Memetic X Cleanup

Bad Luck Brian is basically a real guy whose photo was used for the purpose of Memetic Loser thus developing into a character via memes, so I think it counts because the character is driven by memes to be a loser.

I think some of the LP examples could count if those characters also become losers in the eyes of the LP-er's fanbases.

Okay. Kept the examples about Brian, Hawke and the Condemned; hid the Pokémon examples; deleted the ones that are just mocking internet celebrities.

I've been wanting to cleanup Memes.Trails Series (worth noting that I hid a few of them in the past since they come across as general complaints than memes (per here).

• Barring Kevin being the odd one out, fans have noticed that every Trails protagonist will always have a little girl being a big motivator for them. Estelle with Renne in the Sky arc, Lloyd with KeA in the Zero arc, Rean with Altina in the Cold Steel arc, newcomer "C" with Lapis in Reverie, and Van with Yume in Kuro. seems more like a general observation than a meme and fits more under Recurring Element
• Among the Japanese fanbase - LOLICON DIVE!!! ZCE, plus the word Lolicon gives me a bad taste in my mouth
• On /vg/, spamming "TITS SC WHEN" is this. Another variation is "TITS ON STEAM WHEN". ZCE
• Elie, Tio and Wazy's bait. ^note A very popular strategy, especially for bosses on Nightmare difficulty is to arrange your party in a way that the member (particularly Lloyd) at the front to Draw Aggro with a 90% and above evasion rate, guaranteeing constant dodging and counters while the other three members hang out at the back cast arts for the main bulk of damage. Elie, Tio and Wazy are usually the stop picks for this because of their high ATS value along with Tio's Zero Field. fits more under Complacent Gaming Syndrome or something else
• Market Manager Otto^note A very minor NPC in the game who appears in the first chapter of Cold Steel I and II who ends up dying during the Civil War in Cold Steel II, and yet all the major characters that the players care about act like he's one of the most important people in the series. It’s mainly used to mock how the game plays up Otto dying as some huge tragedy when all of Celdic got burned to the ground, yet he was the only person to die, which is actually something only present in the English localization as in the Japanese version it's stated that multiple civilians died in the razing. complaining
• Singa music^note An extremely derogatory meme referring to quite a number of tracks composed and arranged by Mitsuo Singa that several fans find quite bad to extremely bad. It started picking up during Cold Steel IV but Reverie took it to a whole new level. I'd argue Mitsuo is divisive rather than outright hated since there are a few tracks people like from him (mostly Ys stuff
• Two seconds.^note Lloyd's Never Live It Down moment where he gets curb stomped in one hit at the end of Chapter 1 has him powering up and assaulting Rufus, only to get downed in exactly two seconds. again complaining
• Another Dead End.^note Due to the Time Travel granted by the Genesis and the numerous amounts of ways the characters die due to random circumstances, this has become the calling card of Kuro II. complaining again

• "Star Rail is the best Trails gacha Falcom never made"^Explanation As noted elsewhere on the page, Star Rail takes a lot of spiritual inspiration from the Trails series, with the influences being worn on the sleeves in places and the game attracting a lot of Trails fans thanks to the similarities in vibes and gameplay. It hasn't escaped the notice of Trails/Falcom fans, though, that Falcom's taken multiple stabs at a Trails gacha title over the years in partnership with other developers, and every one of them has been a pretty miserable failure. Star Rail is pretty much the exact kind of game Falcom's been wanting to develop in that time, but it ended up being made by a company that has no official relationship to them and with an IP that isn't Trails, so they end up losing out (since now, if another Trails mobile title is made in Star Rail's vein, it'll have to compete with SR).

As an outside observer of HSR and a Trails fan, I can see the similarities but as the entry is written, this more of a general observation than a meme since it doesn’t seem to be describing a joke. Any other opinions?

I agree with you. It's more of a sentiment than a meme.

• Cube ^Explanation  Fans noted that there seems to be a lot of cube-based bosses. Observations that doesn’t explain the joke
• "Crossbell is getting invaded again."^Explanation  Before the release of the game, many players thought that SSS would have to fight against Rufus and his army to obtain their freedom and then it would be a brand new story afterwards while Rufus will keep his promise with his fellow Ironbloods by taking the fall (as depicted by Cold Steel IV's events). When the game was released, it turns out that Crossbell was about to declare its independence when it turns out that it would get invaded once again by Rufus and a rogue detachment of the Erebonian army. Compounding the issue even further is that the real Rufus is actually in jail and is already in the middle of his sentence when someone tries killing him. Then Rufus breaks out, dons the "C" mask and find out what exactly is going on. Observations that doesn’t explain the joke

None of these explain how the meme is used.

The Meg has these:

These memes are one and the same. Should they be kept as is? Change indentation? Merge? Cut one of them?

Well examples can't use "above" and derivative memes are indented with the original one. Personally sound distinct enough.

It sounds like the latter is a valid spin-off response that is sometimes used to the above meme. You can move the latter to second indentation, I think that's valid for spin-off memes.

Actually, this was discussed semi-recently and I believe it was indeed agreed that derivatives should just be referenced in the same line (I remember this discussion because I was the one who pointed out the inconsistent indentation rules, and mods were in the discussion)

Yeah it's been discussed but not thoroughly, and the indentation of memetic mutation examples is controversial (but I still maintain that doing it on the same line is a better idea). I've just never really jived with the whole "rules for this one trope and nothing else".

I agree. In fact, I think we should go even farther and ditch the bullet-meme-note format entirely and just write the examples like we do everything else on the site.

I mean, that feels a little too far and would likely need an entire TRS just to discuss; bringing indentation in line with the rest of the site, though, feels less of an uphill battle.

That's probably at least a discussion for the linked thread and not for the cleanup.

• Memetic Mutation:
  • While the situations and motivations of both characters are notably different from the other's, some Western fans nevertheless like to poke fun at Taku's predicament by comparing him to Walter White. To a lesser extent, fans would add to the joke by likening Towa, Fujieda, and Toono to Jesse Pinkman, Saul Goodman, and Gustavo Fring respectively.
  • Many have joked about how Towa's new hairstyle in Taku's good ending resembles a Motherly Side Plait (also known as the "dead anime mom hair").
  • More than one fan has commented that Inada's character design makes him look like someone who came straight out of My Hero Academia.

This is on YMMV.The Ghost And Molly Mc Gee, I’ve never seen it anywhere else and it seems like a huge stretch to me.

• Memetic Mutation:
  • "The Ghost and Molly McGee is just a slice of life version of Kamen Rider Revice".^Explanation Despite the latter airing first, this doesn't stop fans of the latter to see this show as that, despite the latter being live-action and the two having near similar themes. For those who don't know, the show's premise involves the main character forging an unlikely partnership with his inner demon, similar to Molly's symbiotic relationship with Scratch.
