Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

"For me, my saturation point happened when the giant naked woman made of troll intestines achieved orgasm after being stabbed with The Hero's sword." Big "WHAT?!"\\ But yeah, Berserk's Monsters seem like real pieces of work (Ganishka seems like the least monstrous of the three).

[up] And that includes Dark Fics. I still maintain that dropping things like serial killers into a Sugar Bowl like that is in and of itself intended to be funny, if only to the person who writes it.

I agree with that. And as a corollary, I'm not too pleased with these examples of tropers writing a fanfic so that a character they think is/should be a Complete Monster will qualify.

[up] I recall at least one instance of someone submitting the villain of their own fic. That honestly felt kinda weird to me, so I didn't participate in the discussion.

Gamaran

  • Complete Monster: Ryuugo Daimaru, also the Daimyo Naosada Washizu. The second part of the Unabara tournament involves a fierce battle amongst the ten surviving Ryuu. In order to win they must kill one of his sons and bring his head as proof. Understandably, his sons weren't amused.
    • Sasuke Sakakibara. A kid who slaughtered all his colleagues to test his spear and get the place. He comments on how easily it was to tear out a man's heart from his chest.
    • Jinsuke Kurogane. According to Nachi, of all the martial artists he's seen so far, he's both the strongest and the most wicked. Many people liken him to a devil. He also killed the majority of the Ogame school merely because they didn't side with his somewhat noble cause of waiting to have martial arts not die out in the age of peace, as well as having no hesitance about wanting to kill his son/
    • Mario Kujou: At least, Jinsuke sincerely believed in what he was doing when he killed his allies in order to maintain swordsmanship, but Mario wanted political power, so he backstabbed not only his Ogame allies, but his fellow Muhyo aides in his ambitions. Plus, he has no honor, something even the most depraved people like Muraku or Jinsuke had, having his guards ambush Kai during their fight. In a series filled with fighters who dedicate themselves to the sacred grounds of battle, Mario stands out as a manipulative mastermind using his allies for stepping stones and using dirty tricks to win fights.

Mario's entry doesn't say much about what he does, just that he has no redeeming traits. Also, it claims that Jinsuke had honor.

I thought My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic cannot have any CM characters. I mean, seriously, Mane-iac wants give the cast bad hair?! I'm kind of impressed with the bronies for their steadfast willingness to have an antagonist named as a CM. [tdown] Thanks for playing.

The book version of Smaug is most certainly [tdown] and I don't think the film version has done enough to qualify, as he's more of a force of nature than pure evil such as Sauron. So [tdown] for that version as well.

Quickly for others in question:

  • J is a [tup].
  • Gamaran's Jinsuke and Mario are [tup] but need to be expanded. Further information regarding Sasuke and Ryuugo should be added before I make a final decision.
  • Volgin and Sundowner are both [tup].
  • Finally, now that I know which Galilei Donna villain has been identified as a candidate, I'll take some time to find out if he's a [tup] or a [tdown].

Stay tuned! (EDIT: Had to ninja.)

From Gasaraki, the ancestor's entry seems to make it clear he's onscreen. Gakuen Alice looks like a keep. I'll trust A New Man here.

The Feng Shui examples I'm willing to allow there as it's Tabletop.

I did some research, so I can do expansions.

  • Gun×Clover
    • Angel Valentine shows he's a nasty customer by ambushing the heroine Kotonoha and tying her down before sexually assaulting her. He gleefully enjoys seeing her struggle and shifting through her multiple personalities until she realizes she's helpless. Later, he decides to murder two girls he was in charge of protecting solely to piss off Kotonoha's escort Morito by presenting him with their dismembered arms.
    • Morito's master. She's openly talks about using children as experiments and making them into soldiers, and has no problems with getting rid of them when they outlive their use. One of experiments with children is so she could gain the ability to use "Dead Language", she used 10000 subjects as guinea pigs, of whom 90 percent died or were incapacitated. When an experiment was successful she would chop the limbs of those that it worked on, and graft it onto herself.

    • Rando from the Getter Robo series was an Evil Overlord whose mission was to Take Over the World even if he had to kill every last human on it. Starting with mass-murder, Rando forcibly converted his victims to mindless killing machine cyborgs and unleashed them on the rest of humanity. He had no compunction using nuclear weapons on city as well, all borne out of his desire to rule the world.

Need to research Gamaran

After spending a few minutes reading about Roberto from Galilei Donna, he has most certainly crossed the Moral Event Horizon by massacring civilians and killing his own adopted father. However, Episode 6 paints him as more as someone who crossed the Despair Event Horizon when he was a child than a person who's been evil since day one.

He was shown to be kind when he was a kid. Although he comes from a wealthy family, he, along with his parents, have shared their food with the homeless. On his birthday, for example, their family were planning a feast when his father decided to bring food to the hungry homeless. All that was left was a slice of cake, which Roberto decided to cut it into three parts. He only became evil when he was adopted by a mobster after his parents were killed by homeless thugs bombing their mansion.

Given Episode 6's details, has Roberto since crossed the DEH and the MEH? Absolutely. Is he a Complete Monster, though? No. With these details, I thus say Roberto is a [tdown].

- C'mon, don't just... ninja edit the damn entry! Do something, Sanfran!

I hate to bring this up again, but I really want to know the final verdict on Dag from Barnyard. I've been patiently waiting for an answer, and so far, I've gotten approval from fellow contributor Lightysnake. The rewrite I proposed was written back on page 813. Also, I have no ill feelings for bronies, but yeah...that sounded really dumb.

Okay, better overview of the Feng Shui examples:

  • Curtis Boatman, one-man reason that the Architects of the Flesh are unplayable. He's the source of basically everything wrong with the 2056 juncture that isn't his ostensible boss' fault, from Abominations to the surveillance state. Unlike his boss, he is about as far from sympathetic as possible-he's described in-game as a bloated, corrupt, and utterly selfish jerk whose own motive is his own profit, and is personally responsible for several sadistic experiments. His laundry list of crimes included the Uber-kids, tricking normal people into accepting The Corruption of Arcanotech and then accelerating it deliberately so he can have perfectly loyal Super Soldiers, keeps an entire greenhousse complex of Black Market Produce for himself (even his boss, Bonengel, puts his money where his mouth is and buys real food honestly), plans to betray Bonengel because Boatman likes the Crapsack World with himself at the top of the pyramid as it is (and Bonengel had a Heel Realization a few years before and has become Necessarily Evil), and despite the Buro wanting equality at all costs, he's a huge bigot responsible for the rampant homophobia in the 2056 juncture. Most damming of all is the Fisher Kingdom aspect of chi mastery over a juncture-2056 under Architect rulership is his ideal world. Look at the utterly dystopian future and realize what that says about him.
  • Ming I, the worst of the Four Monarchs. She's a user of warped shadow magic who willingly replaced her arm with an Artifact of Doom to hurt people more, knowing full well she'd effective be urged to render people Deader than Dead. In her native timeline, she ruled over the Aztecs and then took the Human Sacrifice thing to heights even they found abhorrent, learning how to use the blood of virgins to extend her youth, only being allowed to remain because she cowed them into believing she was a god who killed or enslaved all of theirs. What puts her in the rank of Boatman up above, however, is three little words: Industrialized Mind Rape.
