Ask the Tropers:
openDC Super Hero Girls episode error Western Animation
Hello. On the recap page for DC Super Hero Girls, there are three episodes that have a slight error. For #DCSuperHeroBoys, #Frenemies, and #SoulSisters, they are incorrectly listed as Season 2. When I tried to change it, I saw that someone incorrectly thought they were Season 2 episodes. Would it be better to change the episodes back to Season 1?
openDiscworld and Disney namespaces
What happened to those namespaces exactly? (Do give a brief explanation, but also include a link to a discussion about this, please)
openRepeated ZCE issues
Trending Toon 1 was once brought up here for having ZCE issues. They went through Edit Banned... but are still making ZCEs, as seen here, as well as indentation issues on the same page a little farther down. Other examples of this are here, here, here's one I'm not even sure is using the trope correctly, here...
They're a prolific editor, so I'm positive there's a lot more examples I didn't catch.
They seem to be trying, but are falling into the habit of just saying "X does this" or similar.
Edited by WarJay77openBad Writing Index
Relatively recent additions to the Bad Writing Index:
- Space Whale Aesop: The results of a character's bad decisions should be logical consequences of those decisions.
- No Ending: While ending on a cliffhanger is fine, ending apropo of nothing will make the audience feel cheated with their investment into your story.
- The War on Straw: Misrepresenting a side you stand against, weather due to a lack of knowledge or you're trying to make it easier to argue against them, is a quick way to piss off people you just misrepresented, and possibly others should the efforts be too hamfisted. Not a direct cause of bad writing, but a frequent component of it nevertheless.
I cut Space Whale Aesop because it was cut 3 times prior. No Ending I'm fairy sure isn't innately bad (as stated it's redundant with Writer Copout which is already listed). The War on Straw note it isn't innately bad writing but symptom.
Since Square Peg, Round Trope became an Administrivia and locked, why not Bad Writing Index? It seems like it has the same potential for misuse forcing unapproved or misused examples.
Bad Writing Index could use a cleanup, at least.
openUser deleting MLAATR examples w/ no reason given
deanna911 appears to be deleting random My Life as a Teenage Robot-related examples on different pages. They've deleted several examples on different pages about Word of God stating Sheldon would have gotten with Jenny (though that might make sense since there's no direct source, their lack of edit reason makes me think there's some kind of shipping agenda going on), and they've also deleted: a Sheldon example from Woobie.Western Animation (which is a YMMV trope so deletions can't be based on opinion), several examples on Characters. My Life As A Teenage Robot (some of which don't even mention the ship) and two MLAATR examples on StalkerWithACrush.Western Animation. I sent them a couple PMs about using edit reasons and not deleting YMMV yesterday, but I haven't gotten a response yet.
Edited by N8han11openPossibly rude comments on TLP draft? (resolved)
This TLP draft has no content, and the title sounds very much like People Sit on Chairs. So it's obviously not a very good concept, or well-executed. But some people have responded with snarky comments that, to me, come off as maybe a little too rude. What if this person is new and doesn't know any better? Wouldn't it feel horrible to write what you think is a good idea only to be met with comments like that? I directed that person to TLP Guidelines, which I think the other people should have done instead of trying to be snarky and cool.
Edited by DrNoPumaopenBizarre Character Page
Characters. The Antagonist literally just says ‘Tyler’ on it, does not seem to be referencing a work, and I have no idea what this page even is. I cutlisted it, but maybe someone can figure out just what is with this page. Andrade 12345 is the one who made it.
Edited by MasterNopenNobody poops question
I noticed it says "lampshades only". Would a creature that doesn't have to poop due to Bizarre Alien Biology be allowed or not?
openFrustrated by lack of discussion. Videogame
I recently bore witness to what, in my mind, is an... overzealous pruning of the That One Boss page for Bloodborne, with one user making the argument that every boss not 100% necessary for game completion is a Bonus Boss, and therefore ineligible for inclusion. And that therefore all DLC bosses are "Bonus Bosses," and so on.
Now, I disagree with this interpretation, for reasons I've laid out on that page's discussion, in addition to the fact that it sure sounds like a lot of semantic trickery. But, when I tried to argue my case there, the user that instigated the original cuts stonewalled me and told me to argue my case on the Cleanup Thread; that they were only following the definition of the trope as listed (which I can't argue they are, if in the most narrow-minded and hamfisted way possible).
So, I did. And there's been no response, either from the party I'm in dispute with or any potential useful third parties.
I guess my question is, what should I do when I don't want to edit-war and would love to try to discuss my issues in a reasonable and respectful way, but the other party simply insists their point of view is correct and denies me the chance to plead my case in either of the two provided fora?
Edited by SpectralTimeopenRefusing to crosswick, ignoring all attempts to discuss
Animeking 1108 launched Casual Assault And Battery a few days ago, and so far it has a whopping three wicks. I've PM'd them about crosswicking and pinged them on the Crosswicking thread to try and get their attention, but nothing- they absolutely refuse to engage with me and refuse to finish their work. Not to mention the fact that they'd ignored all comments on the draft that wasn't example-related and are still editing regularly, so they've been on, they've just been refusing to acknowledge me.
I don't know if they've launched other tropes that haven't been crosswicked, but I'm digging into the launch-list now to see if I can find anything. If I do, I'll update this.
openRandom Spoilers Off Header on the Sonic 2020 Movie Film
Mario1995 added an unmarked spoilers header on Film.Sonic The Hedgehog... for a movie that just came out today. That's most certainly not kosher, right?
openBeyond the Impossible visual novels
The visual novels subpage of Beyond the Impossible has exactly two works on it (though one has multiple examples), and has since its creation in 2012. It just seems unnecessary. Can I merge it with the video games subpage? Or at least move it back to the main page as a folder.
openInteresting pages/links/tips
I'm a fairly new person to tvtropes, so there's a lot of things I don't know plus a lot of things I haven't come across yet. But overall, I've been enjoying the whole process of learning.
I want to ask if there's any fun or interesting or helpful pages/links/tips that I may not know about yet? For example, I've found Canonical List of Subtle Trope Distinctions and I think it's interesting yet helpful since a lot of the time I do have some trouble trying to pin the differences between tropes.
Thanks!
openReal life Wardrobe Malfuction examples
I just did a clean up in Wardrobe Malfunction and noticed there a lot of out of universe examples in the live-action sections, mixed in with the In-Universe ones. Should those be separated? Or even be there at all?
Edited by BlackMage43openRecap page for a single movie? Film
Recap.Sonic The Hedgehog 2020 was made the day the film came out and summarizes the entire plot. I've never seen recap pages for single movies before, and having the entire plot laid out might make people not want to see it. Is it kosher? (It's also not indexed.)
openAC markup glitching in quotes
The [[AC: ]] markup, which is used throughout the wiki for a variety of character quotes, is glitching when combined with the quote markup. See the second quote on Quotes.World Of Silence, with Death's lines. It seems like every use of the AC markup is given an entirely new line.
This is definitely a new problem, but I don't know exactly how recent.
openGirl-Show Ghetto
I don't get it, why did someone remove all of the aversions/"Breaking Out Of The Ghetto" examples from Girl-Show Ghetto?
openWhere to discuss the content of locked pages?
This is not about a request to modify a locked page per se—I know how to do that.
My issue is like this: I noticed a locked page (in this case, Dandere) may need some editing on its definition. Should I discuss it here, as a new thread in Trope Talk, or directly on the Locked Pages thread?
To me, it seems like it, because it's like it's ensuring that no valid examples from recent times are allowed, and as of 2020, only examples from as late as 1995 are. It makes even the 6-month wait time of Overshadowed by Controversy seem tame by comparison. That kinda defeats the point of the trope if you ask me, since there are also plenty of examples from less than 25 years. Even then, I see no such thing written in the description anyway, and NeverLiveItDown.Sword Art Online has its own page, despite the work being only 11-years old.
