Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Yeah to El Tigre and Don Pablo and to Nelo Angelo. Interesting decision there, and kinda similar to what ended up going down with Gilver in DMC proper.

Also, I'm still playing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It's long, and I have work and my personal life, so discussion on it will probably be late. Still, I am making my way through it and will finish it I assure you all; I predict a week's delay. I'm also taking a break from the threads to focus on the stuff I have to do. I also have PM's I have yet to get back to - I apologise for that. I will respond to them all when I return.

Just wanna say, my appearances in the threads are gonna be a bit episodic for the next couple of months, final year of uni and that so I just wanna apologise in advance for any slow P Ms off me. I promise it's not intentional.

EDIT: Saw Kung Fu Panda 4, so P Ms are open about it.

Okay so first EP for Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger is here.

What is the Work?

Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger is the 47th main installment of the Super Sentai franchise. The series deals with five monarchs (Gira, Yanma, Hymeno, Kaguragi, Rita and then six with Jeramie) of the alien planet Tikyuu, battling against the evil forces of the insectoid Bugnaarok Empire, led by Naraka King Desnaarok who wants to subjugate the humans of Tikyuu, while simultaneously dealing with the threat of Racles Husty, the monarch of Shugoddam who wishes to take over the entire planet. They are led by Gira Husty, the younger brother of Racles who rebels against him to save Tikyuu and free his kingdom of his tyranny. They are helped by the Shugods, this series' mecha, giant insectoid robots that can combine into a giant robot.

However, when the Bognaarok are finally beaten it's revealed that everyone was being manipulated and used by the Uchuu (Galactinsects), alien demigods who become the main villains in the second half and led by the nefarious Dagded Dujardin who is assisted by his five Jesters: Kamejim, Glodie, Hibill, Minongan and Goma Rosalia.

Who is the Candidate? What have they done?

Dagded Dujardin is the Galactinsect King and self-proclaimed Ruler of the Universe. According to himself, Dagded is a galactic deity in charge of destroying planets that bloat the Universe with him taking a rather sadistic approach to it by destroying them through the inhabitants infighting until a mutually assured destruction ensues, with the usage of deception, trickery and his minions pushing the conflicts further.

He reveals himself first by ordering the slaughter of the surviving Bugnaarok members after his agent; Kamejim, who'd been posing as a Bugnaarok general for centuries, revealed his true intentions and killed Desnaarok for giving up; leaving only Jeramie alive (though a servant of his, Gerojim, also survived by chance) albeit beaten to near death. He then reveals himself to the people of Tikyuu by announcing his name and briefly dropping meteorites in an attempt to cause casualties when they get his name wrong.

From that point forward he sends his agents to spread ruin through Tikyuu, eventually exiling the Monarchs to Planet Earth for daring to defy him; on Earth it's revealed that the show is a Stealth Sequel to Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger with Dagded having pulled a Happy Ending Override by creating the "Neo-Deboth Army" and helping them conquer Earth and seal the power of the Kyoryugers, after the King-Ohger return to Earth we learn that among his many crimes he had committed in the past were forcing Reiniol Husty, the first monarch of Shugoddam, to declare war against the Bugnaarok to begin with or else he'd wipe out the planet and ordered the deaths of various heroes as well as the "Fury of Gods" where one of his servants, Glodie Lecodium, unleashed hordes of undead Shugods to ravage the land and kill thousands of innocents and even magically and painfully impregnating Gira and Racles' mother through magic so she'd give birth to Gira (a pregnancy that resulted in her death) and use the child to gain full control of the Shugods through his lineage and killed Racles' father, Corsus, for failing to cause enough destruction to amuse him along with later trying to render the deceased Reiniol Deader than Dead by attacking him in the afterlife of Hakabaka (though it failed). Finally, he used various deceased Shugods to create Rainbow Jujuria, a meal Gira likes but would have gradually turned him into an insane monster under Dagded's control.

After Racles reveals himself to have been a good guy all along, he tricks Dagded into giving him part of his power and uses it to empower the King-Ohgers so they'd be able to defeat Dagded and kill him, which he and Gira manage to do... Until he is revived when they follow with Minongan Moth's death, who turns out to have been a body backup for Dagded in the event he died. Though masking his anger with apathy, Dagded intensifies his schemes against Shugoddam choosing to give the entire planet A Fate Worse Than Death for daring to defy him and add them to the colossal collection of several planets that ended the same way. He loses three minions (Goma, Hibill and Minongan) to the King-Ohgers but doesn't care in the slightest, viewing it as a minor frustration.

Near the finale, Glodie finds out he was actually a living corpse of a long-deceased Bugnaarok who Dagded reanimated initially in the original Bugnaarok planet so he'd destroy it and then set on Tikyuu to carry out the Fury of Gods. After Glodie is turned into a living being and then destroyed for good, Dagded decides to take matters into his own hands to ravage Tikyuu at last and destroy his enemies for good. He starts out by easily defeating the King-Ohgers and then destroying most of Shugoddam (though the citizens escape before he can get to them) then when he hears of a plan to evacuate the civilians of Tikyuu while he fought the heroes, he stops the escaping refugee vessel just to make the monarchs suffer and sends Kamejim to finish them all off. He is soon frustrated when it turns out that the "refugee spaceship" was a decoy and the civilians return to help their kings then the many victims of his plan return from the dead and start wiping out his army of revived Bugnaarok monsters and Jesters with Kamejim himself dragged to Hakabaka by a revived Desnaarok. In the final battle when the King-Ohger make their robot, Ultimate King-Ohger, to become powerful enough to face Dagded the latter shows his full might and attempts to kill the heroes with his full power but is stopped when the Shugods sacrifice themselves so as to strip him of his immortality and leave him open to be killed for good.

Is he Heinous Enough?

Dagded is the vilest villain in the series bar none, responsible for every atrocity indirectly or directly.

He committed several genocides across various planets with all due pleasure, tortured his minions when they failed him and even allowed them to be hurt whenever he felt like it.

He also manipulated the royals of Shugoddam to commit atrocities in his name and even Racles, who had intended to defeat him, had to become a fearsome evil tyrant by force just to keep himself on Dagded's good graces long enough. Going as far as making Gira and Racles' mother pregnant with the former in a gambit of his to create a Tyke Bomb and later killed their father when the crimes he carried out to satisfy Dagded weren't vile enough to impress him.

And in his final episodes he attempts to spitefully kill all life on Tikyuu out of frustration with the planet's inhabitants defying him.

Redeeming Qualities?

None, really.

In his debut he keeps Gira from dying after he warps him to a barren planet with no oxygen, but since Gira was a very important pawn in his plans he absolutely needed him alive so it's not out of kindness or even faux-politeness. Speaking of which, despite referring to Gira as his son, he carries no love of any kind for him, viewing him as just another piece of his games.

He is said to be a cosmic deity acting in favor of balancing the universe but the fact that his modus operandi involves provoking civil wars in planets for his amusement or outright destroying planets that don't obey him, his supposed "role" doesn't really matters to him, as much as it does having fun with the lives of mortals.

He also acts nice to Minongan... Only because he's his living Body Backup Drive and thus can't afford to hurt him too much and screw himself out of a revival method. He cares nothing when his revival leads to Minongan losing his memories and then when Minongan is sealed away forever.

Does he count

Big yes. He's probably one of the most evil Sentai villains, if not the absolute worst

"Bingo! If two species hate each other, they will wipe each other out on their own."

Alrighty, was planning on doing this tomorrow but why not?

What’s The Work?

The Life is a 1997 musical centering on life in The Big Rotten Apple, during which we focus on the prostitutes and other working women, the protagonist of which is Queen, a young woman and temporary prostitute who is working to help get a better life for herself and her boyfriend and “pimp” Fleetwood, however the rotten apple has other ideas.

Two villains count, here’s one of them and the Big Bad.

Who is Memphis? What Does He Do?

Described as “the biggest businessman on the block”, Memphis is a pimp who manages to have 12 women under his belt, all of which are shown to be pretty fearful of being beaten by him. Memphis gets interested in the Young Queen and conspires to “claim her” for himself, to that end working with Jojo, (Our resident Narrator and another candidate we’ll speak of later) to have her, getting Jojo to hook Fleetwood on drugs so he would spiral and getting Queen.

Memphis is introduced entering the bar his women are at, with all the women fearfully leaving as soon as he comes in, and he proceeds to pour the beer of his veteran woman, Sonja’s, hand. As he is being praised by the other pimps for his success with women, Memphis breaks into a Villain Song where he describes his ability to charm and manipulate women into becoming his girls, saying it doesn’t take much to make a girl into a woman and that he can promise them a piece of heaven to ‘bring them down to hell” One of these women were Sonja, who was revealed to have started working ever since she was 16 (horrifying) and she worked to the point of being worn out, exhausted and basically says she prefers prison than the real world.

After they Succeed in breaking up Queen and Fleetwood, Memphis charms Queen greatly as he buys her a beautiful dress….however, he revealed that he expects her to pay him back for it. And how does he expect her to pay? By having him pimp her out for a year. When Queen attempts to refuse, Memphis simply threatens her (in song form!) about how he owns her now and I’d she refuses, he’ll have her and Fleetwood slowly killed. Memphis then attempts to rape her then, causing the Dress to tear and Memphis saying that he’ll get her to work for longer before attempting to sexually assault her, only being interrupted by Sonja.

Queen attempts to escape Memphis and hides out in a bar owned by a old guy man named Lacy. However, she is found by Memphis who proceeds to brutally beat Queen, a pretty horrific moment only capitalized by Memphis deciding to cast her down to the bums who will “screw anything” and proceeds the next night to have his right hand, Snickers, pimp her at knife point, an expirence that nearly breaks Queen all together. And it’s made clear the other women aren’t much better, if what Sonja says is anything to go by:

I’m sick and tired of feeling like my back is broken,
Sick of getting splinters in my knees.
Sick of being worried if I’m gonna catch a beating
Nit to mention, catching who-knows-what-disease.

Luckily, Sonja manages to help Queen and they meet in the night near the Hudson River to have Queen flee, and Fleetwood comes to try and help convince her to have him come. However, Memphis comes with Jojo, who tipped him off, and threaten both Sonja and Queen, saying he owns them.

The confrontation ends with Memphis fatally stabbing Fleetwood with a knife, before Queen shoots Memphis dead. Queen manages to escape to freedom as Sonja decides to take the fall for Memphis’ death, and Jojo? Well, we’ll get to him.

Mitigating Factors?

Absolutely none. He’s a charming sociopath who only sees women as a way to be successful and to own, with any bit of mercy simple pragmatism on his part. His own villain song very much describes himself as a prefect manipulator with no morals. While the first half is more lighthearted, the second half makes everything come to a halt, with Memphis actions completely destroying the tone and being nightmarish.

Heinous Standard?

When it comes to a more grounded work, Memphis is something else. He is a brutal pimp who is shown to manipulate young women into effectively owning them and putting them through back breaking sex work, with Sonja herself being only 16 when it happened to her. He then has Jojo hook Fleetwood Into drugs to get to Queen and attempts to have Queen be pimped out for over a year, with just one night of the forced prostitution being completely soul crushing for her and a hellish experience, and having beaten her brutally when she attempted to defy him. There are other pimps in the story, Fleetwood attempts to be one of them, but none of them are shown in detail and Memphis is known as an exceptionally cruel and brutal with the most women to any pimp in the story as well as his brutal back breaking sex work and beatings. Overall? He’s a bastard, and a very evil one at that.

Verdict?

Yes to Memphis!

"It is busy, isn't it? It may be small but it is my room and also the universe. Space is cramped. No-one can even imagine what it is like out there. It is something that even a small brain like you, leaving on that measly Earth in an even smaller galaxy, should understand. How about this? How careless of me. I was about to crush Earth. There are too many lives and planets in this room. I need to organise but tidying up is boring. So, I made it fun. I made a game where I make people fight and destroy their planet. It entertains me! Another one from The Life and a bit of an unorthodox one.

Who is Jojo? What Does He Do?

Real name Joseph P. Morse, Jojo is our residential narrator of the story, who opens the play with the first two songs with a charismatic flair, but trust me, Jojo ain’t as cool as he makes himself out to be.

He introduces us to the life of New York City, and to himself. Jojo is a self describe hustler who managed to climb his way to the top while at the bottom of the rug. His success? He manages to lure and charm young girls coming into New York, and when charming them enough to work for him as either strippers and prostitutes, he hands them off to his business partner and associate, Lou, for “action” movies. During this Villain Song, Jojo describes having to backstab anyone he knows, including his friends, as long as it gets him far enough in the ladder of Success. Jo Jo then attempts to convince Queen to work for him before he shooed away by Sonja.

He later comes and manipulated Fleetwood, who he has been supplying drugs to in order to fuel his addiction and send him on a downward spiral. He manages to get Fleetwood to have sex with one of his new girls, a Minnesota woman named Mary. When Queen finds out and breaks up with him, Jojo is revealed to be in cahoots with Memphis, convincing Memphis to swoop in and woo Queen for himself while Jojo gets payed, and Jojo proceeds to ship off Mary to Lou, getting Fleetwood alone and isolated.

When Queen attempts to flee Memphis and asks Jojo for help, he promptly betrays her and leads Memphis to her, and stays to watch with enjoyment as Memphis brutally beats up Queen, and Jojo later brings Fleetwood to see Queen’s bloodied state as a way to threaten him.

When Sonja attempts to help Queen escape and Fleetwood wants to go as well, Jojo is revealed to have again, tipped off Memphis and a confrontation ensured. When Fleetwood uses a gun to get them to back off, Jojo attacks and knocks the gun from his hand, which gets Memphis to stab Fleetwood to death. After Queen shoots Memphis dead, Jojo immediately sees this as the market opening up, and demands that Queen work for him now, and when she escape and Sonja decides to frame her, Jojo attempts to force her as well, seeing her as worn out but still useful. However, Sonja threatening him with a gun causes him to flee as Sonja turns hersel into the police.

And jojo himself? Absolutely nothing.

Jojo closes out the story by again, talking to the audience, and speaking that despite Memphis death and Sonja and Queen “got through the net” there is always more supply and demand. He then reveals that his help with Lou managed to get him a position as a east coast representative, where he is freed to do his “business” behind close doors.

With that, he ends the story spotting a 17 year old, fresh off the bus and comes to charm her into becoming his next victim.

Mitigating Factors?

The beginning of the story shows Jojo in a pretty friendly and entertaining light, but it’s made pretty apparent that Jojo is a very slimy, sadistic, backstabbing and greedy socialite who’s willing to betray anyone if it can help him. He is very clear in showing that all his “friends” are a means to an end for him, and he would backstab them in a heartbeat, showing wheN he sees the death of Memphis as a new opening for business. He’s also very racist.

Heinous Standard?

Honestly, he’s a but more weaker than Memphis, who subjects his pimps to brutal sex work, but I think Jojo is integral to a lot of Memphis’ actions as well as a bit of his own niche. Not only does Jojo charm women into getting them in Casting Couch offers to his friend, but Jojo is an integral part in Memphis plan, personally getting Fleetwood addicted to drugs and getting him to cheat on Queen so Memphis, a well known brutal pink, can pick her up. It’s also revealed that Jojo was the main one, as he was the one to convince Memphis to go after Queen as “he always wanted Queen in his Deck.” Tying Jojo to everything to the story. He personally betrays Queen and informs Memphis of her attempted escape, staying to watch as she is beaten bloody by Memphis and takes Fleetwood to see her so he can threaten him personally. And he then tips off Memphis about Sonja trying to escape, and it’s made clear he understand full well how bad their treatment is as he refers to them being “runaway slaves” and is made aware he is helping a brutal pimp as Memphis.

And when Memphis is killed, it’s made clear Jojo will face no consequences and will continue doing his “business deals” and ends the story picking up a 17 year old girl. So overall, Jojo is a slimy socialite who not only picks up young girl for Lou, he also manages to enable and is an integral part to Memphis’ horrific crimes, with his own unique flairs of cruelty with it (personally hooking Memphis into drugs, convincing Memphis to make the move to get Queen and betraying Queen knowing full well she’s gonna become another victims of a Memphis’ tortures sex work), and he’s clear in the fact he is gonna continue doing his actions no matter what happens.

Verdict?

Weaker, but still good yes.

Keep Fighting. Keep Loving.
