All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

Do we need a TRS to put a trope in No Examples, Please or at least No Straight Examples, Please!? Or can they be discussed elsewhere?

[up]I'm pretty sure No Straight Examples, Please! does, as do Definition-Only Pages and No On-Page Examples. No Recent Examples, Please! and No Real Life Examples, Please! can be added to via TRS, but they have cleanup threads that can add to those indexes without TRS.

Found two tropes that I think could be merged. They're near starvation, though, and one of them has a ton of not-crosswicked on-page examples. Should I crosswick first before doing the check?

Sci-Fi is typed and indexed as a disambiguation page but is written like a definition page (but it's not listed on Definition-Only Pages). Worth taking to TRS to make it a Definition-Only Page?

TRS is. I fail to see how it differs from Science Fiction even after reading, and it seem to go on unrelated tangents.

Does it need "For further details" links meanwhile?

[up][up]Take to TRS, but honestly, I think it works better as a redirect to Science Fiction, with the info about "Sci-Fi" being considered semi-insulting by some fans of the genre rolled into the description. Because I think to most people, the two are the same without any difference anyways and I'm pretty sure they're being used interchangeably on this site.

Redirecting to Science Fiction makes sense. I'll take this to the TRS when the time comes. Thanks for the feedback.

Quick question, doing the Not Good With People clean up and I'm running into a lot of examples for No Social Skills that is basically just "this character is awkward / doesn't like people / has a hard time speaking with people"

From the description of No Social Skills, these are incorrect right? NSS is not just "a character is socially awkward", it's "a character cannot/has a hard time understanding basic human interaction". The latter usually begets the former, but the former =/= the latter. Or am I interpreting the trope too narrowly?

Colloquially, No Social Skills refers to any degree of social awkwardness, so while the literal meaning of the name may be correct and appropriate, it's still misleading.

~molokai198 Sorry to ask again, but since you seem to have done wick checks on your two tropes, is it at all possible to copy and paste the contents of them into Sandboxes so we can see the results? I'm fairly certain the threads won't be opened/survive long if they don't have visible wick checks.

[up][up][up]Gender Misdirection is done, so maybe Main.Surprisingly Good Foreign Language (for the merge of it and Main.Surprisingly Good English into SugarWiki.Surprisingly Good Foreign Language) could be swapped in at 253 wicks (Main.Surprisingly Good English has a four-digit wick count, so it'll take longer).

[up][up] I was using a sandbox for something else and I'm having trouble getting them to work, when I write in it and save it doesn't actually show up. I might redo the wick checks anyway since I was very inexperienced at wick checks when I did them, but first I need to figure out how to get the sandbox to work.

[up] Huh, that's weird.

Have you created Sandbox.Cant Refuse The Call Anymore Wick Check and Sandbox.Broken Messiah Wick Check from red links and pasted the contents in both?

If that didn't work, is your personal sandbox usable?

For a while I've noticed a lot of widespread misuse of Alternate Self on the wiki, mostly to the tune of adding it as an "example" with the only content being a statement that a different adaptation exists, while the trope or character themselves shows no actual use of the trope.

Usually the justification for this is that somewhere within a particular franchise a work exists (but not the work where the trope is added) that includes a multiverse, but that in itself is not a reason to add the trope wholesale to pages in which they're not relevant.

Is it worth adding to Trope Repair Shop as a Misused trope?

[up] Do a wick check first. How to Do a Wick Check explains how. You can also get help from the Wick Check Project thread.

If a significant misuse pattern is found, add it to the TRS Queue and you'll be pinged/your thread launched (depending on what you decide) when your slot is reached.
