Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Alright... looks like my voting period is nearly up. Yet, for some reason I didn't seem to get a lot of votes for my Noelle write-up. She seems to have been supported initially, but someone downvoted on it, without giving much of an explanation. I'm not whether I have more supporting or opposing votes.

[up][up][up] and [up][up][up][up]: Looks like I gotta go the general summary route, then.

Daybit Sem Void is a Crypter who gained a cosmic insight when he was ten years old. After joining Chaldea and listening to Marisbury Animusphere's plans, he threatened the latter to shut down CHALDEAS to prevent humanity from becoming the worst intelligent species in the universe before setting on awakening ORT — An Ultimate One and one of the ultimate human killers — using the sacrifice of Izcalli and the pacifistic Deinos instead. Daybit is proficient in deduction, as shown in his meeting with crypters, rescuing Scandinavia Peperoncino against Arjuna Alter, stealing Foreign God's heart, and handing over important items for Underworld passage to Ristuka Fujimaru. He is also just as good in direct combat, shown from his singlehandedly finishing Foreign God's simulation alone, figthing Camazotz — beast of oblivion — to a standstill, breaking through Kadoc and Ninkigal's interception, to fighting Fujimaru and Foreign God himself. Even after his plan failed due to Kukulkan — ORT's heart given sentience — fighting alongside Novum Chaldea, Daybit acknowledges Fujimaru by fighting them as a Master to settle the score and satisfy his curiosity on the duel. Willing to fight for humanity despite being separated from the Human Order, Daybit is willing to pull all stops to save the Universe.

How about this one?

Space, J didn't downvote "for no stated reason", he downvoted because Noelle ended up getting outplayed, something he pointed out earlier.

Well, that's a shame. Someone like Noelle really had great potential. I really wish they hadn't shoved her in the background like that. This got me thinking about Mama P. She lost her memories of magic within that storyline as well, and yet she's still allowed to become an MB. Mostly this is due to her having shown to be crafty and manipulative even without said memories — not to mention eventually regaining the memories anyway in the following season.

I feel like if something similar happened with Noelle and we got to see more of her, with her being shown to be cunning and crafty even without magic, maybe she'd still be allowed to keep the title, despite the setback. But alas, that didn't happen, and I suppose I already have enough from the series for now. I suppose you can't win them all.

Sorry for the delay on this one, wanted to post this 2 weeks ago. But had been undergoing rigorous training for work, so only just got this thing finished.

So last time I did an EP for Captain Blackberry from DragonFable. This will be a followup from the same arc, but now focusing on the Ninja half of the "Wind Orb" Saga. The candidate: Okuchi No Okami.

Premise

NOTE: Technically this occurs in the same "Wind Orb" Saga. BUT for this arc alone, it's formatted like a "choose your adventure" style story, so that depending on which choice you make it will branch into an Alternate Timeline. The completion of the Pirates side will contradict the events of the Ninjas side. This has no bearing on the rest of the game's storyline and the only time they do this.

So on the other side of Sho Nuff Island, lies the Shadow of the Wind Village. This sacred village is the training ground for Lore's most dedicated ninjas. They have been warring with the pirates for generations with both parties seeking the Wind Orb (or the "Jewel of the Four Winds" as the ninjas call it). There is however one enemy of their village that they have never been able to best before..

Who is Okuchi No Okami and what has he done?

Okuchi No Okami (totally not a ripoff of Okuchi no Makamai) is a humanoid devil fox or a kitsune, who works as a information peddler, as well as the greatest enemy of the village. Okuchi has repeatedly stolen from the village, including their sacred "Wind Scrolls", and has always managed to allude the ninjas' attempts at recovering them.

I've seen some sources say that he was once the greatest student of Thyton, the jonin of the ninja clan, before he ended up betraying the village. But I have not found any evidence of this in the game itself, so I'll disregard this in his write-up if he goes up.

Anyways.. much like the Pirates side, the Hero is tasked with retrieving the Wind Orb from the Kordana, only to find that Drakath has stolen it first. Thyton however figures out that Drakath was headed to Okuchi's location. Thyton sees this as an opportunity to retrieve the Wind Scrolls from Okuchi, while also acquiring intel of Drakath's location.

Okuchi however has been waiting for the Hero, greeting them and treating this as another business exchange. Okuchi confirms that Drakath had visited him a few days ago, and had sold him information on the Wind Orb. The Hero is surprised and suspicious on why Okuchi assisted Drakath rather than taking the Wind Orb for himself, to which Okuchi simply muses "I have my reasons".

Okuchi then attempts to do business with the Hero. He first provides them with Drakath's location free of cost, but offers another deal: Okuchi would help capture Drakath by laying a trap IF the Hero let him keep the Wind Scrolls.note  The Hero refuses and still demands the Wind Scrolls, ending up fighting and momentarily defeating Okuchi.

Using Okuchi's intel, the Hero is sent to Drakath's location. Once again the Wind Orb activates and knocks the Hero back, while blowing Drakath away. In this continuity, Drakath ends up hurtling towards the Shadow of the Wind Village itself. While the Hero and Drakath once again fight for the Wind Orb, Okuchi chooses this moment to invade the village with his army and takes the Wind Orb for himself.

Okuchi then explains how he manipulated the Hero and Drakath. When Drakath had first done business with Okuchi, bringing the Wind Orb with him, Okuchi was able to use the Wind Scrolls to partially activate the Wind Orb and program a travel route into it. Okuchi was aware that the Hero and Thyton were seeking the Wind Orb too, so he allowed Drakath to leave with the Orb and keep it on the move away from the heroes. Having Drakath as his unwitting protector of the Orb, Okuchi now had time to make preparations without having to divert resources to safeguard the Orb himself.

Okuchi also explains that, despite having lost the Wind Scrolls, he had already deciphered a great deal of their secrets. One of which being: on a certain night, the Wind Orb could be used to summon and command, the guardian of the Shadow of the Wind Village: Honda the Iron-Fisted Giant, to which Okuchi intended to use to destroy the ninja village and conquer the world.

However, turns out Thyton had a mole hidden among Okuchi's forces, Agent 58. Before Okuchi can finalise the ritual to summon Honda, Agent 58 throws a dagger at Okuchi, making him lose the grip on the Orb. While pissed at the betrayal, Okuchi is undeterred as he would be able to recover the Orb again later and vouches to kill the Hero and Drakath first. Drakath once again bails, leaving the Hero to fight the Devil Fox on their own, and manages to win.

Despite Okuchi being defeated, it's revealed he did in fact succeed in summoning Honda before he lost the Wind Orb, who now approaches intending to destroy the village Honda was meant to guard. Fortunately the Hero in DragonLord form fights Honda off.

How is he Magnificent? Competition?

Much like Blackberry, Okuchi is an exceptional chessmaster, anticipating both the Hero and Drakath's actions and manipulating them both to his own ends. Especially in the case of Drakath, where Okuchi had Drakath believe it was a business exchange only to have him unknowingly become the Wind Orb's personal bodyguard. He has a Near-Villain Victory being seconds from properly summoning Honda to his command, and as later revealed actually did succeed.

However unlike Blackberry, Okuchi holds a point over the pirate in terms of his personality. Okuchi is a polite, charming, smooth-talker and gets more chances to be a direct face-to-face manipulator. The fact there's a Non-Standard Game Over option to accept Okuchi's offer suggest that Okuchi is compelling enough that the Hero does at least consider it.

While Okuchi does get angered at two points: when the Hero bluntly rejects his offer and insults him, as well as when one of his own men betrays him. But he regains composure very quickly and never comes close to a Villainous Breakdown.

Too much of a Bastard?

Wanted to send in his personal monster to attack the village, seeking either their surrender or their complete destruction, followed by global domination. However, Okuchi is still very small-fry in the greater scheme of things, paling in comparison to not just the overarching Big Bads but even later Arc Villains who either outdo in graphical nature or scale.

Final verdict?

It's been a while since i did an EP. Hope i'm still good at it. I just finished the remaster of the three games and i think this guy can qualify.

What is the work ?

Crysis is a serie of FPS games where you control a soldier wearing a suit gaving him tech abilities.

Crysis 2 is set 3 years after the event of the first game. Prophet, one of the heroes from the original game has been infected by the Ceph Virus and feeling that his time was up gave his suit to a dying soldier known as Alcatraz before killing himself. There Alcatraz has to fight the Ceph menace with his allies.

Who is Jacob Hargreave ? What has he done ?

Hargeave is the creator of the Nanosuit. He is the one who gave it to Prophet and his allies and send them to Lingshan in order to test it against the Ceph. After Prophet's return, he confronted Hargreave about it and how his friends died in Lingshan causing him to stole the Nanosuit and flee. In return, Hargreave send the CELL to hunt Prophet and recover the Nanosuit. He eventually learns that Prophet died and that the suit was recovered by Alcatraz. He eventually arrives to contact Alcatraz and to guide him against the Ceph in order to make all necessary tests with the Nanosuit.

Eventually, having lost the faith of CryNet's Directors, Hargeave lost his position and was put under house arrest while the Directors allied with Dominic Lockhart. In need of answers from Hargreave about the Ceph, the Marines let Alcatraz in Roosevelt Island, the base of CELL. From there, Hargreave led Alcatraz by giving him informations about Lockhart's location and strategy on about going to him and kill him.

After Lockhart's death, Alcatraz is captured by Hargeave. Hargeave then tries to rip off the nanosuit from Alcatraz to take it from himself, thinking this is the only way to fight the Ceph, but his plan failed because of the intervention of Tara Strickland who was an undercover agent. After being freed, Alcatraz find Hargreave's location and discover that he is vegetative state. Hargreave gives Alcatraz a last Nanosuit upgrade before telling him to run while giving to the CELL the order to help Alcatraz. Hargreave then dies in the explosion of the island.

Is he Magnificent ?

He is a Well-Intentioned Extremist who thinks about saving the world from the Ceph. And while at first he was delusionnal into thinking that only him was able to fight the Ceph, once he lost he gave Alcatraz all the necessary ressources to fight and accepts his fate of dying.

He is intelligent ? Does he think on his feet ?

He manipuled Alcatraz into his doing by making him fight the Ceph in order test the suit and to recover data on the Nanosuit.

After he was put under house arrest and couldn't do anything, he still led Alcatraz into killing Lockhard before capturing him. And while his plan failed because of Tara, he accepted his fate with dignity while giving Alcatraz all the necessary to fight the Ceph.

Is he a Bastard ?

He has Prophet's teams send in Lingshan causing many of them to die in order to test the Nanosuit. When Prophet fleed by taking the suit, he had the CELL hunting him. He captured Alcatraz and tried to rip off the Nanosuit even though that could kill him.

Is he too much ?

No, everything he does is for the well being of humanity. He even told Prophet that he has no problem with him saving his team, and that he is unhappy to betray Alcatraz but didn't have a choice.

Edit : And while could argue he was arrogant into thinking only him would be able to save humanity, not only he still though about humanity and was not doing it for his ego but at the end he accepted his defeat.

Conclusion ?

Yes.

Yes to Okami and Hargreave.

I'm gonna get this one done now and the other later today. I'll put both on the Fallout sandbox that's still on the draft page.

  • Fallout: New Vegas: Alice McLafferty is the well respected and efficient head of the Crimsom Caravan, yet in truth is also a ruthless businesswoman more than willing to use underhanded methods to ensure her company's monopoly. Allying with Gloria Van Graff, Alice masterminds an illegal trade war where she undermines the Van Graffs' arms dealing rival, the Gun Runners, by having their weapon schematics stolen in exchange for Gloria sending mercenaries to wipe out other caravan operations so Alice can swoop in and buy their remaining assets for insultingly low bids and eliminate her competition. Outside of the trade war, Alice makes full use of the Courier by having them talk down and remove liabilities within the company and to sabotage a counterfeit bottle cap press to prevent the devaluing of the Mojave's main currency.

What's the work?

Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay is an animated film starring everyone's favorite gang of Boxed Crooks. This time, however, instead of securing America's safety on behalf of Amanda Waller, they're on a bit more selfish mission. Waller is dying, and she has a lot of sins to answer for. Seeking an escape, she sends the Squad after a "Get Out of Hell Free" card, which... well, it is what it sounds like. A magic card that, if you die while holding it, will send you straight to Heaven, no matter what horrid things you may have done.

Naturally, other people want this card as well. Namely Vandal Savage and the Reverse-Flash himself, Eobard Thawne. Complications ensue.

Who is Deadshot?

The de facto leader of the Squad, Deadshot is an expert marksman who seeks to earn freedom through service to Waller so he can reunite with his estranged daughter. Opening the movie on a mission that sees him apparently demoted from leader after he accidentally insulted Waller, Deadshot participates in a brutal train heist that sees the Squad violently yet efficiently slaughter the goons of infamous crime lord Tobias Whale. However, after killing Whale, the Squad's new leader Vertigo betrays them. He and the villainess Jewelee intend to tuck the heist's prize away somewhere safe, so that when they eventually serve their time they have a quick and easy way to make some cash.

Unfortunately for them Deadshot and Waller expected this. His "demotion" was all part of a ploy to lure out potential traitors on the Squad. Waller, who Deadshot has had listening in from an earpiece, activates their head bombs, though Deadshot decides to Mercy Kill Jewelee before hers can violently go off.

Later on, Deadshot and the Squad get sent on the hunt for the card. Lots of shenanigans ensue—when Deadshot finds out what their target really is, he uses Waller's personal desire for it to convince her to shave the remaining years from his sentence—and eventually they get into a shoot-out with Vandal Savage's goons. Deadshot manages to grab the card and have the others get behind him, dissuading Savage from attacking—the card only works once, so if he kills Deadshot while trying to shoot the others, he loses his one chance to escape his sins. Of course, he's still going to come after them with everything he has until he gets the card. To further dissuade a prolonged firefight, Deadshot flicks it away the moment before they enter an elevator and has Copperhead melt the cables, allowing them to quickly escape while a satisfied Savage proceeds to leave them alone.

Some more shenanigans ensue. Since he's in the area, Deadshot tries to visit his daughter, but this pisses off Waller and gets him demoted for real, with Bronze Tiger taking command... for all of ten minutes. As they try to track down Thawne, who has kidnapped Killer Frost, Deadshot realizes something's up and asks Waller to hold off from detonating Frost's bomb. Waller, as usual, is an asshole who doesn't listen, nearly killing them all when said bomb—which Thawne has removed from Frost and attached to an even bigger bomb—goes off and severely injures Tiger.

Skipping ahead to the climax:

  • They track down Savage, who immobilizes them with some weird floor trap thing that shocks their nervous systems out of commission.
  • Frost, who has sided with Thawne, freezes them in place while the speedster kills Savage.
  • Frost proceeds to betray Thawne, only to be killed when Waller activates Copperhead's bomb to take her out as well.
  • Captain Boomerang also betrays the Squad, because of course he does, but he doesn't make it very far with the card before Thawne beats him up.
  • Bronze Tiger drags himself to the fight, only for Thawne to begin torturing him to death.

Deadshot manages to shoot his way free of the ice and goes to fight Thawne, who loses the card when a fatally injured Tiger throws a knife that cuts off his fingers. Deadshot unloads his entire clip into the off-guard speedster... and decides to give the card to Tiger, allowing the anti-hero and Token Good Teammate of the Squad the happy ending he deserves. He proceeds to give the now useless card to an oblivious Waller, securing his freedom to go and make amends with his daughter.

Mitigating factors?

Come on, he's Deadshot! Expert, unscrupulous assassin who has no problems shooting whoever he needs to in order to get his way, but remains clever and honorable throughout. He's constantly looking for weaknesses in his enemies, is able to quickly notice traps or escape routes, and ultimately plays Waller for a complete fool to secure his freedom. His one major mistake is going AWOL to visit his daughter, but even after that he easily remains the most competent member of the Squad, and settles quickly back into the leader position once Bronze Tiger is injured.
