Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

My last argument on Infinata is that he destroyed galaxy on the show in which aliens are well estabilished to exist with no hint that they are rare or anything. If we do go with assumption that maybe galaxy he destroyed had only one inhabited planet then I accept it.

I just find it hillarious that baddy for whom I watched the show ended up most contegius out of candidates [lol].

Anyway onto a final Rocket Robin candidate

From episode “lord of the Underworld”

What has Lord of the Underworld done?

Revolutionary who attempted to conquer Earth, Lord was beaten and driven beneath the ground. There he discovered explosive element Magnium and plotted to use it for his revenge. Kidnaping three scientists, Lord has them pluget into machine which he plans to use to detonate Magnium and blow up the whole Earth, while he and his minions escape into space.

Robin, Will Scarlett and Little John (whom one of scientists saved life) venture into the earths crush to save them, but are captured. Lord activates the bomb while boarding a raiload which will take him into space. Robin deactivated bomb and saves scientists, while will crashes the railroad. We are later informed that Lord survived, but authorities should aprehend him

Redeming Factors?

He is nothing but would be dictator who wants to blow the up the world out of spite.

Heinouss standard?

He has the least resources from all villains who attempt to destroy the planet, having only a few minions, relatively weak earthguake machine and explosive materials he discovered by accident.

Others are Either dictators with planets under their command or have Super Advanced powers or technology.

Consclusion?

Lean Yes.

[tup]LOTU

Hooker time!

Who is He?

Pyro and Dancer, from Season 4’s "The Confession", are a pair of crooks who mug women at ATMs to not only rob them, but also rape them.

What has he done?

The two commence their fifth rape at the start of the episode by raping a female Episcopalian priest Beth, which leaves her traumatized. Dancer is killed early on when he tries to rape and mug a woman in broad daylight (real smart, I know), and is shot by police during a shootout.

Pyro, on the other hand, shows himself to be a smug asshole as he starts stalking Beth, denouncing her religion whenever the chance and even admitting the truth at a confessional knowing that it can’t be used against him, even trying to kill her himself. But he’s eventually foiled by Hooker while he tries to make his move on Beth, and is arrested for his troubles.

Redeeming Qualities?

None.

Heinousness?

These guys are essentially Bryce if he were two people, commencing several needless rapes for the fun of it as they try to steal from women. Pyro shows a lot of sadism as he gleefully stalks and torments Beth for no reason, and while Dancer bites it early, he's shown to be not any better than Pyro.

Conclusion

I think the two keep just fine

Yes to Pyro and Dancer. Strange names for a pair of rapists but whatever.

I'm kind of wary about every Rocket Robin candidate. Exactly how much gravitas is being placed on the victims of these planetary wipe-outs actually dying? Like there's a marked difference between a cartoony 60s show going "he wants to blow up the world! Oh no!!!" versus something like ExoSquad and the planetary genocides actually being out-and-out called "genocide."

Like, you mentioned one of these guys blows up a city, but you mention nothing about explicit fatalities...you understand I have very valid concerns about this stuff being undermined by stuff like No Endor Holocaust and Fridge Horror, given its origin.

I'm not saying this has to go as hardcore as ExoSquad to pass, but this kinda stuff could really easy to play as just cartoony Saturday morning stuff (considering this was the Dark Age of Animation and you'd be hard-pressed to find any cartoon played any more seriously than, say, Scooby Doo—hell, even nowadays, you look a cartoon like, say, Atomic Betty where "blowing up planets" is still kid-friendly cartoon villainy). The vagueness of the actual body counts I'm hearing about thus far and the general interchangeability of the guys who each wanna blow up a planet make me inclined to lean "no" toward most of them—the one guy I think might actually pass is the Warlord but I'd appreciate another eye on him too.

Fully understand waryness Scraggle.

For Fantasmo while he dosen’t use word genocide, he openly gives inhabitants of Calmar ultimatum of either becoming slaves or perishing, while Sol is openly voried that going against him will only lead to destruction for his people. Also to clarify he dosen’t blow up a city, he has it’s roots destroyed causing it to crash. here is clip of the destruction (around 7 minutes in then Jump to 9:50 avoid recap)

For Lord he gives monolugue about how world will blow up and know his vengence (openly reffering to it as the end of the world), while he will safely escape.

When it comes to Infinata, whole first segment of his debut is dedicated to scientists from Gorth lamenting coming doom of their planet and one of them escaping desparate to preserve some trace of their civilisation.

While show in general goes with Never Say "Die" rule (some itances like Prince John traying to execute Robin nowstanding), it still makes clear that characters and in that cases planets and its inhabitants are in danger of destruction. It are one of cases where while words like death are never used it is given weight and description to make clear the danger.

Yes to Pyro and Dancer. Since it has been three days, here is my writeup for Hugo that will not be in drafts. Lighty, I believe will do writeup for Torak.

  • The Knights of the Cross: Hugo von Danveld stands out in the monstrous Order of the Teutonic Knights. Even unpopular among his brethren of knights, Hugo takes pleasure in slaughtering pagans and Christian Poles who protect them. When he and other knights ambush pagans, Polish knight Jurand of Spychow protects pagans, and von Danvel leaves his brothers to die. He only avoids punishment since he swears on an oath that he lost control over his horse, thus breaking a holy taboo of his Order. Hating Jurand for making him stand trial, Hugo von Danveld comes up with a plan to kidnap Jurand's daughter Danusia and expresses desire to rape her too. When the messenger of Teutonic Knights, Mr. de Fourcy doesn't like the plan, and decides to inform a Polish prince about it, Hugo has him murdered. Once Danusia is kidnapped, Hugo has the bandits who kidnapped her hanged instead of compensating them. When Jurand comes and begs for his daughter, Hugo takes pleasure in the father's despair and taunts him that even if he gives him his daughter back, she will give him his bastard. Fanatical, hypocritical, and sadistic, Hugo von Danveld really represented the worst traits of the Teutonic Knights and no wonder other Teutonic Knights (also fanatics) loathed him and never promoted him to higher position in the Order.

Okay, I think euphemisms in this case are alright given the context of what's shown, so I'm gonna focus more on interchangeability.

The Warlord gets a yes since he's definitively the highest-scale baddie we see, and I think I'm fine giving a yes to Infinita as well.

No to Fantasmo and the Lord of the Underworld, who both seem interchangeable with one another and both seem less evil than the guys aiming for bigger scales. You say the Underworld guy has the "least" amount of resources, but from where I'm standing it seems all these guys have planet-shattering doomsday devices, so I don't think he stands out.

Alright, I was finally able to 'refine' this and it seems to be working now.

Also decided to try folderizing for the first time.

What's the work?

Pan is a film from 2015, meant to tell a reimagined origin of Peter Pan. Taking place in the 1940s, this version Peter is an orphan who ends up being sold by the nuns running the orphanage to pirates. He is taken to 'Neverland' and allies with James Hook. Peter learns the truth of his parents, his destiny, and that must take down the Pirate warlord Blackbeard….it is not a bad film by any means. And clearly had some geniune passion and effort put behind it, but unfortunately falls too hard into cliches and never really pushes into being above average.

Nonetheless? It makes for a nice watch if you're interested and has given Our candidate here.

    open/close all folders

    Who is Blackbeard?

A gleefully Hammy antagonist portrayed delightfully by Hugh Jackman. Blackbeard was a feared pirate captain known as the 'original nightmare' or the 'Pirate all pirates fear. At some point, he found Neverland. After arriving he would become a conquerer as he plunders and wages war on the denizens of Neverland. He also uses fairy dust, or 'pixum' to extend his life. He would also have fairies hunted down to near extinction, with the races of Neverland having to ally to fight him.

Eventually, his lover Mary was approached by the prince of fairies, who would then come to her cabin every nigh before the 2 fell deeply in love. Blackbeard flew into a jealous rage when he discovered this. To save her, the fairy prince would turn human and help her escape, sacrificing himself in the process. She would have the prince's child, who was prophesied to be the boy who defeats Blackbeard once and for all. Mary became a warrior who helped the fairies fight the pirates, before Mary dueled Blackbeard himself, with Blackbeard ultimately killing her.

Blackbeard continues to rule over the parts of Neverland he conquered for years. He would also have his pirates kidnap numerous people, including children, from the normal world. Where they would be forced to do hard labor in the mines for Pixdum. Under the threat of his 'disaproval'. In a twist of fate this ends up bringing Peter, who was left on earth for his protection, back to Neverland. Now this gets to uh…well, the present day of the film. When Blackbeard is introduced with the one scene everyone remembers about this movie. Blackbeard and his legions of followers singing 'smells like teen spirit' by Nirvana.

Explanation

Later on, Peter gets in trouble for seemingly stealing. Blackbeard thus decides to 'make an example' of him…and having yet another musical number. With 'Blitzkrieg Bop'

Afterwards he holds the 'trial' listing the supposed misdeeds. And asking the crowd if they wanted mercy for the boy or for the captain to get 'nasty'. The bloodthirsty crowd calls for the latter and he gleefully kicks Peter off the ship…only for Peter to not die, but instead begining to fly. This shows that he is the boy of the prophecy, he asks if Peter intended to kill him before he sends Peter to a cell in a cave.

Peter ends up escaping with James Hook, who was also there in the cave cells. Blackbeard would then begin a search for them across the Island. Eventually Blackbeard finds the inspector Mr.Smee, who accompanied Peter and James. He soon rats out that the nearby Tribe both had Peter, and also telling him that the fairy race was not totally extinct. And the rest of the race, alongside a mountain of Pixdum, was in a hidden mountain. Blackbeard launches an attack on the large Tribe, killing many of them before gathering several natives. He demands answers from the chief, before Blackbeard coldly executes him for his lack of cooperation. Sarcastically naming Tiger Lily the 'new chief' and repeating his questions for her. Hook spills the truth that there was a map to the tree to save her. Peter is able to save them with a flock of giant birds before he and Blackbeard confront each other again in a tent. Here, Blackbeard tells him of his mother's death, revealing that Peter was deceived about his mother being alive. He then tries to kill Peter, before he is rescued.

Finally in the climax he awaits for Peter to arrive at the gate. He figures out that the necklace Peter's mother gifted him was the key to the mountain, taking it from him. He enters the mountain and has the heroes restrained. He finally begins his plan…he would have his men begin to set fire to swarms of fairies, intending to destroy the whole hive and have the mountain of Pixdum for himself so he could be immortal. He then tries to kill Peter a final time for refusing to bow to him once again. To summarize the final battle, Hook pulls a Big Damn Heroes Changed My Mind, Kid and Peter is able to fully access his powers and gets the fairies to work with him to beat the villains.. At the end? The pirates are beaten and Blackbeard's ship ends up crashing and he descends to his death with one final 'Hello' in the tone of the Nirvana song.

    Mitigating Factors?

So here's the interesting part….Mary, she was the love of his life. Their relationship was definitely possessive on Blackbeard's part, as Lily's narration in the flashback directly says how she was his 'greatest possession' and it's implied he was going to kill or seriously hurt her when he found out about the truth of her affair with the prince. Sense the Prince had to 'save' her. But nonetheless? His love for her, at the time, was genuine despite being utterly twisted. He is shown to be somewhat reluctant to fight her and when he stabs and finally kills her? He lets out a Big "NO!" while holding her in his arms.

Now, if this was simply a case of 'He never brings it up again' this would not be an effort post. But the thing is….in the present day? He does bring up the fact he killed her….And is pretty damn cold about it, even seeming to gloat about the fact to Peter.

"You will never find your mother. Do you know why? Because I killed her. She died at my hand. By this very blade. As you will, too."

He says this without a hint of regret And a second time later, he again acknowledges that he killed her with complete apathy. Once more using her memory to mock Peter. "Mom tries to protect the kingdom by giving your son the key. I kill Mom, but fail to kill the son. In turn, son fails to protect the kingdom by giving me the key. Mom would be very disappointed. Would she not?" Saying the last part with a mocking grin.

The comparison I would use is that it's less like Ego and more like Dr.Emilia from Kipo. Both clearly regretting 'having' to kill their loved ones in the past, but nonetheless do all they can to bury that guilt. In some ways I would say Blackbeard is a crueler case then Emilia, It's merely implied Emilia would gloat about the truth of Liam's death to Kipo's mom. Here we explicitly see Blackbeard do so to Peter.

And aside from the stuff with Mary? There is nothing. He is simply a supremely selfish, megalomaniacal warlord who desires to live forever while imposing his tyrannical reign on Neverland.

And while Blackbeard is a damn fun villain thanks to Jackman's acting. With the occasional amusing moment like those song scenes? He is in no way Played for Laughs, and his actions are treated with full weight.

    Is he bad enough?

This is not a remote concern, Blackbeard is easily heinous enough. While the slavery stuff might not be as bad as it could be? It's still worse then I remembered on a rewatch. As Blackbeard threatens them if they don't work hard and Hook directly says they could die in the mines. But for the real meat of his rap sheet he has been waging war on Neverland for years(We see illustrations from the knowledge tree of Blackbeard's men slaughtering denizens of Neverland). He hunted fairy-kind to the point of near extinction. Then he kills numerous natives during his attack on the tribe. And of course the guy wants explicit genocide of the remaining fairies with the frankly brutal method of burning them all alive.

This is in addition to some extra murders or Kick the Dog moments here or there. From killing Peter's mother, indirectly causing the death of his father. Executing Tiger Lily's father in front of her. And in the climax callously kicks off one of his minions to his death.

    Final Verdict?

This is an…interesting one. Especially given the film is mostly fine being one-note, so giving a villain like this any pathos is pretty surprising. Nonetheless I personally think any remorse or love he held for Mary in the past is either dead or firmly suppressed in the present day. And if that is not mitigating he is a rock solid keeper.
