Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up] I mean I will agree that there is too much ambiguity to upvote him now but I don't really see the idea that we shouldn't use the Japanese version as in the past we have been perfectly willing to judge different dubs, translations or cuts for a potential CM I don't really see how this would be different. Especially since technically speaking the Japanese version is the original one.

Yes to Arnulf.

Gonna have to say no to Forgo given that they don't meet baseline heinous standard (didn't one Kirby villain attempt to commit universal omnicide?) on the one hand, they might get redeemed, and have very dodgy moral agency otherwise. It's like getting someone from Kingdom Hearts to count!

  • Shadow Man, by Cody McFadyen:
    • Jack Jr.—Peter Hillstead—believes himself to be a descendant of Jack the Ripper, and seeks to immortalize himself in history even more so than his ancestor. Trained to torture and kill at a young age by his Serial Killer father, Jack Jr. gleefully assisted his dad in his crimes. After murdering his father, partially because he believed him to be an inadequade descendant of the Ripper, compared to himself, Jack Jr began raping and killing over the years. Regularly manipulating people into murdering others for him, Jack Jr. wastes no time in betraying and killing his acolytes when he grows tired of them, and he used one of them to ensure the deaths of FBI agent Smoky Barrett's husband and young daughter. Declaring Barrett his nemesis, Jack Jr. spent hours torturing and raping Barrett's childhood friend while forcing her 10 year-old daughter, Bonnie, to watch. Jack Jr. then tied Bonnie to the eviscerated corpse of her mother and left her there for 3 days, the resulting trauma causing the girl to become mute. Next, Jack Jr. begins specifically torturing members of Barrett's task force, with methods such as digging up and defiling the corpse of one agent's sister, and chopping off the legs of another agent's dog. When his identity is revealed, Jack Jr. kidnaps one of Barrett's friends, tortures her, then tries to slash Bonnie's throat open while using her as a Human Shield. Though manipulated by his father into killing, Jack Jr. chose to continue his spree even after his father was removed from the picture and his mother tried to redeem him. Happily embracing his dark side while simultaneously preaching his victims are nothing but cattle, Jack Jr. embodied and evolved the legacy of The Ripper.

Like, yikes, even for a guy as fucking horrrible as Jack Jr., this is unwieldy for a one novel villain [lol]

Time for a new proposal.

What's the work?

The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness is a YA fantasy series which takes place in prehistoric times where there are no cities and the people live in clans, build tents to live in, and feed themselves by hunting with spears and arrows and picking up fruits and other edible stuff. However, there are some fantasy elements which we will talk about.

The main character is Torak who is a Spirit Walker which means he can transfer his spirits in the bodies of other creatures and control them. His best friends are Wolf (because Torak can speak the language of the wolves) and a girl named Renn from the Raven Clan. The villains of the series are a group of 7 Mages called the Soul Eaters. At first, they wanted to help other people and heal them but as time went on, they grew more power-hungry and started desiring total control over the Forest.

Who is Thiazzi? What has he done?

Thiazzi is the Oak Mage of the now deceased Oak Clan. He is the most violent and sadistic of all the Soul Eaters and he enjoys tormenting other creatures weaker than him.

He first appears in the third book, where he and three female Soul Eaters (Seshru, Eostra and Nef) capture a group of predators and plan to sacrifice them in a ritual, so that they can unleash a horde of demons on the world and subjugate all people to their will. During this time, Thiazzi steps on Wolf's tail for no reason and breaks it and for that reason Torak is later forced to cut it off when they rescue him.

When that plan fails and Nef redeems herself by sacrificing her life to stop the horde of demons, Thiazzi, Seshru and Eostra escape.

He reappears in the fifth book where he murders Bale (another friend of Torak) to steal a Fire Opal. He then runs into the Deep Foret and Torak, Renn and Wolf chase him. It is revealed that during the previous months he had been sowing discord among the clans of the Deep Forest and is responsible for the war between them. He killed the Deep Forest Horse Mage, took his place and blamed the Aurochs for the murder. He also killed the Auroch Mage who lived outside his clan in a secluded way and took his place as well, playing both sides of the conflict.

He also reintroduces old practices such as the punishment of cutting off hands. Thiazzi also kidnaps a number of children to turn them into tokoroths. This process is horrifying as the Soul Eater traps the child inside a hole in the ground and gives it just barely enough food and water to keep them alive. Once the child has become an empty husk of itself, the Soul Eater summons a demon and traps it inside the child's body and from now on the newly created tokoroth can only follow its master's orders.

Thiazzi also takes advantage of a mentally ill woman and uses her to do his bidding. He commands her to start a huge fire in the forest and then frames Torak for it and attempts to have him executed. Thiazzi then accuses the Open Forest for all the problems that have befallen the Deep Forest in the previous books (even though those problems were actually caused by his fellow Soul Eaters and Thiazzi knows that) and convinces the Deep Forest clans to wage war on the Open Forest with Thiazzi as the new leader.

He then captures Renn, traps her inside a hollow tree and tries to suffocate her by pouring smoke inside the tree through small cracks, planning to lure Torak this way. When Torak arrives, Thiazzi tells him that he is going to release Renn if Torak submits to his will. When Torak does this, Thiazzi reveals he had lied and tries to murder him but in the process he falls from the tree and dies while his whole body is burning, ignited by a stray spark.

Mitigating Factors

It is mentioned that his entire clan has died at one point but there is no indication he cares about them or that he is motivated by their deaths. Also, this story is not even told by Thiazzi himself but by another person.

There is also no indication he cares for his fellow Soul Eaters beyond working with them to achieve common goals and in the fifth book he betrays Eostra and tries to take over the Forest all by himself without including her in his plans.

He, along with the other Soul Eaters, claims that they are Well-Intentioned Extremists who want to unite the clans of the Forest and help them by showing them the Old Way because this is what the World Spirit would approve. However, all this talk is just making excuses for why they should be in charge of everyone and those intentions aren't treated as genuine. I will provide two quotes that prove my point:

Nef: You want to know why we're doing this.

Seshru: Why are we going to open the Door? Why are we going to let out the demons?

Thiazzi: To rule. To unite the clans and rule.

Torak: But the clans rule themselves.

Nef: Much good is does them. Have you never asked yourself why the World Spirit is so fickle, so unpredictable? Why does it send the prey at some times, but not others? Why does it kill one child with sickness, but spares another? Because the clans don't live as they should!

Thiazzi: They have different ways of sacrificing, of sending their Dead on the Journey. This displeases the World Spirit.

Nef: There's no order to it.

And this.

Thiazzi: My power is greater than yours! See, even the fire obeys me! But since the World Spirit has delivered you into my hands, I shall add your power to my own.

Torak: How can the World Spirit be on your side? Killing hunters! How can that please the Spirit?

Thiazzi: To offer a hunter to the fire is to give it the noblest death of all. It is the Way.

Torak: It's not the clans' way, and it's not your Forest.

Thiazzi: I am the Master! I have taken the Deep Forest for my own!

Torak: The war between the clans. You started it. You set them against each other. You planted the curse sticks. You murdered the Forest Horse Mage and blamed it on the Aurochs. You made them fight.

Thiazzi: They wanted to fight. They needed to fight! The clans are weak. They've forgotten the True Way, but I will unite them. That's why the World Spirit gave this land to me: to root out differences, to return the clans to the Way! No more clan guardians, no more clan Mages. One way. One Forest. One Leader!

If that isn't enough, he also constantly refers to himself as "The Master of the Forest". It should also be noted that he wins the Deep Forest clans for his cause by telling them blatant lies about who caused their problems and he is the one who sows discord among the clans even though he claims to be "uniting" them.

Heinous standard

Some of the other Soul eaters set it pretty high.

Tenris, Torak's evil uncle, attempted to spread a decease throughout the entire forest, created a demonic bear which ran rampant through the forest and killed a lot of people (including Torak's father), tests said decease on children, kidnaps two children to turn into tokoroths and tries to sacrifice his own nephew in a ritual. He doesn't qualify because in his last moments it is revealed that he cares about his nephew to an extent despite trying to kill him.

Seshru attempted to turn her own children into tokoroths, participated in the plot to unleash demons against the Forest, indirectly started a flood and tried to kill her own daughter, Renn, when she recognized her years later. She doesn't count because apparently there are sequel books where she appears as a ghost and gives some helpful advice to her daughter.

Eostra also uses tokoroths, participates in the plot to unleash demons and tries to steal the powers of Torak by leaving his soul in eternal torment but she just fails the heinous standard to her fellow Soul Eaters.

The other Soul Eaters are not really worth mentioning.

However, what sets Thiazzi apart is that in addition to his other crimes, he attempted to start a war throughout the entire Forest, so that he can conquer everything and rule as the new Master.

Conclusion

A keeper.

I completely forgot about it until recently, but a few years ago I suggested Blaine O'Malley (initial Effort Post) from the webcomic Dumbing of Age as a potential complete monster.

It was rightfully pointed out to me that the storyline was ongoing, and that we needed to wait until it was resolved.

Since then, Blaine actually killed Ross, Becky's father, because the latter freed Amber, enraging him in the process. When things go out of his control, he uses Walky as an hostage and run off with a knocked out Joyce after Walky manages to get free, despite getting a chance to surrender by Dorothy. When he is finally stopped by Amber, his own daughter, she rips him a new one and calls him out for all the shit he did.

His answer to that is a smug "You're welcome."

Blaine is eventually captured by the police and taken to an hospital, in which a Dirty Cop killed him, staging his death as suicide (long story short: Blaine was part of the local mafia, threatened the Don's grandson, and overall was too much of an insane loose cannon to be left alive).

Also, Mike, whom he fought against and was directly responsible for him ending up in an hospital bed, ultimately dies from his injuries after a timeskip.

Not once does Blaine expresses remorse for his actions (which include multiples kidnappings, blackmailing, assault, attempted murder on children, caused the death of a child and an actual on-screen murder of an adult). To the very end, he remains in denial and twists the truth to fit his own narrative (mostly to bolster his own ego), like when at the very end he denies that Amber is actually Amazi-girl (he did finally recognize that they were the same person earlier when she confronted him), not to protect her, but because it bruises his ego (the ego thing was explicitely explained in a strip that I can't find right now), going as far as saying to a cop to destroy his daughter's life by telling others she is "Amazi-girl" if he thinks "it'd land her in jail."

I can add more details if necessary, or redo the complete Effort Post. Granted, it has been a while since I read the comic, so I would need to dig a bit.

As far as potentially mitigating factors go, you have this strip in which he expresses twisted feelings of pride for shaping Amber into what she became (ie. a very broken and traumatized individual with anger and violence issues, similar to him). Considering the context, and the fact that Amber rejects what he says... I'll let you appreciate.

Yes to Arnulf and Thiazzi, no to Fecto, and [up]x8 I'd do an updated EP for Blaine just to be safe.

One more from A Practical Guide to Evil for now, this time from what can be considered the Ensemble Dark Horses of the series: the drow.

The Empire Ever Dark was once a mighty underground nation, ruled by the Twilight Sages. Unfortunately, the Sages' fear of death led to them making a deal with the Gods of the Hells, allowing them to steal life from future generations of children to make the drow immortal.

This wouldn't have been a problem if they hadn't also picked a war with the dwarves, who are OP as hell. With a bunch of their cities wiped out, suddenly all those future generations... you know, didn't exist, leaving the Sages in a bit of a sticky situation. Once more faced with mortality, they decided to take inspiration from their former student — the Dead King — to make themselves undead gods.

By killing the rest of the drow race.

Two sisters, Andronike and Komena, realized what the Sages were planning and killed them, using them as sacrifices to contact the Gods Below in hopes of renegotiating the deal in a way that didn't end with their entire race dead once the remaining stolen life runs out. There they met the Gods' messenger, the eldritch monstrosity known as the Wandering Bard, who provided their shitty but only remaining option. Basically, the entire race would become a sacrificial altar to Below, devolving into a society of murderous madmen who would constantly slaughter each other, with each death acting as a sacrifice to the strange magic known as the "Night" to keep the race alive. If you kill more people you can take their share of Night, become more powerful, live longer, and even steal certain skills/knowledge. It's pretty shit, but at least they didn't go extinct.

The sisters, becoming lesser gods in all but name, took up the title of Sve Noc and enforced this kill or be killed society, all the while trying to turn themselves into true gods so their race's debt with Below could finally be wiped clean.

Who is Kurisov the Leech?

A noble from the glory days of the Empire Ever Dark, Kurisov met with Sve Noc's Dragon, Rumena, on his way to capture the Twilight Sages on behalf of the sisters. While instructed by said Sages to stop Rumena, Kurisov instead realized the broad strokes of what they were planning — plunging the Everdark into war — and let Rumena's army pass, intending to take over the drow in the subsequent chaos.

As the Everdark descended into murder and mayhem, Kurisov learned two important abilities: how to come Back from the Dead, and how to use his Night to empower his followers. Whenever his followers die his power flows back to him… along with a portion of their own Night. For this latter ability, Rumena dubbed him a "Leech."

Throughout the next few centuries it (the drow concept of gender kind of deteriorates, the only important distinction between individuals is who has more Night) and Rumena clashed, the latter sent by Sve Noc to stop the Leech from becoming too powerful. Each battle ended with Kurisov dead only to somehow return and amass another army. Although Rumena generally has better troops, Kurisov's favored tactic is to simply gather a massive horde of followers and throw them wave after wave until Rumena's soldiers are all dead, allowing it to gorge itself on their Night by the thousands. As such, with every fight, Kurisov gets stronger and stronger, forcing Rumena to pull out more destructive tricks. In their seventh fight, Kurisov reveals it's made an alliance with other drow warlords — fearful of Rumena's aforementioned destructive power — to kill it, forcing it to flee into exile in the outer fringes of the Everdark once it slays Kurisov once more.

Fast-forward to the present day and this insolent little shit named Catherine Foundling has convinced Sve Noc to help her go to war with the Dead King, with the entire drow population making an exodus aboveground. While they still don't like it, the uber-powerful/useful Kurisov (now calling itself "The All-Knowing" with its cult and god-complex swelling in size) accompanies them as one of their leading generals, once again utilizing his trick of just throwing thousands of soldiers at the undead to whittle the enemy down and empower himself.

Fast-forward a little more, and Sve Noc almost has their control over Night usurped by the Dead King, forcing them to damage the magic in order to stop him. Kurisov, having the second greatest claim to the Night through the power it's accumulated throughout the centuries, pounces on this weakness to declare itself the god Loc Ynan (Fate-Giver) and sways to its side two other generals dissatisfied with the new status quo of not being allowed to kill each other for the slightest reason. Sve Noc are unable to just kill it since, because of the aforementioned "second greatest claim" thing and the Night's current weakness, doing so would collapse the Night and kill them all. With a drow civil war underway, it makes a deal with the Dead King, promising to pull them out of the war in exchange for nine years left alone to get off the continent while he finishes murdering everyone else.

...At least, that's what Kurisov told its followers. In truth, the Dead King give it a variation of the ritual he used to ascend to godhood. I.e. the one the Twilight Sages wanted to use. I.e. the one that required the genocide of the entire drow race. So... not good. Kurisov ramps up its devouring of Night, slowly usurping Sve Noc's godhood piece by piece, and chaining hundreds of drow to massive sacrificial altars so they can be drained of power for the ritual. Either Sve Noc's forces attack and feed him more Night through slain followers, completing his ascension to godhood; or they wait and let him finish the ritual, completing his ascension to godhood.

Cat comes by to deal with Kurisov, and during their fight the Leech manages to kill Sve Noc by stabbing Cat (their vessel) so as to completely drain the Night from her. With its rivals dead, Kurisov begins the ritual to become a god...

Only for a small problem to emerge. You see, Cat doesn't know anything about magic. That's why she has two of the most accomplished mages of her generation as her friends, who redirect the flow of Night and drain Kurisov into a barely-alive husk. It looks up to see one of Cat's drow friends standing above it with a spear.

"Kurosiv," I gurgled. "Hey, Kurosiv."
They flicked a glance my way.
"Rumena tells you that makes eight," I grinned, all teeth and blood.

With no Night left to call on for its age-old trick, the Leech finally meets its fate, and Sve Noc is reborn from the ashes.

Heinousness?

As covered with Triumphant, the heinous standard is pretty jacked. Thousands regularly die in warfare, the Dread Empire is home to thousands upon thousands of horrific atrocities — literally the least evil thing they do is hold annual mass sacrifices to grow crops in their desert environment — and even angels are prone to genocide or mass-brainwashing. The drow themselves are the epitome of this: an entire civilization built on murder and theft of power; tribes constantly attempting to wipe out their neighbors; and anyone, regardless of gender or age, is in danger of being killed at a moment's notice for a useful skill or extra scrap of Night.

Kurisov played a major part in all this. Not only did it allow the Everdark to erupt into brutal warnote , it was also one of the most prominent warlords of the subsequent era of madness, intentionally sacrificing as many followers as it could to gain more power. The deal with the Dead King only makes it worse, as it now attempts to wipe out the entire race so its new partner can scour the continent of remaining life.

Verdict?

Easy keeper. The Dead King himself should be next, though don't expect that for a while — Big Bad and all, lots of stuff to cover. Plus, I'm 98% certain he counts as a crossover with MB, so I want to put some more effort than usual into him.
