Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Yeah, that’s not exactly how it seems. Lara is a member of the White Court who feed on emotion, namely those generated by lust and sex. At the climax of Turn Coat, said cousin betrays the court and mortally wounds Lara to the point of her being a crisped husk, flexing her to feed on her fatally to survive.

It’s a bit ambiguous if any sex happens given it opens with Lara ripping her guts out while using her powers to drain her alive, but it’s basically when Lara has the choice of that or dying.

Not something that effects her qualifications IMO.

I mean she’s a sex vampire by nature, but that’s not exactly her fault. She and her sisters are really victims of their horrific father. (Who regularly raped and fed off them to keep them under his control)

Raith also tricks his kids into giving up their virginities as ways to off guys he doesn't like judging by blood rites. If a white court vampire loses their virginity to Somone there's not in love with, than their doomed to exitsnce as an incubus/succuvus for eternity.

He really earned his Complete Monster spot.....

He's listed as a Hate Sink. I personally hate the character, but should I remove that from his character page?

I do have reservations with the character, but I want to get that out of the way first.

I wouldn't say Cut it...yet. I'd say get some of your issues out of the way first.

As discussed on the Hate Sink clenaup thread, Hate Sink is about Authorial Intentions when writing a charachter instead of How the audience reacts to a charachter(Hence why it isn't a YMMV trope)And the writers seem to have deliberately wanted Clifford to be Hateable.

I try to be open about what's written as a trope entry, since misuse is still aplenty (always going to have flashbacks to TDK!Talia's Defiant to the End moment being written off as a Smug Snake characteristic by someone). As Kylo said, it's possible the writer meant for him to be utterly despised but just eff'd up, or there might be something we need to talk about. Tbh I haven't seen the show and I don't recall the discussion, so I may just glance over it and see what was/wasn't covered.

My issue with Devoe is that, as he grows more Evil His begins to show rather dickish behavior to his wife. To give an idea there a this from his trope page.

All Take and No Give: How his relationship with Marlize seems to play out. She builds his tech, keeps him as healthy as possible, and helps him evade the eye of the law, making her a target for Team Flash as well, and he doesn't even have to say "thank you." Even worse, she's completely fine with this arrangement as long as he remains alive and successful in his plans, and he knows this.

And issue number two for me, is...Devoe is a bit too fond of violence. As, Ironancally one of his best scenes shows this

Well, I should announce my reservations then.

He is an Invincible Villain by the second half of the season, very clearly abusive to his wife, and has been for years. In addition, halfway through the season, he gets incredible powers, and basically only loses because he spends so much time dicking with the heroes for more powers. He's also lacking in charisma. He only has one person who really likes him (Marlize) and he eventually drugs her and mind-controls her the moment she gets uncomfortable. He's also such an Invincible Villain that by the end, he basically has no excuse not to win. Yeah, he lies to the public, but there's not really much to that because he fakes his own death not too far into his storyline and is constantly switching bodies.

Before the halfway point, I'd have considered him this for certain, but then it turns out his plan is even more absurd and narcissistic than they build it to be: He wants to literally replace humanity with himself because he's so full of himself. He's even retconned to the point where they reveal this was always his plan. He didn't endure Sanity Slippage or end up Drunk on the Dark Side, he was just always evil and his entire goal is brought about by his own ego. It is a harsh and brutal retcon to be sure, but it is canon.

Don't get me wrong, he's Wicked Cultured, and his plans almost work out, but he's utterly full of himself, lacks proper charisma, and seems to constantly pass up perfectly good chances to just win already because of his own ego and Complexity Addiction. Yeah, he's good at lying to the public, but he basically only has to do that briefly throughout the first half of the season, and it's not like it's a particularly difficult endeavor. He basically has to pretend he's a normal professor who Barry's aggressive to, but Barry's such an idiot about it that it's nowhere near difficult. The heroes all quickly come to hate him, the public thinks he's dead (Again, not a difficult or smooth endeavor, he literally switched bodies) and he just doesn't seem to be too much in terms of charisma, especially with the massive power advantage he has over everyone.

Oh, yeah, and by mentally killing his good side, he literally creates his own Achilles' Heel, and is thus completely responsible for his own defeat.

I could easily be wrong, though. There's a reason we put these things to vote instead of just letting me make decisions. Sorry about going on so long.

Ah, I got the weird case where I got more MB candidates than CM. And I'm proud to discuss them.

I wanted to do it tomorrow because is my birthday, But I realized I likely would be too busy to doing so. So I will start today.

Setting?

Digimon Xros Wars. NOT the anime, that I haven't seen. The manga is notorious for changing many things and going in its own plot.

I haven't see the anime, so I wouldn't compare them at all. But, well...

Who is Bagramon?

The Big Bad, he used to be a archangel digimon that lived alongside Homoestasis, the digital deity after Ygrdrassil defeat in Digimon Savers.

He wondered why some digimons were based on heroes and others in villainous things, especially due to his brother, Skull Knightmon, who was discriminated for his existence while he was in a good position.

Bagramon revealed against Homoestasis due to the deity design that would lead to the death of his brother at hands of a "hero" digimon due to being a "evil" digimon. He fell and was exilled, during said exile he managed to find Ygdrassil's remains and taking parts of it, fusing with them and becoming a sage. Discovering that the Digimon of the past had the ability to digivolve, a skill that the Digimon had simply lost from the universe where the series is set. He also discovered that this happened because of human hearts, because humans always give up and forget their dreams, stagnating in despair and sadness.

Seeing that both Digimon and humans were doomed with no chance to save their species from decay, Bagramon uses his new powers to revive extinct Digimon and create digimon, including his greatest creation: Tactimon, one of the strongest digimon ever armed with a sword made from the data of the legendary sword of Susanoomon.

He recruits several "evil"/ dark Digimon for their cause, including Lilithmon and Blastmon, thus creating the Bagra Army and eventually, invading the heavens, manaking to defeat the legendary Omegamon of the Royal Knights with the help of Tactimon, who releases the power of his sword during his battle against Ulforce V-dramon and breaks the digital world into many parts.

Bagramon decides to look for the 108 fragments of the Crown Codes, in order to reconstruct it and begins to perform an experiment that will decide the fate of both the Real World and the Digital World. Bagramon creates the Xros Loaders, and gives his brother the knowledge about the Digi Xros alongside with helpers Shademon and Damemon / Tuwamon so that they help him to overcome by himself the curse to which he was subjected at birth. Eventually, Bagramon invokes two humans who possess a powerful Code Xros ,the power born of someone who fights for their dreams to the end to become the counterpart of their experiment, and see if humans have the ability to save the World.

Bagramon's experiment was to see if Desperation was stronger than Hope, or vice versa, and see which of the two forces was capable of saving the World. With his brother as despair and the humans as hope.

During the final assault of Xros Heart United Army to the Great Demonic Castle, Bagramon concludes that his experiment is a failure to see the monstrous form born out of forceful fusions (Digimon fuse with each other to fight now given that evolution doesn't exist anymore) that Dark Knightmon (his brother fused form) has taken in his quest for power.

Using his Invisible Snake Eyes, Bagramon locates the place where the Millenniummon clone was sent. Revealing that Shademon, seemingly Dark Knightmon's Dragon had always been his spy to inform him about the progress of Dark Knightmon, Bagramon invokes to Millenniummon using his space-time powers, and makes a Digi Xros between Dark Knightmon and Millenniummon creating a Zeed Millenniummon, the feared Digimon of the reddish-black dragon's prophecy that begins to absorve the entire worlds.

Bagramon decides to stay to observe the end of the universe of which he believes there is no hope of saving him, hoping to give a Mercy Kill to the existence.

When The Hero Taiki and his friends appear to rescue Nene and find a way to undo the Digi Xros that make up Zeed Millenniummon, Bagramon confronts them, determined not to let anyone get into their plans. Taiki remains fighting against him, and Bagramon reveals his motivations.

When Shoutmon appears on the battlefield, Bagramon recognizes in him the code (basically digimon's soul) of Omegamon, implying that perhaps Shoutmon is the reincarnation of the Royal Knight.

When Zeed Millenniummon is defeated, Bagramon is surprised to see that Hope still remains in human hearts, but soon he goes into despair when he sees that the truly evil Digimon are free and that Chaosmon will destroy everything in their path. However, Shoutmon makes him see reason, and Bagramon decides that the world still has hope to see how the Digimon recover the power of digievolución.

Bagramon decides to use his body as a shield to save his still surviving brother Skull Knightmon from the attack of other digimon, defeating his opponent, but being mortally wounded. Before dying, he asks his brother to change and become a Knight Holy, encouraging him to be more than what his data says.

In the final chapter, Skull Knightmon carries one of his horns as memory and Homoestasis carrying the digiegg in where Bagramon will be reborn.

Smart?

He created the Xros Loaders, freaking Tactimon and many other amazing things. He manipulated his brother as part of his experiments and ultimately, he took control of the plot until the very last chapter, where the manace in a product of his defeat. His defeat was due to him understimating humanity's emotions, not something that pure logic could have predicted.

Dude is smart, sure, he is like this because he had parts of Ygdrassil on him, but he was the one that puts them there.

Charisma?

He is beloved for his army, Tactimon and Lilithmon are utterly loyal to him, with Lilithmon having a outright crush on him.

His punishment to Lilithmon was very cruel, but he did it to punish her from destroying parts of the digital world in her fits of rage and being a sadist, saying that he just wants to kill his enemies quickly.

And when Lilithmon recovered...she was pretty much glad for it, because she's a sadomasochist. Is Lilithmon after all tongue.

He drops a Single Tear, a sincere, painful tear when he sees what his brother had become and is utterly determined to Mercy Kill the worlds, stopping once he realize there was a other way.

Bastard?

He leads a powerful destructive army and also wants to Mercy Kill the worlds. Oh yeah.

Said this, he isn't a sadic and clearly punish Lilithmon for being needlessy cruel. He loves his brother, he respect the determination of others.

Verdict?

I give him a hearty [tup]

Another EP, this time from a series with a ridiculously overlayered plot that I legit enjoyed as I do with those type of series.

Setting

World Embryo is a manga by the creator of Chrono Crusade, Moriyama Daisuke.

Riku Amami, your average Ordinary High-School Student, receives a message from his long-lost step-aunt and adoptive sister (complicated family tree, his father is marrying a younger woman who had a even younger sister), Amane.

He goes to the hospital and ends up discovering the existence of the Kanshuu, monsters that exist thanks to a infection that spreads via cellphones. Riku is attacked by them but is saved for his best friend, part of a organization named FLAG, and finds a mysterious cocoon, which once Riku touches it promptly kills the Kanshuu. The next day Riku wakes up in his bed and wonders if it all was a dream. Then he spots the cocoon sitting next to his bed.

Later that day at school, when the egg hatches, is not a monster, but a little girl closely resembling Amane when she was only a kid...

The story is...long and extremely full of twists. Now, out first candidate is nothing but...Amane herself.

Who is Amane Sanamori

Amane Amami after her sister married Riku's father, she really was adopted as the Sole Survivor of a accident that killed the mother of his adoptive sister.

It turned out that Amane was the only person able to see the Embryo after the lethal accident on Masaki island, that retconned the city out of existence. She grew up lonely but she kept a smile, even if knowing the Awful Truth of humanity (all of humans are already Kanshuu, is just that the infection breaks the illusion mask. It isn't really as awful as the plot implies, but eh).

Amane had the power to help the victims of Lost Rebound, survivors of Kanshuu attacks with memory lost and works together with Tougo's brother, who eventually betrayed and tried to capture her for experiments of FLAG in order to try to discover her real nature.

...the experiment goes badly and the brother is trapped inside the Embryo, driving him to insanity.

Now, Amane goes there and becomes a Coffin Princess, she recreates herself into a chrysalid that she sends to his brother Riku, that one being Neene.

Amane realizes that the Embryo is going to collapse and spill its corruption to the world, driving everyone to insanity in a way that nothing could be saved. So Amane desires to turn everyone into Kanshus herself and thus save their minds at the very least. However, to do this, Amane takes the role of villain.

Eventually, taking advantage of Shirou Kurosawa's plans, Amane is able to use Neene's body as her own. Becoming the Coffin Pricess Amane and spreading the infecction while breaking the masquerade of FLAG and NEFT.

Riku defies her and Neene promises to play a game in which if FLAG wins, she will spread the infection but she will give up if she loses.

The day of the game, Amane plays the game and forces the users to fight memories of their loved ones until she reveals that it was a plan to attrack all the Jinki users and thus being able to traspass the barries put for the Coffin princess Julie.

She almost suceeds if it wasn't for The Heroine Rena and Anti-Hero Takao, who manage to ruin her plans, with Takao personally killing her interrupting her fight with Riku...before Rena's herself is possesed for the despair of the deaths of the island due to the Embryo's curruption.

Rena recover and becomes a new coffin princess, but Amane's mind is erases. As she is erased, she orders Neene to help Rena and apologizes to Riku, truly sorry of her actions.

Smart?

Amane was able to play organizations and her own brother, who proved being a effective Guile Hero thought the series. She is no lacking in wits, being a effective Manipulator. Her defeat is product of the plans of Anti-Hero Takao, who is another smart guy himself, and the power of Rena interrupting her suddenly.

Bastard

Amane is legit trying to save humanity, but her methods are far from harmless. She turns many humans in kanshuus, she takes the body of a little girl and is willing to let his brother see her as a villain even if that causes him psychological damage.

However, Amane truly loves her family, she is a Nice Girl moved into a role that requires at least some inhumanity.

Charisma?

Amane was a Nice Girl in her previous life and when returned as a villain, she quickly left a impact as a impossing, scary enemy. All her presentation as villain involves her likeable personality.

Yeah.

Verdict?

I say [tup]
