Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Muco. How many does this make for Ironside? I know he's got DCAU!Darkseid, and I feel like at least a few others as well.

"T-abyss... T-virus, Las Plagas, C-Virus" Good lord. Just how many viruses are there? [lol] I'm staying out of the discussion, as I'm not too familiar with the franchise. Just let me know what I need to do with the page.

I'll abstain on Colm.

So that I don't forget about these when I do the main Gundam de-potholing, here are 2 now, per 43110's request.

  • Yazan Gable is a warmonger who goes so far to admit that he joined the Titans' military so he could legally kill members of the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG). He has no interest in the rules of warfare, murders solely because he is good at it, and gladly participates in the Grenada Colony Drop, knowing it would have killed thousands of civilians and seeing it as an opportunity to shoot down anyone who tries to defend Grenada. When a superior officer tries to stop a pointless battle, Yazan takes this as a hindrance to his bloodlust and arranges for the officer to die at the hands of an AEUG pilot. When Paptimus Scirocco betrays the Titan leadership, Yazan does so as well, out of his belief in fighting for the strongest military power. In the finale, Yazan leaves his mark on the show's tragic take on war when he goes on a savage killing spree, leaving numerous major heroic characters dead and even murdering some of his own allies. With a series of expies in the franchise, Yazan is a blight upon his world, more of a feral predator than a man.
  • Captain Bask Om, the second-in-command of the Titans, has the backstory of being horrifically tortured during the last war, yet this still doesn't come close to justifying his brutality or making him seem any more sympathetic a character. Bask is first seen beating the tar out of one of his officers for opposing his order—an order which risked civilian lives. Later, Bask has Kamille Bidan's mother, Hilda, put in a capsule in outer space without a spacesuit in order to retrieve the Gundams stolen by the AEUG, and orders one of his men to shoot at it, claiming the capsule contains a bomb, leading to her heart-wrenching death. He subsequently orders two massive colony gassings. He is also the man responsible for the Titans' brutal treatment of the colonies in the first place, favoring the seizure and murder of hostages to get people to go along with his plans, and being a major proponent of the use of Cyber-Newtypes, teenage super soldiers created through Mind Rape and a cocktail of Psycho Serum.

This is an entry I made for All The Tropes Wiki, and I made the entry and therefore I approve of it being on this and the other site too.

Venom (2018 Film): Carlton Drake is the founder and CEO of the Life Foundation, who wishes to help humanity survive through evolution. After finding the symbiotes of Kyntar in a comet, Drake has four of them sent back to Earth, risking the lives of the astronauts who found them and resulted in one of the symbiotes breaking free and killing and possessing one and escaping. Drake then after seeing symbiosis is possible with life on Earth, ignores all ethics and human rights and conducts human trials by abducting homeless people from the streets and bonding them with symbiotes, threatening the safety of Dr. Skirth's family when she objects, and having a complete Lack of Empathy as they scream and die horrible deaths. He keeps up a friendly and charismatic demeanor towards visitors and children, but in actual fact is just an arrogant and pompous sociopath who acts like an angry child when things don't go his way and hates humanity and believes he is doing God's work after he abandon them. This uncaring nature causes Skirth to pull a Heel-Face Turn and breaks Eddie into the Life Foundation to try and expose Drake for the monster he is. After finding out one of his symbiotes is missing, he coldly tells his scientists to get rid of Maria's corpse (the symbiote's former host and a friend of Eddie's), calling her an 'it' in disgust, and manipulates Skirth into selling out Eddie and sends his Dragon Treece after him, then sets up Skirth to be bonded and killed by one of the symbiotes. Drake then bonds with other Big Bad Riot and plans to use their rocket to go to Klyntar and come back with an army of symbiotes and invade and populate it to fulfill his twisted vision of evolution and salvation. Truly a cruel, twisted and hypocritical bastard who accuses everyone else of having flaws yet never acknowledging his own.

De-potholings (the first one also goes to both the Transformers and Joe subpages; the latter also to the Joe subpage):

  • Transformers/G.I. Joe, by John Ney Rieber: Cobra Commander continues to prove himself capable of being an irredeemable psychopath when it comes to adaptations of his original iteration. With Cobra serving as a stand-in for the Nazi Party, Commander runs his empire with the same cruel egomania that the Nazis were known for. After discovering the Decepticons hidden in an ancient monastery whose inhabitants he has just had slaughtered, Commander forcefully takes control of the Decepticons and forces them to lay waste to numerous countries across Europe, including Berlin and Rome. Any survivors of these massacres, including the children, are forced into slave camps, and, later, used as human shields against the Commander's enemies. After forcing a Decepticon to exhaust all his energy in wantonly laying waste to enemies and allies alike, the Commander reveals his plan to use the Decepticons to institute a new world order under his rule where only the strong will survive and serve under his thumb. Cobra Commander is a megalomaniac whose status as a stand-in for the Nazi leadership makes him one of the most realistic, and wicked, baddies throughout the G.I. Joe franchise.

  • G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra & Retaliation:
    • Once a U.S. soldier, Rex Lewis was apparently killed in a failed mission, but survived, secretly joining James McCullen's MARS Industries to research advanced nanotechnology, adopting the alias "The Doctor". Testing the mind-control application of this technology on his sister, Ana, the Doctor brainwashed her into aiding in his and McCullen's crimes for the next four years. Under McCullen, the Doctor developed the Neo-Vipers, brainwashed super-soldiers meant to do his bidding, and whom he horrifyingly killed if they were captured. After aiding McCullen's plan to wipe out four heavily populated cities, the Doctor used Ana as a hostage to cover his escape from the G.I. Joes, attempting to kill the Joes and his own allies alike as he fled. Betraying McCullen and taking control of MARS (which he refashioned as Cobra), the Doctor forced him into servitude, dubbing McCullen "Destro" and taking the identity of Cobra Commander for himself and seeking to Take Over the World. Escaping from prison in Retaliation, and abandoning Destro in the process, Commander orders Zartan, disguised as the President of United States, to wipe out the G.I. Joes, resulting in nearly all of their deaths. At a summit of world leaders, Cobra Commander reveals Project Zeus, a Kill Sat that he intends to use to hold the world hostage. As a demonstration of Project Zeus's power, Commander orders Zartan to activate it, destroying London in the process. When the surviving Joes interfere with this plan, Cobra Commander sets Project Zeus to destroy each continent's most highly populated cities to cover his own escape, abandoning his allies in the process.
    • The aforementioned Zartan, Cobra Commander's right-hand man, is a sadistic Psycho for Hire who gleefully takes part in Cobra's schemes. Helping to steal nanite warheads for MARS Industries, Zartan takes great pleasure in murdering any G.I. Joes who get in his way, notably stabbing Cover Girl through the back and taunting Storm Shadow for his refusal to kill women. Escaping from the Joes' headquarters, Zartan murders an innocent traveler for a disguise. At the end of the film, Zartan captures and impersonates the President of the United States. In Retaliation it is revealed that, when Storm Shadow was a child, Zartan murdered his uncle, framed Storm Shadow for it, and corrupted him into a life of crime, all for no discernible reason. While impersonating the President, whom he regularly tortures for information, Zartan orders Storm Shadow to assassinate the President of Pakistan, sparking a civil war and framing the Joes for it, as part of a plan to free Cobra Commander from prison. On Cobra Commander's orders, Zartan orders an attack on the Joes, killing all but a few of them, and cheerfully tests Project Zeus on London, annihilating the city. In the end, after Storm Shadow turns on Zartan and calls him out for the murder of his uncle, Zartan simply taunts him before trying to kill him.

lightly you have a profile pic. It looks good.

Also [tdown] to colm

[up]I always felt this film version of cobra commander was interesting. He's got an FE which explains how he started on the path of evil but has bugger to do with his current actions which is why he keeps.

Actually could Destro himself be worth an ep. Like he planned on killing 4 entire cities and the horrific experiments by "The Doctor" where organised by him. I don't remember him having any redeeming qualities either though it's been awhile.

[up][up][up] I weirdly caught a bit of the end of that damn first film a while back. I dunno. Destro might have had some redeeming qualities but I can't remember if he some reason for doing what he was doing. And I feel his relationship with the Baroness isn't enough to DQ him due to her being brainwashed.

But I think he might be worth it for someone more familiar with those films. Like, he gets screwed over hard, but he had it coming, CM or no.

Tally on Colm

[tdown] 5

[tup] 4

Anyways Heres Sebastian's writeup.

  • Hollow Man: Dr. Sebastian Caine started out as a charismatic but egoistical head scientist leading a project to test an invisibility serum. After a successful run, he lies to his superiors about the project to continue with human experiments, using himself as a geunia-pig to see what it was like. Initially passing the time with pranks on his colleagues, he gradually gives in to his darker inhibitions he hinted at early on, by molesting his female colleagues and eventually raping his attractive neighbour whom he constantly spied on, reasoning no one would know. Growing more unhinged and reckless, Caine batters a dog to death when he learns his ex-girlfriend and colleague Linda is now in a relationship with fellow colleague Matt. When his mentor Kramer is told about his activities, Caine murders him and decides to kill off his staff and set the facility to explode; during which he leaves one to bleed to death; manhandles one to shoot herself before breaking her neck and locks Linda and Matt in a rapidly cooling freezer, making final attempts to kill them when they escape.

I think I'm gonna take a crack at #2 now. Again, going mostly on memory and research here:

What is the work?

Whiteout is a not very good 2009 thriller that I ended up seeing in the theater with a group (including my brother and (foster) brother) because we got the showtimes for Jennifer's Body wrong. It revolves around U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko being stationed at a site in Antarctica and having to investigate murders that occur there under mysterious circumstances. The circumstances eventually reveal themselves though.

Who is he and what has he done?

Russell Haden is an Australian biologist who is also stationed at the site. He and a small group are out exploring and discovering diamonds in a crashed plane begin a plan to smuggle them. Haden enlists Dr. John Fury to help with this personally and plans to betray his partners in order to get even more of them for himself.

Haden dons a ski mask and resorts to targeting and killing his partners in order to get those with knowledge of the diamonds out of the way. First, he uses his signature ice-ax to stab Anton Weiss and throw his body out of a plane. Later, he stabs John Mooney in the throat and lets him bleed out, leaving him for dead. While Carrie is investigating, he relentlessly tries to kill her too. She successfully escapes, but loses two fingers due to frostbite in the process.

Eventually, the third man Michael Rubin is targeted. Haden drags him outside to kill him and when he loses track of his weapon, Haden just resolves to corner him and break his neck. Haden escapes after being captured and stabs and nearly kills Carrie's associate Delfy. In his attempt to escape, he tries to kill Carrie outside again during the storm. Robert Pryce (another investigator) interferes and Haden tries to kill him too. In one of my favorite villain deaths though, the harness the three use to travel snaps during the struggle and Haden falls on the ground and is sucked away into the storm a long ways away from civilization and salvation.

Heinous standard?

Kills three and tries to kill three. He is the only hands-on killer. It's also not simply the kills themselves, but the manner in which he does them. He's partial to the ice-ax, which is painful and it's made perfectly clear he is not picky about the way he kills either.

Redeeming qualities? Mitigating factors?

Fury clearly feels guilty about what transpires while Haden doesn't at all. Haden likely only kept Fury around too out of necessity. Fury puts it best: "I never meant for anyone to get hurt, but Haden got greedy."

Verdict?

I think that's enough to muster a [tup].
