"Want me to go get you a yakisoba pan!?
I'll be back in two minutes!"
A timid boy who has been constantly picked on and bossed around ever since elementary school. Things don't get any better for him once he enters high school, where a dangerous delinquent wastes no time in making him her personal errand boy, marking the beginning of yet another miserable chapter of his life.
Or at least, that's what he thinks...
First Appearance: Chapter 1

  • Animal Lover: He's incredibly fond of animals and passionate about taking care of them.
  • Animal Motifs: Rabbits. He takes care of them as part of his school club activities, his Idiot Hair resembles bunny ears, and Kanade quickly takes a liking to a sad-looking plush rabbit because it reminds her of him.
  • Apologises a Lot: He constantly feels the need to apologise for inconveniencing people, speaking out of line, and causing misunderstandings among other things, whether he could reasonably be considered at fault or not.
  • Berserk Button: For as quiet and non-confrontational as he tends to be, he can't stand it when people badmouth Kanade and will make it clear he's having none of it whenever they do.
  • Bully Magnet: He was a favourite target of bullies all throughout elementary and middle school, and carries the emotional scars from it to this day. He's managed to escape this status by the start of the series though, as most would-be bullies are too afraid of Kanade to try antagonizing her "lackey", limiting the ones picking on him to the very dedicated (i.e. Aika) and the very stupid (i.e. Matsuri).
  • Butt-Monkey: Whether he's misinterpreting Kanade's advances as something much worse, getting beaten up by Matsuri, or pranked by Aika, it's safe to say things don't often go Fuyuhiko's way.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Many of the habits he picked up from years as an errand boy translate to him being a doting boyfriend to Kanade once they start dating.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: All the bullying he's been through has left him with a lot of baggage. He bases his self-worth entirely on how useful he is to other people, assumes anyone talking to him wants to humiliate or exploit him, and once got freaked out because he looked in the mirror and couldn't see a single bruise on his face.
  • Covert Pervert: Being at Kanade's mercy often causes him to be overcome with "wicked thoughts", which he tries his best to shoo away.
  • Distressed Dude: A common side-effect of being a Non-Action Guy who involves himself with delinquents.
  • Dragged into Drag: Aika forces him into a maid outfit while preparing for the school cultural festival, much to his embarrassment.
  • Extreme Doormat: To the point that he'll start to panic if no one has forced any errands on him in the last few weeks.
  • Friendless Background: Prior to entering high school, the closest things to "friends" he had were the kids who would force him to run errands for them and Aika, none of whom he looks back on fondly.
  • Generation Xerox: While we never see or learn much about his father, the little information we do get implies he's about as shy and soft-spoken as his son. We also learn that he did something bold and impressive which led to him and Fuyuhiko's mother dating, much like how Fuyuhiko would declare he was going to marry Kanade to her mother's face a few days later.
  • Guilt Complex: Whenever anything goes wrong in his relationship with Kanade, you can expect him to place the blame squarely on his own shoulders no matter what it was, and question whether he should even be with her if he's just going to keep hurting her.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: As a result of his low self-esteem, Fuyuhiko is constantly putting himself down, doesn't think he deserves nice things, and whenever something goes wrong he'll usually blame himself for it.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His right eye is covered up by his hair, highlighting his gloomy personality.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Kanade's own issues may be a big part of why Fuyuhiko remains oblivious to her true feelings, but it also has a lot to do with him not seeing himself as someone worthy of other people's love. This goes double in the case of Kanade, as he believes she should have a boyfriend who's cool, strong, and absolutely nothing like him. It's telling that his first reaction upon realising he was in love with her was to immediately try and distance himself from her, worrying that his feelings would upset her.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Kanade first learned of his kind nature after he took in and cared for an abandoned kitten he found.
  • Last-Name Basis: He refers to everyone besides his family this way out of politeness, notably being the only one in Kanade's friend group to call Matsuri and Yutaka by their last names.
  • Loser Protagonist: He's weak, easily scared, has trouble standing up for himself, has very few friends and gets pretty much no respect from his classmates.
  • Love Epiphany: After being invited out on a date by Kanade and spending the day enjoying himself alongside her, Matsuri, and Yutaka, he's finally able to make sense of his conflicted emotions and realise that beyond his fear of her, he truly does love Kanade.
Fuyuhiko: Ahh... Now I get it. I'm glad when I'm useful to her, I have fun when I'm with her, I feel sad when we part ways, and happy when I think that I'll see her tomorrow. So this... is love?
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The "feminine boy" of the pair. Fuyuhiko is shy, quiet, and has a soft spot for cute animals.
  • Morality Pet: He's one towards Kanade. Whenever we see her interact with other people she's usually rude, dismissive and irritable, whereas she always treats him with love and affection.
  • Nervous Wreck: Being a Bully Magnet for so much of his life has taken its toll on him, making him panicky and easily intimidated.
  • Non-Action Guy: Especially compared to the delinquent girls. He's so hopeless at defending himself he's apparently been beaten up by grade schoolers before.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: Wears a pink hoodie beneath his jacket.
  • Shrinking Violet: He's shy and has trouble standing up for himself, which makes it easy for other people to push him around and walk all over him.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: He only has eyes for Kanade. Aika expresses surprise that he can spend so much time around Yutaka without so much as ogling her.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Since his previous interactions with other people have been almost universally negative, it takes him a while to get why being with Kanade makes him feel warm inside and causes his heart to race.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Worrying that he's too weak to deserve someone like Kanade, he reaches out to Yutaka and asks her to help him toughen up. Yutaka tells him he's already growing stronger, remarking that he'd never have made a request like that back when they first met, and that even if he'll never be on Kanade's level he's still becoming a more positive, confident person, and should take pride in that.

     Kanade Toramaru

Kanade Toramaru (寅丸 奏)

"Be mine."
A delinquent whose fighting skills are second to none. After finding out the boy she'd been admiring from a distance is attending the same high school as her, she wastes no time in asking him out, and is pleasantly surprised when he says yes, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter of her life.
Or at least, that's what she thinks...
First Appearance: Chapter 1

  • 10-Minute Retirement: After Tzuka kidnaps Fuyuhiko to get at her, she chooses to abdicate her position as Banchou, both to make sure nothing like that would ever happen again, and because she was developing a complex over how people were afraid of her. It doesn't last long, as trying to act like a good student only frustrates her, and when her friends band together to make it clear they'll stay by her side no matter what, she quickly goes back to her old self.
  • Animal Eyes: She has vertical slits for pupils like a cat.
  • Animals Hate Her:
    • In chapter 3 she decides to assist Fuyuhiko with his Animal Care Club duties, but admits she probably won't be much help since every animal she's run into has been terrified of her, even the Angry Guard Dogs. Despite this, Fuyuhiko is able to show her how to handle a rabbit without scaring it.
    • Chapter 42 is the first time in the series we see Kanade get injured. The reason? She tried to rescue a cat that got stuck up a tree, and it attacked her.
    • She's so used to animals being afraid of her that when a cat snuggles up in her lap in chapter 73 she's left in shock, wondering what happened to its self-preservation instincts.
  • Animal Motifs: Tigers. If the pattern on the back of her jacket didn't clue you in, then the "Tora" note  in her name might do.
  • Bully Hunter: When they were younger she'd often have to protect Tasuku from bullies, and ever since then she's developed a habit of stepping in to defend people she sees getting picked on.
  • Childish Older Sibling: Despite being the older of the Toramaru siblings, she has to rely on her younger brother to cook, clean, and take care of the house while she indulges in her singleminded crush on Fuyuhiko.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Anything that draws Fuyuhiko's attention away from her will provoke her ire, whether it be an animal he's taking care of, a teacher asking for his help, or especially Aika and her bullying.
  • Comically Invincible Hero: As a notorious delinquent, it's no surprise she gets in a lot of fights. We rarely ever see her fight though, only Smash Cuts to her standing by the unconscious bodies of anyone who dared challenge her without a single scratch on her.
  • Cool Big Sis: Miyuki sees her as one, showing her nothing but admiration and wanting to be just like her.
  • Cute Bruiser: She's small, has a cute face, and can beat the tar out of anyone she meets in seconds.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: According to Yutaka, she used to act a lot colder before she got together with Fuyuhiko. This can also be seen in the way she treats Matsuri and Yutaka. Initially she just sees them as a pair of nuisances that won't stop following her, but gradually grows to consider them friends.
  • The Dreaded: All it takes is her walking into a room to reduce everyone else to terrified whispers.
  • Friendless Background: Her fearsome reputation and antisocial nature have been more than enough to scare off any potential friends she could have made before she set her sights on Fuyuhiko.
  • Height Angst: She's 4'10" and very self-conscious about it, wearing geta to make herself look taller and getting violent whenever the subject of her height is brought up.
  • Last-Name Basis: With Fuyuhiko. After getting jealous that Aika can casually call him by his first name, she tries it herself, only to get tongue-tied and go right back to using his last name.
  • Leg Focus: Along with Aika, certain angles in the manga clearly like to focus on her butt and shapely legs.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The "masculine girl" of the pair. Kanade is crude, brash, and constantly getting into fights.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: If Kanade were able to express her feelings clearly, it would save everyone a lot of grief. Unfortunately, she happens to be the kind of girl who shows her love by calling someone her property and asking "romantic" questions like "What kind of grave would you like?" Poor Fuyuhiko spends the first several months of their relationship unsure if she wants to kill him, use him as a slave, or if she genuinely loves him.
  • The Napoleon: Short in stature and just as short in temper. At least, when Fuyuhiko isn't involved.
  • No Badass to Her Valet: While she may be the most feared delinquent in her city, her family aren't intimidated by her in the slightest. Her younger brother regularly teases her, points out her flaws, and sends her out on errands while not even being fazed by her attempts to threaten him, and her mother has no problem calling her a shame to the family straight to her face.
  • No Social Skills: Most people are too scared to approach her and she doesn't make much of an effort to close the gap herself, which means whenever she does try to interact with someone, she's completely out of her element and usually just ends up scaring them off.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: While she still wears the basic Sailor Fuku, she's ditched the ribbon tie and added a pair of Modesty Shorts and a jacket with a tiger pattern on the back. She also wears geta, which are probably against regulation; not that anyone's brave enough to tell her that...
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After so many chapters of her being a strong, fearless delinquent, it comes as a shock to see her meekly sit in silence as her mother reprimands her for her behaviour, not even trying to get a word in edgeways and only speaking up to apologize after she's finished being scolded. However, the most uncharacteristic moment comes at the end of the chapter, when she tries to break up with Fuyuhiko.
  • Outdoorsy Gal: She and her brother grew up on an isolated mountain, and learned how to fish and hunt for their own food. It's likely this is part of the reason she grew up to be so strong, especially after seeing her catch a fish by hitting it with a perfectly thrown rock.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Became the fearsome Banchou of her school despite being a miniscule 4'10".
  • Real Men Eat Meat: Well, not so much "men" as "very tomboyish girls", but the first time she tried cooking for Fuyuhiko she prepared nothing but meat; likely a reflection of her own tastes.
  • Secretly Wealthy: She's actually the daughter to a rich, prestigious family; something that isn't immediately obvious given her rough-and-tumble, tomboyish nature and her and Tasuku's disinterest in flaunting their wealth.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Attempted when Tasuku picks out a cute new outfit for her in the hopes of impressing Fuyuhiko. While Matsuri loves it, it doesn't get much of a reaction out of Fuyuhiko, who thinks her usual clothes suit her better.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Fuyuhiko's kindness had her falling head over heels for him before the two of them had even spoken face-to-face.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: Especially early on in the series, before her relationship with Fuyuhiko had had much of a chance to develop.
  • Suicide as Comedy: While she never goes through with it, it becomes a Running Gag for Kanade to ask for a knife to slit her stomach with whenever she realises she's said or done something embarrassing.
  • The Unfavorite: Her mother sees her as a disappointment to the family for her delinquency, especially when compared to Tasuku. However, in the end this is subverted. Tasuku explains that Kanade is her mother's pride and joy who she heaps attention on, but due to her strictness most of that attention manifests as her trying to fix her percieved flaws.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Hurting Fuyuhiko is the quickest way to earn a beating from her, as Matsuri and Aika can attest to.
  • Weakness Turns Her On: Subverted. While Kanade does love Fuyuhiko for many things he personally sees as signs of his own weakness, it's not his weakness or submissiveness itself she's attracted to. In fact, she often tells him he needs to stand up for himself more, and she seems to be at her happiest on the rare occasions where he's being the assertive one.
  • When She Smiles: Seeing her give a genuine smile while he's teaching her how to handle a rabbit is Fuyuhiko's first sign that maybe Kanade isn't the dangerous bully he thought she was.

Other Students

     Matsuri Tatsumi

"What are you doing to Banchou, you loser!?"
A third year delinquent and Kanade's (self-proclaimed) right-hand woman. She's convinced Fuyuhiko is trying to steal her position, and loathes him for it.
First Appearance: Chapter 3

  • Abhorrent Admirer: While she's certainly not unattractive, she's extremely pushy and has no sense of boundaries, and as a result her advances just make Kanade angry and uncomfortable.
  • Amusing Injuries: A frequent victim of these, usually courtesy of Kanade and Yutaka.
  • Assurance Backfire: After he convinces Kanade she doesn't have to give up being a delinquent for his sake, Matsuri starts to warm up to Fuyuhiko and begins treating him as a friend. When Yutaka questions her about this, she assumes it's because she's in love with Fuyuhiko and reassures her that there's nothing romantic between them, and that her relationship with him is no different than the friendship between the two of them. Yutaka finds this less than reassuring, considering Matsuri is the one she's in love with.
  • Bully Hunter: When they were in middle school, she would beat up any boy who picked on Yutaka. Even in the present, when Yutaka is more than capable of fending for herself, she'll pick a fight with anyone she catches badmouthing her behind her back.
  • The Chew Toy: All of her attempts to get closer to Kanade are doomed to painful, humiliating failure.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Being in Kanade's presence is all it takes to reduce her to squeeing over how cute she is. While she's still prone to fawning over her when they're apart, she's much better at composing herself.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: She's the former Banchou of her school, having lost the title to Kanade in a fight. Rather than holding a grudge though, she happily became her subordinate and admirer.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: When she first meets Fuyuhiko she's openly hostile towards him, insulting and threatening him for daring to get close to her Banchou. However, as it becomes clear that Kanade really cares about him and she convinces herself that Yutaka has a crush on him too, she starts to reluctantly accept his presence for her friends' sake, even stepping up to defend him on occasion. By chapter 64 she's gained a newfound respect for him when he makes it clear that he doesn't want Kanade to give up on being a delinquent to protect him, and while the chapter does end with her trying to beat him up again, in subsequent chapters she starts calling him by name, no longer has any issues with him and Kanade getting together, and even calls him a friend in a private conversation with Yutaka.
  • The Ditz: Rarely thinks before she acts or opens her mouth, and whenever she makes a false assumption, she'll continue to believe it no matter how many people tell her she's wrong.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Seeing her beloved Banchou giving Fuyuhiko more attention than her leaves her seething with jealousy.
  • Gyaru Girl: Her design takes clear inspiration from the Kogal subculture, with her blonde hair and loose socks both being clear ties to the image, and she tends to act a lot girlier than Yutaka and Kanade.
  • Hey, You!: Exclusively refers to Fuyuhiko with insults, with "bean sprout" as her go-to.
  • Idiots Cannot Catch Colds: In chapter 10, in response to Kanade claiming she rarely gets sick, Matsuri brags about how she's never once caught a cold in her life. Toramau and Yutaka immediately suggest it's because she's so stupid.
  • Irony: Despite being the most fashion-conscious one in Kanade's group, she's the only one of them who hasn't customized her school uniform in some way.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: A platonic example, but when she assumes Yutaka has a crush on Fuyuhiko, she's willing to put aside her resentment of him for the sake of her best friend's happiness.
  • Late to the Realization: Since Matsuri is prone to getting the wrong idea about everything, late into the series we see her making some earth-shattering revelations about things everyone else was already well aware of. For example, it takes a good 60 chapters before she figures out Fuyuhiko was never interested in becoming Kanade's right-hand man, and when she tells them both about Yutaka's Love Confession, she gets annoyed when they're more surprised to hear she confessed than they were by the fact she's in love with her.
  • Mythical Motifs: Dragons. Ironically, despite having major ties to a tiger-themed character, she's her loyal subordinate rather than her rival.
  • Psycho Lesbian: Subverted. The way she acts around Kanade certainly makes her come off as one, but she has exclusively dated boys in the past and claimed her feelings for Kanade weren't romantic when asked directly about them. And while she does eventually hook up with Yutaka, their relationship is shown to be much healthier.
  • Red Baron: Claims to be known as the "Bloodstained Cleaner", though it's unclear if she was being serious or not.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Kanade is less than pleased to learn she knows her phone number and home address.
  • Supreme Chef: She's such a good cook that Kanade is willing to bite the bullet and accept her help when she's trying improve her own cooking.
  • Theory Tunnelvision: Even in a series that runs on romantic misunderstandings, Matsuri stands out as someone who's practically impossible to convince she's wrong once she's made up her mind about something, no matter how much evidence stacks up to the contrary.
  • What Does She See in Him?: The thing about Kanade's infatuation with Fuyuhiko that frustrates her the most is how she has no idea what it is about this miserable, scrawny loser that makes her Banchou so much more fond of him than she is of her. Similarly, while she's willing to support Yutaka's "crush" on him, she's also not shy about questioning her taste in men and insists she can do better than him.
  • Yandere: She introduces herself by ambushing Fuyuhiko with a razor blade for getting too close to Kanade. While she stops trying to physically harm him when Kanade makes it clear she won't tolerate it, she still threatens him whenever she gets the chance.

     Yutaka Ushigome

Yutaka Ushigome (丑込 ゆたか)

"Did something troublesome happen again?"
Matsuri's best friend and fellow delinquent. She quickly figures out the misunderstanding the others are all caught up in, but mostly chooses to stay quiet about it.
First Appearance: Chapter 3

  • Adrenaline Makeover: Judging from flashbacks and anecdotes about her middle school days, she used to be a mousy, shy girl until Matsuri became a delinquent and made her her partner. Fighting alongside the girl she loved, along with a significant growth spurt and some fashion advice from Matsuri, transformed her into the stronger, more confident Yutaka we know today.
  • Animal Motifs: Oxen. She's the largest and physically strongest of Kanade's underlings, and is The Reliable One of the group. The "Ushi" in her name and her massive bust also bring cattle to mind.
  • Bully Magnet: While it never got quite as bad as it did with Fuyuhiko, Matsuri mentions a lot of the boys from their middle school liked to pick on Yutaka because they saw her as an easy target. Kanade, who has only ever known her as an imposing tough girl, can hardly even imagine it.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Aika often makes lecherous comments about her large breasts.
  • Can't Spit It Out:
    • She's too nervous to confess her love to Matsuri, as she's afraid it would destroy their friendship.
    • She figures out Fuyuhiko and Kanade's misunderstanding pretty quickly, but while she occasionally tries to drop hints about it, she never gives them a full explanation.
  • Characterization Marches On: In her first proper appearance in chapter 4, Yutaka had trouble standing up to Matsuri and would do anything she asked of her, no matter how stupid or dangerous she thought it was. Though she remains fiercely loyal to Matsuri for the whole series, this aspect of her personality is quickly dropped; in later chapters Yutaka is usually the one trying to rein her in and isn't afraid to call her an idiot or knock some sense into her whenever she's acting out of line.
  • Commonality Connection: Her and Fuyuhiko have quite a bit in common, and end up becoming good friends because of it. She's able to empathise with him due to her own history as a bullying victim, and chapter 25 features the two of them bonding over their shared hesitance to ask out the girls they look up to.
  • The Confidant: She becomes one for both Fuyuhiko and Kanade, who are willing to talk to her about things they're too nervous to say to each other.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Several of the girls in her class are seen swooning over how "cool" she is, and wish she'd involve herself in more class activities so they could spend more time around her.
  • Gamer Chick: It never comes up in the series proper, but the character profiles included in Volume 7 list First-Person Shooters as one of her likes.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: She used to wear glasses in middle school, but got rid of them once Matsuri told her she looked cooler without them. She does still wear them outside school, though.
  • Her Own Worst Enemy: For all the pain she puts herself through trying to hide it, once she does let her feelings for Matsuri slip she turns out to be very open-minded about the whole thing and happily agrees to go out with her.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: She's 5'7" and while she doesn't usually angst about it, she admits she wishes she was smaller while Kanade is complaining about her own height.
  • I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: The main reason why she hasn't acted on her feelings for Matsuri, despite being madly in love with her for years. It gets to the point where when she finally does let it slip, she immediately runs away to mope about how Matsuri probably hates her now.
  • I Got Bigger: Flashbacks to their middle school days show Yutaka used to be one head shorter than Matsuri, while in the present she's the taller of the two.
  • Lethal Chef: Matsuri claims the reason she got so good at cooking was to make up for Yutaka's hopelessness in the kitchen. Considering the only time we've seen Yutaka try to cook she made a horrible burnt mess, we can probably take her at her word on this.
  • Literally Loving Thy Neighbor: She lives next door to Matsuri, and has a longstanding crush on her.
  • Only Sane Woman: Between Fuyuhiko's rock-bottom self esteem, Kanade being the Master of the Mixed Message, and Matsuri's stubborn stupidity, Yutaka is normally the only one of them who understands what's really going on and often finds herself playing mediator.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: She's swapped out the skirt for a much longer one and has an open shirt with a sarashi underneath, giving her the image of an old-school delinquent.
  • The Reliable One: Is typically the first one her friends and classmates turn to whenever they need help or advice.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: She's often left feeling this way, being the only one among her friends who isn't prone to getting caught in romantic misunderstandings.
Yutaka: What kind of idiots have to gather up to create a situation as troublesome as this one...!?
  • Tsundere: Towards Matsuri. As exasperated and violent as she often gets with her, it's obvious she loves and respects her greatly.

     Aika Youdou

Aika Youdou (羊堂 愛佳)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/horrible_sheep.png
"I've missed you, Fuyuhiko! Or rather,
the terror-filled expressions you make!"
One of Fuyuhiko's old classmates and most persistant bullies. While she originally attended another high school, she started to miss her old punching bag and transferred into his class after the summer break.
First Appearance: Chapter 33

  • Ambiguously Bi: She makes no secret of her love for Fuyuhiko, going so far as to insist that he's the only person she'll ever love. Despite this, she also lusts after Yutaka, making lecherous comments about her breasts and trying to grope her whenever she gets the chance. In addition, while she likes to joke about stealing away Fuyuhiko for herself if he doesn't hook up with Kanade soon, on at least one occasion she's suggested she'd steal Kanade away from him instead.
  • Amusing Injuries: As a shameless Troll who loves antagonising a gang of delinquents, it's no surprise she gets beaten up a lot. She normally just laughs it off, though.
  • Animal Eyes: Bar-shaped pupils, tying into her sheep theming.
  • Animal Motifs: Sheep. Her fluffy white hair and bar-shaped pupils both tie into this, and she's represented by a cartoony sheep in a brief Imagine Spot in chapter 54. Despite this, her personality is as far from the stereotypical sheep as you can get.
  • Animals Hate Her: Animals run away at the sight of her, as seen with a group of rabbits when she first shows up, and with Fuyuhiko's pet cat when she pays a visit to his house.
  • The Bully: An unrepentant sadist who takes joy in making other students' lives miserable.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Makes no excuses for the way she acts, and actively gloats about how awful a person she is.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She's known Fuyuhiko since elementary school, and has been in love with him for almost as long. It's unlikely it ever would have gone any further than a one-sided crush though, even had Fuyuhiko and Kanade never met, seeing as Fuyuhiko is turned off by her sadistic nature and while he's enough of an Extreme Doormat that he likely wouldn't fight it if Aika decided to make him her boyfriend, she's not comfortable with dragging him into a relationship against his will.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: She made one with Fuyuhiko back in elementary school. Nothing came of it, and she looks back on it as an embarrassing mistake from when she was still a naive child.invoked
  • Crush Blush: When Tasuku confesses his love for her and tells her he truly wants to make her happy, she tells him he's out of luck as she'll never let go of her one-sided feelings for Fuyuhiko... while also turning her back to him so that he can't see her face is bright red.
  • Didn't See That Coming: From her first time meeting them together, she's already convinced that Fuyuhiko and Kanade are a couple, and brushes off Fuyuhiko's claims that they're Just Friends as him lying to protect her. It never crosses her mind that he isn't even aware of their relationship until Kanade calls him her boyfriend in front of his face and he reacts with surprise.
  • Expelled from Every Other School: When she first transfers in, she mentions she's already been kicked out of several prestigious high schools for bad behaviour.
  • Fetishized Abuser: Averted. The reason she never tried to start a relationship with Fuyuhiko is because she was afraid she'd become one of these.
  • First-Name Basis: She always calls Fuyuhiko by his first name; a sign of the long history the two have shared. She also starts addressing Kanade this way once she decides to make her her first real friend.
  • Friendless Background: Thanks to her nasty personality, she's never had any friends.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: She settles into this role among Kanade's friend group once her introductory arc is over. Fuyuhiko is still uncomfortable around her due to her long history of bullying, Kanade can't stand the way she treats Fuyuhiko, Yutaka is disgusted by her constant sexual harrassment, and Matsuri hates her for causing her friends so much grief, but she'll still happily hang around them no matter how many times they tell her she's not welcome.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: When she learns that Kanade has been making advances on her childhood crush, she takes great pleasure in tormenting and mocking her, interfering with their relationship wherever possible. To drive the point home, she also literally has green eyes, and the mangaka has used this exact phrase to describe her. In the end however, she's willing to concede that Fuyuhiko would be happier with Kanade than he would with her, and gives them her blessing while keeping any jealousy she feels to herself.
  • Hate Sink: Initially, her main role is to gleefully torment Fuyuhiko while avoiding any serious repercussions for it, which certainly doesn't endear her to the other characters, nor to the audience. While this becomes less prominent as we learn more about her character, her sadistic nature never truly goes away.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: As much as she enjoys pulling meanspirited pranks on Fuyuhiko, she'll step up to defend him the moment someone else tries to harm him.
  • Insult to Rocks: In a self-inflicted example of this, she complains that Kanade calling her a "sadist" is an insult to actual sadists. After all, BDSM is supposed to take place between consenting parties, and none of her victims ever consented to her bullying.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Though she denies it, it's clear that she would love to be Fuyuhiko's girlfriend. However, she's aware that them becoming a couple would only lead to an unhealthy, abusive relationship, and so has given up on pursuing him in favor of trying to hook him up with someone who'd treat him better.
  • Leg Focus: Along with Kanade, certain angles in the manga clearly like to highlight Aika's well-developed, shapely legs.
  • Loving Bully: She's had a crush on Fuyuhiko since childhood, but the only way she's able to express that is by mercilessly bullying him. Unlike most examples, it's not because she doesn't understand her feelings or is embarrassed by them; she's fully aware of what she's doing and proudly admits to it.
Aika: It's in my nature to torment the one I like.
  • Mirror Character: Her and Kanade have quite a bit of common ground, even ignoring the fact they're both in love with the same boy. One example Aika draws attention to is how neither of them had any friends growing up because they chose to live life the way they wanted to, not caring how other people saw them.
  • New Transfer Student: Transfers to Fuyuhiko's class at the end of summer break.
  • Old Shame: One of the few times she's ever lost her cool was when the subject of her Childhood Marriage Promise with Fuyuhiko was brought up.invoked
Aika: Let my dark past, from before I was self-aware, be null and void...
  • Shipper on Deck: She sees Kanade as the perfect match for Fuyuhiko. Someone who loves him as much as he loves her, someone who can protect him from people who wants to hurt or exploit him, and most importantly, someone she enjoys messing with almost as much as him.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Unfortunately for Fuyuhiko, and fortunately for everyone else, he's the only one Aika shows any romantic interest in.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: There's the occasional hint that her behavior is just a front she puts up to scare off other people before they get too close to her. At the very least, this is the theory Tasuku subscribes to.
  • Stealth Pun: Her Animal Motif and dark clothing are both very fitting, considering she's something of a black sheep among the cast.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After admitting that she wants Fuyuhiko to have a happy life with Kanade, she starts to ease up on her treatment of him. While she still enjoys teasing him, she's no longer as meanspirited about it and usually does so with the end goal of helping the two grow closer together.
  • Trickster Mentor: Becomes one in the time between Fuyuhiko finding out Kanade loves him and him telling her he loves her too. She does everything she can to help them get together; unfortunately, most of her methods involve putting one or both of them in embarrassing situations.
  • Unrequited Love Lasts Forever: Even if she's accepted that Fuyuhiko will never reciprocate her feelings, she still can't bring herself to move on and find love with someone else, as to her, that would be the same as severing the last remaining tie connecting her to her childhood friend.
  • Weakness Turns Her On: Unlike Kanade, this is very much the case for her, as her attraction towards Fuyuhiko seems to be firmly rooted in how much fun she has bullying him.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She has white hair as part of her sheep theming, and it contrasts heavily with her cruel, sadistic nature.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: She sees herself as a horrible bitch who brings nothing but misery to the people around her, which is why she's so surprised when Tasuku admits he's fallen for her, pointing out her decision not to act on her feelings for Fuyuhiko so he can find someone he truly loves shows that deep down she has a selfless side and puts other people's happiness before her own.

Tasuku Toramaru (寅丸 佑)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tasuku_toramaru_profile_image_v2.png
"I just want to enjoy all the love stories
of this world!"
Kanade's younger brother. He has a huge soft spot for romance stories, and for this reason he takes a great personal interest in his sister's relationship with Fuyuhiko.
First Appearance: Chapter 11

  • The Ace: He's tall, in great shape, gets good grades, has plenty of friends at school, and is a great cook. He shines in just about every area his sister falls short.
  • Animal Motifs: Tigers, much like his sister.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Kanade certainly thinks so, what with his constant meddling in her relationship with Fuyuhiko.
  • Big Little Brother: He positively dwarfs his older sister, with a height comparison chart showing she barely even reaches up to his chest.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Tasuku's obsession with romance stories means that he's always willing to give his sister advice and support her romantic endeavours with Fuyuhiko, however, he also expresses glee at all the problems and misunderstandings the couple undergo because it makes it more entertaining for him. It goes so far that when he first meets Aika he thanks her for tormenting his sister and Fuyuhiko because it has made the whole situation more interesting.
  • Brutal Honesty: He spares no quarter when talking with his sister, discussing her shortcomings in the bluntest ways possible.
  • Face of a Thug: Behind his imposing figure and scary face lie a hopeless romantic.
  • Genre Savvy: He's an avid reader of romance manga, and most of the relationship advice he gives his sister is based on common tropes from the genre.
  • I Got Bigger: Chapter 63 has a flashback of Kanade protecting him when they were both young. The small, scared child we see him as then is practically unrecognisable as the huge, intimidating teen he is now.
Kanade: He... really stopped being adorable, didn't he? Both inside and out...
  • Kendo Team Captain: The manga itself only mentions that he's active in sports, but Kashima would later elaborate on Twitter that he was the captain of his school's Kendo club, complete with a drawing of him with the uniform and bamboo sword, and noting that it made for a fun contrast with his more feminine interests.
  • Love Freak: Every time he makes an appearance, get ready to hear him wax poetic about love and romance.
  • Odd Friendship: With Aika. Despite their contrasting personalities, when she pays a visit to the Toramaru household it doesn't take long before they turn into a two-man Greek Chorus for Kanade's love life as they munch on pocky together. By the end of the series, this has evolved into Opposites Attract on Tasuku's side.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He's a tall, well-built, athletic young man whose interests include rom-coms and collecting cute clothing and accessories. In his own words, "Men are made of sugar and spice too!"
  • Shipper on Deck: Upon learning of his sister's relationship with Fuyuhiko, Tasuku immediately starts meddling, using his vast knowledge of romance stories to help them become closer and more intimate with each other. Granted, he's mostly doing it for his own amusement, but still.
  • The Stoic: While he sometimes shows more emotion while discussing romance with Kanade, most of the time he remains completely stone-faced.
  • Supreme Chef: With their parents' long absences from home, Tasuku has taken it upon himself to cook meals for him and his sister, and he's evidently gotten very good at it. He was the first one Kanade came to when she wanted to improve her own cooking, though he turned her down as he didn't want her making a mess of the kitchen, and when a fan asked Kashima who was the best cook between Tasuku, Fuyuhiko, and Matsuri, she replied that while it was close and all of them were skilled in different areas, Tasuku was probably the best overall.
  • Sweet Tooth: He loves sweets and is often seen snacking on them, with ice cream being a particular favourite of his.
  • Younger Than They Look: You'd never think he was a middle schooler at first glance. This works to his advantage when he sneaks into his sister's high school; all he has to do is wear their uniform and everyone assumes he must be a student there.

     Miyuki Unoki

Miyuki Unoki (卯之木 深雪)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miyuki_unoki_profile_image.png
"My brother's always helping me,
even though he's super weak..."
Fuyuhiko's kid sister. While she's weak and prone to bullying just like her brother, she has a much sunnier disposition.
First Appearance: Chapter 63

  • Animal Motifs: Rabbits, just like her brother. Though unlike him, she plays up the cuter aspects of them a lot more than their nature as prey animals.
  • Cheerful Child: Though we first see her scared and crying while being harassed by bullies, she quickly brightens up after Kanade rescues her and whenever we see her from that point on, she's all smiles.
  • The Ghost: We first find out Fuyuhiko has a younger sister in chapter 2, but it takes until chapter 63 for her to properly make an appearance.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Has a pair of these.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Another thing she shares with Fuyuhiko. She's the one who named his pet cat and is happy to help take care of him, and before that they were both regular customers at a cat café.
  • Love Freak: Downplayed when compared to Tasuku, but she's also a huge love story addict and almost all of her appearances following her introduction involve her getting excited over one, whether it be the fictional romances in her favourite manga and TV dramas, or her brother's relationship with Kanade.
  • One Degree of Separation: In chapter 63, while having a conversation with Kanade, Miyuki brings up her kind older brother. Later, when she gets back home, she tells Fuyuhiko all about the cool girl she met in the park. Despite how close they are, neither of them have any idea who Miyuki's talking about.
  • The Pollyanna: Kanade is quickly overwhelmed by her relentless positivity.
  • Shared Family Quirks: In an unfortunate case, she's just as much of a Bully Magnet as her brother.
  • Shipper on Deck: While she doesn't know her identity, just realising her brother has fallen in love with a girl is enough to get her excited and makes her want to know everything she can about their relationship. She'd probably be even more supportive if she knew this girl was Kanade, considering how much she admires her.

     Fuyuhiko's Mom
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unokis_mom_profile_image.png
"It's a pleasure to meet you~"
The mother of Fuyuhiko and Miyuki. Has a carefree, cheerful personality.
First Appearance: Chapter 49

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: She pats Fuyuhiko on the head while calling him a good boy right in front of his sorta-girlfriend. She also acts like one to Aika despite not being her mother, bringing up cute anecdotes from when she was a kid that she'd really like to forget.invoked
  • Eyes Always Shut: Downplayed. Shots of her with her eyes open are few and far between, but they do exist.
  • Good Parents: She's loving and supportive towards Fuyuhiko, and while we aren't shown much of her interactions with Miyuki, from what we do see they seem to be on very good terms.
  • No Name Given: While we do know her family name, we never find out her first name.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Seemingly nothing can disrupt her cheery, laid-back demeanor.
  • Shipper on Deck: She quickly figures out Kanade is the reason her son had been much happier as of late, and makes it clear that not only does Kanade have her permission to date Fuyuhiko, she actively encourages her to.
  • Unnamed Parent: One of the few recurring characters to not be given a name.

     Kanade's Mom
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toramaruis_mom_profile_image.png
"You are truly a shame to our family."
Kanade and Tasuku's strict, wealthy mother. While absent at the start of the series, she eventually returns home to find her daughter is still behaving like a delinquent, and has also found a boyfriend. She's not happy about it.
First Appearance: Chapter 73

  • Accent Slip-Up: The shock of Fuyuhiko's sudden proposal to her daughter in chapter 76 causes her to lapse back into her native rural dialect.
  • Animal Motifs: As with the rest of her family, tigers.
  • I Have No Daughter!: Threatens to strip Kanade of her family name if she doesn't break up with Fuyuhiko. Of course, considering her overbearing nature, this was probably just an empty threat.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: As befitting of her old-fashioned, traditional nature, she's always seen wearing a kimono and also insists her children do when at home.
  • Moment Killer: The first time she appears, it's to cut her daughter's date with Fuyuhiko short by demanding she return home immediately. A couple chapters later, she promptly brings the mood down following Fuyuhiko's Love Confession by showing up to express her disappointment and trying to get Kanade to break up with him.
  • No Guy Wants an Amazon: She's a firm believer in this, seeing Kanade's tomboyishness as a sign she's not ready for a relationship yet.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Is firmly opposed to her daughter being with Fuyuhiko and tries to pressure her into cutting ties with him.
  • Stealth Pun: Taking both her Animal Motif and her strict parenting into account, she's a tiger mom.
  • The Stoic: Her expression never changes from an icy glare, and she speaks with an authoritive tone without ever raising her voice.
    • Not So Stoic: At least, until Kanade and Fuyuhiko start talking about getting married, to which she starts yelling at Kanade for thinking that a girl who only knows how to fight and has to rely on her younger brother to take care of the house is even remotely prepared to be a wife, complete with cartoonish face-pulling.
  • Unnamed Parent: Just like Fuyuhiko's mother, we don't learn her first name.

Others of Note

     Toramaru the Cat

Toramaru (とら丸)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kitty_toramaru.png
"Meow."
Fuyuhiko's mischevious pet cat.
First Appearance: Chapter 11

     "Tzuka"

Tsukaji (塚地)

Voiced by: Chisako Takao

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rival_delinquent.png
"Like hell I can leave things be without winning!!"
A delinquent leader from another school who fancies herself as Kanade's rival. She shows up to challenge her from time to time, though she's yet to win a single fight with her.
First Appearance: Chapter 1

  • Ascended Extra: Originally just one of Kanade's many Unknown Rivals, in her second appearence she abducts Fuyuhiko in order to blackmail her.
  • Boisterous Weakling: She may talk tough, but whenever she picks a fight with someone who can actually fight back, she gets trounced in seconds.
  • Dirty Coward: She first attacks Kanade while under the impression she'd quit being a delinquent, yet still brought in her lackeys for a three-against-one fight. When that fails, she resorts to blackmail.
  • I Have Your Wife: When it becomes clear she can't take Kanade in a fair fight, she kidnaps her boyfriend instead.
  • Moment Killer: She only ever seems to pick a fight when Kanade is trying to spend some time together with Fuyuhiko.
  • My Nayme Is: According to a caption, Tzuka is a shortened version of "Tsukaji". Presumably, she added the "z" to make it sound cooler. note
  • No Name Given: She narrowly manages to avoid this; while she goes most of the series without a name, we eventually learn it during her final appearance in chapter 73. She also has two lackeys who are never named in the series itself, but according to Word of God, they're called Hosoya and Miki.invoked
  • Small Role, Big Impact: As far as recurring characters go she's incredibly minor, yet she was the catalyst for Kanade giving up her position as Banchou for a time.
  • Unknown Rival: To her, Kanade is her hated rival. To Kanade, she's just one of the many other delinquents she beats up on a daily basis. Not even the kidnapping incident was enough to change this, as the next time Fuyuhiko and Kanade run into her, they don't even recognise her.
