Main Characters

    In General
  • Best Friend: They've both known each other for years and have always worked together in their adventures.
  • Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: Ann is a calm, reserved, Action Girl who knows plenty of martial arts. Her best friend, Ayane, is an energetic skilled hacker who enjoys getting too intimacy with Ann.
  • Private Investigator: The two of them formally work as private investigators for Raymond's Agency, which specializes in investigating supernatural phenomenon. Ann does most of the field work and fighting, Ayane acts as background support and a tech specialist.

    Ann Flores

Voiced by: Yuki Hirokawa (Japanese), Suzie Yeung (English)

The protagonist. A young woman working at an agency alongside Ayane to track down her missing brother, Ryan Flores.

  • The Ace: Among Noctis City's Police Department and criminal organizations, Ann is famous for being extremely reliable and dangerous, being the sole field agent for Raymond's Agency but having a 90% success rate, if she hasn't personally beaten them down and proved that she's one of the city's most formidable fighters.
  • Action Girl: She knows martial arts and can deliver serious knock-outs.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Not nearly as much as Ayane, but despite Ann repeatedly rebuffing Ayane's advances, she also interacts with her affectionately during the moments where Ayane isn't acting like a overly-excitable Genki Girl, most prominently caressing Ayane's cheek while resting on her lap after recovering from an episode of Entanglelitus. It's never made clear if Ann holds no feelings for Ayane, or if Ann just is put off by Ayane's more aggressive displays of intimacy.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: It's not Ann that harbors any power that endangers the world, she instead possesses a connection with an eldritch being called Amok, who according to the Masked Woman, is capable of destroying the world if released. In the Good Ending, Ann manages to sever the connection, ensuring that Amok can never emerge again. In the Bad Ending, Amok uses Ann's Moment of Weakness to fully take over her body, and proceeds to turn the entire world into a desolate Hell on Earth.
  • The Bartender: She used to be Nakamura's Master Bartender before she moved out, and can still work part time if the player wishes. Nakamura is constantly asking her to come back full-time.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She often looked out for Ryan whenever he got bullied and got him out of a bad situation when he almost fell in with the wrong crowd. After Ryan goes missing, she sets off to find him.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Her usual outfit is blue, along with her combat suit that's also dark blue.
  • Bridal Carry: In the epilogue with Ayane. After fulfilling her promise to take Ayane to see the ocean, Ayane requests that Ann carries her. Despite being reluctant at first, Ann decides to do so.
  • Bullying a Dragon: When she slapped her brother Ryan, for participating in an implied illegal street race. She was on the receiving end of this where a group of punks threw objects at her for interfering, this unleashed Amok who was dormant inside of her and slaughtered everyone present.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She's pretty well-endowed in the chest department, shown especially with her battle suit.
  • Celibate Hero: She doesn't show any particular romance towards someone, even turning down Nakamura's offer to be introduced to a suitable lover. Aside from that, despite Ann repeatedly rebuffing Ayane's advances, she also interacts with her affectionately during moments where Ayane isn't acting overly-excitable.
  • Combat Stilettos: Her combat suit sports these.
  • Deal with the Devil: As part of the Circe Consortium's experiments when she was a small child, she accidentally traveled to Hinterland after the Gatekeeper Project went horribly wrong. Lost, alone, and facing the death of all of her "siblings", she finds Amok and she offers Ann an opportunity to "change her fate". Ann accepts, but thanks to a consequence of immaturity and Laser-Guided Amnesia inflicted on her by the Consortium, she does not remember this and only recovers bits and pieces in flashback sequences.
  • Does Not Like Spam: She doesn't like coffee, preferring tea for its smooth flavor.
  • Evil Me Scares Me: She's been aware that she's had an "other self" and it was responsible for damaging Ryan's eye, and the revelation of it causes her great concern. Rightfully so, as Amok does possess the power to destroy the world.
  • Expressive Hair: When Ayane leads Ann to a dress shop to help her get into Nocturne Maze, Ann's hair shoots straight up when the shop owner's three (bulky) assistants arrive to put the dress on her.
  • Fist Bump: Shares on with Ryan in the epilogue after returning home.
  • Formfitting Wardrobe: Almost all of her outfits have this in some capacity, between her battle suit and several outfits with tight leggings.
  • Friend on the Force: She's on friendly terms with the NCPD, having been deputized by them numerous times before the game because she is both extremely reliable and the police are constantly swamped with just how many crimes and investigations are ongoing at any given day, with far too few badges to deal with it.
  • Going Commando: While she does wears panties at least some of the time, going by how she's covering her behind and front in some official art, she likely doesn't wear any underwear in dresses with a higher cut.
  • Hartman Hips: The outfits that show off her figure reveal that she's got a pretty wide pair of hips, which are particularly shown off when she's walking.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Her main weapons are swords, which she carries with large and dual-wielded blades.
  • Hidden Depths: Her bio states that she's a fan of baseball and is interested in practicing ikebana whenever she has time.
  • It's All My Fault: Her main reason for moving out on her own spurned from losing control and attacking Ryan, taking his eye. Nobody blamed her for it, but the incident still troubled her.
  • Jiggle Physics: Surprisingly not as noticeable as it could be, but she does have some bounce when she runs.
  • Moment of Weakness: In the Bad Ending, by refusing to accept The Consortium's order, this results in Ryan being fatally shot. At that moment, Amok uses the opportunity to pry on Ann's anger on the promise of reviving Ryan and enacting vengeance, causing Amok to fully take over Ann's body and unleashing a hellstorm of destruction on the entire world.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Alongside her Shower Scene, she also has an array of outfits that shows off her figure.
  • Non-Nude Bathing: Suprisingly enough, she's shown to be wearing a white bottom piece while she's showering, but she isn't wearing any sort of top.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Each time she awakens her Super Mode, her hair changes from black to turquoise.
  • Power Glows: Her hair occasionally turns blue whenever she's going all-out in battle.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Whenever Amok manifests the most intensely and powerfully in earth, Ann gains boney wings on her back. They are not just for show as they ripped apart Ryan's original eye.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Upon awakening her Super Mode powers, her hair also lengthens each time she activates it.
  • She-Fu: Ann knows a variety of martial arts that she can use in combat. She can also upgrade her Grom system to have a number of acrobatic hand-to-hand techniques, such as a running knee strike that can launch enemies off their feet and into each other for extra damage.
  • Something Itis: She's been going under treatment for 'Entanglelitis', which causes her to lose consciousness and attack people. It's actually a cover for her supernatural ability to sense and mentally visit other dimensions, something that the Circle Consortium wants to cover up.
  • Stylish Protection Gear: Her battle suit, which comes with a number of extra features thanks to the Grom System.
  • Super Mode: After awakening to her cross-dimensional powers, Ann is now able to help Amok manifest in this world to gain an extreme boost in health regeneration, attack power, two new deadly katanas and an infinite supply of ninja stars, and a devastating new move set that will wipe the floor with most anything or leave them severely damaged by the time it runs out.
  • Tranquil Fury: Near the end of the game when she reunites with Ryan held captive by G, Ann furiously but calmly warns G if Ryan and Ayane got harmed, she would make sure he suffers for it.
  • You Are Number 6: Ann used to be referred to as "Subject 06" by the Circle Consortium, and many staff will not hesitate to simply call her "06".
  • You Monster!: In the Bad Ending, she furiously screams "You Bastards!" towards The Consortium after Ryan was fatally shot.

    Ayane Misuno

Voiced by: Tsugumi Sakuragi (Japanese), Lizzie Freeman (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2yilewk64el91.jpg

Ann's best friend, a genius hacker who lends her support throughout Ann's mission.

  • A Day in the Limelight: In the Mysterious Console DLC, she investigates the device while helping out Noni.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She often calls Ann "darling". When Ann tells her to stop using it, Ayane playfully asks if Ann would be fine with "Baby", "Honey", or "Lover" instead.
  • Ambiguously Gay: It's hard to find out if Ayane's declarations of love, affectionate names, and constant displays of intimacy and physical affection towards Ann are from lesbian romantic attraction or just her finding these over-the-top displays of love funny, despite knowing that Ann will constantly reject them.
  • Angry Cheek Puff: One of Ayane's expressions has her with puffed-up cheeks whenever discussing details that annoy her.
  • Big Eater: If the buffet that the Circle Consortium's chef cooked for her is any indication, Ayane has quite the appetite despite her petite appearance and mostly being confined to her family's mansion.
  • Child Prodigy: According to her bio, she won a hacking competition at the age of 10.
  • Covert Pervert:
    • Ann's "Cinnabar" outfit is implied to be a gift from Ayane. It is a qipao-inspired dress, with an open cleavage diamond, a very short cut skirt that shows off plenty of Ann's legs, and is one of the most revealing and sexy outfits that Ann can have.
    • At the start of the game, after a successful delivery of the Paipai drone and Ayane being able to remotely converse and be with Ann again, Ann says she needs to take a shower. Ayane eagerly informs her that Ann could take the drone with her into the shower, a plan that Ann immediately shoots down.
  • Damsel in Distress: In the final chapter of the game, the Circle Consortium kidnaps her and holds her hostage to ensure Ann's cooperation in their plans. Ann is none-too-happy to hear that Ayane is being kept in the medical ward, and even more pissed when she discovers that Ayane has been living as luxuriously as ever with the Consortium providing her both a personal doctor and a gourmet chef who's whipped up a massive buffet for her at her bedside.
  • Delicate and Sickly: She has some mysterious condition that keeps her confined to her family mansion. She's getting regular treatments from her butler to recover from it but it's never quite mentioned what it is. Signs include her always having a wheelchair to sit on if it's not nearby as she's heavily implied but never explicitly stated to be paraplegic, the necessity to give the Paipai drone after 2 years of friendship with Ann, and having been physically present in past photos such as the commemorative photo taken at their boss, Raymond's, office. Despite this, her hologram is very acrobatic and active, capable of standing up, jumping, and crawling, though this is probably cued animations and Ayane taking advantage of not having to physically move around.
  • Facial Markings: Has three purple triangles lined up under each of her eyes.
  • Fangirl: Of Noctis City's OK-Chan, who asks Ann in a side mission to locate her. Though, said idol turned out to be a guy all along, she took it in stride and compliments her incredible moves, still.
  • Fiction 500: Her family is extremely rich, with Ayane saying that despite her poor physical condition, her butler sees to all of her needs, she lives in a mansion, and her family is apparently so rich and influential that her father could easily get someone citizenship in Noctis City, which has a very strict immigration policy due to being one of the less crappy and violent locations in a Crapsack World.
  • Gamer Chick: She enjoys gaming, even spending all-nighters.
  • Genius Cripple: She's heavily implied but never explicitly stated to be a paraplegic and wheelchair-bound, but she's also the world's youngest and most skilled hackers and a technological genius in general.
  • Genki Girl: Energetic, cheerful, and very attached to Ann, Ayane is always brimming with energy.
  • The Glomp: She is extremely fond of doing this to Ann, with either the height difference or intentional targeting ending up with Ayane's face in Ann's chest.
  • Hard Light: It seems that her hologram is made of this, considering Ann can rest on its lap.
  • Motor Mouth: Both in-game and in in-game documents, Ayane is noted to almost never shut up, and does most of the commentary and chatter, especially compared to the much more reserved Ann.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Some accident before the start of the game left Ayane unable to leave her family's mansion, necessitating the Paipai drone to continue interacting with Ann. It's implied that she may be paraplegic, considering she always has a futuristic wheelchair around her, if the hardlight holograms are not a 1-1 replication of her movements.
    • One of the delivery people that she interrogates during the OK-chan investigation is reluctant to help her due to her hobby of regularly having dangerous items delivered through their agency. What these orders were and what incidents happened are never explained.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Shortly before the Circle Consortium kidnaps her and is implied to have subdued the family manor's security system, Ayane is suspiciously somber and asks Ann unusual questions, allegedly worried about Ann getting "bored" without Ayane and apologizing for her Motor Mouth tendencies. Ann realizes something is wrong and shortly after, Ayane is physically restrained and the Consortium shuts off her Paipai drone connection.
  • Playful Hacker: She's very skilled in hacking, also provides Ann the means to open any encrypted locks.
  • Sleep Cute: She tends to sleep besides Ann.
  • Spoiled Sweet: She's from a very rich family and has more than enough familial ties and merits to become very big-headed and entitled, but Ayane is an incredibly sweet, pleasant, and friendly girl. About the only people that don't like her are the poor delivery people that have to deliver her (oftentimes dangerous) packages to her family's mansion.
  • Thanks for the Mammaries: When Ann reunites with Ayane at the end of the game, Ayane takes the time to glomp Ann in a manner that looks like she's grabbing Ann's breasts.
  • Utility Party Member: As she's wholly unsuited for combat, and the Paipai drone is unarmed, most of Ayane's helping Ann comes in the form of hacking into systems when Ann is unable to do so herself, researching and looking up targets and locations of interest, and providing useful reminders and hints from time to time.
  • Voice with an Internet Connection: She speaks with Ann and primarily interacts with her through a hologram projected by the Paipai drone she gifts Ann at the start of the game.
  • Younger Than They Look: Downplayed. While her appearance is appropriate for her given age, she doesn't look old enough to try Nakamura's alcholic drinks (Ayane's 18 and assuming that Noctis City's drinking age is 18, like in most of the world).

The Flores Family

    In General
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Ryan is the youngest of the Flores family, being at the age of 20.
  • The Ghost: Of the Flores', only Helen doesn't make a physical appearance. Nakamura hangs a Lampshade at her absence by referring to Helen as Ann's imaginary sister.
  • Good-Guy Bar: They make their residence from their family owned bar called "The Sicilian Jar".
  • Happily Adopted: All of the Flores children lived happy, fulfilling childhoods under Holtz's care, and even into adulthood they all have a very positive, healthy relationship.
  • Missing Mom: Holtz's wife is never mentioned outside of his journals kept in a locked safe. It's implied that he lost her and retreated into himself in grief, before deciding to adopt Helen in an attempt to reintegrate back into society.
  • Raised By Robot: Helen, Nakamura, Ann, and Ryan were all taken in by Holtz after he had underwent cyborg conversion for his Mechanika Virus treatment.

    Holtz Flores

Voiced by: Hiroyuki Takanaka (Japanese)

The patriarch of the Flores family. Once an engineer for one of Noctis City's biggest Mega Corps, he resigned for unknown reasons and eventually moved to Margarativille and started his own business, "The Sicilian Jar Bar", located just in front of the family home.

Though, these days most of the bar's actual management is left to his adopted daughter, Nakamura, and he just spends all day collecting books and playing videogames, he's still willing to act as a loving, affectionate, and involved father to his adoptive kids and whoever else might need his help.

  • The Bartender: He was this before Nakamura took over, and is now currently in an informal retirement where he still owns the bar and the house but Nakamura is the manager.
  • Bookworm: He loves collecting physical books in an era when almost everyone reads digitized content, though Ann examining his expansive personal library notes that he doesn't actually read most of them.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his eccentricities and incidents that may get him labeled as a Bumbling Dad, he was once an engineer for one of the city's biggest technology firms with ties to the Circle Consortium, he ran a successful bar before his daughter took it over, and he's an excellent father to his adoptive children and a responsible father figure to whoever needs him.
  • Full-Conversion Cyborg: He was a victim of the Mechanika Virus, like most of the inhabitants of Noctis City, but instead of getting the free bioskin from the government, he simply decided to have the rest of him permanently roboticized.
  • Good Parents: None of the Flores children have anything seriously bad to say about him aside from some excusable bad habits and eccentricities. When Ann leaves the young, distressed, and unconscious Sigrid with Holtz, he also does not hesitate to act as a caring, loving, and responsible caretaker for them until he can contact the proper authorities.
  • House Husband: By default, considering he's a widowed, never-remarried adoptive father by choice, but the Flores home is well-maintained, he does most of the cooking, and likely all the other domestic duties.
  • Lost Lenore: His password-locked journal reveals that he lost his wife in the initial outset of the Mechanika Virus. After suffering from what is heavily implied to be grief-and-trauma induced depression and isolating himself from the world, he decided to adopt Helen as part of his way of moving on from the loss of both his wife and his humanity.
  • Papa Wolf: When Sigrid accidentally summons the real Santa Claus and Holtz mistakes them for an intruder, he doesn't hesitate to pull a shotgun on them unless they either identify themselves or get the hell out of his house. It's only from Sigrid using herself as a human shield that Holtz doesn't get the opportunity to pull the trigger.
  • Real Men Cook: Though his business is in serving alcoholic drinks, Holtz can cook for his adoptive children and anyone else who needs a meal.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: His weapon of choice for home defense (and likely defending his business, before he retired from manning the bar) is a futuristic pump-action shotgun. Thankfully for Santa Claus and Sigrid, he decides not to pull the trigger.
  • Skewed Priorities: Zig-Zagged. When Sigrid summons Santa Claus to the Flores House, Holtz's first order of business, is, of course, to protect the young child and get this mysterious, probably criminal stranger out of his house. But, when Santa Claus is already leaving, Holtz suddenly realizes Saint Nick owes him 20 years worth of undelivered Christmas presents. By the next scene, the living room is full of them, implying that Holtz kept Santa Claus at gunpoint and didn't let him leave till Holtz got his gifts.

    Helen Flores
One of the older adoptive Flores children, and Ann's adoptive older sister. She is currently going on trips around the globe, so she's only mentioned/seen from her e-mails and postcards.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: She's shown to have blonde hair, and from a postcard she sent to Ann, she's quite pretty-looking too.
  • The Ghost: She has so little presence Nakamura jokes she's imaginary, even though they've got family photos together. Until the True Ending rolls around where she finally shows up in person.
  • Walking the Earth: She's currently on an international backpacking trip, and since the entire game is confined to Noctis City, she's never seen in person.

    Nakamura Flores
One of the older adoptive Flores children, and Ann's adoptive older sister. She currently serves as the manager of The Sicilian Jar bar in Holtz's stead, now that he's informally retired from personally manning the business.
  • Bear Hug: Delivers one to Ann in the epilogue after the latter returns home with Ryan.
  • The Bartender: When Ann isn't tending bar, Nakamura is the one mixing up drinks alongside being the manager and keeping the place running.
  • Cool Big Sis: She is nothing but friendly and caring for Ann, her younger adoptive sister, offering her advice though she does tease Ann and keeps insisting that Ann join her as a full-time bartender to lessen the load. The Sicilian Jar is a very popular local watering hole.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Holtz found adopted Nakamura from a government orphanage when she was 9. As he writes it, she was covered in bruises and he suspects that the staff didn't do a good job of preventing bullying between the kids. Still, she is confident, happy, and pleasant to be around.

    Ryan Flores

Voiced by: Aaron Dismuke (English)

The youngest of the Flores children and the only boy. He can be rather headstrong and stubborn, going off to try and do things on his own or for the sake of his family, but often ultimately fails and needs to be bailed out by his older sisters, something that bothers him greatly.

As of the start of the game, he is missing after trying to hunt down the mysterious "N540" that is supposed to be able to cure Ann's mysterious "Entangleitis".

  • Delinquents: Flashbacks reveal that he once once hung out with the wrong crowd and participated in an illegal bike racing to earn prize money. This called Ann's attention who proceed to slap him for this, and caused the crowd he's hanging out with to retaliate.
  • Distressed Dude: Since he was young, Ryan has had more initiative and desire to be badass than he has had the skills and strength to actually back-up his bravado. From bullies when they were kids to being kidnapped by the Circle Consortium and held hostage to force Ann's cooperation, poor guy never quite succeeds when he wants to help others or just get himself out of trouble by his own hands.
  • Eye Scream: Amok's manifesting inside of Ann back when she was in college lead to one of his eyes getting ripped apart when he attempted to calm her down. Unlike with Dr. Alan, who has an Eyepatch of Power, he seems to have gotten treatment for a cybernetic replacement with bioskin, making it indistinguishable from the lost original.
  • Fatal Flaw: Recklessness. When Ryan gets an idea in his head, he can rarely be persuaded to stop or slow down long enough to think about the consequences of his actions. His trying to investigate N540 despite being constantly told to let it go and that it's a myth leads to his going missing and presumably kidnapped at the start of the game. In the Bad Ending, his impulsiveness causes him to lose both his sister and bring about the apocalypse.
  • Find the Cure!: After the incident with Ann's Entangleitis, he spent several times to find N540 to help her. After receiving a mysterious message on his computer telling him where he could find it, he immediately heads out to search it.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: The unwilling, unknowing recipient of this at the end of the game. In order to retain site security and make sure Ryan does not mess with their operations or become a pawn of someone else, the Consortium decides to wipe the memories of his encounter with them, and implant fake ones where he managed to find N540 and cure Ann.
  • Slept Through the Apocalypse: In the bad ending, he's shot by The Consortium. After Amok has destroyed the world, he awakens to the sound of Bad Vibrations to find the building in ruins, everyone in the vicinity gone, and arrives shocked to find the outside is now a Hell on Earth.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: It's weighed quite heavily on him that all of his older adoptive sisters are much more successful and reliable than him, leaving Ryan to constantly be the one being saved or needing rescue after his plans go awry.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: It's his going missing at the start of the game and leaving a damaged ROM and other digital journals of his investigations into the mysterious "N540" that lead Ann right back to the Circle Consortium and their plans. If you chose to take his advice during the Ending sequence, his justified distrust of the Circle Consortium and his reckless attacking of Dr. G leads to Ann summoning Amok completely in the world, causing The End of the World as We Know It.

Allies and Friends of Ann

    Dr. Alan Doyle
A doctor who occasionally checks up on Ann for her Entanglelitis. He was also the inventor of the Grom Suit and is responsible for Ann's augmented combat abilities.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He's the inventor of the Grom Suit, giving it adaptive learning functions that allows Ann to augment and improve her already considerable combat skills at the start of the game.
  • Genius Slob: He is a whiz at designing combat systems and AI programs to gather evidence and improve said system. He's also Ann's greatest chance at curing her Entangleitis at the start of the game, what with him also being a medical doctor and capable of using his scanning equipment to learn about complex diseases. He is also extremely filthy, a slob, and lazy, everything from the waist down being a pair of camouflage boxers and his bare, metallic feet, he has been known to have eaten a suspiciously moldy burger because he was too lazy to throw it out and order different take-out, and his lab is an absolute mess, with collectible logs of his experiments scattered everywhere.
  • The Lost Lenore: Doyle used to be a lot more successful, clean, and happy in life, until he lost his wife in a car accident. Not helping matters was that their child was suffering from some unknown brain condition that Alan was trying to cure, using the Circle Consortium's funding and help, and inventing the MI memory erasure procedure as a consequence.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After his underground lab is discovered by Ann, he disappears entirely and never brought up again.

    Raymond

Voiced by: Aaron Dismuke (English)

The head of the agency where Ann and Ayane work at.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up to rescue Ann from a collapsing building in Noctic after she loses consciousness during her first battle with Loki.
  • Hero of Another Story: He's mostly absent from the story due to investigating and searching for a Mad Doctor wearing a plague mask, which is referenced in the game's digital artbook.
  • Paranormal Investigation: His agency looks into the occult and inexplicable phenomenon.

    Masked Woman

Voiced by: Min Konno (Japanese), Amber Lee Connors (English)

A masked woman who Ann encounters at various points.

  • Cool Mask: She wears a silver face-plate mask.
  • Dramatic Unmask: After Ann manages to prevent Amok's release, she reveals her face to Ann before making her leave.
  • Mysterious Stranger: She shows up to give Ann cryptic clues on what she's getting into before suddenly vanishing.
  • My Name Is ???: Her name is shown as blocked out in text.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: She often appears in front of Ann and then disappears immediately after her conversation.

    Sigrid

Voiced by: Nagisa Kakegawa (Japanese), Sarah Wiedenheft (English)

A little girl who Ann finds beneath Freeway 42.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Receives one from Ann just before the battle with C to reassure her that she'll be fine.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Having the power to change an aspect of reality is generally a dangerous ability, but Sigrid understands what its capable of and doesn't use it unless absolutely necessary.
  • Children Are Innocent: She understands the nature of her special ability but words it as magic, thanks to the "Grand Wizard" teaching her how to harness and contain it for the most part. When she's in the Flores family, she also doesn't do much but watch TV and fall for the commercials targeted at children.
  • Child Mage: Her caretakers decided to use fantasy terminology to have her better understand her abilities, and often refers to it as 'magic'.
  • Expy: Likely one of SCP-239, as she has similar Reality Warper abilities, and the fact that she was convinced by the Consortium that she is a wizard. She even summons "Santa" because she wished it.
  • Growling Gut: After spending time resting at the Flores residence, Sigrid wakes up and explains how she got to Freeway 42 before her stomach growls.
  • Hunger Causes Lethargy: When Ann finds her at Freeway 42, she soon collapses from hunger.
  • Reality Warper: She have the power to alter the whims of reality by focusing on it. As such, this allows improbable capabilities, like making a plant grow instantly or making Santa Claus appear to give her a present.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: Of Sigurros from the SCP Foundation. Both of them possess Reality Warper abilities, but with differences; Sigurros is a Creepy Child who's convinced she is a witch unable to control her powers and forcibly kept in a coma. Sigrid on the other hand is a Nice Girl who is considered a Child Mage with full control of her ability without being restrained and assists Ann in defeating the Big Bad.

    Yuko Yada
Ayane's family butler.
  • Battle Butler: Official design art shows she's skilled in katana wielding.
  • The Ghost: She was first mentioned in the main story to be looking after Ayane. She later appears in the DLC.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: She wears a blue kimono.

    Noni
A young girl trapped in a game console. She's the secondary main character of the Mysterious Console DLC.
  • Badass Adorable: She's young enough to use various weapons against multiple enemies.
  • Dead All Along: She's a digital copy of the real Noni, who died of chronic disease years ago.
  • Given Name Reveal: Her full name is Jet Noni.
  • Identical Stranger: She bears a resemblance to Ann. The few differences being that Noni is a teen with Youthful Freckles and light blue hair.
  • I Die Free: She chooses to leave the console, knowing she'll disappear forever, to finally be free instead of remaining trapped within.
  • The Speechless: She's unable to talk, due to not being given a way to when the console was first activated.
  • Super-Deformed: This is how she looks within the game console.
  • Talking with Signs: She occasionally uses books to spell words on the ground to communicate with Ayane.
  • Youthful Freckles: On the versus boss screen, she's shown to have these.

The Circle Consortium

    In General
A mysterious organization that Ann comes into conflict with during her search for Ryan. Allegedly, they hold the key to the mysterious N540 that could cure Ann's condition.
  • Code Name: The senior-level staff and facility supervisors of the Circle Consortium all go by capital letters of the English alphabet, i.e. "Dr. G" or simply, "G".
  • Enemy Civil War: The morally-dubious Consortium ends up in disarray due to Dr. C going rogue, taking a portion of the personnel with him, and causing a massive containment breach. By the time Ann infiltrates their base, she ends up having to fight through a mix of both the Consortium's security and C's underlings. It's ambiguous which mooks belong to which faction.
  • Enemy Mine: During the infiltration of their base, Ann fights and probably kills a huge number of security personnel, but since Dr. C has gone rogue and is trying to enact his plan to get the superweapon from Hinterland and destroy the world, Dr. G decides that working with Ann is much more efficient and all security personnel in the lobby suddenly become non-hostile.
  • Expy: Of the SCP Foundation. Considering the game was originally in the SCP-verse, this is pretty obvious. More specific characters in the Consortium are possibly expies themselves as well - C is based on Dr. Clef, G is based on Dr. Gears, B is possibly based on Dr. Bright, and K is probably based on Dr. Kondraki, considering his antagonistic relationship with C and actually sword-fighting him at one point.
  • N.G.O. Superpower: They are a vast, powerful, and mysterious organization that dedicates itself to keeping up the Masquerade of the world by covering up the supernatural and otherworldly dangers which threaten it. They've been confirmed in-game to be responsible for spurring the development of the Mechanika virus vaccine and giving Ann her supernatural power to visit and see other dimensions, euphemistically referred to as her "Etangleitis".
  • Omniscient Council of Vagueness: The Consortium is headed by one of these, and even the senior staff refer to them as a collective entity. C claims that they're Not So Omniscient After All, but their true machinations are never clarified. Whatever they are, they're not particularly nice, considering G had to put on a Jerkass Façade just to convince them that making Ann a free agent of the Consortium would be viable.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Both the organization and the people that run it on its highest echelons all believe that there is little that is "too costly" or "unacceptable" when it comes to protecting the world from LIMEN and other supernatural threats. Among the crimes they've committed, there are: secret concentration camps for incurable victims of the Mechanika Virus, human experimentation on Ann and the other children, and a private army who have highly-trained assassins and convoluted information sharing protocols to ensure that no one that needs to know, knows anything, nor will anyone be able to find records of what they have done. They'd be Good All Along if it weren't for their questionable ethical decisions.

One of the top members of The Consortium who harbors hidden agendas towards accessing the power of Hinterland. He is behind the disappearance of Ryan and wants something with Ann, but much of him is shrouded in mystery.

  • Big Bad: He's the mastermind who instigated Ryan's kidnapping to lure Ann in and use her to control Hinterland so he can release Amok and destroy the world.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: It turns out that he was brainwashed by some faction looking to use Hinterland for their own ends.
  • Draconic Abomination: His malice is expelled from his body and transforms into Nidhogg, the ancient dragon from Norse Mythology.
  • Evil Overlooker: The menacing black dragon that looms over Ann and Ayane in the cover is his One-Winged Angel form, Nidhogg.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: At first, he speaks normally, until much later his voice starts sounding much demonic as a result of his dragon incarnation overtaking his body.
  • Eye-Obscuring Hat: His eyes are always covered by his hat.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He seemingly acts a collectively composed man. As he discusses the extent of his Evil Plan to his subordinates and casually dismisses his co-workers protest, they immediately call out on how insane he actually is. Overtime, the mask starts to crack apart as he realizes that his scheme is on the verge of being thwarted and forsakes his original plan to launching an assault against The Consortium to prevent anyone else from getting in his way.
  • Freudian Slip: The words he shouts before his Nidhogg form is destroyed reveal he solely sought the Artifact of Doom just to revive his lover, D.
  • Hate Sink: He has utterly no remorse for the potential damage his plan might cause, which causes the other members of the Consortium to turn against him. It becomes more ambiguous with the reveal that an outside party had brainwashed him into unleashing the Hinterland.
  • Love Makes You Evil: His core motivation to access Hinterland that would destroy the world stems from his heartbreak over the loss of the woman he loved, who died in an accident years ago and left him with nothing but hatred for the world. Or at least, that's the excuse presented. It's left ambiguous how much of his destructive intentions were his own with the reveal that an outside party had brainwashed him.
  • Motive Decay: At first, he intended on obtaining The Dypheus' Breath for his own gain. Then decides on taking over The Consortium after Castor's defeat.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: He duels K with daggers, and it goes without saying that he's a lunatic.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: His dragon incarnation, Nidhogg is an amalgamation of his own evil expelled by Sigrid out of his body given physical form.
  • Unknown Rival: For most of the game, Ann is unaware that he's luring her towards The Consortium.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He starts to undergo one once Ann has arrived at The Consortium's facility. With concerns that his Evil Plan could be prevented and learning Sigrid had survived his Uriah Gambit, his voice starts to shift into a demonic entity while ranting at his associates when they tell him he doesn't have a chance, to the point he attempts to overthrow The Consortium and take over for himself. After realizing Castor, the only person who could've initiated his master plan, had been defeated, he goes into a ballistic rage.
C: That imbecile Castor failed!!! AAAAHAAAAAGRH!!!
  • You're Insane!: Absalom and G both call him out for his insanity when they learn the full extent of his scheme.

One of the first members of The Consortium and accomplished doctor.

  • For Your Own Good: He orders Ryan's memories of his encounter with the Consortium wiped to prevent his recklessness from getting him killed by interfering.
  • Good Is Not Nice: It says something that even the Consortium's Token Good Teammate has a ruthless streak a mile wide. Even though he ultimately does have Ann's best interest at heart, he still isn't above using her loved ones to move her to where she needs to be. The revised ending reveals that the Council was breathing down his neck during the conflict with C, so he couldn't afford to appear too accommodating to Ann. He's actually much more reasonable in private.
  • Indubitably Uninteresting Individual: What makes him standout among his colleagues is just how normal he looks compared to the rest of them, being nothing more than a fairly generic-looking middle-aged man in a labcoat.
  • In the Back: In the bad ending, Amok stabs him through the back after taking over Ann's body.
  • Jerkass Façade: He's fairly cold and blunt to Ann when they first meet in person and doesn't do much to assure Ann of Ryan and Ayane's safety. It turns out that he was under the eye of the Council at the time, so he needed to frame his actions in a calculating way as to convince them that Ann returning back to her adoptive family as an additional set of eyes for the Consortium would be beneficial. He's actually much more accommodating once he's able to talk with Ann in his office.
  • The Promise: In the past incident that took the life of C's lover, she had made a request to G to look out for C if she died.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: The Consortium is built up as an antagonistic Ancient Conspiracy throughout the game, and while he appears to be reasonable, his willingness to have Ryan detained and mind-wiped along with his initial interactions with Ann in the original ending do paint him as a Manipulative Bastard. The additional sequence leading to the Revised Ending reveals that he actually does have Ann's best interests at heart and wants her cooperation of her own free will. His only interest in Amok is whether or not Ann can independently neutralize her as a threat.
  • Token Good Teammate: He's a firm believer in rationally which is why he ends up helping Ann reunite with Ryan and assisting her in defeating C. It turns out that, despite the tense situation and having armed guards around with guns, his interactions with Ann are actually entirely in good faith, which means he is being entirely honest about the collar he gives Ann and he offers her a method of allowing her to properly deal with Amok and gain full control over her powers, allowing her to live a normal life while acting as a pair of eyes for the Consortium.

A member of The Consortium, also a monkey in a lab coat.

  • Ambiguously Human: A document found later on reveals that he wasn't always a Talking Animal, but it doesn't specify if his previous form was human.
  • Dr. Fakenstein: Subverted. Ayane calls him "Doctor Monkestein", but he's mostly calm and reserved and not fully malicious.
  • Forced Transformation: A document in the main Consortium offices implies that his current state was the result of some unspecified incident.
  • Oh, Crap!: Panics in the bad ending after the security bots shoot down Ryan.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: He guides Ann to Ryan's location when she infiltrates the Consortium's base, but his means of testing and realizing her capabilities so that she can be of use against C involve sending her through heavily-guarded sectors filled with hostile defense systems and guards.
  • Talking Animal: He's a monkey with high intellect working with the Consortium. A document found later on implies that he wasn't always like this but got forced into the body of a monkey from an unspecified incident.
  • Verbal Tic: Occasionally falls into speaking like a monkey whenever he speaks.
  • Was Once a Man: A document states he wasn't a monkey initially and an experiment was what turned him into one.

    K
One of the four main members of the Consortium, who poses as a photographer during the ocean prison arc while observing Ann. He and C used to be friends, but now they have an antagonistic relationship.
  • King Incognito: He's first seen participating in the seaborne prison operation, and briefly interacts with Ann on the way there. Considering he was against C's plan from the start, he was likely trying to get a better idea of what was happening on the ground.
  • Royal Rapier: In the finale, he brandishes one of these to duel C to keep him busy while Sigurd casts her spell. For most of the fight they're evenly matched, though he gets disarmed a few times.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: While telling a certain story to Ann, his glasses shine brightly.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With C. A prior incident caused them to drift apart, possibly the same one that triggered C's slide into villainy.

    D
A former member of the Consortium who was killed in a lab incident.
  • The Lost Lenore: To C. She was his lover, and her death after the lab incident is what drove him to obtain The Dypheus' Breath for his own ambitions.
  • Posthumous Character: She's been deceased for years prior.
  • The Promise: At some point before her death, she asked G to look after C if anything were to happen to her.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her death was the reason for C's actions, who sought to access Hinterland with the intention of reviving her.

Field Agents

    Absalom
A mysterious man from the Middle East who enjoys fights against strong opponents.
  • Ambiguously Human: After Ann defeats him in their first encounter, he disappears in shades of energy and is later shown speaking to C in the form of a large octahedron. His character bio mentions that he's from the Middle East, but the extent of his other form isn't elaborated enough to explain on just what he is.
  • Blood Knight: He really enjoys fighting stronger opponents
  • Power Echoes: His words have a heavy mechanical reverb to them, indicating the unnatural power he wields.
  • Significant White Hair, Dark Skin: As a man hailing from the Middle East, he has fairly dark skin, which is contrasted by his light gray hair. And he is a super-powered fighter.
  • Sword Beam: His blade shoots off energy waves when he attacks, he can even form a tornado attack filled with them.
  • Tron Lines: He has glowing tattoos etched all over his upper body, which are exposed by his unzipped jacket, as well as his forehead.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: After being beaten by Ann in their second encounter, he teleports out with a promise that he isn't done with her yet.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: His first encounter can be the first truly challenging boss in the game, especially if you haven't been diligent with your upgrades, possessing fast attack patterns that don't have immediately obvious tells and a full-screen super attack that requires some esoteric thinking to disrupt.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: His jacket is always wide open to expose his upper torso.
  • We Will Meet Again: Promises this to Ann after she defeats him in their encounter.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He has light gray hair, and is a bloodthirsty warrior working under C.

    Castor
Another member of the Consortium, possesses the ability to open up portals.
  • The Dragon: He is in on what C is planning and serves as his second-in-command.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: After Melissa is beaten by Ann, Castor steps in to handle her, until his portal suddenly malfunctions and ends up pulling him and Melissa into it and they both end up stranded in the desert.
  • Original Position Fallacy: He takes up on assisting C's Evil Plan to retrieve The Dypheus' Breath once he's convinced obtaining it will grant him a new position within The Consortium and restore his family's status. As Castor later finds out, C never intended on fulfilling the deal, which leads to him and Melissa both getting stranded out in the desert.
  • Symbol Swearing: After realizing C betrayed him, he rants out loud as his words are written in numerous random symbols.
  • Thinking Up Portals: He's able to conjure up portals to open anywhere of his choosing.
  • The Unfought: He personally never engages Ann in battle and instead sends her and Melissa to a suitable fighting area.

    Melissa
Castor's sister/partner, who has the power to control ice.
  • An Ice Person: She's able to conjure ice out of her body, such as granting herself a Double Weapon of hardened-ice, emitting a cold blast to trap Ann in ice, and growing icicle wings to unleash a makeshift hail-storm.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Castor's personal notes mentions his annoyance with her. He finds her as a little deviant since she refuses to talk and is always making a mess of his experiments with her ice powers.
  • Power Gives You Wings: She can give herself wings of ice to also create a hailstorm.
  • The Quiet One: She never speaks at all.

The Factio Pugni

    In General
A group of gangsters operating from the Walter Raleigh, a derelict freighter they somehow keep afloat. Their goons are oftentimes responsible for all manner of crimes and havoc, such as extortion, robberies, and street fights.
  • Neighborhood-Friendly Gangsters: Subverted. They claim to be a righteous group of protectors, when most of the "justice" they met involves robberies, kidnappings, murder, and street fights with unfortunate citizens.
  • White Gangbangers: They are the primary criminal element plaguing Noctis city and other nearby settlements, and they don't seem particularly choosy about who joins them (being a multiracial gang).

    T.R.
The leader of the Factio Pugni gang residing in the Walter Raleigh which floats somewhere near Harbor Town.
  • Construction Vehicle Rampage: While heavily modified and weaponized, the mecha arms he fights Ann with used to be cargo-loading crane arms on the Walter Raleigh.
  • Exact Words: Ayane brings up that he has mecha arms. While not actual robotic arms on his body, he does own enormous mecha arms that are controlled on his ship.

Others

    The Prophet
An unknown data hub equipped with an AI that can speak with humans.
  • The Chessmaster: Being a hyper-intelligent, sentient AI, it's been using its ability to share, manipulate, and spread itself through information networks to try and ensure its continued existence and further its goals through all manner of schemes and machinations. One most relevant to Ann is him alerting Ryan to the existence of N540 and thus, the Circle Consortium, while a side one is the cult that worships it as some sort of mechanical god.
  • The Ghost: It's been mentioned at various times, but it's never fully appears at all. In its old containment cell, all that's left is the case its original terminal/device was on.

    Spoiler Character

Amok

A mysterious being trapped in Hinterland. An ancient superweapon keeps her sealed against a pillar, preventing her from escaping and wreaking untold amounts of destruction to other worlds. Thanks to the Circle Consortium's failed "Gatekeeper" project, she had turned Ann into a conduit of her powers, attempting to use Ann to manifest in earth, free herself, and wreak destruction wherever she goes.

  • The Bad Guy Wins: In the False Ending and the Revised Bad Ending, Amok manages to break free of her prison and Hinterland, to cause The End of the World as We Know It on Earth.
  • Deal with the Devil: She's helpful and amiable to Ann only because they can both benefit from each other. In the revised Good ending of the April 2022 update, she turns on Ann when she trusts Dr. G and tries to sever the connection between Ann, Hinterland, and by extension, Amok.
  • Eldritch Abomination: It's hard to tell what she is, exactly, considering she's from a strange, dangerous dimension very different from earth. Of what we do know from her, is that she usually takes on the form of a humanoid female with an exposed spine and no lower body, or a skeletal version of the Varanus, or, when fused with Ann, a ninja-like humanoid with an exposed midsection—to reveal the black spinal cord and lack of flesh there. And in the bad ending, she appears to Ann as a huge beast.
  • Evil All Along: Prior to the Revised Ending, her exact moral alignment was left up in the air. While undoubtedly powerful and dangerous, it is not clear if she is just a beast operating on Blue-and-Orange Morality or if she's legitimately evil, especially given how Ambiguously Evil the Consortium is. The revised ending makes it clear that Amok is an absolute monster in all senses of the word who wants to destroy every world.
  • Fan Disservice: When fusing with Ann, her "ninja" outfit has the midriff exposed. There is no flesh or muscle there, just an exposed blackened spinal cord.
  • Final Boss: In the revised Good Ending of the April 2022 update. She's not happy when Ann follows Dr. G's advice to seal her away and tries to kill Ann, in order to take her body by force and free herself from her prison.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: She is the Sealed Evil in a Can who Big Bad C is trying to release, and possesses the power and desire to destroy the world.
  • Noodle Incident: Who or what impaled her against a giant pillar with a spear-like superweapon in the first place? The Circle Consortium does not know nor particularly cares unless it can help keep her sealed, and Amok is uninterested in explaining.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Does not take it well when Ann faces off against her to seal Amok away for good, especially when Ann succeeds in doing so.
