    Zeus

Zeus

Voiced by: Atsushi Ono (JP), Chris Gibson (EN) Foreign VAs

The former god of the now-defunct Zeus familia. After being forced out of Orario, he raised Bell as his grandson.

  • Dirty Old Man: All of Bell's perverted tendencies, and even the reason he initially wanted a harem, is because of Zeus teaching him those things.
  • The Faceless: His face is obscured in Bell's flashbacks.
  • Faking the Dead: Bell thinks he's dead, but Hermes reveals he faked his death for a currently unknown reason.
  • God Was My Co-Pilot: Unbeknownst to most of Orario, the one who filled Bell's head with stories and shaped his personality is none other then the great god Zeus who disappeared after the destruction of his familia.
  • Good Parents: Even months after Zeus' "death", Bell still looks back fondly on their years together and thinks of his words for advice in his toughest moments.
  • Iron Butt-Monkey: He's unusually tough for a god, and Erebus is baffled at how Zeus wasn't sent back to heaven after incurring the wrath of both Hera and Alfia for groping them. In the What If? story where Alfia adopts Bell, Zeus is sent through walls, hit with magic that demolishes an entire house, and sent flying over the mountain tops by Alfia, yet somehow manages to not die. All of this is Played for Laughs.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: He's very interested in the opposite sex, to the point of teaching Bell that all men should peek at women bathing in a hilariously over-the-top manner.
Zeus: Bell, peeking is part of a man's romance.
    Bell: Grandpa?
    Zeus: RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROMANCE!
  • Parental Substitute: He acted as a father figure to Bell, raising him from childhood and inspiring him to become an adventurer.
  • Spit Take: It happened off-screen, but Zeus spat out his tea upon learning Bell levelled up so quickly.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Subverted. Bell believes his grandfather was murdered by wild goblins, which spurs him to leave home and head for Orario. However, it's later revealed that Zeus faked his death for reasons unknown.
  • Walking Spoiler: The mere fact that Bell's grandfather is Zeus was a huge Wham Line when it was revealed.

Rakia Kingdom

    Ares
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ares_danmachi.png
Voiced by: Chikahiro Kobayashi (JP), Scott Gibbs (EN) Foreign VAs

The god of war and patron god of the Rakia Kingdom.

  • Adaptational Dumbass: In the original mythology as the God of War, Ares is a brilliant strategist and tactician. In this story, he's a total moron who thinks warfare is just throwing a bunch of troops at his problems until they go away, and can't comprehend why this doesn't work on Orario, where each adventurer is a One-Man Army by necessity, having to deal with the Dungeon. Possible justification for this. Ares' Illiadic presentation was well-known to have these particular qualities, with the strategic/tactical brilliance all going to Athena's instead.
  • Adaptational Wimp: In his original mythology, he's one of the top gods in terms of power and martial skill. Here, he's a joke who gets his sword broken the first time he draws it, and were it not for a convenient landslide, would likely have been "sent to heaven" by Ais's blade.
  • Bullying a Dragon: He keeps launching attacks on Orario, which has adventurers so powerful that, if any one of them knew where his base camp is, could simply waltz right in and completely annihilate his entire army with minimal effort. He can't comprehend that this is the reason his armies get constantly routed and sent home badly battered, if they even make it back at all.
  • Did Not Think This Through: His "brilliant" plan to take one of the gods of Orario hostage to force a surrender has many flaws, not the least of which is that this will provoke the familia of said god to retaliate with lethal force if said god is harmed in any way, presuming he even gets lucky and gets past said familia to grab the god in the first place. It's only sheer luck that he managed to grab Hestia when she was asked to grab some potatoes in the fields just outside Orario's gates.
  • Dumb Muscle: Does this ever apply. He's an absolute moron who can't understand why sending waves upon waves of poorly-trained knights and cavalry against Orario isn't getting him anywhere. Even among the gods he's known to have "100% muscles between his ears."
  • Fiery Redhead: He has orange hair and besides being stupid, passionate and impulsive are his other defining character traits.
  • I Reject Your Reality: He is so convinced that he's a brilliant military strategist and profound martial talent that he ignores all evidence to the contrary. In fact, the same village that nurses Hestia back to health easily intercepts and subdues him when comes to chase her down, despite being populated entirely by farmers and peasants who have no martial talent or training whatsoever, and he still flails around boasting of how great a warrior he is. The crown prince of Rakia can only sigh in resignation.
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: His attempts at going into war with Orario and kidnapping Hestia are so pathetic that he comes off as a pitiful idiot instead of a threat.
  • Miles Gloriosus: Believes he's a brilliant military talent, and would be invincible on the battlefield, and loves to brag about it. In reality, he's an incompetent moron who can barely comprehend which is the business end of a sword.
  • No, You: Every time his retainers, including the crown prince of Rakia, calls his actions foolish, and him a total musclehead, he turns around and retorts "the man who calls others a musclehead is the actual musclehead".
  • Pointy-Haired Boss: He is so stupid, the king of Rakia obeying his orders causes said king to be known as "The Moron King".
  • Too Dumb to Live: He continuously launches attacks on Orario, where a single adventurer can, and does, routinely rout his entire army, can't comprehend why his troops come back battered and bloody, assuming they come back at all, and then goes on to really provoke Orario as a whole, by kidnapping one of the local gods to hold as a "godstage" to try and force a surrender, instead angering all the local gods, most of whom are way, way stronger and nastier than he is when provoked.
  • War God: Like the mythological Ares, he's a war god, but a really lame one at that.

    Marius Victrix Rakia

Marius Victrix Rakia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prince_rakia.jpg
Voiced by: Takuma Terashima (JP), Cameron Bautsch (EN) Foreign VAs

The crown prince of Rakia and the vice-captain of the Ares Familia.

  • Beleaguered Assistant: Having to put up with the stupid military tactics of "The Moron King" is a major source of headaches for the poor prince.
  • Lord Country: He's the prince of the Rakia royal family that rules over the kingdom of Rakia.

Xenos

    In General
  • Benevolent Monsters: The Xenos are intelligent and generally nice monsters who only attack in self-defense, though some of them can go berserk/feral.
  • Fantastic Racism: Humans fear and hate them for being monsters, while non-sentient monsters attack them just like they attack humans. Not having a real place to belong, they're forced to stay hidden in the Dungeon.
  • Meaningful Name: "Xenos" (ξένος) is Greek for "foreign(er)" or "strange(r)".
  • Reincarnation: There's the theory that the Xenos monsters gained intelligence through the cycle of death and rebirth in the Dungeon. That some Xenos can remember things they never experienced in their current lives supports this.
  • Sexy Dimorphism: While there are a few like Arles that break this trope, the anime shows many of the male monsters being typical monster looks while the female monsters usually end up being a Cute Monster Girl and having humonoid appearances compared to their male counterparts.

    Asterius

Asterius

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/asterius_character_art.png
Voiced by: Ryo Sugisaki (JP), Ricardo Contreras (EN)

A powerful sentient monster who shares a history with Bell.
  • Blood Knight: Asterius craves battle especially against strong opponents.
  • It's Personal: He has a personal interest in Bell and considers him to be his rival because in his past life he was the Minotaur Bell defeated on the 9th floor.
  • The Juggernaut: He easily bowls over anyone who stands in his way. Even as a group, the Loki Familia has considerable trouble trying to stop him.
  • Our Minotaurs Are Different: He's a very powerful Minotaur with red horns.
  • The Rival: The closest Bell has to one, being the one person the Minotaur feels will satisfy him in combat.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Finn notes that Asterius relies more on his natural abilities than on technique. He suspects that if Asterius trained more, he'd be on par with Ottar, who is the strongest Adventurer.
  • World's Strongest Man: He is considered the strongest Xenos seen so far. His strength is estimated to be around that of a Level 7 Adventurer.

    Wiene

Wiene

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wiene_tachi.png
Voiced by: Rina Hidaka (JP), Cat Thomas (EN) Foreign VAs

A sentient monster that Bell finds wounded on the 19th floor of the dungeon.

  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: After she accidentally scratches Bell with her claws she cries and tries to back away from him. Bell reassures her that he's okay and Welf helps her with this by trimming her claws down.
  • And I Must Scream: In the anime, she speaks of her past before becoming self-aware. She mentions her life being one giant waking nightmare where her body indiscriminately attacked everyone she came across but wouldn't listen to her will, until she found herself in Bell's custody, and he tended to her wounds.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Imprints on Bell because he treats her kindly and always looks after her.
  • Casting Gag:
  • Children Are Innocent: She looks and acts like a young naive child in the body of a dragon-girl.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She did not like it when other Xenos were getting close to Bell and when Arles tried to interact with him she immediately told her that Bell was hers.
  • Cute Little Fangs: She has long fangs due to being a dragon girl, but they only look cute in her.
  • Cute Monster Girl: She's a dragon, but looks like a cute girl with blue hair, blue skin, long fangs, claws, and scales on her body.
  • Fantastic Racism: On the receiving end of this, as she's a monster from the dungeon, but Bell sees her as a scared little girl. Even the Hestia Familia wanted to kill her on the spot and only reluctantly takes her in when Bell insists on protecting her.
  • Going Commando: While the Hestia Familia get her to at least wear a robe, she doesn't have any underwear on.
  • Heroic Resolve: After Ais' speech about how her monster features will scare people thus justifying her views on killing monsters regardless of their ability to talk and feel, Wiene immediately breaks off her claws and yanks off her wing even with the amount of pain doing so puts her through. This shatters Ais' resolve to kill Wiene and she leaves after giving Bell an elixer to heal her self-inflicted wounds.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She tries to get rid of the cape covering her body whenever possible. She immediately took off the clothes that Haruhime gave her when they first wash her. It took considerable convincing to have her wear a cape and keep it on. She also fails to understand why the women in the Hestia Familia don't want to take a bath with Bell and goes to see him after the bath without putting her cape on.
  • Naked First Impression: Bell first finds her naked in the forest. He lends her his cape to cover herself.
  • Naked on Arrival: She's introduced completely naked as she's running from some pursuers.
  • Never Given a Name: When the Hestia Familia asks for her name, she doesn't have one. They tell Bell to name her and they quickly decide on Wiene.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: She rescues a little girl from falling crates. The scared child runs off, and the nearby crowd begins pelting her with stones, thinking she attacked the little girl instead.
  • Organic Bra: Before being given clothes, a few scales and Godiva Hair provide some cover for her breasts. Nothing covers her crotch though but otherwise she has no obvious features there.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: She is a Vouivre, a kind of dragon. Although, there's very little dragon-like about her appearance as she's one of the most humanoid monsters seen in the Dungeon.
  • Pointy Ears: She has long, pointy ears.
  • Super-Hearing: As a dragon type monster, Wiene has a sharp sense of hearing.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: In terms of raw powers, she is among the strongest of the Xenos due to being a dragon. But she has the mind and personality of a young child, so is lacking in combat experience. In Memoria Freese, one story has Lili being her battle commander and instructing her on how to use her strength, with the two proving to be a very formidable team.
  • When She Smiles: Her smile is adorable on both sides of the fourth wall.
  • Winged Humanoid: When Wiene saves a child, her body grows a dragon wing from her back.
  • Wolverine Claws: She has very long and sharp claws, causing her to hurt Bell when she's clinging to his arm. She lets Welf cut her claws to prevent this from happening again.

    Lido
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lido_character_art.png
Voiced by: Masaaki Mizunaka (JP), Joe Daniels (EN) Foreign VAs

A Lizardman who leads the rest of the Xenos in testing the Hestia Familia's intentions toward Wiene.

  • Boisterous Bruiser: Very enthusiastic and jolly when he converses with others, and is one of the strongest Xenos.
  • Blood Knight: He loves to fight.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: When Bell sends him flying with an Argonaut enhanced punch, he laughs, calls off the attack and asks to shake hands with Bell.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Officially spelled and pronounced as Lido, but has sometimes been spelled as "Lyd".
  • Lizard Folk: He's a Lizardman, a species of humanoid lizards.
  • Nice Guy: He's a honest and friendly Lizardman.
  • The Nicknamer: Dubs Bell as "Bellgy".
  • Scary Teeth: His teeth are all sharp and pointy.
  • Secret Test of Character: He puts Bell's party through one by having monsters target Wiene, just to see how they'd act. Because they were willing to put themselves in harm's way to protect the dragon girl, he extends the hand of friendship.

    Rei
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rei_character_art.png
Voiced by: Yūki Takada (JP), Mai Le (EN) Foreign VAs

A Siren.

  • Cute Monster Girl: She looks like a beautiful woman with bird body parts.
  • Hair Substitute Feature: She has feathers in place of hair on top of her head.
  • Harping on About Harpies: She's a Siren, a monster similar to a Harpy. She's a woman from the waist up and the bottom half resembles an eagle or vulture with claws. She also has large wings in place of arms.
  • Unusual Ears: Her ears look like small wings.

    Glos
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/glos_character_art.png
Voiced by: Tetsu Inada (JP), Michael Wronski (EN) Foreign VAs

A Gargoyle.

  • Draconic Humanoid: He looks like a humanoid dragon.
  • Fantastic Racism: He hates humans and firmly believes they must wage war with them if they have any hope of surviving.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He is one of the good guys, but he is very cold, pessimistic and rude to his human allies.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He tries to pull one, attacking Bell as part of Engineered Heroics and tries to get Bell to kill him in self-defense. Bell doesn't fall for it.
  • Rock Monster: He is a gargoryle, meaning he is a dragon-like monster made of stone.

    Lanier

Voiced by: Naoko Komatsu (JP), Olivia Swasey (EN) Foreign VAs

An Arachne.

  • Acid Attack: She's able to spit a highly corrosive acid to attack her enemies.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: When her group of Xenos is caught in the Ikelos Familia's trap, Lanier destroys her own gem to kill herself before the humans can make her body a plaything and then kill her.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: She impulsively charges in to rescue a siren, causing her group of Xenos to fall into a trap of the Ikelos Familia and getting them all captured or killed.
  • Projectile Webbing: She can ensnare enemies in spider webbing.
  • Spider People: She has the upper body is that of a human woman and the lower body of a giant spider.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She dies in the same episode she's introduced.

    Rhett

Voiced by: Kaito Takeda (JP), James Belcher (EN) Foreign VAs

A Goblin.

  • Aerith and Bob: Compared to many of the other Xenos, his name is relatively normal.
  • Our Goblins Are Different: Goblins are green and small humanoid monsters that are considered to be the weakest monster in the dungeon.
  • Pointy Ears: He has very long, pointed ears.

    Alulu

A Lamia.

  • Cute Monster Girl: In spite of the snake lower body, scales, and claws, Laura is an attractive Lamia.
  • Pointy Ears: Like several humanoid monsters, she has long and pointed ears.
  • Snake People: She has the upper body of a human woman and the lower body of a snake.
  • Wolverine Claws: She has long and sharp claws.

    Marie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marie_tachi.png
Voiced by: Saya Fukuzumi (JP), Teresa Zimmerman (EN) Foreign VAs

A mermaid Xenos who befriends Bell.

  • Adaptational Curves: She appears to possess larger breasts in the anime than she had in the light novel.
  • The Cutie: She has a cheerful, kind-hearted, childlike demeanor similar to Wiene.
  • Godiva Hair: At first, her hair is the only thing covering her breasts.
  • Heal It with Blood: Marie's mermaid blood has healing properties and is capable of reattaching severed limbs.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Much like Wiene, she is Naked on Arrival and has no understanding about human modesty. When she sees Bell being uncomfortable over her exposed breasts, she dons a Seashell Bra, not out of any understanding of embarrassment but merely to imitate human clothing.
  • Mind-Control Music: As a mermaid, Marie is able to charm adventurers by singing.
  • Naked on Arrival: She does not have anything but Godiva Hair covering her bust when Bell first meets her, and unlike Wiene she does not have any Monster Modesty scales.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: Thanks to being a Xenos, she's the cute kind of mermaid that looks and acts like a normal girl, but with a fish tail for legs.
  • Pointy Ears: Her ears are long and pointy, similar to an elf.
  • Seashell Bra: She places a pair of seashells over her bust when Bell sees that she was not wearing anything.
  • Signature Headgear: She's a mermaid wearing a seashell as a hair decoration.

Other Dungeon Entities

    Moss Huge
An Enhanced Species monster that proves to be far more cunning and dangerous than the average monster.
  • Arc Villain: Is the main threat for the first half of Season 4.
  • Batman Gambit: Repeatedly pulls these on adventurers, predicting their moves and manipulating their actions.
  • The Chessmaster: For an ambiguously sapient monster who is unable to talk, it is able to play many adventurers like puppets, luring and tricking them with traps.
  • Combat Pragmatist: It will use anything in its surroundings to gain an edge in battle, from decoys, to other monsters, hiding in the water or shadows, and even stealing dead adventurer's armor.
  • It Can Think: While lacking the ability to talk, it is easily one of the most intelligent monsters to date, able to outsmart adventurers and lure them into carefully planned traps.
  • Healing Factor: For any damage it does take, the Moss Huge is also able to regenerate parts it has lost.
  • Kill It with Fire: Its one weakness is Bell's Firebolt magic. After learning that the adventurers possessed fire based attacks, the Moss Huge steals heat-resistant Undine cloth from dead adventurers to wrap itself in, granting it a degree of protection from further fire damage.
  • Muck Monster: Its body is composed entirely of moss without any bones or hard parts. Doesn't stop it from being a devastating force of nature though.
  • Plant Person: As a monster composed of vegetation, it possesses plant based powers such as shooting out deadly seeds and summoning vines from the walls.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: It possesses glowing red eyes, only adding to its menacing effect.
  • Warm-Up Boss: As troublesome as the Moss Huge was, it was merely an appetizer of what was to come in the form of the Juggernaut.
  • Worthy Opponent: It comes to recognize Bell as a genuine threat to it, so seeks to take the precaution of eliminating Bell by sending him to a lower floor first.

    The Juggernaut
A Monster that emerges whenever substantial damage is done to any Floor of the Dungeon with the intended goal of killing any Adventurers that are on the damaged Floor.
  • Angry Guard Dog: In terms of biology, the Juggernaut acts similar to that of a "Killer T Cell" in a body: an Immunity Cell that removes and destroys any cells that are infected by foreign bacteria or viruses until such a point where the infected cells are all gone and the damage that was done to the body heals and recovers. Similar to its' role of wiping out any Monsters or Adventurers that are still on a damaged Floor.
  • Anti-Magic: The Juggernauts' scales are naturally resistant to any Magical attacks done to it, often deploying hexagonal shields around itself when Spells are fired at it. Meaning that the only way to defeat the Juggernaut is to use physical attacks.
  • Attack Reflector: The anti-magic scales mentioned above don't simply cancel out magic thrown its way, but reflects them back at the caster at full force, to devastating — and usually lethal — effect.
  • Awakening the Sleeping Giant: Normally, the Juggernaut isn't called in to action unless there's heavy damage done to any Floor of the Dungeon; and only then its' in cases where the damage to a Floor was the direct result of Adventurers.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Unlike other Monsters that are found or spawned in the Dungeon, The Juggernaut doesn't possess a Magic Stone; making it difficult to actually try fighting against.
  • Hero Killer: The one that appeared on the 30th floor 5 years before the present story wiped out almost the entire Astraea familia, with the sole survivor of its rampage being Ryuu.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Is largely seen as this, with the only way of actually "defeating" the Juggernaut is to escape the damaged floors and wait for the damage done to the Dungeon to repair itself.
  • Immune to Mind Control: Due to the fact that The Juggernaut lacks a Magic Stone, Evilus' Monster-taming equipment doesn't work on it, as Jura Hammer found out the hard way.
  • The Juggernaut: Well... yeah, it's in the name. Not only are they hellishly strong, fast, and durable, they're utterly relentless. Both times we see one appear, they rip through entire groups of adventurers like they're made of paper.
  • Lightning Bruiser: They're way faster than anything their size reasonably should be. The one that annihilates the Astraea familia slaughters three of them before anyone can even react, and the one that Bell encounters is so fast that it looks like it's Flash Stepping around him.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: The Juggernauts' intended role within the Dungeon is to serve as a countermeasure against Adventurers that heavily damages any of the Floors within the Dungeon; and only after the threat has been dealt with and the damage to the floor is naturally repaired will the Juggernaut finally disappear.
  • Wolverine Claws: It's main form of attack. It's claws are so sharp that they shred through adventurers like a hot knife through butter.
  • Undead Abomination: Played with. Given all Dungeon monsters spawned from the walls, it's not an actual undead creature. But its gigantic skeletal appearance really gives off the impression of being one.
