All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

For related projects, see Wick Cleaning Projects and the Wick Check Project.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

It seems to be "Fanfic Recommendations but for Youtube videos", so... maybe????

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

I finally finished my wick check for Pet-Peeve Trope and added it to the TRS Queue. I generated a list of wicks for Refrain from Assuming because the fact that the concept of audiences making mistakes isn't tagged as YMMV has been bugging me for a while; since Refrain from Assuming was already listed on the Wick Check Project sandbox, I linked to my sandbox there, but I won't add it to the TRS Queue until it's done (whenever that is, since it took me a while to finish the check for Pet-Peeve Trope).

Neglected to mention that I removed my wick check sandbox for Refrain from Assuming from the Wick Check Project sandbox since I'm not doing it as part of that project, but I'm not going to put the "Tropes awaiting wick checks" listing back since I'm working on that part.

Whole-Plot Reference has an "index" pagetype, but allows examples (3660 wicks aside) that don't fit in any specific plot subtropes, is it set incorrectly? (Only asking here because I did so before, there doesn't appear to be a designated pagetype thread.)

Maybe we can revive the Page Type Correction thread for questions like this.

Anyways, it should be set to trope + index. If we want to do an example sectionectomy, that would need further discussion so I'll fix the page type so that it accurately reflects the page.

Forgot about that thread despite posting there before. Probably because it's a rather rare kind of problem.

I finished my wick check of Refrain from Assuming and added it to the TRS Queue. It wound up being directly after my listing for Pet-Peeve Trope since nobody else took any slots after the latter.

The check confirmed my suspicion that it's an Audience Reaction that was mistakenly classified as objective.

Sorry for the double post, but I mentioned the fact that pings don't work in TRS opening posts (which I ran into problems with in this thread) to the admins. Macron (who said they don't work in IP opening posts either) and I are currently discussing it with them and they said they'll look into it.

Is this where we talk about what's YMMV and what's not?

Because if I'm right, and YMMV is when the core of an idea is about what a audience member does, instead of what the work does, then Item Farming is either a Chairs response to Random Drop, or YMMV.

Yes, if Item Farming isn't 1. Mentioned in the work, like game-themed series. or 2. An intentional mechanic, like exaggerated 20 Bear Asses or there besing a designated area for it. Then it's slipping into Fan Speak. A wick check is needed to see if it's just a terminology or it's invoked significant amount of times.

[up][up]I think Trope Talk would be preferable to using this thread.

It's been brought up that Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop says that TRS can also be used for work pages despite the name. However, I don't think we do that any more as there are multiple places work page problems can go to. Should we remove that line?

I can't think of an issue for a work page that would warrant a separate thread besides Image Pickin and Content Policy Review, which are at own forums.

When it was added to the policy page, I wonder if it was meant to cover edge cases, though I can't think of any examples now. Or it was written when all types of pages could be freely created without YKTTW/TLP and the line between trope and work less distinct, so they were just included.

I do remember seeing a work page get TRS'd once but I don't remember what the circumstances were. It was certainly an odd case where many people questioned if it was even allowed. T'was back before the thread limit, when people could just make threads whenever and that one got opened.

Edit: Think I found the thread?

I'm in favor of discontinuing the usage of TRS for work pages due to the reduced amount of slots. Note that this is just my opinion and not a mod statement; I might bring this up for discussion with the other mods.

OK, so I got some more feedback and I updated Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop to remove the part about work pages being brought to TRS and added new text saying they belong in Projects instead of TRS, and I also added a new part saying that things classified as Not a Trope, like YMMV and Trivia pages, are allowed on TRS despite "Trope" being in the name.

I do remember there were a couple times a trope page was made in a work namespace in order to get around going through the TLP (Roleplay.Jumpchain and Fanfic.Planetarily Annihilating Self Insertion); were those sorts of pages what it was talking about?

I moved my Pet-Peeve Trope entry on the TRS Queue below The Mayor of Simpleton's most recent entry (which itself is the most recent entry period) partially because I already thought Refrain from Assuming needed TRS more than Pet-Peeve Trope (I simply ended up doing a wick check for the latter before the former), and partially because I don't want to end up having two consecutive threads (the fact that I did before I decided to delay the Pet-Peeve Trope thread a bit was a coincidence; it happened because nobody else added a draft between the two I added).

Yeah, thanks for that. I removed it from the Queue since I already had the editor opened.

Also, should the Diagnosed by the Audience cleanup thread (as it's now known) be moved to Long-Term Projects, or is it fine in Short-Term?
