even though he's only good as a decoy.
  • Always Someone Better: Even after gaining incredible power from forging a contract with Jupiter, Elmina still kicks his ass as the superior warrior.
  • Black Comedy: A Reconstructed Trope, as expected of the hero of a comedy. He dies trying to slay a lion, despite surviving the Kingdom of Lucrious and the Minotaur. Despite this, everyone who heard laughed over this and carried on his will to create a new age of heroes.
  • Bling of War: For his debut as the hero, he pilfers a set of valuable armor from the castle's armory. The bling is intentional, as Argo knows that people will judge a book by its cover and will be more likely to listen to a person who is impressively dressed than someone who isn't. This proves essential in convincing others that he's the successor of "General Minos", as his armor, the lightning powers granted by Jupiter, and the "general's" bloody helmet sell his story to the citizens.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He hits on girls constantly, but they almost always rebuke his flirtations.
  • Childish Older Sibling: While Fina is polite, responsible, and a skilled mage, Argonaut is a shameless skirt-chaser who is useless in battle and never seems to be able to keep his mouth shut. As a result, Fina is usually the one to rein him in when he's acting foolish in public. This becomes increasingly downplayed as the story goes on, as while Fina is thinking solely about the present, Argonaut is thinking about the future and how best to make everyone smile.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: He's a shameless skirt-chaser and can't help but flirt with every pretty girl he meets, but he's disturbed when he discovers women who aren't smiling and never disrespects them.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome:
    • Throughout the hero selection ritual, the other challengers distract him by sending him after people who may or may not actually be in need of help. While he's aware that they're trying to impede him, he can't turn a blind eye in case someone is actually in trouble.
Argo: Fina told me they were deceiving me, but... what if there really is someone in need of a helping hand? Then, I shall by the moronic and ignorant jester. I'd rather be a joke than leave someone behind!
    • This has been a habit of his for a while, and he acknowledges his inability to leave a crying person behind while convincing Fina to help Aria escape.
Argo: It'll be just like old times, Fina. Perhaps I'll never learn to leave a crying person behind. It's my selfish desire to make them smile.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: He's pitifully weak in a brawl, comes from the sticks with no notable parentage, and struggles to get respect from others even as a Magnetic Hero.
  • Consummate Liar: He's an excellent storyteller and it's hard for people to tell if he's lying or just being a Cloudcuckoolander. This proves essential when he spins a story of him being "General Minos'" successor. Anyone present at the battlefield knows he's telling Blatant Lies, but they can't expose him without revealing the truth behind the general's identity.
  • Determinator: When he sets out to do something, nothing will make him back down. Not even a broken knee, not being branded a traitor to be captured, not even the threat of execution will deter him from trying to make a girl smile.
  • Distressed Dude: Due to his complete lack of combat ability, he's often the one in need of being rescued despite being the Leeroy Jenkins who rushes in first.
  • Dual Wielding: He's usually depicted wielding both the Radiant Sword of Thunder and the Magic Fire Sword (aka Minotan).
  • The Dulcinea Effect: If Argo sees a girl down in the dumps, he can't help but try to cheer them up, even if it means staring down the most fearsome assassin in the kingdom. Fina lampshades this, but he remains set on helping Aria no matter what.
Fina: Why would you risk yourself for someone you just met...?
Argo: Indeed, I know nothing about her background. But I know she has fled from her fate! A home without a smile - that's not the place she should go back to!
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Well, he was a Non-Action Guy prior to receiving the Radiant Sword of Thunder, but he's overwhelmingly strong against normal people with it in hand. Unfortunately, the backlash of using such a weapon ends up blinding him, and he fails to defeat the Minotaur on his own even with it and the Fire Magic Sword in-hand.
  • Famed In-Story: Long after his death, his story became immortalized as the "Heroic Legend", an extremely popular fairy tale of tragedy turning into comedy. Argonaut himself became known as the "hero of the dawn" for uniting people once and for all against the monsters. The gods, entertained by Argo's story, decided to descend to the lower world, ending the ancient times and beginning the age of gods.
  • Frame-Up: He gets framed by the King for Princess Ariadne's disappearance when the King himself is responsible for that so that no one questions where she went once she's sacrificed.
  • Fragile Speedster: The only thing he's good at is running away. A single punch from Fina sends him flying, and he generally spends most fights fleeing and ducking for cover. Even while carrying Aria in a bridal carry, he easily outpaces the royal guard. He gains outright Super-Speed with the Radiant Sword of Thunder in-hand, easily cutting down an entire line of soldiers in the blink of an eye, surprising even himself.
Argo: Mwahahahahahah! Do not underestimate the speed of Argonaut! He's as fast as a wild rabbit!
  • Guile Hero: Despite acting like he always has his head in the clouds, Argo is keenly perceptive and an excellent con artist. For instance, when thrust into a combat trial to determine the hero, he uses Fina as a distraction before simply running away until time ran out, leaving him and Fina as two of the last people standing. Later on, he makes a show of dancing and flirting with Aria in the street to draw massive crowds of jealous townsfolk that would impede the search parties coming after them.
  • Large Ham: He makes a show of everything he does and spontaneously bursts into laughter when he's feeling boastful or pleased.
  • Loser Protagonist: He starts out as a pathetically weak skirt-chaser who seems to be unable to divorce dreams from reality and constantly has to be saved by his sister, the only person to give him any kind of respect. He doesn't even deny it when others call him a failure or scum.
  • Magnetic Hero: Others repeatedly point out that one of his only strengths is to make others want to help him with his grandiose speeches and unerring optimism. Even the most cynical, nihilistic people find themselves swayed by his silver tongue, kindness, and ability to cling to hope at a time that had none. He needs it too, as without allies, he would have never accomplished a fraction of what he did.
  • The Needs of the Many: Defied. Aria points out that Argo could become a hero by turning her into the king, and that it would be the most logical thing to do: sacrificing one person for glory and the good of the many. Argo flatly disagrees and tells her that this is not the kind of hero he wants to be. Instead, he wants to be the person who saves one person who saves ten more.
Argo: How can I call myself a hero if I can't make even one girl smile? I must try.
Aria: Wrong... A hero will sacrifice one life for the greater good. That is the choice they must make for their glory.
Argo: That is the one way of thinking, but that's not the kind of hero I want to be! I must save one life to save the next ten! "Sacrificing one life to save many" does not sit well with me. Something about it is... flawed. You may call me a loon! But I truly believe saving one life one day will save hundreds!
  • Non-Action Guy: He's pathetically weak to the point that Fina is able to floor him with a single punch. As a result, he's only good for rallying people together and acting as a decoy. This ends when he takes up the Radiant Sword of Thunder and the Magic Flame Sword.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity:
    • At least part of his foolishness is an act designed to stop conflict and get people to laugh. During the hero selection trial, he runs off into the distance screaming about how he's going to find the princess before anyone else, breaking up a fight between Yuri and Galmus in the process.
    • When backed into a corner, the reader gets to see more of Argonaut's inner thoughts, which has him meticulously analyzing the encirclement he, Fina, and Aria are trapped in and considers all possible outcomes before moving.
    • He acts unusually somber and serious after Fina gets captured to protect him and he has to be rescued by Orna and Crozzo. Orna lampshades this, prompting Argo to snap back to his usual, cheery self.
Argo: Hmm? What's wrong? You look like you're mad at me.
Orna: You have been acting different since you woke. What are you trying to pull? Where is the foolish clown, Argonaut? It... isn't like you.
Argo: Mm... have I? Perhaps I have... Maybe it's the fatigue... A moment, please. I will return to my normal self in a second. Testing, testing! One, two!
Orna: So you were not born a clown... It's more like a facade you act.
Argo: Haha! I have no idea what you mean! I am, and always have been, the same old Argonaut! Now I'm back!
  • The Pollyanna: He's actually referred to as this in the story, with his inability to succumb to despair no matter how many setbacks he faces.
  • The Power of Love: Invokes this during his final duel with the Minotaur, claiming that there's nothing he can't do now that Princess Ariadne has declared that she loves him and wants to marry him. She denies the last part.
  • Rescue Romance: His efforts to rescue Princess Aria and get her to smile are what earn him her affections. In the end, it's she who rescues him from the minotaur, which he bitterly lampshades.
  • Riches to Rags: Orna insinuates that Argo is far too educated, eloquent, and idealistic to have been born in "nowheresville" like he insists, asking if he was the crown prince of a fallen country. He deflects the question rather than answering, saying that the tale of Argonaut needs no tragedies or misery, only comedy.
  • Reincarnation: He's all but said to be Bell's previous life.
  • Sad Clown: For all his comedic antics, it's implied that he's incredibly frustrated with his inability to save others directly, forcing him to resort to trickery and roundabout methods to help people and stop conflict. The story makes it increasingly clear over time that most of Argo's weirdness and stupidity is a carefully crafted act to hide this frustration and make others laugh. Crozzo also mentions that Argo has far too many responsibilities and burdens for any one man to hold, which is why he decides to help him out with whatever means necessary.
Argo: Stay strong... I must be the clown for a little bit longer... A little bit longer...
  • Shout-Out: His attacking the windmills as "giants" is a not-so-subtle reference to the most famous scene in Don Quixote and serves as an Establishing Character Moment for him.
  • Skyward Scream: Combined with a Big "NO!" after he fails to stop the royal guard from taking Aria back to the castle.
  • The Social Expert: Despite his buffoonery, Argo is an incredibly gifted orator who is unmatched in his ability to get others to help him, turning people who mocked him as a failure into staunch allies through careful word choice and his inability to back down when people's lives are on the line. Galmus even accuses him of having a silver tongue.
  • Third-Person Person: He often refers to himself in the third-person while boasting to others, though he tends to bounce back and forth between pronouns.
Argo: [to Aria] Don't worry about a thing, Princess! Just leave everything to this Argonaut! I will save you from your sorrow and fear!
  • Undignified Death: Can be argued to be A Good Way to Die. The epilogue of Fate of Hero says he simply died in his next adventure; in Knights of Fianna: Knight Glory, Ryulu explains to the knights it was a quest to defeat a monstrous lion—and she cheerfully says the monster took down Argonaut without breaking a sweat, much to Dim's dismay. Even so, the tale he left behind has given rise to more heroes.

    Fina

Fina

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fina_danmachi.png
Voiced by: Juri Kimura

Argo's adopted little sister and a half-elf. Although she's physically the younger of the two, she's often the one keeping him in check and doing most of the fighting because of how weak he is.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: She often acts like this because of Argo's flirting and clownish antics, apologizing to others on his behalf.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: A half-elf. Unlike present day, it's made her a target for Fantastic Racism ever since her childhood and until today.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Although her greatest asset is her ability to use magic, she isn't averse to hand-to-hand combat. A single punch from her is enough to leave Argo on the ground or send him flying across a room.
  • Pointy Ears: She has long, pointed ears due to being a half-elf.
  • Reincarnation: She is implied to be Lefiya's previous life.

    Yuri

Yuri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danmemo_yuri.png
Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto

A werewolf who comes to participate in the Ritual of Selection.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He keeps a cold and aloof attitude towards everyone, but it's blatant to anyone who's gotten to know him that he cherishes friends and family.
  • Reincarnation: He's almost certainly Bete's previous life.

    Elmina

Elmina

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elmina_danmachi.png
Voiced by: Minami Takahashi

The strongest warrior of the kingdom and the king's personal assassin, she stakes everything she has to protect her little sister Orna, who doesn't reciprocate her feelings at all.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Goes from having shoulder-length hair to a ponytail long enough to reach her waist during Knights of Fianna.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: Er, woman. Elmina is always wearing a veil on her face and the story takes a turn for the worse whenever she confronts Argo.
  • Multi-Melee Master: Although she wields a pair of daggers in combat, she's more than capable of beating her foes to death with her bare hands through her raw strength as an Amazon.
  • Reincarnation: She's heavily implied to be Tione's previous life.
  • Strong and Skilled: What makes her the most dangerous is that she's just as skilled as she is strong. Not only does her raw strength outclass even Argo's falna-backed abilities, but she's also been trained in constant fights to the death on Teleskyura. She can be stealthy, tricky, and overwhelmingly brutal all at once.
  • World's Best Warrior: Elmina is the strongest warrior of the kingdom with the exception of "General Minos". Even after Argo receives as falna from his contract with Jupiter, Elmina utterly thrashes him. Unsurprisingly, she's also the strongest Amazon of her generation.

    Galmus

Galmus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danmemo_garms.png
Voiced by: Kenji Nomura

An honorable Dwarf warrior.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Played with. He most certainly does know how strong he is, but puts up a ruse of underestimating his own strength to send Argonaut flying in order to save him from the King's Guards after the king framed him.
  • Younger Than He Looks: He looks like a middle-aged man, but he's still 18 years old.

    Ariadne

Ariadne

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danmemo_ariadne.png
Voiced by: Saori Onishi

The crown princess of the kingdom and Lucrious' only daughter. The participants in the Ritual of Selection are ordered to find and bring her to the palace, but Aria doesn't want to be found.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Argo calls her "Aria" for short while trying to help her keep a low profile. It sticks when the story is finally written down by Orna, with all remembering her as "Princess Aria".
  • Damsel in Distress: She's the object of Argo's affections and the princess he always dreamed of rescuing. Her desperate desire to live a normal life unshackled by duty is what draws him to her. And yet, at the very end, she's the one to rescue him from the minotaur when his overuse of the Radiant Sword of Thunder blinds him. He bitterly lampshades this but accepts her help anyways.
  • Expy: Of the Ariadne of Greek myth, the maiden doomed to be fed to the minotaur until rescued by the hero Theseus.
  • Stop, or I Shoot Myself!: To stop Elmina from killing Argonaut and Fina, she threatens to kill herself. Since Elmina needs to bring Ariadne back to the king alive, Elmina is forced to acquiesce.

    Ryulu

Ryulu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danmemo_ryuulu.png
Voiced by: Saori Hayami

A bard participating in the Ritual of Selection.
  • A-Cup Angst: Her violent response to having her chest called "flat as a piece of paper" is a not-so-subtle giveaway of her gender.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Subverted. When Argo asks whether Ryulu is a man or a woman, "they" laugh it off and say that "their" gender is shrouded in mystery. Argo is satisfied with that answer, as Ryulu's chest is as flat as a piece of paper. Ryulu responds by putting Argo in a painful arm lock, indicating that she's almost definitely a woman.
  • The Bard: States her role as one, wanting to bear witness to all the greatest stories and spreading hope and love through her songs in the dark times everyone is in. In fact, she is Wishe, one of the three great poets.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Light green hair and eyes.
  • Minored in Ass-Kicking: Ryulu insists she's merely a bard observing the events of the Ritual of Selection, but the fact that she's able to last through every single trial indicates that she's more than capable of handling herself. She displays a bit of this strength by nonchalantly putting Argonaut into an armlock after he called her chest flat.
  • Pointy Ears: She has the long and pointy ears that are characteristic of the elf race.
  • Reincarnation: Of Ryu, making it odd to see someone with her face smiling, talking bombastically, and not out there kicking butt.

    Orna

Orna

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danmemo_olna.png
Voiced by: Rie Murakawa

The Kingdom's fortune-teller and a personal aide to the king. She's dismissive of Argonaut at first, expecting him to fail miserably, but soon finds herself drawn to the helpless young lad.
  • The Cynic: She's thoroughly cynical about the fate of the Kingdom and Argonaut's chances of becoming a hero.
  • Fortune Teller: She is able to "read the stars". Subverted in that this was actually just a cover made up by the King of Lucrious for her to stay in the castle.
  • Replacement Goldfish: She spends most of the story acting as Elmina's sister despite thoroughly disliking her, and only near the climax is it revealed that Elmina has been using her as a replacement for her actual sister, whom she killed in cold-blood as part of the Amazons' bloodthirsty rituals. She's also this for her father's own wife, as Orna is heir to the throne as his eldest child, but she reminds him of her mother so much that he can't bear to sacrifice her, hiding Orna'a royal heritage and choosing to feed Aria to the minotaur instead.

    King of Lucrious

King of Lucrious

The king of the kingdom.

  • I Did What I Had to Do: He claims the many sacrifices of mortal lives, including that of his own family, to the minotaur are all necessary to protect his kingdom.
  • No Name Given: He's only referred to as "the king" because there's no actual name revealed for him.

    Crozzo

Crozzo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/crozzo_with_urus.png
Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya

The first Crozzo said to have been saved by a Spirit.
  • The Blacksmith: Due to receiving some of Urus' blood, Crozzo is able to create magic swords.
  • Cast from Lifespan: Overusing his ability to make magic swords causes his lifespan to become shorter.

    Jupiter

A powerful Spirit who refers to himself as the "Great Spirit", he waited for ages in a shrine looking to contract with someone worthy of his power. Unfortunately, he sounds like a creepy old man and prefers hot babes to heroes. But he begrudgingly decides to lend Argonaut his power... whether Argo wanted it or not.

  • Dirty Old Man: He'd much prefer it if his contractor was a beautiful young girl rather than a boy like Argonaut. Regardless, he finds Argonaut to be just androgynous enough to be acceptable and lends him his power anyways.
  • Shock and Awe: True to his name, his sword form is imbued with lightning, crackling with it wherever it's swung.
  • Super-Empowering: Anyone who holds him with be bestowed with physical abilities akin to an adventurer with a divine falna. Even when applied to the pathetically weak Argonaut, it's enough to make him move at lightning speed compared to everyone else and cut down armored knights in a single blow.

Nightmare Academia

    Aylis Navarre
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aylis_navarre.png
So you are done fooling around? Now forget about magic swords and read out page 127 about "Magic Fundamentals".

Appears in the campaign Nightmare Academia

  • Evil Teacher: Revealed as one in her final class where she orders her students to fight to the death.
  • Graceful Loser: Accepts her loss with dignity upon being mortally wounded.
  • No Body Left Behind: The moment she's slain, she dissolves into dark magic.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: She wears an identical dress in color (Red and Black) and appearance to Aiz's Starving Mind attire in the game, and towards the end of the campaign, she's revealed to be an Evil Teacher.

    Tiones Walpurgis

Tiones Walpurgis, Also known as the Spirit of the Dream

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tiones_walpurgis_evil_beauty.PNG

Appears in the campaign Nightmare Academia

  • Beauty Is Bad: She may look as beautiful as Tione, whom she resembles, but is really an evil teacher.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She may seem like a kind-hearted teacher, but she really has no care in the world for the lives of Bell and company.
  • Dark Is Evil: Has Black hair and wears a dress of the same color. She is the main antagonist of the campaign.
  • Load-Bearing Boss: Her demise causes the Dream World's collapse.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: She claims she and her fellow spirits created the dream world to be a paradise for their kind and those of pure of heart. This claim however is undermined by several of their actions such as a number of the people dragged into the world having their personalities rewritten for the worse from Eina becoming much more arrogant and mean spirited to Filvus being made into a blood thirsty Yandere; implementing a school class that has victims kidnapped by their world fight each other to the death and finally Tiones herself draining the last of the world's energy during her breakdown and its verge of collapse.
Fels: This so-called paradise is a nightmare of death. Happiness promised here is false and temporary. Acknowledge your sins, Dream Violas.
  • One-Winged Angel: She transforms into a dark skeletal ghost for the final fight of the event story.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: She is the president of the Magic Pharmacy Council and the Mandragora Conservation Alliance. She is also the headmaster and the Great Wizard of Darkness.
  • Villainous Breakdown: She gradually loses her composure when the heroes start regaining their memories and personalities from the overwriting process. She finally snaps after a restored Filvis and Lefiya unleash their magic on her, which prompts her to go One-Winged Angel.
  • "You!" Exclamation: She screams this about the moment Lefiya and Filvus unleash powerful blasts of magic on her.

    Baldo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baldo_9.png
Welcome, Bel and his friends!

  • Evil All Along: He was helpful to the students of the academia, but later on he's revealed to be both the Sinister Wolf and one of the pillars maintaining the dream world.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Wears one similar to that of Bors Elder, whom he resembles. Given how the dream world works, his resemblance may not be a coincidence.
  • Falsely Reformed Villain: He was said to have once both been an illegal gambler and an escapee from bounty hunters. Now he's guarding the cave. He's later revealed to be the Sinister Wolf that feasts on flesh and blood.
  • Leave No Witnesses: When Bell, Liliruca, and Eina discover he's the Sinister Wolf, he attempts to slaughter them so no cat can get out of the bag.
  • Offscreen Villainy: He proclaims to have feasted on the flesh and blood of people he killed, but that was only mentioned prior to his boss fight.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: Compared to Bete and Rose, he fits the werewolf trope better as he's a man who turns into a wolf.

Winter Reverie

    Talvi

Talvi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/talvi_danmemo.png
Voiced by: Natsumi Hioka

The princess of the remote country of Veltane.

  • Genki Girl: She's exuberant and energetic, loudly running around Orario to find Haruhime and Bell and engaging in every activity with gusto. This takes a much darker turn when it's revealed that she is going to be a sacrifice, meaning that her energy is derived from how she's trying to make the best of the last few days available to her.
  • Heinz Hybrid: She claims to have Renard blood in her, despite having visible antlers instead of fox ears. It turns out that she has thirty different types of beast-human blood, having been specifically bred for the purpose of subduing the Swamp King via a Human Sacrifice.
  • Horned Humanoid: One of the things making her a hybrid is the visibility of horns.
  • Human Sacrifice: She was intended as one in an attempt to secure the safety of the country of Veltane from the Swamp King after it had invaded. Fortunately there was a way to destroy the creature for good before the sacrifice can happen.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: Wears an off-the-shoulders dress.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: She's the princess of Veltane and has never left its borders.
  • Stepford Smiler: Upon Talvi's departure, Haruhime notices that Talvi is giving the smile of someone who is resigned to their fate, a face all-too familiar to Haruhime. This is what kickstarts the conflict of the plot, as Haruhime begs everyone she knows to help her save Talvi from a similar fate.

Voiced by: Jun'ya Enoki

The captain of the Vera Familia and one of Talvi's bodyguards.

  • An Arm and a Leg: He blows up his left arm with a spell to defeat Ryu.
  • The Captain: He captains the Vera Familia.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He's noticeably short for an elf and is teased for it by the knights he oversees. Despite this, he's at least as powerful as a Level 4 Adventurer.

    Ridari

Ridari

Voiced by: Ryōta Suzuki

The Vice-Captain of the Vera Familia.

  • Blind Weaponmaster: He's blind and frighteningly good with a sword, to the point of leaving Takemikazuchi in awe.
  • Disability Superpower: According to Takemikazuchi, Ridari's skills are refined because of his blindness rather than in spite of it. As a result, he has no trouble navigating a large, noisy city like Orario, can "smell" Bell's Argonaut skill, and can draw his sword faster than an adventurer can see.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Due to being blind, he wears a blindfold that covers his eyes all the time.
  • Handicapped Badass: Although he cannot see, he's at least as powerful as a hardened Level 4 Adventurer, easily overpowering Bell even after he uses Argonaut while Haruhime boosted him with Uchide no Kozuchi.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: He doesn't draw his sword until his enemy enters his attack range. Once they do, he swings so quickly that they don't even see it leave the scabbard.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: He always announces the number of steps it takes for his opponent to enter his attack range before they inevitably do and get struck down.

    Vera

Vera

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vera_danmemo.png
Voiced by: Ayaka Suwa

  • Brutal Honesty: As a goddess of truth, she's compelled to answer every question given her thoroughly and honestly. But she revels in being as sarcastic, blunt, and unpleasant as possible because it's more fun to her.
  • Facial Markings: She has a red, triangle-shaped marking beneath each eye.
  • Hot Goddess: Goddesses in general are considered beautiful by default for mortals, and Vera's buxom figure makes her no exception.
  • It Amused Me: All of her actions are pushed by her desire for entertainment. She even laughs off Takemikazuchi's and Hestia's accusations that she's the reason for Talvi's fate, saying that she simply gave them the information. The people of Veltane decided on their own what to do with it.
  • Jerkass Gods: She takes delight in answering questions as truthfully but as sarcastically and rudely and possible, making things more difficult for her own familia solely to make herself laugh.

Astraea Record

    Astraea
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/astraea_danmemo.png
Voiced by: Mai Nakahara

Goddess of justice and the stars and the founder of the Astraea Familia, a familia of female warriors who fight to protect Orario's peace and create a more just world.

  • Frontline General: Despite the dangers of having a god in harm's way, Astraea can't bear to see people harmed while she hides in the safety of Orario's inner circle, going around to direct volunteers, treat the wounded, and offer advice throughout the chaos of Orario's darkest days.
  • Hot Goddess: As per standard, she's considered impossibly beautiful by mortal standards, though Hermes makes special note of her beauty especially for a virgin goddess.
  • Loved by All: Astraea is beloved by pretty much everyone for her kindness, generosity, and tireless crusade to help the weak and helpless. After sections of Orario are leveled by Evilus' bombing spree, onlookers are aghast when she asks for a sword to save those poisoned by shrapnel by amputating their limbs, saying that there's no way that they can allow a goddess to dirty herself like that.
  • Non-Action Guy: As a goddess, Astraea bears little fighting capability on her own, but her ability to calmly instruct her children as well as the other people fighting to defend Orario make her a valuable Mission Control.

    Eren (Unmarked Spoilers)

Eren

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/erebus_as_eren.jpg
Eren
Click here for his true identity.

A strange god who stumbles into Orario with only 444 Valis in savings. An amiable enough fellow on the surface, but he soon gets on the Astraea Familia's nerves.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He seems like a nice person, but his sweet exterior belies his true colors as someone who likes to poke and prod at the flaws and insecurities of others, intentionally pissing off the Astraea Familia by boldly saying that their ideals of justice are empty and meaningless. Then it's revealed that he's an evil god named Erebus working with Evilus to plunge Orario into chaos... then after all this, it's Subverted when he's shown to be a Well-Intentioned Extremist who believes that the only way a hero could be born is through hardship.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: While he causes a lot of death and carnage with his Hell on Earth campaign, he doesn't seem to be truly evil and only acts the way he does because he believes it is truly necessary.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Once he reveals his true identity as the god of darkness, Erebus, he begins to call himself the "Evil God Erebus" and refers to his path as "absolute malevolence".
  • The Chessmaster: He orchestrates Evilus' Hell on Earth campaign and has everyone dancing to whims. Not once does anyone suspect his true motive of creating a hero to oppose him, not even his own child, Vitteaux, until the very end.
  • Dark Is Evil: Once he shows his true colors as Erebus, he wears a black coat and pants that are complimented by mostly black hair, and he is the instigator in Evilus's Hell on Earth Campaign during the Grand Tale Astrea Record story.
  • Eyes Always Shut: His eyes are almost always closed, which gives him a rather pathetic appearance at first, but they soon point to his shiftiness and sharp tongue.
  • God of Evil: Eren's true identity is Erebus, a primordial god of darkness and considered a god of evil within Evilus' inner circle.
  • Good Feels Good: He discusses this with Ryu, asking if she protects the peace for the self-satisfaction she gets from it and mocking her when she says she's in it purely for altruistic reasons.
  • Graceful Loser: He's happy to have been defeated by the forces of Orario, as it shows that heroes did indeed rise up to oppose him as he planned.
  • I Gave My Word: He promises Ryu that he'll call off his forces if she just let Asfi die, but also swears that many innocents will be slaughtered if Ryu moves to help her. As a test of whether or not Ryu's vision of justice relies on The Needs of the Many, he probably would have kept his word had Ryu not rushed to help her.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Erebus claims to love independent women if only because he can slowly break them down into inconsolable despair, as he tries with Ryu. That said, he's genuinely pleased when Ryu rises above his taunts and attempts to break her, and it's likely that he was simply challenging her and playing up his image as a wicked god.
  • Walking Spoiler: He's the keystone of the entire Astraea Record story, and it's nearly impossible to talk about him in any depth without spoiling his involvement in it.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He orchestrates the deaths of countless adventurers, gods, and civilians for the sake of creating a crisis that would produce heroes strong enough to defend Orario in its darkest hour.

    Ardi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ardi_danmemo.png
Voiced by: Miku Itō

Shakti's younger sister and a Level 3 Adventurer of the Ganesha Familia. She's fast friends with Ryu and the rest of the Astraea Familia and believes in creating a world where people no longer have to suffer.

  • Action Girl: As Level 3 Adventurer, she's considered elite and extremely talented. Doubly so given that she's a member of the Ganesha Familia, who take down criminals in addition to hunting monsters in the Dungeon.
  • Foil: Her unending cheer, clear conscience, and ability to act without reservation mark her as a strong foil to her friend Ryu, who is consistently dour, self-doubting, and troubled.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: Downplayed. Ardee isn't dumb and is resolute in what she's fighting for, but she admits that she doesn't do a lot of the logistic or think very hard about what she does, leaving that to her older sister.
  • Nice Girl: Ardee is always chipper and kind, offering clemency to a first-time robber because of how desperate his circumstances are even though it goes against protocol.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Her death shakes Shakti and the Astraea Familia to their cores and underscores how truly depraved Evilus is to use a child as a suicide bomber just to kill people like her.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: She dies while trying to comfort a scared child who was forced to fight her, unaware that the child had been strapped with a suicide bomb specifically to kill kind people like Ardee.

    Alfia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alfia_danmemo.png
Voiced by: Shizuka Itō

A former member of the now defunct Hera Familia. She and Zald join Evilus in their wave of terror, starting Orario's darkest days.

  • Almighty Mom: In the timeline where Alfia adopts Bell, her word is absolute in the household. Black is white if she says it is, and any suggestion to the contrary is met with either a Dope Slap or a house-leveling use of magic. Even Zald is cowed by her authority.
  • Angsty Surviving Twin: While she and her twin sister were born with the same incurable illness, only Alfia had the strength and raw talent to become a powerful adventurer. So despite her battle prowess, Alfia feels ashamed of having "stolen" her sister's talent in the womb, especially after she wasn't there to comfort her sister on her deathbed due to being away on an expedition.
  • Anti-Magic: Her second magic, Silentum Eden, generates an armor around herself that nullifies all magical attacks. As a side-effect, her own attack magic is weakened in the process.
  • Barehanded Blade Block: She stops Kaguya's sword with her finger alone and even a surprise attack is only able to leave a small cut on her. Even unarmed, she weathers the attacks of the entire Astraea Familia at once.
  • Call-Forward: Her ultimate magic, Genos Angelus, is heralded by the sound of church bells right before it levels everything in the vicinity. The same bell chimes can be heard when her nephew Bell activates his Argonaut skill.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: She spends most of the story annihilating the opposition with a single use of Satanas Verion even while holding back its power.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She would have easily annihilated the Astraea Familia with her final magic, Junos Angelus, but Hermes and Fynn had foreseen this and gifted Lyra with the Aegis, which Lyra used to copy Alfia's own Silentum Eden to nullify her own spell. Left drained and immobile, Alfia falls prey to the Astraea Familia's counterattack.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Her eyes are almost always closed. By her own admission, it's exhausting for her to even open them. Unlike most examples, it's all but stated that her eyes really are closed and she's perceiving the world around her solely through sound. She finally opens them at the end of her battle with the Astraea Familia.
  • Fallen Hero: As a member of the Hera Familia and the one who slayed the Leviathan, Alfia was one of Orario's greatest heroes, but ended up throwing in her lot with Evilus because of her "disappointment" with the current state of adventurers.
  • Fantastic Nuke: Her third spell, "Genos Angelus" is a super-long chant spell that is so powerful that Gareth fears it would annihilate the Dungeon's entire 18th floor. This spell was also used to kill Leviathan, one of Three Great Monsters.
  • Finger Poke of Doom: She can stop Kaguya's sword with just a single finger and throw her back with it. If she had adopted Bell, she would punish him by flicking him in the forehead hard enough to knock him unconscious. She'd also Dope Slap him every time he called her "auntie", hitting him so hard and fast that the narration calls it faster and harder-hitting than super short chant magic.
  • Foreshadowing: Her greyish-white hair is only shared by a handful of people among the cast, and she mentions having a sister who died during childbirth. It turns, her nephew is none other than Bell.
  • For Want Of A Nail: A short story written by the author details a "What If?" scenario where Alfia adopts and raises her nephew Bell as his stepmother rather than participate in Erebus' plan. While she loves him all the same, she continues to bear lingering regrets and fears over whether or not the hero she and Zald desired would be born without her involvement. As she prepares to leave for Orario again, a young Bell begins to cry and offers to become the great hero she desires for her sake.
  • Handicapped Badass: Her illness greatly reduces the amount of time she can spend on the battlefield, but she's a Level 7 adventurer and an ex-member of the Hera Familia no-less, making her more powerful than virtually every other adventurer alive save for Zald.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Her illness causes her to periodically cough up blood as she nears closer and closer to death. She outright vomits blood while facing the Astraea Familia.
  • In the Hood: Alfia is introduced hiding her face within a green hood.
  • Long-Lost Relative: She is Bell's long-lost aunt, but she refused to see him out of fear that it would dampen her resolve to create a great hero. As a result, Bell never learns about her as she dies by the end of the events of Astraea Record.
  • Ma'am Shock: Alfia claims that her discomfort with being called "ma'am", "mom", or "auntie" is one of the reasons why she participates in Erebus' plan rather than leaving Orario with Zeus to care for her nephew, Bell Cranel. Even in the "What If?" story where she adopts him, she smacks him every time he calls her "auntie".
  • Make Some Noise: Her first magic, "Satanas Verion", is a sonic attack powerful enough to easily defeat all of the Ganesha Familia's strongest members at the same time. Its overwhelming power is only matched by its incredibly short single-word chant, making it nearly impossible to stop.
  • Magic Knight: She can wipe out entire rooms full of adventurers with her short-chant magic, but is equally capable with a weapon.
  • My Beloved Smother: The author has stated that if she decided to live with Bell and lived to the current story, she would be a "final boss" for his many suitresses; implying she would have completely disapproved of the women after his heart and winning her favour would be harder than competing with the other girls. Keep in mind that said suitresses include Freya.
  • Mystical White Hair: She has white hair and is a powerful mage.
  • Nephewism: In a "What If?" short story written by the author, Alfia adopts her nephew Bell instead of joining Erebus' efforts to stoke chaos in hopes of creating a hero.
  • No Body Left Behind: When she dies, she tumbles into a pool of lava created as the 18th floor was leveled, completely incinerating her.
  • One-Woman Army: She decimates entire squads of adventurers sent after her, piling up their corpses on the ground with ease.
  • Passing the Torch: She and Zald's ultimate goal was to pass the torch on from the previous mightiest adventurers to the newest generation by creating a crisis so severe that heroes would have to rise up to stop them.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Zeus used to try to grope her all the time. She'd repel him by either blasting him with magic or tattling to Hera. Zald and Erebus are in disbelief how Zeus survived such a thing.
  • Posthumous Character: She's long dead by the time of the main story and only appears during the Astraea Record anniversary story.
  • Power Copying: She can imitate anyone's fighting style after seeing it once, taking Ais' sword and using it to knock back Gareth and the Astraea Familia before returning it.
  • Power of Love: The author jokingly says that she would have survived to the game's 100th anniversary had she met Bell instead of joining Evilus. But the implication is that her love for her nephew would have given her the willpower to live for at least several more years.
  • Red Baron: Silence.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: She calls the corpses of the people she killed "trash" and makes a point of stepping all over them when Riveria arrives.
  • Superpower Lottery: She possesses a unique Anti-Magic spell as well as extremely strong super short chant magic that works via sound, rendering it invisible, extremely fast, and nearly undodgeable. Even while the former dampens the effects of the latter, her firepower is more than powerful enough to send multiple Level 5s flying. Both of these ridiculously strong abilities can be cast with a single word like Bell's Firebolt. Her third spell borders on Fantastic Nuke, as its super long chant comes with extreme firepower that can slay the Leviathan or obliterate Dungeon's entire 18th floor. As if to add insult to injury, she's also a master of any weapon and can copy anyone's fighting style after seeing it once. It's little wonder that she's referred to as a "personification of skills and a demon of talent".
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The reason she, Zald, and Erebus begin their wave of terror is to cull the weak in hopes that great heroes strong enough to defeat the One-Eyed Black Dragon would rise to oppose the great evil they represent.
  • World's Strongest Woman: As a Level 7 Adventurer and a former member of the Hera Familia, Alfia was likely the strongest woman in Orario at the time of her death.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: She's well aware that she's slowly dying and joins in Erebus' plan to create heroes because she knows that she'll die within the year.
  • You Remind Me of X: In the "What If?" short story, the sight of Bell's white hair is enough to make all of Alfia's accumulated resolve crumble as it reminds him so much of her sister. According to her, almost everything about him, from his personality, his face, and his smile come from his mother. The only that doesn't are his red eyes, which Alfia sometimes wishes she could gouge out because they remind her of Bell's perverted father.

    Zald
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zald_danmemo.png

A former member of the Zeus Familia. He and Alfia join Evilus in their wave of terror, starting Orario's darkest days.

  • Black Knight: He's fully suited up in black armor and initially hides his face in a black helmet on top of being a nigh-unstoppable opponent.
  • BFS: His preferred choice of weapon is a massive greatsword almost as long as he is tall.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Zald places no value in blood ties and compares killing to eating: something that must be done in order to survive. Yet, at the same time, he knows his actions are evil and in fact hopes that heroes will rise up to oppose him and protect Orario.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: His unique skill, Deus Ambrosia, allows him to temporarily increase his stats by eating monsters, people, and beasts. But this also extends to eating anything from dungeon materials to corpses.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Deus Ambrosia allows Zald to eat anything as a Required Secondary Power, including corpses and pieces of the dungeon.
  • Fallen Hero: Once a member of the proud Zeus Familia who once protected Orario, its fall led him to look for another battlefield, taking out his need for battle on the city he once defended.
  • Honorary Uncle: In a "What If" short story written by the author, he becomes one of these to Alfia's nephew Bell.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's faster than a Juggernaut that spawned on the 70th floor and powerful enough to easily defeat a Level 6 Ottar.
  • One-Man Army: He effortlessly plows through entire squads of adventurers sent to stop them, calling them weak and tender.
  • Passing the Torch: He and Alfia's ultimate goal was to pass the torch on from the previous mightiest adventurers to the newest generation by creating a crisis so severe that heroes would have to rise up to stop them. Zald found his successor in Ottar, who leveled up to Level 7 by defeating him.
  • Playing with Fire: His magic, Rea Ambrosia, wreathes his word in flames that then sweep across an entire battlefield.
  • Red Baron: Predator.
  • Secretly Dying: He's slowly dying from the backlash of eating the poisonous flesh of the Behemoth.
  • Supreme Chef: He's so picky about his food that anything he cooks will be exquisite. The problem is, the oppressive air he and Alfia exude makes it impossible to enjoy it.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The reason he, Erebus, and Alfia begin their wave of terror is to cull the weak in hopes that great heroes strong enough to defeat the One-Eyed Black Dragon would rise to oppose the great evil they represent.
  • World's Strongest Man: He's considered the mightiest adventurer alive at the time of his death as one of the only two known Level 7s at the time, with Alfia as his only peer.
