The Thirteen Empyreans

Born in primeval times, the Thirteen Empyreans are the first thirteen sapient Equids to ever exist after King Equus himself, predating even Ponykind by tens of millions of years. Though born mortal, all of them would eventually ascend to godhood under the guidance of their parent and/or siblings, and would join King Equus in guiding and raising the countless Equid races and civilizations which would follow them. Torn apart and driven into hiding by tragedy around the time of the 'Twilight of the Alicorns', the remaining Thirteen Empyreans had recently returned from the mists of legend in the Fourth Age to guide their charges or pursue their own duties/agendas once more.

    General
  • Been There, Shaped History: They've been around since the very earliest beginnings of Equinekind and helped their father and creator, King Equus, mold their evolution throughout millions of years. Furthermore, many of their children, such as Queen Mab II, Morning Star, the Three Deaths, and Golden Scepter have shaped both species and the world as a whole over the aeons.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: While the Empyreans were plagued with numerous problems and tensions beforehand, the fateful family brawl was the last straw because it led to Plasmatio Equus being murdered when she tried intervening, and the banishment of [REDACTED], the Fallen Empyrean, for his crime. Mana Equus chewing them all out for their actions afflicted them with so much shame that they eventually separated and scattered across the corners of the earth.
  • Divine Parentage: In addition to being creators of their own Equid races, the Thirteen Empyreans also raised children of their own, whether biological or adoptive. Emperor Golden Scepter and Queen Mzazi are just two recorded examples who managed to survive up to the present Age.
  • Divine Ranks: They all bear the divine rank of "Preeminent", the second-highest divine rank a deity could possess on Equus at least, though third if one counts "Grand Primeval" as its own rank.
  • The Dreaded: Being the oldest, most powerful Equid deities besides their creator, they're seen and treated with both fear and respect by most who know of them. Notably, even Iniquitous is unwilling to cross one of them and acknowledges that if She couldn't overcome the Empyreans' children (like Emperor Golden Scepter), then She couldn't hope to overcome the Empyreans themselves. This is shown with her interactions with the Empyrean Omnia Equus, merely visiting her "library", asking her to see Her book, and accepting Omnia's refusal to give Her anything else from the library.
  • Expy: Collectively, they're one to the Thirteen Primes. Like the Thirteen Primes, the Empyreans are a group of thirteen Physical Gods who were the first of their kind, created by an entity who is their father by all intents and purposes (Primus, King Equus). They also played a collective role in creating and shaping certain races into what they are now (Transformers, Equinekind). Unfortunately, like the Primes the Thirteen Empyreans' closely-knit relationship would fall apart when a few of them engaged in highly illegal and unethical activities, leading to tragedy when a traitorous member known as "The Fallen" accidentally murdered their lover during a fight (Megatronus Prime and Solus Prime, [REDACTED] and Plasmatio Equus). Devastated and heartbroken, the survivors went their seperate ways... but unlike the Thirteen Primes, the Thirteen Empyreans would reemerge in the public eye after countless Ages passed, allowing people to record entries about them. The deceased Empyreans, Plasmatio and Mana Equus, would also reincarnate themselves in the present day as established characters of the setting, though in Mana's case, she ended up reincarnating as multiple people.
  • Fantasy Pantheon: The Thirteen Empyreans were Equinekind's first pantheon, with their father and creator, King Equus, as their Top God. What makes them a notable example is that they served as a pantheon for the Alicorn Civilization, which itself was populated by deities like them.
  • Large and in Charge: A meeting between Omnia Equus and Vicearch Iniquitous reveals the Empyreans' true forms are gigantic to the point of being larger than Iniquitous herself by a considerable margin; Gigans Equus, the creator of Equine Giantkind, is naturally the largest of them all. The only exception is Minima Equus, who is much smaller than his 'siblings' by conventional standards, though he is still quite massive by the standards of tiny Equine races like the Breezies.
  • The Maker: Following their Ascensions, each of the Thirteen Empyreans would go on to create their own Equine races, such as Equine Giantkind (Gigans Equus) and the Breezies (Minima Equus). They would in turn be emulated by several of their own children who did the same, leading to the creation of modern Ponykind.
  • No-Sell: To showcase just how powerful and experienced the Thirteen Empyreans are compared to modern-day Alicorns, they often tank and survive attacks that would have crippled or killed younger gods.
  • The Older Immortal: They are significantly older than nearly all of Ponykind/Equinekind and even the ancient Alicorns, being among the first Ponies/Equines to exist.
  • The Old Gods: They were Equinekind's first deities alongside their creator and father, King Equus, predating the Equine genus itself, and were already ancient when the Alicorn Civilization came to be. They mostly vanished from history after its fall... but they're starting to resurface in the modern day.
  • Power Gives You Wings: All of them have ten wings as a signifier of their extreme age and power.
  • Precursors: All of the Thirteen Empyreans were born as sapient Eohippus, the earliest incarnations of modern Equinekind, and thus had traits like a Zebra-like tail, toed hooves, and stripes. While the Eohippus became extinct as a race via evolution, the Empyreans themselves remained by Ascending to godhood, becoming the last of their kind in the process. They're also responsible for helping develop many early Equine civilizations, paving the way for the creation of the fabled Alicorn Civilization.
  • Time Abyss: They're the first thirteen 'equines' created by King Equus and were extremely ancient when the Alicorn Civilization came to be. Though it may be more accurate to say they're the first thirteen Equids created by King Equus, as they're explicitly more similar to the prehistoric Hyracotherium, the ancestor of all equine species, than modern ponies. They're all Preeminent tier deities, making them at a bare minimum 10 million years old, but due to when the first equids evolved, likely closer to 50 million.
  • Winged Unicorn: All of them are Alicorns, though they're specifically Eohippus Alicorns due to all of them being the first sapient Equids King Equus ever created. Their sheer age has made them extremely eldritch, their true forms being ten-winged Alicorns with their mane and tails showing magical images and their wing feathers being made out of energy.

    Clara Equus, the First Empyrean

Classification: Ethereal/Ascendant

Portfolio: Good, Light, Beauty

Rank: Preeminent

Clara Equus (her entry here) is the Alicorn goddess of Good, Light, and Beauty, and is the first-born of the Thirteen Empyreans.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: She's an Alicorn goddess who embodies Good, Light, and Beauty.
  • Expy: She's based on Prima.
  • Last of His Kind: Inverted. She is the very first sapient mortal Equid. If King Equus is the father of all Equidkind, this makes her technically the mother of all Equidkind, as all sapient Equids mortal or divine down to modern Ponykind are descended from her.
  • The Old Gods: While the Empyreans as a whole are the oldest Equid deities on the planet, she is the oldest of them all, being the first mortal Equid to be granted sapience by King Equus.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Said one to a Fallen pantheon of Titan-level deities she helped battle before delivering them all a One-Hit Polykill.
    Clara Equus: BEGONE.
  • So Proud of You: Despite her own sorrow and conflicted feelings towards her Fallen son, Morning Star, she tells Sirius during their first meeting that she is very proud of her granddaughter for redeeming sinners.
Clara Equus: I'm very proud of you, my granddaughter.
Sirius Evening-Desire: Wait, you... you don't hate me?
Clara Equus: Why should I? You have done nothing wrong. In fact, you like your brother Luminiferous are everything your father... my son... should had been. I know many had doubted or scorn you for who you are, for what you do, be they good, evil or just in between... but I don't, and I believe neither do your great-grandfather.
  • Top God: With Equus's absence, Clara Equus is effectively the oldest, most powerful equid deity on Equus and the leader of the surviving Thirteen, even if they're scattered.
  • World's Strongest Man: With her creator MIA, Clara Equus is the most powerful equid deity presently on Equus.
    • In a recent drabble, she intervened in a battle against a Fallen pantheon of Titan-level deities which took the entire Church of the Stars and several other allied pantheons to face. After literally over-powering that pantheon's Top God single-hoofed and taking a whole barrage of divine attacks from him and the Fallen pantheon without a scratch, she proceed to quite literally one-shot all of them with a single blast of divine light, reducing them all to crumbling ashes and even containing the catastrophic meltdown of their divine powers nigh-instantly with a wave of her horn and magic.

    Tempus Equus, the Empyrean Timekeeper

Classification: Ethereal/Ascendant

Portfolio: Time, Space, Renewal

Rank: Preeminent

Tempus Equus (her entry here) is the Alicorn goddess of Time, Space, and Renewal, and is the second-born of the Thirteen Empyreans.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Like all Alicorns, she possesses the combined powers of all mortal Pony tribes, though as one of the first Equids to be born, her racial powers includes those of all existing Equid races. Notably, she sometimes manifests powers of Pony/Equid tribes that don't exist yet.
  • Animalistic Abomination: Like her fellow Empyreans, she's a Hyracotherium/Eohippus Alicorn and thus has traits unique to the race she was born to, like toed hooves, a Zebra-like tail, and a spotted pelt. Due to being among the first sapient Equids to be born, she's a huge Alicorn goddess with ten wings with a wing gradient going from white to maroon and feathers made of Time energy. Her mane and tail shows events occurring throughout time, and looking into her eyes will grant images of the past. However, one trait specific to her is that she's constantly shifting between a filly, an adult mare, and an elderly mare in a repeating cycle, which befits her nature as a goddess of Time.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: She's an Alicorn goddess who embodies Time, Space, and Renewal.
  • The Anti-Nihilist: Despite being a goddess of Time and, therefore, having seen how certain choices can affect timelines, she acknowledges that every choice, no matter how small, are important because they decide the fates of entire timelines. And despite being tasked with ensuring that even deities are aware of their own mortality, she nonetheless values life and stresses the importance of making every bit of it count. She views those who choose to waste their life on vice and selfishness as immoral.
  • Cool Old Lady: She's noted to be like a "wise old grandmother" in terms of personality, often telling stories to those she meets, and is also generally well-spoken and polite. While she isn't 'old' in a conventional sense due to how divine aging works, she's still an incredibly ancient goddess, and one eldritch trait she has is that she constantly shifts between a filly, an adult mare, and an elderly mare before turning back into a filly and repeating the cycle. She also sympathizes with Stitching Time for attempting to restore the Second Age out of mad grief, as she herself felt tempted to use her own Time powers to restore the fallen Alicorn Civilization.
  • Ermine Cape Effect: She wears barding, and it's noted her preferred barding is cold with clockwork engravings and designs.
  • Expy: She's based on Vector Prime.
  • Fountain of Youth: As a goddess of Renewal, she can revert others to a younger age.
  • Gender Flip: She's female, whereas Vector Prime, whom she's based on, is male. Godzillawolf intended this as a Pragmatic Adaptation since all of the Thirteen Primes were male save for one, Solus Prime, the first female Cybertronian.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: A combined "Multicolored wings" and "Cluster wings" example. She has ten wings with a maroon gradient and feathers made of time; since deities in the Codexveres get Stronger with Age, these traits show how ancient and powerful she is.
  • Guilt Complex: She developed a huge guilt complex over her own mistakes, both real and perceived. Her obsession over trying to find out where the Aura colonization efforts went wrong enabled both the Alicorn Civilization's growing corruption, and the deterioration of her fellow Empyreans' bonds, leading to the death of Plasmatio Equus. Out of guilt, she vanished into the realm of time, never to be seen again, until Ourophion, the Time Primeval, found her and helped her come to terms with her guilt and grief. While she was relieved to learn from Princess Stitching Time that the Alicorns involved in the Aura colonization survived, she still felt guilty over what happened to a degree, believing she could have saved them.
  • Immortality Begins at Twenty: Subverted; while deities in the Codexverse are immortal, they get "older" by becoming Stronger with Age, which manifests in increased power and eldritch appearances. As a "Preeminent"-ranked Alicorn goddess, she is one of the most eldritch Alicorns alive, only second to her "father" and divine creator, King Equus, the first sapient Equine.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: Due to her nature as a goddess of Time, she has a unique trait where she constantly changes between a filly, an adult mare, an old mare, and back again in a continuous cycle.
  • Magic Hair: Her 'default' form has a maroon mane and tail made of temporal energy. In her true form, her mane and tail shows various events occurring throughout time.
  • The Magnificent: Known as "the Empyrean Timekeeper".
  • Meaningful Name: Tempus translates to "time" in Latin. Tempus Equus is an Empyrean Alicorn who embodies Time, Space, and Renewal, tasked with not only protecting time from those who try to meddle with it, but also reminding even fellow deities the importance of making their own time among the living count.
  • Mr. Fixit: As a goddess of Renewal, she possesses the ability to repair and heal things. This is extremely important, as her domain can fix the fabric of time and space when used in conjunction with her other powers.
  • Mystical White Hair: She's a white-furred Alicorn goddess, though she's specifically one of the Thirteen Empyreans, ancient Alicorns created by King Equus from the first sapient Equids, the Eohippus race. She's also a goddess of Time who, as part of her nature, constantly changes in a continuous cycle where she shifts between a filly, an adult mare, an old mare, and back again.
  • No Social Skills: Similarly to her younger "sister", Omnia Equus, this is one of her flaws. Her entry notes that she is reclusive and a bit lacking in social skills.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: A huge reason why she sympathized with Princess Stitching Time is because she saw herself in the latter, as Stitching Time's grief over losing the Second Age and desire to restore it was no different from her own desire to save all the Alicorns who were involved in the failed Aura colonization efforts. However, while she herself never gave in to her temptations, Stitching Time did and became Final Epoch.
  • Our Titans Are Different: Like her fellow Empyreans, she is a "Preeminent"-ranked Alicorn, putting her between 10 million and 100 million years old. Because deities in the Codexverse only grow "older" by getting Stronger with Age, this makes her extremely huge and powerful by divine standards, capable of beating even younger deities.
  • Perpetually Protean: As an ancient goddess of Time, one eldritch trait unique to her is that she's in a perpetually repeating cycle where she's constantly changing between a filly, an adult mare, and an old mare before changing back to a filly again.
  • Red Is Heroic: She has a maroon mane and tail, and she is a benevolent Alicorn goddess who believes that the only way to use one's time effectively is to live life to the fullest, not wasting it on selfishness, evil, or vice. During the Alicorn Civilization's heyday, one of her tasks as an Empyrean was to remind even other deities that We All Die Someday and serve as Time Police against those who try meddling with time and space for selfish and/or evil reasons. Even today, she still fulfills this as an agent of Ourophion, the Time Primeval, though she extends her activities to alternate timelines and potential futures.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Realizing that her obsession with the failed Aura colonization efforts enabled both the Alicorn Civilization's corruption and her fellow Empyreans' falling-out, she fled to the realm of time, unable to cope with the sheer guilt she felt. It's after being found by Ourophion and coming to terms with her feelings that she comes out of seclusion, helping the Time Primeval guard Equus' time and spatial fabrics against those who seek to meddle with or destroy them.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Deconstructed. When one of the Alicorn Civilization's attempted intergalactic colonization efforts failed, resulting in the loss of many Alicorns, she was devastated by it, and retreated so she could study time to see what went wrong. Unfortunately, she grew so obsessed with setting things right that she failed to notice both the Alicorn Civilization's growing corruption and the deterioration of her fellow Empyreans' relationships, leading to Plasmatio Equus' death. This factored into her huge Guilt Complex and she vanished into the realm of time. Fortunately, she was found by Ourophion, the Time Primeval, who helped her through her grief and recruited her as one of his agents. She breaks down crying tears of relief when she learns from Princess Stitching Time that the seemingly dead colonists survived and settled in the world of Aura, though it's noted she still felt guilty over it.
  • A Shared Suffering: She heavily sympathizes with Princess Stitching Time for her stint as Final Epoch and why she became that way, having been tempted at times to use her own Time domain to Set Right What Once Went Wrong in regards to the Alicorn Civilization's failed intergalactic colonization effort out of guilt.
  • Space Master: As a goddess of Space, she can manipulate the fabric of space itself, allowing her to bend and distort it for traveling purposes or to deflect or redirect attacks.
  • The Storyteller: Her behavior has been described In-Universe as a "wise old grandmother" who often tells stories to those she meets.
  • Super-Speed: As a goddess of Time, she can replicate superspeed by slowing down time itself. Being far older than fellow Time deities like Stitching Time, she is far more powerful in this regard.
  • Time Master: As a goddess of Time, she is capable of time manipulation, being capable of rewinding time (including her personal time), stopping time, seeing past events (though not change them) "skipping" or slowing time to give the appearance of Teleportation and Super-Speed, respectively, and induce Rapid Aging in others. However, it's noted she is far more powerful than the younger Princess Stitching Time, a fellow Time goddess and agent of Ourophion, due to deities getting Stronger with Age, and she is capable of traveling to alternate timelines and potential futures as well.
  • Time Police: As the Thirteen Empyreans' resident goddess of Time, part of her duties involved investingating time, as well as stopping both Alicorns and other divine/mortal civilizations from meddling with time and space for selfish and/or malicious ends. Following her discovery by Ourophion Ages later, she became one of his agents, guarding Equus's chronal and spatial fabrics from "unspeakable horrors from existences between time and space that gnaw on the very fabric of reality", and observing and reporting on alternate, neighboring timelines.
  • Time Stands Still: As a goddess of Time, she can freeze time and thus "freeze" her enemies. Being so old, she is far more powerful than Princess Stitching Time was in this regard, even while the latter was transformed into "Final Epoch".
  • We All Die Someday: As goddess of Time, she fully acknowledges that even immortal deities will die someday, which is why she stresses the importance of making good use of the time they have. During the Alicorn Civilization's heyday, her duty was to remind others, even her fellow Empyreans and their own Alicorn subjects, of this important fact so they would not waste their life on frivolous, immoral things.
  • Winged Unicorn: She's an ancient, ten-winged Hyracotherium/Eohippus Alicorn with a wing gradient going from white to maroon and feathers made of Time energy, a mane and tail made of temporal energy that shows events occurring throughout time, and eyes that grant images of the past when looked into. As a Eohippus, she has traits pertaining to her race like toed hooves, a Zebra-like tail, and a spotted pelt. She also has the unique trait of constantly shifting between a filly, an adult mare, and an elderly mare in a repeating cycle, which befits her nature as a goddess of Time.

    Alchimia Equus, the Empyrean Alchemist

Classification: Ascendant/[TBA]

Portfolio: [TBA]

Rank: Preeminent

  • Crossover Relatives: Queen Mzazi, aka Zigzag of the G1 Ponyfriends toyline, is his first-born daughter and first of the Zebras. In their respective canons, they weren't even related at all.
  • Expy: He's based on Alchemist Prime.
  • Shout-Out: The Snip featuring Alchimia ordering a Malregnarian Archdevil and a Meridian Archdemon to stop fighting in his true form is based on a scene in Transformers: Cyberverse where Maccadam intimidates Megatron and other Transformers into not fighting in his bar.

    Omnia Equus, the All-Knowing Empyrean

Classification: Ethereal/Ascendant

Portfolio: Fate, History, Scribes

Rank: Preeminent

Omnia Equus (her entry here) is the Alicorn goddess of Fate, History, and Scribes, and is the third-born of the Thirteen Empyreans.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: She's an Alicorn goddess who embodies Fate, History, and Scribes.
  • Expy: She's based on Alpha Trion.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: As a goddess of Scribes, her powers mostly consist of writing at super-fast speeds and conjuring numerous copies of herself, books, and writing tools. However, they are incredibly useful given the enormity of her task, which involves recording not only every single book in her library, but all of Equus' past, present, and future. Her domain also comes with the ability to trap others in books or "write" fate, the latter allowing her to perform feats of selective reality-warping.
  • Heroic Lineage: Clover Bloom, a Virtuous Seven heroine from the Second Age, is theorized to be her descendant. Downplayed, however, as due to being King Equus's third creation, it's easier to number the equines who aren't related to her.
  • Holy Halo: She has a large, multilayered halo that, like her mane and tail, displays various events that occurred throughout history.
  • I Know Your True Name: Her omniscience includes knowing this. She shows it by addressing Iniquitous by Her true name, and is likely the only person outside Iniquitous and family who knows it.
  • Large and in Charge: As the third-born Empyrean, she is one of the largest and most eldritch Alicorn deities on the planet after her older sisters Tempus Equus and Clara Equus, as well as her father, King Equus. Notably, she was Equinekind's first scribe and primary source of knowledge, being the one who taught her kind how to read and write.
  • Magic Hair: Being one of the oldest divine Equids in existence, she has a mane and tail that display various events that occurred throughout history.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name, Omnia, means "all" in Latin. Being a goddess of Fate, History, and Scribes means she can record the past, present, and future of anything she sees, especially since she's linked to the "Equus Memory". This made her suitable for recording the history of Equus itself, a task so massive that she had to create multiple copies of herself just to lessen the burden.
  • Mentor Archetype: It's been hinted by Queen Majesty that she was the one who taught Gypsy, who would go on to serve as Majesty's court Seer. However, even Majesty herself is uncertain whether this is true or not. As the All-Knowingg Empyrean, she served as a mentor to all of Equinekind, being their first scribe who taught them how to read and write, and was highly sought after for her prophecies and knowledge.
  • Me's a Crowd: As a goddess of Scribes, she can create numerous copies of herself, as well as quills and books for her copies to use. This is a pretty useful power to have, since she has the massive task of recording both everything in her library and all of Equus' history.
  • Nice Guy: She is known for being moral, desiring Ponykind to do good and is more than happy to aid them in attaining knowledge and reaching enlightenment and surprising her with their actions and deeds. She provided information to the writers of 'Codex Equus' in disguise and is very supportive of the project.
  • No-Sell: When Iniquitous came to visit Omnia's library for Her and/or Her counterparts' books, the Vicearch of Malregnar - despite being one of the most intelligent beings of Equus, likely one of the greatest practitioners of Dark Magic in existence, and having assimilated enough power, domains, knowledge and experience to surpass entire pantheons in might - was casually barred from entering Omnia's library with a barrier, with no amount of force or expertise She applied able to break or bypass it. Iniquitous was very impressed by her foresight and preparedness.
  • The Omniscient: Thanks to her ability to tap into what is called the 'Equus Memory', she is effectively omniscient to all events which had happened or is happening on Equus (hence her title). That being said, her awareness has limits, such as needing time to tap into said Equus Memory and access the information she desired. Iniquitous points out during a conversation that this makes her exceedingly dangerous, as she knows everyone's secrets, and them better than they know themselves. This includes others' thoughts.
  • Seers: As a goddess of Fate, she can predict the future, create prophecies, and bind others to certain fates, as well as "create" certain events to happen in the future. Her domain of History inverts this by giving her powerful retrocognition and the ability to travel back in time and witness past events as a specter. Notably, because she is linked to the "Equus Memory, she can witness anything that has happened on Equus in the past, present, and future, making her The Omniscient.
  • Supernatural Sealing: As a goddess of Scribes, she can trap people in books. This is how she defeated her Fallen son, Prime Grimoire — by sealing him away in his own book in order to protect everyone from his nihilistic ambitions.
  • These Are Things Man Was Not Meant to Know: While she was willing to impart knowledge and prophecies to those who asked for it, she withheld information that would be abused or shatter people's sanity, knowing that some knowledge should never be made public.
  • Time Travel: As a goddess of History, she can travel back in time, but in the sense of viewing past events as a specter. Her ink to the "Equus Memory" makes her powerful enough to view any past event she chooses, even beyond what deities are capable of at her age.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: As a goddess of Scribes, she can "write" her own predictions, allowing her to perform feats of selective reality-warping. This is regarded as her most terrifying ability as she can literally shape people's futures if she chose to. However, it does have weaknesses — it cannot affect people who either can Screw Destiny or wield similar fate-based powers, and she still has to write things out for her ability to work.

    Plasmatio Equus, the Empyrean Forger

Classification: Ascendant

Portfolio: Blacksmiths, Creation, Innovation

Rank: Preeminent

Stella Equus, the Empyrean Artisan/Midnight Majesty

Classification: Ascendant

Portfolio: Art, Gatekeepers, Stars

Rank: Preeminent

  • Alliterative Name: Her other name is this. Midnight Majesty.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: She's an Alicorn goddess who embodies Art, Gatekeepers, and Stars.
  • Archangel Uriel: She is the Codexverse's counterpart of Archangel Uriel, being the gatekeeper of the Sanctuary Realms populated by the ancient Alicorns. Her role is to defend her homes from outsiders and prevent banished Alicorns from coming back.
  • Cool Old Lady: While she's eternally youthful by virtue of being an Alicorn goddess, she's the doting grandmother of Celestia and Luna. From both her role as gatekeeper of the Sanctuary Realms and her past achievements (such as rumoured creator of the imposing and powerful but also majestic and beautiful Star Beasts like the Ursa Major/Minor), she's likely one of the more powerful Alicorn deities mentioned in the setting thus far.
  • Flaming Sword: As part of her duties as the gatekeeper of the Sanctuary Realms, she fights off intrusion and invasions by the likes of hostile outsiders and exiled Alicorns armed with a blazing sword writhed with 'stellar flames'.
  • Gate Guardian: She's the gatekeeper of the Sanctuary-Realms of the Alicorns, and has been for aeons.
  • Heroic Lineage: She's Celestia and Luna's grandmother.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: She's a doting grandmother and an artisan at heart, yet she's also an ancient, mighty and skilled guardian warrior who defended the Sanctuary-Realms of the Alicorns from invasion by hostile powers for aeons.
  • Star Power: One of her domains is Stars, and she has powers related to that domain. Notably, she's rumored to have created constellation-themed Star Beasts such as the Ursa Major.
  • Time Abyss: She's an Alicorn who is older than the likes of Golden Scepter, Mzazi, and Midday Messenger by several million years. It's eventually revealed that she's one of the Thirteen Empyreans, and thus one of the first sapient equines King Equus made period.
  • Warrior Poet: She is both an artist and a warrior between her domains and her role as the Alicorn Civilization's resident gatekeeper.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: She is the designated gatekeeper of the Sanctuary Realms of the Alicorn Civilization, preventing anyone or anything from entering without permission and threaten the still-recovering Alicorn people.

    Minima Equus, the Symbiotic Empyrean

Classification: Ethereal/Ascendant

Portfolio: Symbiosis, Energy, Little Things

Rank: Preeminent

Minima Equus (his entry here) is the Alicorn god of Symbiosis, Energy, and Little Things, and is the fifth-born of the Thirteen Empyreans.

Gigans Equus, the Empyrean of Change

Classification: Ascendant

Portfolio: Giants, Change, Cooperation

Rank: Preeminent

Gigans Equus (her entry here) is the Alicorn goddess of Giants, Change, and Cooperation, and is the seventh-born of the Thirteen Empyreans.
  • Big Eater: Being an ancient Giganticorn goddess, she shares many fellow Giants' traits such as a great gluttonous impulse, and shows little hesitation to eating those smaller than herself and the place they're living on. It's implied owing to her age and size, whereas many Giant deities can eat whole lands and pantheons, Gigans Equus is voracious enough to eat entire planets.
  • Big Fun: She is noted to be a 'Jolly Giant', and is noted to be quite friendly, cheerful, and bombastic in character.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: She likes a good scrap and have both the strength and size to tank damage and dish it out.
  • Despair Event Horizon: One theory about why she decided to split herself into five smaller goddesses was that she was so despondant at the Twilight of the Alicorns and what became of her family and divine/mortal children that she simply can't go on as herself. This was merely one theory, however.
  • Expy: She's based on Nexus Prime.
  • Gentle Giant: Gigans Equus is a Big Fun Nice Girl who wants her mortal Equid Giant children and other children of Equus to work together and change for the better. That being said, she's still a Giant deity and does not hesitate to stomp or eat those she found evil and wanting.
  • Heroic BSoD: Waking up after recovering from fighting Perniciem, she was distraught to find that her sister Plasmatio is dead, her family the Thirteen Empyreans had fractured, and without her guidance and influence the Alicorn Civilization, the greatest of their mortal children, had fallen into decadence and corruption which culminated in the 'Twilight of the Alicorns'. This may have led to her decision to split herself into five smaller Giant goddesses.
  • He's Back!: After spending ages as five smaller Giant goddesses, the Giant Wars in the Fourth Age compelled her constituent Pieces of God to come back together, all of them declaring cryptically, "We must be whole again!"
  • Hot Skitty-on-Wailord Action: Her sheer enormity, being the size of a mountain range, makes any romance with much, much more normal sized partners a dicey and difficult prospect. It's mentioned that the first time she slept with a normal-sized mortal she literally had to rip and utilise a whole peninsula from the sea to do the deed. Some of her children experienced similar problems if they don't (or even despite) using their Sizeshifter abilities to make up for the difference in scale.
  • King in the Mountain: She's not dead, rather divided herself into five lesser divines and could one day return if her components were to merge back into one. And the Giant Wars provide the cause for that to happen.
  • Large and in Charge: Originator of Equine Giantkinds and also likely the biggest Equine Giant in existence. It's noted that she's size of a mountain range, which using land examples of RL Earth as reference could vary from size of Sutter Buttes at the smallest to the Andes at the largest.
  • The Maker: While all the Empyreans helped sire mortal Equinekind, Gigans Equus is specifically the progenitor of all Equine giants, being the first one who directly created their type of giant.
  • Our Giants Are Bigger: She is the one who originated Equine Giantkinds. She’s also as big as a mountain range at her full size. note
  • Person of Mass Destruction: By her very nature as a Equid Giant deity the size of a mountain range.
  • Planet Eater: Implied to be capable of doing so. One of her Equid Giant deity daughters was depicted eating a whole inhabited Wretched Hive planet piece by piece after having rampaged, toyed, and had her way with it and its inhabitants while sizeshifted to planet-size. If she can do it, so could likely Gigan Equus.
  • Sizeshifter: Like many Giant and normal deities Gigans Equus can magically change her size to allow her to interact with her smaller peers and children. It's implied at her greatest she can reach planet size.
  • Super-Strength: By virtue of being the biggest Equid to ever exist.
  • Super-Toughness: Thanks to her sheer size and corresponding strength, she could tank damage which could likely have squashed even smaller gods. To note, she managed to survive fighting against Perniciem, the Great Dying, a continent-sized embodiment of mass extinction, even if it left her critically wounded and forced to hibernate for ages to heal.

    Obitus Equus, the Empyrean Reaper

Classification: Ethereal/Ascendant

Portfolio: Death, Beasts, Compassion

Rank: Preeminent

Obitus Equus (his entry here) is the Alicorn god of Death, Beasts, and Compassion, and is the eighth-born of the Thirteen Empyreans.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: He's an Alicorn god who embodies Death, Beasts, and Compassion.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a kind, compassionate, and reasonable being...but do not enrage him. He's a Prince of Reapers, and thus the direct subordinate of a Grand Primeval.
  • The Big Guy: Although Gigans Equus is physically the largest of the Thirteen Empyreans, he is the strongest of them all due to being a Death god, which automatically makes him very powerful compared to his 'siblings'.
  • Composite Character: According to one of his writers, Obitus is based on Death from Discworld in that he's one of the oldest and strongest beings in existence, is a compassionate person who is also The Anti-Nihilist, and has... a very odd perspective of life. Some of his character aspects are taken from Onyx Prime, who, despite his intimidating appearance, is the most spiritually-minded of the Thirteen Primes and also the friendliest. Onyx Prime is also called "The Lord of Beasts", which is referenced in Obitus' domain of Beasts.
  • Dem Bones: His alternative divine form is that of a skeletal Alicorn.
  • The Dreaded: As a Prince of Reapers, no one wants to get on his bad side. This is because he's a direct subordinate of Mortem, a Grand Primeval, and thus if he arrives in a bad mood, odds are he's acting on behalf of one of the single most powerful beings on the planet.
  • Divine Parentage: He's the biological father of the Three Deaths, Gavisus Manes, Audens Manes, and Malus Manes. This makes him the grandfather of the Trimortidae, whether by adoption or by blood.
  • God of the Dead: He's the oldest Equid deity of Death. He's classified as a Prince of Reapers, meaning a Death God working directly under Mortem, the Death Primeval and overseeing the deaths of an entire species or genus. In his case, he oversees the deaths of all equids. He also represents the deaths of equid gods and reaps their divine souls upon death.
  • Magic Hair: He has a mane and tail made of black smoke.
  • The Maker: He is the progenitor of all Equuid Death deities, which includes the Three Deaths and the Trimortidae.
  • Meaningful Name: Obitus translates to things like "downfall", "ruin", "destruction", and/or "death" in Latin. It also translates to "the act of going towards ___" in the same language, which refers to how everything and everyone dies eventually.
  • Top God: As a 'Prince of Reapers', while still subordinate to Mortem, he's this for all the Equid Death Deities.

Profectus Equus, the Empyrean Professor/Iridium Signet

  • Adaptational Heroism: Quintus Prime's actions in establishing a 'farm' to create robotic beasts was one of many factors that led to the accidental death of his fellow Thirteen, Solus Prime, at the hands of an enraged Megatronus. When it happened, he chose to shift blame on his co-conspirators and disappear to create his own race, with his ultimate fate being implied to have been death at the hands of his own creations. Here, while he did similarly horrible things, he realized what he did and left Equus to nurture the growth of sapientkind on another planet in atonement.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Quintus Prime refused to own up to his mistakes when they contributed to the death of a fellow Thirteen, Solus Prime, and left to create his own race, which led to him being killed by his own creations. Here, he realized the error of his ways and made efforts to atone for his actions by nurturing life on another planet.
  • Crossover Relatives: He is the biological father of a few Alicorns like Emperor Golden Scepter and Queen Hylia, who are based on the Emperor of Mankind and the goddess Hylia, respectively. In their respective canons, they're completely unrelated.
  • Divine Parentage: As one of the first Alicorns to emerge after King Equus, he has had a lot of children over the course of history. A Codexverse drabble reveals that he's the biological father of Emperor Golden Scepter, and later entries would reveal that Golden Scepter's fraternal triplet brothers, Diamond Mantle and Platinum Crown, are also his sons. This also means that Queen Hylia is his daughter, with her reincarnation(s), Radiant Primrose, being technically his granddaughter(s).
  • Expy: He's based on Quintus Prime, a talented scientist and one of the Thirteen.
  • Immortality Seeker: Not necessarily for himself, being a god and thus immortal by default, but for everyone/thing else in general, as he desired for life to endure and prosper no matter the costs. This led him to join forces with the Fallen Empyrean in the latter's infamous project, committing a lot of atrocities in their immoral experiments to achieve it before having a epiphany about his actions and coming to regret them. While unconfirmed in-universe, he is speculated to be responsible for the "Perpetuity" mutation, as three of his sons Diamond Mantle, Golden Scepter and Platinum Crown are Perpetuals, the implication being that they got it from their father experimenting on them and making all of them virtually nigh-unkillable.

    Astus, the Lying Empyrean

Astus, the Lying Empyrean/Cultural Empyrean/Empyrean Storyteller

Classification: Ascendant

Portfolio: Stories(?), Culture(?), Deception, Trickery(?)

Rank: Preeminent

  • Above Good and Evil: Or rather, "define Good and Evil". Many accused him for being evil, and he has played an evil god, but ultimately he's more morally ambiguous, and he thinks such definitions are extremely limiting in describing him and what he does.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Being the (supposed) first philosopher of Equidkind and a master of the Breaking Lecture, Astus is capable of asking a lot of these.
    • Astus at one point looked upon both Iniquitous' and Fairytale's respective philosophies of Evil and Good (and their respective goals to render their counterparts obsolete by replacing them with something else), and then confronting them with inquiries over the applicability of their definitions of good and evil and with it the legitimacy of their goals. Neither of them have a satisfactory answer to those questions as of yet.
Astus Equus: Your Unhallowed Majesty, I have a question to pose to You.
Vicearch Iniquitous: Yes, O King of Lies?
Astus Equus: You claim that you intend to replace Good and Virtue with something better... but how will You know that you truly have?
    Vicearch Iniquitous: ...Explain your reasoning.
Astus Equus: What are Good and Evil? Who defines Good and Evil? Is Your definition of Good and Evil the one definitive definition of it? For example, is not Your sheer determination and drive to achieve your goals considered a VIRTUE? Thus as young Moon-Ray has pointed out from a certain point of view, Your counterpart's desire to render evil obsolete could be considered a sin in and of itself due to those it would harm. Is not Your son's capacity to restrain his pride a form of humility? Has not the Cross of Fire decreed Temnobog's evil a form of objective good? So the question becomes: how can one render Good or Evil obsolete and the world rid of them, if one can never truly define what Good and Evil are? Because is not Your good another's evil and another's evil your good? Are there not many choices or actions that are only sinful or virtuous based on their context and not on any inherit quality? If you claim to do these things in the objective sense... then you are forgoing sapient nature and appealing to a more 'natural' form of it. And at that point, can it really be called good or evil to begin with? Or at least a version of it that sapient beings are capable of truly changing?
    • He gives a milder one at the end of a lecture he delivered in one of his many, many mortal guises. Notably, Bright Eyes, the then-future Scholar of Justice, was in attendance, and it threw her beliefs in justice and law for a loop (although she would come up with one of the best answers in the subsequent class).
  • Breaking Lecture: In addition to being a Consummate Liar who can hide or distort the truth, the Lying Empyrean is also known as a master in questioning what others hold to be 'true', challenging principles and deconstructing the very presumptions underlying peoples' beliefs, often using the flaws in their ideals to undermine them or the very tents they believe in against them. Astus is so good at it that where most would fight, he could destroy their very reason and will to fight before it even begins.
Astus Equus: It is one thing to challenge another's skills, knowledge, power and will. But it is another thing to challenge another's beliefs, ideals, principles and 'truth'. More often then not, a warrior could win a thousand battles without a single loss, only to falter in defeat when he finds the very cause he fought for dragged through the mud and revealed for the flawed, ugly and ignoble thing it is...

Nowhere is a being at their weakest in what they believe to be 'true', and you would often discover yourself or others for who and what they really are, when their 'truths' are challenged, even castrated.
  • Birds of a Feather: With FlÅ“rð, the Maker of Mischief, given both are trickster gods who are masterful liars, each a Charm Person (who also happens to Really Gets Around), and are occasionally pranksters and trolls. Heck, they look like each other enough superficially FlÅ“rð's first question upon meeting him the first time is to ask if they know each other.
  • Break Them by Talking: Tying to Breaking Lecture above, he has defeated or rattled his opponents or subjects simply by making them question and doubt everything they are and believed, either by deceiving them with words or revealing their own folly.
    • Legends has it when confronted by a reality-warping evil being which cannot be properly fought due to their powers, Astus defeated them by deceiving and questioning their nature so thoroughly that he made them believe they shouldn't even exist — and promptly warp themselves out of existence.
    • Reportedly, Astus' doubting of Morning Star, the Light of Perfection's very belief in his own perfection contributed to his Fall, but also partly responsible for Morning Star's own eventual self-destruction via tearing himself apart to make himself 'perfect' and in doing so weakening Morning Star enough to be defeated and ultimately destroyed.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Astus Equus can act like a prankster and a Troll at times, but if he gets serious he can quite literally talk you to death and make you question everything you hear or believe in. And that's before we get to the fact that he's an Equine god tens of millions of years old and is as powerful and experienced as one such divine could be expected to be.
  • Charm Person: Implied, if Auctor, the Masterful Playwright's introductory drabble is any indication, as Astus is implied to have many sons and daughters. Justified in that Astus is incredibly persuasive given his portfolio.
  • The Chessmaster: If his backing of the secret cabal/bloc/faction/alliance of dark deities and their forces which Blackthorn and Temnobog had formed and his conversation with his nephew Emperor Golden Scepter are any indication, he's up to something - a LOT of 'somethings'.
  • Consummate Liar: He's not called the Lying Empyrean for nothing. He literally invented lying as far as Equids are concerned and is so good at it, even Blackthorn's cabal (which consists of him, Iniquitous, Temnobog, Lord Dracolta, Andhera Mahaaraanee and many other powerful dark gods well versed in deceit) haven't been able to figure out what his true intentions for being their benefactor are. Regardless, do not ever expect a straight answer from him.
  • Enlightened Antagonist: If Clara Equus' own speculations are accurate, Astus often does/plays evil, villainous and antagonist things/roles out of a philosophical belief that Good Needs Evil and that Good could only be defined and made relevant (and by implication vice-versa) when being challenged by Evil in equal force, and if no one else is around to play the role of the villain then he might as well step up to it. That, and as per his deceitful and philosophical nature he challenges and questions what constitutes as 'Good' or 'Evil' and who is truly one or the other within context, meaning he may not even think that he's being evil, villainous or antagonistic, or thinks he and what he does is beyond such limiting definitions.
  • Expy: Tying with the Empyreans' main inspiration being the Thirteen Primes of Cybertron, he is based on Liege Maximo in characterization, although he also draws significant inspiration from Loki of Marvel Comics and other Enlightened Antagonist villains and anti-villains.
  • Did You Just Romance Cthulhu?: Downplayed given they are both gods, but he was apparently the 'Cthulhu' of the side of his relationship he implied to have had with Queen Olympia, being her 'partner' on top of being one of her patrons.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Astus became the benefactor of the secret cabal/bloc/faction/alliance of dark deities and their forces which Blackthorn and Temnobog had formed for reasons which remain undetermined, mirroring Clara Equus' own decision to become benefactor to the cabal/bloc/faction/alliance which Rosedust, Belyolen and other good gods would separately form.
  • God of Evil: He has played the role of a divine evil, villainous and antagonistic force, or a patron/backer of evil, villainous and antagonistic forces such as Blackthorn and Temnobog's alliance of evil for his own agendas and/or out of a philosophical belief that Good Needs Evil and Good could only be defined and be made relevant by being counterbalanced and challenged by an equal force Evil. Though he as per his nature questioned and challenged the very definition of 'Good' and 'Evil' and who truly play which role in such conflicts, if such things (or his actions for that matter) could be defined at all within the relevant contexts.
  • Hard on Soft Science: Defied. Astus noted to Amicitia that those who neglected social sciences often end up rueling it, since they are the only people who, rather than focusing on 'Can we do it?', actually askes whether 'Should we do it?', and those who didn't like the Alicorn Ascendency and the Alicorn Civilization are quick to descend into atrocity and transgression since they never took a hard, introspective look on whether they were on the right path or doing the right thing, having just took the righteousness of their course or actions for granted.
  • Identical Stranger: Lampshaded — on account of their inspirations (Liege Maximo and Marvel's Loki, among others) both looking like horn-helmed green-armoured beings, the first question FlÅ“rð asks when meeting Astus for the first time is asking if they know each other. Astus responded by telling FlÅ“rð they do because FlÅ“rð is his brother whom Astus shapeshifted into a Jotunn buck for Kaldr to find so to hide him from their enemies... then laughing when FlÅ“rð quickly calls him out on his lie, before remarking that they will learn much from each other.
  • The Magnificent: Astus Equus is called 'The Lying Empyrean', on account of being the first Equid to ever lie and likely the ultimate deceiver and trickster among Equuskind. He may also had been called the Cultural Empyrean or the Empyrean Storyteller, on account of being the first Equid to tell a story and also responsible for inspiring and moulding society, cultures and beliefs of the myriad Equid races and civilizations through constructing, propagating and manipulating the narratives of countless stories, legends and ideas he and/or other Equids made.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Being a Consummate Liar (to the point of having invented lying at least where Equuskind had concerned), he is this by default. And if his own words are accurate, he had been doing this with all of Equuskind by constructing, propagating, and/or manipulating the narratives of uncounted stories, legends and ideals he and other Equids created, which led to the molding society, culture and beliefs of the many Equid races and civilizations on behalf of his father, King Equus.
  • Non-Human Non-Binary: Astus implies he may be 'Non-Binary' in terms of gender orientation, given as his siblings observed he shows little to no discomfort in shifting to a female form. This remains unconfirmed speculation in-universe, however, and he still uses primarily a male pronoun, putting him in a similar situation to FlÅ“rð, who similarly finds no problems shifting genders and even getting in relationships in different genders, but is not yet truly confirmed to be non-binary.
  • Not Hyperbole: Astus boasts that, as far as Equids are concerned, he invented lying. He's not joking: he is literally the first Equid to have ever lied.
  • The Philosopher: Astus Equus, being (potentially, if his claims are true) responsible for inspiring social, cultural and ideological development among the Equid races and civilization, seemed to be this by default, since he considers himself a storyteller and liar who works with narratives, and philosophy is all about constructing 'narrative frameworks' to understand the metaphysical nature of all things. His whole schtick as the Lying Empyrean may be partly due to being his nature to question and challenge all established 'truths' and 'narratives', perhaps coming to the conclusion at some point that everything observed, spoken and believed in are subjective to interpretation.
    • Best exemplified in a meeting between Astus and Blackthorn with Applejack/Veritas: Rather than lie and challenge Applejack/Veritas to spot it, he throws a curveball by asking Applejack/Veritas what is 'honesty' by her definition, then not only question her interpretation of it with a story, but afterwards fundamentally challenging the very concept of 'Truth' and 'Honesty' from that established foundation. He managed to skewer them so thoroughly by deconstructing Applejack/Veritas's presumption and adding his observations that Applejack/Veritas is left completely shakened by the end of the meeting, as if wondering if there is really is something is truth/honesty or if everything is merely just a 'different side of a story'.
    • His response to any accusation of being evil, villainous and antagonistic is to challenge the accuser to define what is Good or Evil, and his follow-up questions asks whether or not he should be Evil or even be considered Evil in those context.
  • Really Gets Around: His son Auctor, the Masterful Playwright's introductory drabble notes that Auctor is merely one of many sons and daughters he has, which implies this. For example, he and Queen Olympia were 'partners' at one point, besides being one of her patrons, which he claims is how he knew about her so much.
  • The Storyteller: Astus claims that in addition to being the first Equid to lie, he was the first to ever tell a story, and has implied that he helped to mould society, culture and beliefs of the many races and civilizations of Equuskind through constructing, propagating and manipulating the narratives of the uncounted stories, legends, and ideologies which he and Equids creates. Given who he is, however, even he admits that everything he claims should be automatically suspected.
Astus Equus: A lie is essentially a fib. A narrative divorced from reality to convey a different or unique point of view. A lie is essentially a story, whatever its purpose may be. Stories can have profound meanings. Stories can teach many things. Stories can reflect and propagate beliefs. And when retold often and long enough, stories can form the basis of entire ways of life and ideals in which whole civilizations can revolve.
  • Trickster God: Being a masterful storyteller and Consummate Liar, his status as the Lying Empyrean lends itself to this.
  • Troll: Astus, being who he is, has his moments.
  • Ãœbermensch: While his motives and behavior are always suspect, it can be determined that Astus lives by his own rules and principles, sees himself and his actions as Above Good and Evil, and defines himself openly questioning and challenging both concepts and just about every established truths, rules, beliefs and ideals in existence.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Firmly believes only by being forced to confront or confronting others at their weakest i.e. what they hold as their 'truth', and being challenged and questioned or challenging and questioning them down to their foundation would people find out what they truly are, and either rise above it or be destroyed by it.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As with many gods of deceit and manipulation, Astus is an adept shapeshifter, and could change species and gender when and where necessary for his deceptions and manipulations without issues or discomfort.

    [REDACTED], the Fallen Empyrean

Classification: [WIP]/Ascendant

Portfolio: [WIP]

Rank: Preeminent

  • Breaking the Fellowship: His actions with that of Profectus and Astus, as well as Clara's Knight Templar response to their actions, contributed to not only Plasmatio's death, but also Gigans' willing self-division, the splintering of the Thirteen Empyreans as a family, and disappearance (until the present day) of the Thirteen Empyreans group as a whole.
  • Composite Character: Of Megatronus Prime, also known as Megatronus, aka 'the Fallen', from Transformers: Prime. And also Davoth, the true Dark Lord of Demonkind from Doom Eternal.
  • The Dreaded: As a member of the Thirteen Empyreans, he was one of the very first Equids to ever exist... making him not only the first God of Evil of the Equids but also the very first evil Equid PERIOD.
  • Enemies with Death: Inverted - he makes an enemy out of Obitus Equus because going by his inspirations, he couldn't stand the idea of his beloved Equid creations dying and their civilization coming to an end however great they rose, so he blamed Obitus Equus, the Death of Equids for it and sought to destroy his fellow Empyrean as part of his insane plan to conquer death itself.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Implied to have one of this when he tried to kill his 'brother' Obitus Equus in his attempt to get rid of death, only to accidentally kill his 'sister', Plasmatio, instead.
  • Start of Darkness: Going by his inspirations, his ambition to conquer death so his favoured Equid races/creations could live forever led him to go increasingly unfettered and immoral lengths to achieve that end. His obsession culminated in his attempt to kill Obitus Equus, which tragically caused Plasmatio's death when he accidentally killed her instead.

Mana Equus, the Empyrean Magician

Classification: Ethereal/Ascendant, Dead/Reincarnated

Portfolio: Magic, Friendship, Mana

Rank: Preeminent

Affiliation: Thirteen Empyreans, Equestrian Pantheon (main)

"Any-creature can use magic, but when shared with friends, that magic becomes even stronger."

Mana Equus (her entry here) is the Alicorn goddess of Magic, Friendship, and Mana, and is the thirteenth and youngest Empyrean to be born.
  • Abstract Apotheosis: Under the tutelage of Tuzu, the Magic Primeval and their various children, Mana Equus Ascended as the Alicorn goddess of Magic, Friendship, and Mana. According to her, learning how King Equus created all thirteen Empyreans out of desire for companionship factored hugely into her Ascension.
  • Adaptation Species Change: The Thirteenth Prime is a Cybertronian (i.e. a sapient robot that is also a Transforming Mecha) and Mystra is a goddess of Magic who sometimes appears as a human woman with eldritch traits. Mana Equus, who is a Composite Character of both, was born a mortal Eohippus and later Ascended to godhood as an Alicorn.
  • Animalistic Abomination: Due to being born at the dawn of Equinekind (which makes her 10 million to 100 million years old), Mana Equus is one of the most eldritch Alicorn deities after her creator, King Equus. In Mana's case, she has a mane and tail composed of Magic energy, a magical wing gradient going from heather-purple to dark blue, ten wings with feathers made of Friendship energy, and a magnificent, multilayered halo of Mana energy. Her mane and tail show images of every single friend creatures have made since the dawn of time itself. She also has traits like toed hooves, body stripes, and a Zebra-like tail due to being an Eohippus, the first racial ancestors of modern Equinekind. Mana's reincarnations/successors become this themselves to a degree, as reincarnating as her means they take on some of her traits.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: As a young filly, Mana Equus had quite the adventurous streak and frequently wandered off to satisfy her own curiosity. When she gained the ability to use magic, she used it to pull pranks on her older siblings. She matured quite a lot by the time she Ascended, though she still remains playful to a degree.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: She's an Alicorn goddess who embodies Magic, Friendship, and Mana.
  • The Archmage: Mana Equus is widely considered the greatest spellcaster in Equinekind's history, and for good reason. As Equinekind's first goddess of Magic, she possesses a vast, eidetic memory regarding all branches of magic, and can combine them in complex ways that go beyond what they're normally capable of. She has personally created various spells, artifacts, and weapons that she and others had used over the Ages. Furthering her arcane prowess are her domains of Friendship and Mana, which empower her spells when she's with friends and gives her control over Equus' primal energies. It's believed that had she survived, she could have easily defeated even other famous divine spellcasters like Vicearch Iniquitous, Archwizard Manamagus, Overlord Vondur, and Lady Thauma.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Mana Equus' Cutie Mark depicts a white cresent moon and a six-pointed magenta star. The moon is associated with mystery and femininity, while the magenta star symbolizes Mana's talent in magic. Notably, certain magically talented Ponies possess the same star as their Cutie Mark to denote their magical talents, like Starlight Glimmer, Twilight Sparkle, and Shining Armor.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Mana Equus is the last Empyrean to be born and thus is the youngest of the Thirteen Empyreans. Her family doted on her for being such an adorable baby, and even after growing up and Ascending to godhood, she served as The Heart keeping her family together. Unfortunately, it's later played for tragedy as Mana's age, idealism, and compassion led to her being taken completely for granted until it was far too late to fix things.
  • Badass Teacher: Mana Equus taught countless students when she was alive, and is presently mentoring her various Reincarnations like Twilight Sparkle, the Heartstrings twins, Shining Armor, and Glory. She was also Equinekind's first goddess of Magic and the greatest Archmage to have ever lived, with everything she had transferred onto her reincarnations. It's believed she would have easily defeated even modern-day spellcasters like Vicearch Iniquitous, Overlord Vondur, and Lady Thauma if she survived.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: As a goddess of Magic and Mana, Mana Equus can strip and even drain them of their magic reserves, the latter being associated with Lord Tirek. However, being a kind, benevolent goddess, she normally reserves such abilities for evil spellcasters. Being Equinekind's first goddess of magic, she also created "evil" branches of magic like dark magic, and accepts the use of them if they're used constructively and responsibly.
  • Being Good Sucks: Despite witnessing and experiencing various tragedies — among them, being taken for granted by corrupt family members and losing a sister to a brutal family brawl — she kept trying to cling to her values, merely abandoning her surviving siblings and people to teach friendship to the rest of the world when they refused to listen to her. Sadly, she herself died shortly after she left, with the details being lost to time. The trauma from those events affected her to the point where she felt reluctant to forgive her siblings for countless Ages, having been deeply hurt by their actions and their role in Plasmatio Equus' death. It's not until the Fourth Age, when she reincarnated as several people, that she finally forgives her surviving siblings, who reemerged in the public eye and apologized to her for their mistaes.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Mana Equus is heavily associated with blue and is a compassionate goddess who is both the first and greatest Archmage to have ever lived. While her deeds in life were numerous, she is most remembered for pulling a Heroic Sacrifice to save the world from certain doom. She was also responsible for giving all of Equinekind the ability to use magic, shaping that species' history. Many of her present-day Reincarnations are associated with blue, with one of them being named Blue Suede Heartstrings.
  • Cheerful Child: As a baby, Mana Equus was rather adorable and cheerful, and felt happiest when among family.
  • Composite Character: While Mana Equus is based on the fabled Thirteenth Prime, parts of her character were inspired by Mystra. Like the Thirteenth Prime, Mana Equus was a character shrouded in mystery, with not much information about her being available even In-Universe due to the passage of time. Like Mystra, she was originally a mortal being who later became the living embodiment of Magic itself, guiding people in the art of spellcraft while protecting the Weave from those who sought to abuse it for malicious ends. And like both characters, Mana herself would reincarnate into a different person after she died... or rather, different people, as many Ascendant spellcasters like Twilight Sparkle, Blue Suede Heartstrings, Bossa Nova Heartstrings, Glory, and Shining Armor end up reincarnating as her and becoming her hosts. One legend regarding her mysterious death is also based on how Mystra's predecessor, Mystryl, died — by sacrificing herself to save the Weave after a mortal Archwizard arrogantly tried stealing her divinity to become a god of Magic.
  • Cool Crown: She is sometimes depicted by legends as wearing a crown made of stars.
  • Cool Teacher: She is a wise, ancient, yet motherly teacher who encourages her students to continue learning and not feel ashamed of it, and has an Endearingly Dorky side that comes out when making new discoveries. She also accepts the teaching and learning of all branches of magic, including dark magic, as long as said branches are used responsibly and constructively. However, nothing delights her more than people learning about The Power of Friendship. This is best shown with her interactions with Twilight — she gives Twilight informative lectures on the history of Equinekind, and encourages her to figure out the answers herself rather than coddle her. When Twilight correctly answers that she reincarnated as her by saying "friendship is magic", she becomes so giddy that she jumps around excitedly, saying a Rapid-Fire "Yes!".
  • Cosmic Motifs: She is heavily associated with stars, with part of her Cutie Mark being a six-pointed magenta star, and her outfits having starry elements; legends sometimes depicted her wearing a crown made of stars. Among other things, stars represent guidance, renewal, hope, and positivity; she is Equinekind's first goddess of Magic and their first teacher in magic, having helped the Equines develop as a race since the dawn of the existence. Without her, Equinekind essentially floundered as they tried teaching themselves how to use magic. Even long after her death, her presence can still be felt as certain, magically powerful Ponies bear her starry Cutie Mark, and the act of reincarnating as her serves as a sort of rebirth as those who do so have their identities and/or divine portfolios altered to show that they are now part of her. Indeed, some of her reincarnations have stary-related Cutie Marks like Twilight Sparkle, Glory, and Shining Armor, while Blue Suede and Bossa Nova's guitar Cutie Marks changed to more resemble hers.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Due to being a powerful, experienced, and ancient goddess, she is capable of doing this on multiple occasions.
    • She easily overpowered Starfall Dusk, who was empowered by the Elements of Harmony and the bound souls of the friends she betrayed and tortured, by manifesting herself through Twilight/Amicitia as a Super Mode.
    • It's believed In-Universe that she could have easily won against the likes of Vicearch Iniquitous, Archwizard Manamagus, Overlord Vondur, and Lady Thauma — all who are divine arcane prodigies themselves — had she lived up to the present Age.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her bonds with her siblings and fellow Empyreans deteriorated as they became increasingly corrupt and complacent, taking her for granted to the point of expecting her to clean up after their messes. Unfortunately, her attempts to make them see the error of their ways were roundly ignored, partially due to her being The Baby of the Bunch. This culminated in one of her sisters, Plasmatio Equus, being killed in an ugly family brawl, and she angrily chews them out for sinking so low as to murder one of their own. When the surviving Empyreans went their separate ways, she left to try teach the importance of magic and friendship to others, seeing as her own kind and family wouldn't listen to her. Unfortunately, she died performing a Heroic Sacrifice (details unknown and contradictory), depriving Equinekind of their first teacher in magic. Because of how horribly the other Empyreans treated her and Plasmatio, she refused to forgive them for countless Ages until they reemerged in the public eye and apologized to her. It's also implied that she bore some trauma over her own death, and that until Twilight Sparkle came along, no one managed to realize The Power of Friendship and cross the threshold to reach her soul.
  • Deity of Human Origin: She was originally a mortal Eohippus who later Ascended as the Alicorn goddess of Magic, Friendship, and Mana after spending many years learning under the Magic Primeval, Tuzu, and their many children.
  • De-power: As a goddess of Magic, she can strip someone of their ability to use magic. But as a goddess of Mana, she can go further by outright drain people of their mana reserves, completely rendering her targets powerless. Given her benevolence, she generally restricts herself to wicked spellcasters who committed crimes vile enough to deserve being rendered powerless.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": She's a goddess of Mana named... Mana Equus. She also created in her youth a sentiant pumpkin Familiar that she named Pumpkin.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Deconstructed. While she loved her family, she grew increasingly discontent with how her siblings and fellow Empyreans constantly took her for granted and expected her to clean up after them, all while ignoring their own corruption. This comes to a head when the Empyreans get into an all-out brawl when three of them are caught doing illegal activities, leading to Plasmatio being killed when she tried intervening. Furious, she chews out her surviving siblings for letting themselves fall as far as to murder one of their own, and when the Empyreans eventually separated as a family out of guilt, she went her own way to teach the lessons of friendship to others that her own family ignored. This in turn leads to her own death, and for a long time, she felt reluctant to forgive her siblings because of how they treated her and Plasmatio. She does forgive them genuinely when the surviving Empyreans returned from seclusion and apologized to her for their behavior.
  • The Empath: As a goddess of Friendship, she possesses empathic powers to sense and ease people's loneliness. This allows her to counter spells fueled by negative emotions like apathy or hatred.
  • Endearingly Dorky: While an experienced teacher and spellcaster, she can be rather dorky when making new discoveries in general, a trait she shares with Twilight Sparkle/Amicitia, one of her eventual successors and Reincarnations. This can be surprising for those who expected her to be as regal as a goddess of her age, title, and power should be.
Princess Amicitia Sparkle Equestria: When I first learned of Mana Equus' existence, I imagined her to be like my ex-mentor Celestia - a serene, experienced, and all-powerful goddess who could command the winds of magic as easily as breathing. I was quite surprised when I saw that she was actually just like me - the 'first Equid dork', as she called herself.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Prior to her debut, entries mentioning her implied that she was a wise, ancient goddess who served as the "glue" keeping the Thirteen Empyreans together. When she's finally introduced in a Tales of Equestria story, she is revealed to be a wise yet motherly teacher with a surprisingly dorky side that comes out when Twilight Sparkle answers her questions correctly. This pegs her as someone who staunchly believes in The Power of Friendship and wants to teach magic to others... and ultimately is not much different from Twilight herself despite the sheer age and power gap between them.
  • Familiar: Her first and oldest familiar was a sentient pumpkin named Pumpkin, whom she magically created by complete accident. Despite this, Pumpkin behaved like a friendly dog and became a welcome addition to the family.
  • Forgiveness: This is defied at first, as she doesn't forgive her surviving siblings for a long time because of how they constantly expected her to fix their problems for them, and contributed to Plasmatio's accidental death by letting themselves fall into corruption until they forgot about their family ties. However, she eventually does forgive their siblings when they reemerged in the present and apologized for how they treated her in the past, having realized that their actions caused the deaths of not only one, but two of their number.
  • From Zero to Hero: She went from a mortal yet sapient Eohippus filly who lacked the ability to wield magic, to one of the most powerful mages in history as well as Equinekind's first goddess of Magic.
  • Gender Flip: While not a straight Expy, she is still based on the Thirteenth Prime, though reimagined as an Alicorn goddess.
  • Gender-Restricted Ability: Averted. Despite being Equinekind's first goddess of Magic, her views on it are rather egalitarian, believing that all creatures should be allowed to wield magic regardless of their gender or sex, unless they prove otherwise. Not only did her father and older brothers wield magic themselves, but she also helped give both male and female Equines the ability to use magic at the dawn of their creation. Naturally, she is enraged by sexism in magic, such as people trying to prevent others from learning magic based on their gender, or interpreting her as a misandrist goddess who lets females learn magic but forbids males from doing the same. She was also deeply unhappy with those who treated her male Reincarnations as inferior compared to Twilight because she saw all of them as part of her, even if they weren't the one(s) to reincarnate as her first.
  • Give a Man a Fish...: Being Equidkind's first and primary teacher in magic, she encouraged her students to keep on learning even when it seemed like there was nothing to learn, but didn't hold their hooves all the way. Instead, she gave them as much wisdom, knowledge, and power as deemed necessary to resolve matters on their own, much like what her teacher, Tuzu, did with her.
  • God Is Dead: She died sometime after the Alicorn Civilization's destruction and the separation of the Thirteen Empyreans as a family; while the exact details were lost to time, common consensus is that she most likely died pulling off a Heroic Sacrifice to save the universe and/or her people. However, she is technically still alive as every single Equine possesses a piece of her divine essence, with the potential to reincarnate as her if they made the right choices. Twilight Sparkle, Blue Suede, Nossa Nova, and Shining Armor are just a few examples.
  • Good Is Not Soft: While a friendly, compassionate mare who loves learning, she is also Equinekind's first goddess of Magic and therefore her kind's first Archmage, making her extremely ancient and powerful. Part of her divine duties in life involved protecting magic itself from those who misused it for evil, and she treats any form of discrimination in magic with great contempt — especially sexism, considering the misunderstandings surrounding her and how males were often mistreated because of it. Many believe that had she survived, she would have trounced even the likes of Vicearch Iniquitous and Overlord Vondur in a magical duel as a testament ot her magical strength.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: A combined "Cluster wings" and "Multicolored wings" example. She is a ten-winged Alicorn goddess, which, due to how deities age, pegs her as one of the oldest divine Equines in history after her father and creator, King Equus. She also has a magical dark blue wing gradient tapering into Friendship energy, which is another sign of her age and eldritchness compared to younger, modern Alicorns.
  • Green Thumb: It's implied that this is how she created her first familiar, Pumpkin, but being so young, she didn't know it at the time.
  • The Heart: When she was alive, her domain of Friendship, combined with her charisma and kind personality, made her a skilled mediator who could reconcile even the most incorrigible indiviuals. She brought together not only bickering nations, but also kept her family together by helping smooth over their differences. Sadly, this trait gradually becomes deconstructed — as both the Empyreans and the Alicorn Civilization grew increasingly corrupt, it grew increasingly harder for her to make everyone listen to her, which is not helped by her family constantly expecting her to fix everything for them whenever they screwed up. This culminates in a family brawl that kills Plasmatio, and after learning of this, she chews out her surviving family for letting themselves fall as far as to let one of their own die for their pettiness. A huge reason why it took so long for her to forgive her siblings is because of how they constantly took her for granted and ignored their own corruption, which ended up killing one of her beloved sisters.
  • Heavenly Blue: She is heavily associated with blue, such as her two-tone dark and light blue mane and tail, her dark blue wing gradient, her blue body stripes, and her blue topaz barding. She is also Equinekind's first goddess of Magic as well as their first and greatest mage, as she was the one who gave them the ability to wield magic in the first place. Some of her present-day reincarnations are also associated with blue, such as Twilight Sparkle, Blue Suede Heartstrings, and Shining Armor, to show their connection to her.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In-Universe, many believed that this is the cause of her death. The details in how it happened, however, varies with each legend and myth.
    • One legend spoke of how a mortal Archwizard tried to steal Mana's divinity to become a god of Magic, hoping his Ascension would unite his fracturing empire. Apparently, his attempt damaged the Weave to such an extent that Mana was forced to sacrifice herself to preserve it, therefore saving all magic.
    • Another legend spoke of how one of Mana's oldest children went mad and tried devouring all magic to achieve supreme power, which would have entailed destroying all life on a universal scale. In order to prevent this, Mana gave her life so her Fallen child can be sealed away.
    • Yet another legend spoke of how she simply gave up both her power and existence upon foreseeing a great crisis in the distant future that could only be resolved by another of similar magical talent and skill like her. This has some merit, as many of her divine hosts reincarnated as her after realizing certain epiphanies and/or performing great deeds during a great crisis.
  • Hive Mind: Her current status post-reincarnation is best described as this. While Twilight/Amicitia managed to successfully reincarnate as her first, others like Shining Armor, Blue Suede Heartstrings, Bossa Nova Heartstrings, and Glory would perform the same deed over time. As described by her, all of her reincarnations are less "only one person has my soul while the rest are soulless clones" and more like co-hosts whose souls share tenancy with hers simultaneously. This not only lets her manifest in one or multiple hosts at the same time, but also gives her hosts a Psychic Link and lets her empower them all at once.
  • Holy Halo: She has a magnificent, multi-layred halo made of Mana energy due to her sheer divine age.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: Despite her anger towards Starfall Dusk for throwing her friends away in her selfish pursuit of godhood, she still looks away as Starfall Dusk is Dragged Off to Hell by Nekelmu for breaking Primeval Law regarding the treatment of souls, unable to watch the horrible sight.
  • Immortality Begins at Twenty: Subverted. Deities get Stronger with Age in the Codexverse — as a sign of her incredible age, she is extremely eldritch in appearance while her strength, magic, and power surpasses even those of Alicorns who were uplifted from early Equine races, such as the Hierarchs that ruled over the Alicorn Civilization.
  • Immortality Bisexuality: By her own admission, she had wives as many as she had husbands. Despite this, she loved all of her partners dearly, regardless of gender.
  • Karmic Jackpot:
    • After learning to control her magic and becoming an excellent spellcaster, Mana would start teaching magic to not only her older siblings, but also the sapient Eohippus who came after them. And despite the process being rather slow (few Eohippus at the time had the aptitude and talent to properly learn magic), she never gave up on them at all. This caught the attention of the Grand Primevals, who offered Mana the option of godhood so she could give magic to her people. Mana accepted, and Ascended as the Alicorn goddess of Magic, Friendship, and Mana after many years of training.
    • On the flipside, Mana would invoke this to her reincarnations. By learning the right lessons and making the right choices, any Equine could cross the threshold and reincarnate as her, gaining her memories, experience, and powers. In addition, all potential reincarnations get to meet Mana herself, who would congratulate them like a teacher praising a successful student.
  • Magical Star Symbols: Her Cutie Mark is a white crescent moon and a six-pointed magenta star with six white points in-between, symbolizing her talent in magic. This went even further when she Ascended, becoming Equinekind's first goddess of Magic. She was also fond of wearing elegant, blue and black robes with starry patterns when she was alive. Long after her death, her Cutie Mark would show up as Cutie Marks for certain magically talented Ponies, such as Twilight Sparkle, Shining Armor, Starlight Glimmer, and the Heartstrings twins Bossa Nova and Blue Suede post-re-Ascension.
  • Magic Hair: She had a two-tone dark and light blue mane and tail composed of Magic energy. Because she is ancient by divine standards, both her mane and tail show every single friend creatures have made even since the dawn of time, whether divine or mortal. She also has feathers made of Friendship energy.
  • Magic Is Feminine: While her father and older siblings could wield magic, it was her and her alone who embodied Magic itself, as well as Mana. However, she sees everyone regardless of gender and sex as equally deserving of magic, and thus is enraged whenever people either misinterpret her as a goddess who blatantly favors females, or think that males are unworthy of magic and try to prevent them from using it. One incident involved her punishing a corrupt matriarchal magocracy for oppressing its male population, using a divine sanction spell to reduce the entire realm to nothing after evacuating everyone she deemed innocent and/or repentant out of the area. She was also deeply unhappy when people referred to her male reincarnations as inferior "clones" for not having her soul like Twilight does.
  • Magic Staff: Her most-known and most-used weapon is an arcane staff called Nexus, which resembles Twilight/Amicitia's staff Arcane Nova, save for a few differences.
  • Magnetic Hero: She was this in life by virtue of being a goddess of Friendship in addition to being naturally charismatic and kindhearted. When she wasn't bringing hostile nations together, she helped keep her family together by working with them on their differences and appealing to their better sides. This also applies to her reincarnation aspects, as many of them were similarly charismatic, friendly, and sociable like her.
  • The Magnificent: Known as "the Empyrean Magician", due to being The Archmage extraordinaire and Equinekind's very first goddess of Magic.
  • Mentor Archetype: Being Equinekind's first goddess of Magic, she served a teacher for her kind, guiding them in learning the art of spellcraft. Sadly, her early death left the Equines struggling to learn how to control their powers responsibly without her guidance. Following her return in the present day, she proceeded to mentor her various reincarnation aspects, such as Twilight Sparkle, Shining Armr, Glory, Blue Suede Heartstrings, and Bossa Nova Heartstrings, guiding them in how to make the best of her memories and vast arcane knowledge they now inherited from her.
  • Mythology Gag: Her appearance was based on Twilight Sparkle's early production concept art design. This becomes meta when Twilight becomes her first Reincarnation.
  • No Name Given: Prior to her entry's publication, Codex entries only called her "The Thirteenth Empyrean", her real name having been lost to history. Later, it's revealed that her actual name is Mana Equus, Equinekind's first goddess of Magic. She is now known as various established characters, such as Twilight Sparkle, Shining Armor, Glory, Blue Suede Heartstrings, and Bossa Nova Heartstrings.
  • Only One Me Allowed Right Now: Because every Equine in existence possesses a piece of her divine essence in them, all of them have the potential to reincarnate as her if they made the right choices and learned the right lessons. Unfortunately, the catch is that she only has a single soul, and Twilight/Amicitia reincarnating as her first initially meant that anyone else who followed will only become a reincarnation "clone" who lacks her soul. This is later subverted with the reveal that all of her reincarnations are actually living "aspects" of her, meaning that she can manifest her soul through multiple bodies thanks to the Psychic Link her hosts share.
  • Our Gods Are Different: She is an "Ascendant" deity, the rarest of the three main types of deities in the Codexverse, and while immortal, she still "ages" by getting Stronger with Age (i.e. becoming bigger, more powerful, and more eldritch). She is also an "Ethereal"-type deity that embodies abstract concepts like Magic, Friendship, and Mana, and as an Eohippus Alicorn, she embodies all mortal Equine races, including Ponykind, though it's noted that many of the Equine races she represented are presently extinct.
  • Our Titans Are Different: She is a "Preeminent"-ranked goddess, putting her divine "age" between 10 million to 100 million years. While older than "Titan" and "Antecedent"-ranked deities, having been born during the dawn of Equidkind, she is younger than "Primeval"-ranked deities, who were around since the dawn of Equus as a planet.
  • Past-Life Memories: Anyone who reincarnates as her gets full access to her memories, giving them information about her life and the various arcane works she created in her lifetime. On the flipside, she herself gets full access to the memories of her modern-day reincarnations, including their own pasts and what happens to them in the present, allowing her to live in her reincarnations' "shoes" just as they lived in hers.
  • Personality Powers: She is an Alicorn goddess who embodies Magic, Friendship, and Mana. Fitting for a mare who believed in The Power of Friendship and taught people how to use magic, while at the same time protecting magic from others who sought to abuse it.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Mana's entry emphasizes how mortal (and divine) Equinekind could have vastly benefited from her teachings had she not died so early in their existence. On the flipside, had Twilight/Amicitia not been the one to become Mana's reincarnation first, then any other Equine could have done so instead due to all of them bearing a portion of Mana's divine essence inside them, such as Sunset Shimmer, Starfall Dusk, and Blue Suede Heartstrings.
    • In her "fight" with Starfall Dusk, while manifesting herself through Twilight/Amicitia, Mana admits that Starfall would have become her divine reincarnation if she made all the right choices and learned all the right lessons, while she could have become an amoral Mad Scientist like Starfall if she made all the wrong choices. Instead, because Starfall tortured and sacrificed her own friends for the sake of godhood and refusing to own up to her crimes, she condemned herself to suffer in Nekelmu's Hell-Realms for breaking Primeval Laws.
  • The Power of Friendship: She staunchly believes in the power of friendship, as her Ascension was heavily influenced by learning of the desire for companionship that motivated her father, King Equus to create her and her fellow Empyreans. One of her divine duties as part of the Alicorn Civilization's pantheon involved teaching both her divine and mortal subjects the importance of friendship and help foster its positive aspects. Seeing her people and even her fellow Empyreans grow corrupt enough to take friendship -- and therefore her -- for granted cut her deeply, which is why she took so long to forgive her surviving "siblings". Twilight/Amicitia and others managing to become her reincarnations/successors was due to sharing similar beliefs in friendship and how it impacts people's lives.
  • The Prankster: By her own admission, she used her magic to pull pranks on her older siblings after gaining it. She has vastly matured since then.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She has a heather-purple pelt, and she is both Equinekind's first goddess of Magic and the most powerful Equine spellcaster the world had ever seen. It had been noted that had she survived up to the present day, she would have easily beaten the likes of Vicearch Iniquitous, Overlord Vondur, Archwizard Manamagus, and Lady Thauma in a fair magical duel. Even after her death and reincarnation, her sheer might can be felt in her various reincarnation aspects, all who were talented and experienced spellcasters themselves prior to becoming her.
  • Rapid-Fire "Yes!": When Twilight/Amicitia correctly answers what she did to reincarnate as her and why she deserved the position, she becomes extremely giddy and hops around Twilight, squealing "Yes!" repeatedly.
Mana Equus: What three words have you said, again and again and again? What belief did you just reassert to the Legion of Domination? What has come to define you more than anything else?
Princess Twilight Sparkle: ...Friendship is Magic.
    Mana Equus: Yes! Yesyesyesyesyesyes...
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: While manifesting herself through Twilight/Amicitia, she gives Starfall Dusk after utterly demolishing the latter, verbally deconstructing Starfall Dusk's completely selfish motives for seeking friendship and pointing out she squandered her own potential by treating her own friends like trash and using them as pawns in her plans for godhood. Then she reveals to Starfall Dusk that she broke the Primeval Laws by binding her friends' souls to herself and thus was marked for eternal damnation in Nekelmu's Hell-Realms.
Starfall Dusk: How are you doing this?!
Princess Amicitia Sparkle Equestria/Mana Equus: BECAUSE THE BONDS I HAVE WITH MY FRIENDS ARE TRUE AND REAL. YOU THREW YOUR FRIENDS AWAY LIKE TRASH.
Starfall Dusk: They were a necessary sacrifice! I could've brought harmony to everyone! Wipe away everything impure and discordant!
(Princess Amicitia Sparkle Equestria/Mana Equus proceeds to free more of Starfall Dusk's friends, causing the latter to lose more power until she turns back to normal)
Starfall Dusk: Tell me...why? Why did you reject me? Why, Mana? How did I disappoint you?!
Princess Amicitia Sparkle Equestria/Mana Equus: YOU DIDN'T BELIEVE IN YOURSELF OR YOUR FRIENDS. YOU BETRAYED YOUR FRIENDS AND STOLE THEIR POTENTIAL FOR YOUR OWN SELFISH ENDS. YOU REJECTED YOUR OWN FRIENDSHIPS AS A QUICK PATH TO GODHOOD. YOU NEVER GREW BEYOND YOUR DAYS WITH YOUR NOSE STUCK IN A BOOK. DID YOU REALLY THINK YOU WOULD BECOME MY REINCARNATION BY SACRIFICING YOUR FRIENDS?
Starfall Dusk: I only wanted harmony! I only wanted to make this world perfect! Why should I be punished for that?! What's wrong with seeking harmony?!
Princess Amicitia Sparkle Equestria/Mana Equus: (looks at Starfall Dusk with disappointment)
Starfall Dusk: Well?! Who do you think you are to judge me?!
Princess Amicitia Sparkle Equestria/Mana Equus: WHO AM I? I AM MANA EQUUS, THE EMPYREAN MAGICIAN. I AM TWILIGHT SPARKLE, CELESTIA'S FAITHFUL STUDENT AND FAITHFUL FRIEND. I AM THE ONE WHO BEQUEATHED MAGIC TO ALL PONYKIND. I AM THE MARE WHO HAD TO LEARN FRIENDSHIP TO SAVE THE WORLD AND FIND WHAT IS TRULY IMPORTANT. (points at Starfall Dusk) AND IN ANOTHER TIMELINE, I COULD HAVE BEEN YOU IF YOU HAD MADE THE RIGHT CHOICES OR I HAD MADE THE WRONG ONES. YOU HAD THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME ME AS YOU WISHED. BUT YOU WERE THE ONE WHO CAST ASIDE EVERYTHING THAT COULD HAVE ALLOWED THAT. WHEN YOU THREW AWAY YOUR FRIENDS AND NEVER LOOKED BACK, YOU THREW AWAY ANY CHANCE OF BECOMING SOMETHING GREATER... AND IN THE PROCESS, YOU BROKE PRIMEVAL LAW BY BINDING THE SOULS OF YOUR FRIENDS AND DENYING THEM THEIR RIGHTOUS AFTERLIFE. AND THERE IS AN INESCAPABLE PRICE FOR THAT TRANSGRESSION.
Starfall Dusk: (realizes what this means) N-No... Don't do this to me...
Princess Amicitia Sparkle Equestria/Mana Equus: YOU HAD MANY CHANCES TO CHANGE. MANY CHANCES TO UNDERSTAND... AND EVEN NOW, YOU WILL NEVER LISTEN. (turns away) I CAN DO NOTHING MORE FOR YOU. ALL I CAN DO NOW IS LEAVE YOU TO THE FATE YOU BROUGHT UPON YOURSELF.'
  • Reincarnated as the Opposite Sex: While her first reincarnation is the female Twilight Sparkle, she later gained male reincarnation "aspects" such as the Heartstrings twins Blue Suede and Bossa Nova, and Twilight's older brother, Shining Armor, and never treated them as anything less despite not being the one(s) to reincarnate as her first.
  • Reincarnation: She eventually reincarnates in the Fourth Age as Twilight Sparkle, who is the first to do so and thus gained her soul. However, over time she starts gaining more reincarnations such as Blue Suede and Bossa Nova, Shining Armor, and Glory. While initially assumed to be "clones" due to lacking her soul, it's eventually revealed that all of her reincarnations are really "aspects" serving as co-hosts for her soul, allowing her to manifest herself through one or multiple bodies if she chose to. The number of people reincarnating as her also gave them a Psychic Link, allowing her to communicate with all of them.
  • Sharing a Body: She presently shares her soul with her various Reincarnation aspects. While Twilight/Amicitia is the first to reincarnate as her, others like Blue Suede, Bossa Nova, Shining Armor, and Glory start making the same leap, making all of them co-hosts of her soul rather than a "true" reincarnation and a bunch of reincarnation "clones" as was initially believed. It also gives them a Psychic Link since they all reincarnated as the same person. These things allows her to manifest her soul through one or multiple host bodies at once, though she is too kind and fettered to do it by force as she respects the lives of all her hosts.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: While confronting the inhabitants of a corrupt matriarchal Equine magocracy, she points out their oppressively misandrist beliefs were automatically invalidated by the mere fact that her father and creator, King Equus, was the first male Equid in existence to wield magic.
Mana Equus: Did you know that my father and creator was the first Equid in existence to wield magic? That alone tells you just how backwards, toxic, and wrong your beliefs are!
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Subverted. At first, this seems to be the case with her, as she had very little presence in the present story outside of her role in granting Equinekind magic and shaping them to what they are now. Later, it's revealed that various characters reincarnated as her, such as Twilight Sparkle, Shining Armor, Glory, Blue Suede, and Bossa Nova, giving her far more influence than is initially apparent.
  • Soiled City on a Hill: Being an ancient goddess of Magic, she is capable of casting divine sanctioning spells to punish even whole civilizations and realms for horrible crimes. One incident involved her punishing a corrupt matriarchal Equine magocracy for its brutal oppression of its male citizens by unleashing a divine sanctioning spell that dismantled the realm within a single hour.
  • Squee: When Twilight correctly answers, "Friendship is magic" to her question how and why she became her Reincarnation, she proceeds to let out a girlish squeal and hop around Twilight, saying a Rapid-Fire "Yes!" while doing so.
  • Squishy Wizard: She was this among her siblings — while utterly phenomenal in magical prowess, she was a very poor fighter, which often led to her relying on her older, more combat-minded siblings for protection. However, this weakness isn't as prevalent as it's still very difficult to harm or kill a deity of her age, due to how divine aging works.
  • Super-Empowering: As a goddess of Friendship and Mana, she can empower her allies in different ways — the former lets her boost her close friends' spells and innate magic reserves, while the latter uses Mana energy to achieve similar results like recharging one's mana reserves. She was also the one who granted Equinekind the ability to use magic, which means every single Equine in existence has the potential and opportunity to become her Reincarnation after her death due to having a piece of her divine essence within them.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: When she wasn't wearing blue topaz barding, she was fond of wearing elegant, black and blue dresses and robes with starry patterns. This goes in line with her Cutie Mark, a white crescent moon with a six-pointed magenta star that symbolizes her talent in magic.
  • Telepathy: As a goddess of Friendship, she possesses telepathic powers to sense and ease people's loneliness. This allows her to counter spells fueled by negative emotions like apathy or hatred.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In her youth, she was a mortal Eohippus filly who completely lacked the ability to wield magic, until she saw her father and older siblings doing it and wanted to emulate them. Many years of training and one Ascension later, she became Equinekind's first goddess of Magic and the first and most powerful Archmage to have ever lived. It's noted that had she survived to the present day, she would have easily trounced the likes of Vicearch Iniquitous, Overlord Vondur, and Lady Thauma — all of them powerful and accomplished spellcasters themselves — in a fair magical duel. Even her own "siblings" and fellow Empyreans, who are similarly ancient and powerful, pale in comparison to her in terms of magical might and skill.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: While she was generally a cheerful and inquisitive filly in her youth, she was also a somewhat bratty kid who frequently wandered off to satisfy her own curiosity and misused her magic to play pranks on her older siblings once she gained it. By the time she reached adulthood and Ascended, she had matured greatly and became the kind, friendly, and self-sacrificing goddess as depicted in countless legends, her flaws lessened to manageable levels.
  • Treachery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Like many of her reincarnations/successors, she strongly believes in The Power of Friendship and sees friendship as one of the greatest joys people can experience. Naturally, betraying one's friends out of malice enrage her.
    • When Mana learned of how Starfall Dusk betrayed and sacrificed her own friends in the name of godhood, she manifests herself through her Reincarnation, Twilight/Amicitia, and proceeded to utterly overpower Starfall Dusk, in the process freeing the souls of Starfall Dusks' friends that she bound to herself after killing them to provide a power boost. And while doing this, she gives Starfall Dusk a "The Reason You Suck" Speech on why she'll never become the goddess she wants to be, before letting Nekelmu drag Starfall Dusk away to her eternal punishment for breaking Primeval Laws.
    • In Mana's eyes, she saw the death of her sister, Plasmatio Equus, as the result of the other Empyreans becoming so corrupt and prideful that they betrayed their family bonds for the sake of their egos, leading to the aforementioned tragedy. This motivated Mana's choice to leave her family behind after the "Twilight of the Alicorns" ended, and is also part of the reason why she took so long in forgiving her surviving siblings log after her own death. To their credit, the other Empyreans gradually realized how Plasmatio's death could have been avoided if they just humbled themselves, and apologized to Mana for how they treated her when she was alive.
  • Walking Spoiler: While all of the Thirteen Empyreans are walking spoilers, her case is more pronounced because several characters like Twilight Sparkle, Shining Armor, Glory, and the Heartstrings twins Blue Suede and Bossa Nova end up becoming her present-day reincarnations, allowing her to influence the world's events to a degree even though she is technically dead. The reason why no one knew about this is because the Church of the Stars kept it a secret to protect the reincarnations from unwanted attention, until it was deemed safe enough to release the information.
  • Walking the Earth: After the fall of the Alicorn Civilization and the Empyreans' separation, she took to traveling the world in hopes that others would understand The Power of Friendship that her own people ignored and even abused. Unfortunately, this led to her death, and Equinekind losing one of its first and greatest teachers.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Following the accidental murder of her sister, Plasmatio Equus, she chewed out her fellow Empyreans for letting themselves fall far to the point of bickering amongst each other and letting one of their own die for their pettiness. While this caused the other Empyreans to have a collective Jerkass Realization, the shame over what they had done eventually became so great that, despite efforts to keep them together as a family, they eventually separated and went their own ways.
Mana Equus: Look at yourselves! You're supposed to be father's first creations! The beings he made to help him make our kind! Help rise us up from the savage beasts we once were! But all I see right now is a pack of savage beasts tearing apart their own! And having already torn apart one. We're... we're not supposed be like this... we're supposed to be friends... family.
  • Winged Unicorn: She's an Eohippus Alicorn with a two-tone dark and light blue mane and tail composed of Magic energy, a magical wing gradient going from heather-purple to dark blue with feathers made of Friendship energy, and a magnificent, multi-layered halo of Mana energy. Her mane and tail shows every single friend creatures have made even since the dawn of time, whether divine or mortal. Because she is a divine Eohippus, the first Equid race to ever exist, she is more eldritch than modern-day Alicorns, possessing traits like toed hooves, blue body stripes, and a Zebra-like tail.
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good!: While manifesting herself through Twilight/Amicitia, she tells an increasingly enraged Starfall Dusk that she would have become her Reincarnation as she truly wanted if Starfall Dusk actually chose to become a better mare instead of selfishly pursuing godhood and treating her friends like trash.
Mana Equus: [AND] IN ANOTHER TIMELINE, I COULD HAVE BEEN YOU IF YOU HAD MADE THE RIGHT CHOICES OR I HAD MADE THE WRONG ONES. YOU HAD THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME ME AS YOU WISHED. BUT YOU WERE THE ONE WHO CAST ASIDE EVERYTHING THAT COULD HAVE ALLOWED THAT. WHEN YOU THREW AWAY YOUR FRIENDS AND NEVER LOOKED BACK, YOU THREW AWAY ANY CHANCE OF BECOMING SOMETHING GREATER.
