    Buddy Tyrannosaurus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/97a785dbac82603989d130597a170447.jpg
Voiced by: Phillip Corlett (seasons 1-2), Sean Thomas (season 3), Dayton Wall (season 4), Chance Hurstfield (season 5)
Debut: Season 1 episode 1a "Valley of the Stygimolochs"

A friendly and precocious T. rex adopted by the Pteranodon family.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: He knows a lot about dinosaurs for his age, and sometimes acts more mature than he really is.
  • All-Loving Hero: Owing to Buddy being adopted by Pteranodons, he is quite open-minded, friendly, and idealistic. He tries to make friends with and understand every character in the series. In "The Egg Stealer?" he defended Keenan when the latter was accused of stealing eggs, despite the fact that Keenan is a bully towards him.
  • Big Little Brother: Tiny is the oldest and smallest of the Pteranodon siblings, whereas Buddy is the youngest but, by virtue of his species, will grow up to become the largest.
  • Character Catchphrase:
    • "I have a hypothesis!" Usually followed by Tiny (or another character) saying a variation of, "That's an idea you can test."
    • "Do you mind if we compare features? It's kinda my thing."
  • Child of Two Worlds: He gets along with the Tyrannosaurus family just fine, but he feels conflicted about the possibility of leaving his adoptive family behind when he grows up.
  • Commonality Connection: Buddy becomes fast friends with Annie due to them both being T. rexes.
  • Constantly Curious: Buddy always wants to learn new things.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Pteranodon lived about 20 million years before Tyrannosaurus, and the learning segment for "Great Big Stomping Dinosaur Feet" even points out that that T. rex didn't live at the same time as the other Pteranodon Terrace locals. The Dinosaur Train travels through a time tunnel whenever the family visits Rexville. Together, these imply that wherever Buddy came from, his egg wasn't laid in the same epoch that he lives in.
  • Happily Adopted: Despite the fact that Buddy is a completely different species than the rest of his family, they love each other the same.
  • I Am Who?: The first few episodes focus on Buddy trying to figure out just what type of dinosaur he is.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Buddy is a T. rex raised by Pteranodons.
  • Leitmotif: His music theme is a steel drum beat (or at least an instrument similar to that).
  • Nice Guy: He wants to be friends with everyone.
  • The Nose Knows: Buddy has a great sense of smell. This is one of the clues to the fact that he is a T. rex.
  • Orange/Blue Contrast: He is orange and also has blue stripes on his body.
  • Terrifying Tyrannosaur: His song "I'm a T. rex" is about how Tyrannosaurus is the biggest and most fearsome predator in his part of the Cretaceous.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He loves carrion.
  • Token Flyer: Inverted. He's the only member of his family who can't fly.
  • Vibrant Orange: Buddy is an orange Tyrannosaurus with blue stripes. His defining character traits are his curiosity and willingness to learn about other dinosaurs and time periods. Hence, he tends to come across as quite extroverted and excitable, although he does show signs of being shy at times.

    Tiny Pteranodon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dt_tiny.png
Voiced by: Claire Corlett
Debut: Season 1 episode 1a "Valley of the Stygimolochs"

The oldest of the Pteranodon siblings, Tiny is a clever and courageous companion on Buddy's adventures.

  • "I Am" Song: Tiny has a song called "My Name is Tiny," about how she confidently approaches new dinosaurs.
  • Leitmotif: She has a twinkly piano piece that plays when she talks.
  • Lost Toy Grievance: In the episode "Tiny's Tiny Doll", she accidentally leaves her titular favourite toy at the Velociraptors' nest, and she can't sleep without it. The boys make her a new one, but fortunately Velma and Valerie arrange for a local pterosaur to return it to her.
  • Plucky Girl: Tiny is smart, brave, and has high confidence when she meets new dinosaurs. Tiny is so brave that she often wanders off a little too far, but Buddy is always there to help her get back on the right track.
  • She's a Man in Japan: Tiny is a boy in the Czech dub.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tiny is the tomboy to Shiny's girly girl. Tiny loves going on adventures.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: She loves eating fish so much that she even sings about it in multiple episodes.
  • Youthful Freckles: She’s a young girl with several freckles covering the top of her beak.

    Shiny Pteranodon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dt_shiny.png
Voiced by: Erika Shaye-Gair
Debut: Season 1 episode 1a "Valley of the Stygimolochs" (cameo); episode 1b "Tiny Loves Fish" (first speaking role)

A bit of a show-off, Shiny is the second-oldest of the Pteranodon kids. She loves shiny things and prefers to stay home while her family goes on the Dinosaur Train.

  • Aborted Declaration of Love: In "Gilbert Visits the Nest", before Gilbert goes back home, Shiny is about to tell him that she likes him, but she says "I like you....visiting! I like you visiting!" and gives an awkward laugh.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Shiny is unable to confess how she truly feels to Gilbert.
  • Character Tics: Her beak sometimes shines when she laughs.
  • Control Freak: Shiny is incredibly bossy to her siblings at times. She takes her bossiness to the extreme in "Hootin' Hadrosaurs", where she becomes 'mom' and micromanages the others nonstop.
  • Meaningful Name: True to her name, Shiny likes collecting shiny things like shells.
  • Primal Fear: Shiny is badly afraid of the dark and doesn't react well in "Mom Was a Kid Once" when Annie asks her to join her in exploring a deep, dark cave. She eventually flies away in terror and returns to the nest, saying she's done playing with Annie for the day, and possibly forever.
  • Shrinking Violet: She can be rather timid in social situations.
  • Signature Laugh: She snorts when she laughs.
  • Team Mom: Since Shiny is the second-oldest of the kids, she often tries to be the 'mom' of the bunch by bossing the others around. As you can tell, she isn't quite good at it.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Tiny's tomboy. Shiny is quite feminine and prefers to stay behind rather than go on train trips.
  • True Blue Femininity: Shiny is a Girly Girl and cyan, while the other Pteranodons are green.

    Don Pteranodon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dt_don.png
Voiced by: Alexander Matthew Marr (Seasons 1-2), Laura Marr (Season 3-5)
Debut: Season 1 episode 1a "Valley of the Stygimolochs" (cameo); episode 1b "Tiny Loves Fish" (first speaking role)

The second-youngest of the Pteranodon kids, Don is mellow yet goofy, and has an affinity for digging holes.

  • Black Dot Pupils: Don stands out from the rest of the Pteranodon family by having simple black pupils with no colored irises.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Don is terrible at keeping secrets. In "Surprise Party", he nearly told Buddy about the surprise party multiple times.
  • Character Catchphrase: "La-la-LOOO!"
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Don is quite the air-headed oddball. His hobbies include digging holes and singing 'la la loo'.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": His name is the last syllable of Pteranodon.
  • Odd Name Out: His name doesn't rhyme with Tiny or Shiny, nor does it end with a 'y.'
  • Plucky Comic Relief: He appears to be a silly and somewhat dimwitted comic relief when compared to the rest of his family.

    Mrs. Pteranodon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dt_ga_mom_05.png
Voiced by: Ellen Kennedy

The mother of the Pteranodon kids. She usually accompanies Buddy and Tiny on the Dinosaur Train.

  • Good Parents: She's an intelligent and caring mother.
  • Happily Married: Loves her husband very much.
  • Leitmotif: Her dialogue is accompanied by a gentle harp.
  • Parental Love Song: "The Good Mom" ends with Mrs. Pteranodon signing a lullaby to her kids about how no matter what happens, she'll always be their mom.
  • Unnamed Parent: Her first name is never revealed.
  • Verbal Tic: She squawks when she's happy.

    Mr. Pteranodon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/633x475_6.png
Voiced by: Colin Murdock
Debut: Season 1 episode 1b "Tiny Loves Fish"

The father of the Pteranodon kids. He usually stays behind while the others go on the Dinosaur Train.

  • Bumbling Dad: Downplayed. While he's by no means an idiot, he's prone to getting flustered (such as when he meets his favorite dinoball player), and his rivalry with Larry Lambeosaurus gets him into trouble a few times.
  • Good Parents: He's a supportive father.
  • Happily Married: Loves his wife very much.
  • Leitmotif: His dialogue is accompanied by a bassoon.
  • Motifs: He has a coach motif. His squawk sounds like a coach's whistle and he acts like a coach, calling the family "Team Pteranodon.'
  • Unnamed Parent: His first name is never given.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He gets quite jittery when on any Dinosaur Train Industries vehicles not named the Dinosaur Train. He got airsick on the Dinosaur Train Zeppelin at first but got over it by learning to steer it. On the Dinosaur Drill Train, he becomes panicky when thinking about the prospect of being stuck underground.

    The Conductor / "Sonny Boy"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/characterconductor.jpg
Voiced by: Ian James Corlett
Debut: Season 1 episode 1a "Valley of the Stygimolochs"

The intelligent and warm-hearted conductor of the Dinosaur Train, and a friend to the Pteranodon family.

  • Character Catchphrase:
    • "Time Tunnel Approaching!"
    • "Tickets Please!"
    • "All aboard!"
    • "Bless my scales and feathers!"
  • Everybody Calls Him "Barkeep": Everyone calls him "the Conductor" except his mother and Thurston.
  • Figure It Out Yourself: It's strongly implied that the Conductor always knew that Buddy is a Tyrannosaurus rex and could have just told him, but let him figure it out for himself because he knew it would mean more to him than for him to just tell him.
Conductor: Yep. I had a feeling he was a T. rex.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: While most of the dinosaurs are naked, he wears a hat and vest.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am a Dwarf Today?: In nearly every episode, the Conductor reminds the kids of one of his Troodon traits, such as his large toe claw, his intelligence, or his night vision.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: He's a special friend to the Pteranodon kids. He spends so much time with them specifically, that he is a main character.
  • Interspecies Romance: He's in love with Erma Eoraptor.
  • Large Ham: He loves shouting and has an almost theatrical flair to him.
  • Legacy Character: The Conductor's mother was the Dinosaur Train's previous conductor. Also, the Conductor's nephew Gilbert is a junior conductor in training.
  • Leitmotif: He has a twangy guitar tune that plays when he speaks.
  • Mundane Utility: Being a Troodon, uses his hindclaws for punching tickets.
  • Nice Guy: He is a friendly, playful, and charming conductor.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His mother and Thurston call him "Sonny Boy" in a doting and condescending way, respectively, suggesting it's a diminutive nickname.
  • Rail Enthusiast: He absolutely loves trains, especially the Dinosaur Train. One episode even features him singing about his love for trains.
  • That Reminds Me of a Song: Mr. Conductor often says that something reminds him of a song, but is hesitant to sing unless the kids beg him.
  • Time-Travel Romance: An extreme example; the Conductor — a Troodon, one of the last dinosaurs, is in a relationship with Erma — an Eoraptor, one of the first dinosaurs. They live over 160 million years apart — the same time difference as it would be if, say, a Stegosaurus started dating a HUMAN — but it's very clear that they love each other.

A South American theropod who spends most of her time in the Dinosaur Train's observation car.

  • Leitmotif: Flamenco music plays whenever she's on-screen.
  • Odd Name Out: Along with being one of the few characters whose name doesn't rhyme or alliterate with their genus, she's also one of the even fewer with a "the" in the middle.

    Ned "the Quadruped" Brachiosaurus
Voiced by: Kathleen Barr
Debut: Season 1 episode 4b "Ned the Quadruped"

A junior conductor-in-training who spends a lot of time on the Dinosaur Train. Because he's so large, he always has to stick his neck through the window, but it's so long that he can look into other cars.

  • Gentle Giant Sauropod: He is a very friendly long-necked dinosaur.
  • In-Series Nickname: Ned is called "the Quadruped" because he has four legs, as he explains to Tiny and Buddy in his introductory episode.
  • Mighty Glacier: Because he's a Brachiosaurus, he is big and strong, but also quite slow.

The Conductor's nephew, a junior conductor-in-training who serves as the Pteranodon family's tour guide during their world tour.

  • Chaste Toons: He is the Conductor’s nephew, even though his parents are never seen.
  • Large Ham: He is notable for energetic greetings upon entering a room or within a group of people.
  • Leitmotif: A higher-pitched version of the Conductor's banjo.
  • Young and in Charge: When the Conductor falls ill, Gilbert volunteers to take over conducting on the Dinosaur Train. Unfortunately, he keeps having to consult the manual due to his inexperience, and he's so short that he has to stand on top of a book and jump to pull down the projector screen.

  • Cartoony Tail: Has a much smaller tail than the real Chriostenotes.
  • I Want My Mommy!: He screams for his mom after he gets scared by Tank's frill.
  • Jerkass: He's one of the few recurring antagonists, and frequently tries to boss around the Pteranodon kids. For example, in his debut episode, he calls the game they're playing "boring" and tries to force them to play with him; and in another, he says that the Pteranodon kids couldn't possibly win Larry's game because he said the dinosaur who collects the most leaves wins.
  • Leitmotif: His dialogue is accompanied by an electric guitar.
  • Paper Tiger: He acts all tough, but he runs away in fear when he sees Tank's frill.

  • Expecting Someone Taller: When Buddy and Tiny hear her thunderous footsteps, they expect her to be a fully-grown adult, but instead she's a child slightly shorter than Buddy.

  • Leitmotif: Her dialogue is accompanied by the bass and electric guitar riffs from the song "Great Big Stomping Dinosaur Feet".

    Archelon babies

  • Face of a Thug: His horns help scare off other dinosaurs, but he's really a nice person.
  • Forehead of Doom: True to his species, he has a humongous forehead. Shiny even rubs his dome in one episode. Spikey says that it represents good luck, which is true according to feng shui.
  • Headbutting Pachy: Defied; he tells the Pteranodon siblings that he doesn't need to headbutt anyone because his horns are intimidating enough.
