Trope names with outdated and/or offensive language

Well you (and everyone else) lucked out because it appears Synch wick checked and queued up Sim Sim Salabim so we'll see where that goes. When the thread opens I might pitch Hollywood India as a rename, but we'll wait til the thread for that.

Sim Sim Salabim has been renamed to Mystical India per TRS.

I pinned the first post and added a link to the sandbox.

When it comes to a trope name for not believing in things that exist, how about "Gravity Denier?" Hmm, that might be more fitting as a term for conspiracy theorists...

That sounds more like Flat-Earth Atheist. (Which is in itself a bad name, IMO.)

Flat-Earth Atheist is a really horrible name.

Magic Skeptic or Magical Skeptic would be a better name.

That implies the skeptic themselves is magic.

It also only describes half of the trope.

This overlaps with the Isolated Pages thread, but Quotes.Eskimos Arent Real is now flagged for "Dangerous or derogatory content". So I guess that's one reason to think about this one.

Fair point. I admittedly don't know what the wick check would be either, and I probably wouldn't support cutting valid page content solely because of the flag. So I should have thought this over better.

Eskimos Aren't Real should be renamed Inuit Arent Real.

it doesn't even have to be referential, Denies Real Thing Exists or something along those lines is much more self explanatory. "Inuit Aren't Real" could be mistaken for some kind of historical alternate universe trope.

We discussed potential renames for Eskimos Aren't Real earlier in this thread — as early as page 1.

...Or literally anything else, no need to single out the Inuit at all.

Thing is the "Eskimo" thing is more accurate to what the trope is actually about, considering that the phrase evokes a very specific stereotypical version of the Inuit and not actual Inuit people, to the point where the concept is so stereotypical that it makes "Eskimos" seem like a media invention. Everyone knows the Inuit are real, but "Eskimos" are a way more generalized and exaggerated portrayal, similar to the "Gypsy / Romani" debate; it comes off more like they're this funny mythical people that just fish and build igloos all day, rather than an actual people with culture and feelings.

In other words, we'd need to replace it with something equally exaggerated, not just swap into the correct version of the word.

The IUEO requirement, I guess? Isn't Eskimos Aren't Real about a character getting it wrong? (I mean there's also In-Universe Factoid Failure, but... meh)

Then again it has a real life folder, which... really is just Aluminum Christmas Trees

And keep in mind I could be off base here. I just think that swapping "Eskimos" with "Inuit" sort of misses the point of why "Eskimo" was used in the first place.

Of note is that Aluminum Christmas Trees is currently on the TRS Queue—Vampire Buddha queued it up arguing for a YMMV move.

Maybe, but I think avoiding specificity would be beneficial for the trope in any case.

And here I expected that pothole would go to Would I Lie to You?.

i was expecting Azumanga Daioh! maybe the way it's been referenced in multiple series lends a bit more credibility to the name?
