Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

The beginning of the entry for The Rock needs rewriting:

  • The Rock features Anti-Villain General Hummel attempting to extort money to distribute to families of soldiers whose deaths went unrecognized and without compensation. However, when it becomes apparent Hummel is bluffing, his chief subordinates Captains Frye and Darrow are most certainly not. The two act swift to remove Hummel from command and eventually kill him while proceeding with the plan to attack San Francisco. Even when it becomes apparent they've lost, Frye and Darrow try to send a rocket at the city armed with poison gas to kill every civilian they possibly can and attempt to kill the 81 tourists they have locked in Alcatraz to ensure a lack of witnesses. Their whole motivation for this is as Darrow sums up himself: "I want my fucking money!"

At first glance, it looks like we're calling the Anti-Villain a Complete Monster.

I think I support Frost, but Damaskinos 'loves' his daughter? He says flat out he doesn't. Quote: "Make no mistake, Nyssa, these blood ties mean nothing to me next to the ascendancy of our race!"

He flat out threatens to kill her when she's upset about the whole Nomak thing. He also treats his whole species as a tool. I think he and Frost can both count.

[tup] for Frost. Undecided on Damaskinos and Drake, though. Can't remember all that much about them, but neither of them seemed as bad as the deacon.

[up][up][up] Thanks for pointing that out; not sure how I misremembered that one. Even with that death threat towards his daughter I doubt Damaskinos stacks up to Frost's level of cruelty, though.

I think the problem for qualifying Damaskinos is that he suffers a lot from his status as an Orcus on His Throne for most of the movie, spending most of his time calmly waiting in his lair. What does he do to compare to Frost? He never massacres vampires purely for his own gain, he doesn't kill his familiars at the drop of a hat, and he never stoops to the level of attacking pregnant women or children. We don't even see him feed on anyone if I recall. We briefly see him wade into a pool of blood, but even there we can't ascertain any victims (it might as well have come from a blood bank and may or may not have been given voluntarily; we know the vampire hierarchy control most of them anyway). He wants to make vampires completely immune and enslave mankind as cattle, accidentally creating a worse breed of vampire in the process? Frost wants to extinguish mankind completely by turning all of mankind into vampires (admittedly not a well-thought out plan on Frost's part, but I don't see either end game as more heinous than the other). The only unique thing is his disregard for Nyssa.

Gonna vote no on Damaskinos. Frost's entry on his character sheet says he cares about Quinn and Mercury, is that true or a misuse of Even Evil Has Loved Ones?

Lightysnake Since: May, 2010

Misuse. One vampire points out Frost doesn't care about Mercury, and when they get scared and flee the ritual, he doesn't Even care he's the one getting all the power. He also doesn't even react to their deaths.

We do see Damaskinos uses blood banks to drain human beings, like how Frost has people lured to his clubs. The Reaper thing is entirely his fault, albeit accidentally

@ Lord Xavius,I can safely say Drake does not count. Drake respected Blade as a warrior and had no real interest in the vampires' plan to conquer the world. He barely did anything in the movie, he killed a few people, but again, since he has no real interest in the vampires plans of conquest, he is not very heinous compared to Frost.

I will say [tup] to Frost though.

I'm gonna let Drake killing those humans slide given how offended he was at the Dracula vibrator thing. He easily doesn't count due to his honor and his he helps Blade at the end.

Frost seems the one keep. I have some other proposals I will out up soon from the anime Psycho Pass as well.

How is this rewrite for The Rock.

  • The Rock features Captains Frye and Darrow attempting to extort money, by threatening San Francisco with Deadly Gas. While their superior Anti-Villain General Hummel wants to distribute the money to families of soldiers whose deaths went unrecognized and without compensation, they only want it for themselves. When it becomes apparent Hummel is bluffing, they act swift to remove Hummel from command and eventually kill him while proceeding with the attack. I made a writeup for Tirac since he was brought up a few pages ago. Now bear with me, while yes, the show he appeared in were normally supposed to be preschool children's shows, it should be noted that the My Little Pony TV Specials that he appeared in were made around the 1980s, a time which is known for having extremely violent cartoons. In fact, at the end of the special, Tirac gets chopped in half by a rainbow, of all things. Anyway, here's the writeup:

  • Tirac, from the My Little Pony TV Specials, is a surprisingly vile creature from a show that's supposed to be a little girl's show. A demon of a centaur, Tirac was the ruler of the Midnight Castle, and planned to send Dream Valley into a state of eternal chaos. To do so, he used a sack containing magical spells in it to essentially torture and transform young ponies into his hideous, winged dragons which he could then use to pull his Chariot of Darkness. He's also amazingly violent. This is shown whenever his henchman Scorpan failed him. He would threaten to have Spike's head cut off if he ever screwed up again, which makes it even more disturbing in that Spike was a child, and therefore it meant that he had no limits to who he had to hurt in order to get his way.

As much as some like to argue about the current generation's villains being Monsters, it really is a different era of animation and none can hold a candle to Tirek/Tirac (is there actually an official way to spell it?). I'm giving a [tup] unless anyone has a strong enough argument why he shouldn't count.

Say, I just recalled a Star Wars villain named Aleema Keto, who's basically the Bellatrix to Exar's Voldemort. I don't know much about her, but I know fans often consider her one of the most loathsome villains in the setting. Anyone know what her deal is?

VeryMelon Since: Jul, 2011 Relationship Status: Anime is my true love
#24194: Apr 13th 2014 at 5:06:27 PM

Aleema Keto was a Human female, the daughter of Lady Magda Keto and niece of the elder Lord Keto, as well as the cousin of Satal Keto. As she progressed down the path of the dark side of the Force, Aleema became a Sith sorceress, gaining proficiency in the arts of Sith magic. She and Satal also co-founded the Krath, a secret dark side society, and together they succeeded in overthrowing the Tetan Monarchy just prior to the Great Sith War.

As co-rulers of the Empress Teta system, Aleema and her cousin instigated the Krath Holy Crusade, the opening battle of which revealed the measure of their Sith powers at work in Tetan space. The Krath then launched a bold ambush against the Jedi during a convocation on the planet Deneba, which resulted in the death of Jedi Master Arca Jeth. In response, his apprentice, the Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma, infiltrated the Krath in an attempt to destroy them from within. Aleema immediately realized his intentions and seduced him while offering him a position within the Krath organization. She then masterminded the death of her cousin Satal at Qel-Droma's hands, at which time the fallen Jedi assumed Satal's position as leader of the Krath.

Together with Qel-Droma, Aleema joined forces with Dark Lord Exar Kun and held position as his senior ally in Kun's Sith Brotherhood. War was waged against the Jedi and the Republic, though during an assault on Coruscant, Keto betrayed Qel-Droma to the enemy. She was later killed by her own actions when she used her Sith powers to cause a massive supernova in the Cron Cluster during the Battle of Kemplex IX, having been tricked into the affair by both Kun and Qel-Droma.

Calling her Exar's Voldemort would be remarkably inaccurate. She barely knew Exar, and her main connection was with Exar's second/partner Ulic Qel-Droma...also, she's less 'loyal' as she is a backstabbing, conniving snake who betrays everyone. I could see her counting. Given she intentionallyblew up a nebula

Yeah, I can really see Aleema counting. She has an enormous body count, betrays everyone and does some hideously petty, cruel things for her own amusement.

Ruthless People

  • Sam is a rare comedic version played absolutely straight. A greedy, cheating, sadistic slimebag utterly devoid of redeeming features, he starts out the movie by telling his mistress of how he married Barbara while her rich father was dying in the hospital to inherit his wealth, and then goes on to describe in loving, longing detail about how he plans to kill her and dump her off a cliff, his only regret being that she will be unconscious and not feel any pain during the act.

[facepalm] Everything in this movie is played for black comedy...

I believe we've discussed Aleema Keto before, and ultimately voted her down because Exar Kun is much worse within the same storyline (case in point: the supernova thing).

Don't quote me on it, though.

[up] Actually, we haven't,really....and I have to protest that reasoning: Aleema is actually more evil on the 'petty' scale, with how she murders people for nothing, show trials with horrific executions, torture, etc...and the supernova thing should be equal to the two of them. Alema committed the supernova attack out of her own free will wen she was drunk with power. Exar knew it would happen, and set it up to, but Aleema bears responsibility for what she did, too.

Let me do an Aleema Keto effort post next.

I have a few propositions:

the first is from the film The Musketeer with the Psycho for Hire Febre, The Dragon to Count Richeliu...except Febre kinda seizes the reins from him and becomes the overarching threat. Febre is seen at the start of the film where he murders D'Artagnan, the hero's, parents when he's a boy, which leads to D'Artagnan taking his eye. D'Artagnan is nearly killed there as well. Febre participates in Richeliu's plot to foment tensions between france, Spain and England to gain Richeliu more power, but he has his own agenda. the man is a mad dog killer who kills very many people, incites a massive riot, and eventually plans to murder the Duke of Buckingham to incite a giant war between France, Spain and England that'll cripple the nation for no reason than his own enjoyment.

When Richeliu obviously protests this insanity, his guard captain tries to stop Febre who cuts him down. When Richeliu tells him he's insane, Febre's response is he's been called insane three times in one night. "It's must be so!"

The next is Mr. Hood from the Clive Barker novel The Thief of Always. Hood runs a seemingly magical house for children: The Holiday House, where kids live happily without having to work....except, it's all an elaborate gingerbread house. Hood feeds on the lives and souls of children to prolong his own life. Hood has been doing this for countless years, devouring the childrens' life force while calling himself The Vampire King. He creates minions to run the house for him, but cares nothing for them, even ripping off the head of one at the end of the book when the guy thinks Hood is dead.

Hood has no good points...he simply wants to remain immortal and powerful.

the next examples are from the show Grimm...there may be others, but these two are the ones who stuck out most. Grimm is a show about a cop who finds out he's one of the last of the Grimm line: humans with special powers who confront the dark creatures among them, called the Wesen

The first is Dr. Levine, a doctor who runs a clinic, and also a Geier: a vulture-like creature. Geier's clinic purports to help runaways, but it's a ruse so she can have them kidnapped and then dissects them for their organs- to sell at a profit. Not much else to say about her: this gives her a very high body count, and it's such a nasty crime.

The second is Oleg Stark, a Siegbarste or Ogre creature, who was locked up in hail for some years for his work as a hitman. He breaks out, beating two guards into a coma. Stark had been in the employ of a man who refused to pay him in gold...so Stark kidnappd his family and tormented them for days. Upon his escape, Stark murders his attorney, cuts out her tongue and leaves it on display. He kills the jury foreperson, then kills the judge by shoving his gavel down his throat. He then goes for the homicide detective who put him away...he assaults an elderly man for his car and blows it up to blow up the detective's residence. He realizes he failed and assaults the detective's best friend, putting him in the hospital (the hero was only saved by hank's intervention)

Now, before going further, I should note a huge point of Grimm is that 'monsters' are not bound by their nature. One of the heroes is a Blutbad (think a werewolf being) named Monroe, who's a sweet, cuddly guy who never hurts anyone and is one of the heroes (and...quite honestly, should be the main character). One episode with a spider-like monster who eats men made her a Tragic Monster while another of the same race refrained from indulging in her urges. No issues with agency, at all. Levine and Stark also kill for revenge and profit...entirely human motivations.

I've also seen The Raid 2: Berandal and I think the villain Bejo is a good contender for the list, but I'll wait to discuss him. [up]
