YMMV.Diary Of An Awesome Friendly Kid lists Greg as a scrappy. Let's go through the criteria and check:

  • Unintentionally hated: Eh, I'm not sure about this one. I think the point of this book is to show that Greg is an Unreliable Narrator.
  • Hated by the majority: Yep, most of the complaints about this book relate to Greg.
  • A hated character: Yes, Greg is a single character.
  • Hated for narrative reasons: I think this one is more directed at video game or film characters, and yes, Greg is hated for what he does in the novel.
  • Hated by the fans: I've seen both actual fans and ironic fans complaining about Greg's behavior.
  • Consistently hated: Here's the problematic one. Greg is usually a well-received character in the Wimpy Kid books, but as this is a spin-off, does it count? The author has expressed interest in writing more Awesome Friendly Kid books, so would this criteria be true if Greg continued to be unlikable in future books?
The things I'm not sure about are "consistently hated" or "unintentionally hated." I'd say to remove it for now, since it has to pass all the criteria.

[up] Yea, I'd say cut it for now. Maybe he could qualify for a Hate Sink entry for that spinoff if you really wanted to go there.

Anyways, can a character be Rescued from the Scrappy Heap multiple times, without doing anything that puts them back into The Scrappy status?

YMMV.Luigis Mansion Dark Moon just had an entry for Polterpup made under The Scrappy. My understanding was that fan reaction was 'D'awww, what a cute ghost doggy!' with people hoping he'd appear in subsequent games, and the game itself says he was just lonely, mischievous, and wanted someone to play with, with Luigi feeling ambivalent towards him.

I have a feeling someone added that entry because Chuggaaconroy showed his disdain for the Polterpup during his Let's Play of the game.

Maybe. I definitely can't find evidence of the entire fandom hating him.

It’s especially odd as they point out that the Polterpup is Rescued from the Scrappy Heap in the game’s ending. Especially given the game’s short length, I can’t imagine that many who played the game had their negative initial reception stick.

Actually, I think the “Hated for narrative reasons” requirement is a disqualifier anyway.

[up]Related I deleted the following from Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE:

It fails to explain why they're unintentionally hated and the story is ongoing so maybe it's intentional. Thoughts on a two-week waiting period for this trope?

Personally, I think two weeks sounds way too short. I'd personally prefer around 6 months, like the Broken Base and Base-Breaking Character audience reactions.

[up]Agree, as Base-Breaking Character and The Scrappy are mutually exclusive it makes no scene to approve one before the other.

I think this is the 5th or so time it's come up. Can we get a crowner for this yet

UPDATE: From Pokémon:

  • Dawn's contest rival Ursula gets some general dislike for being very one-dimensional compared to all the rival characters in the show, lacking the Character Development that rivals like Gary got and not being as interesting as others like Paul and Harrison and just being an irritating character in general.

The page says all entries have to be discussed here. Cut for now?

[up] What about all the different types of scrappies like Ethnic Scrappies and Damsel Scrappies? Should they get a waiting period too?

As for that Pokemon entry, this entry sounds legit, though I might be missing some context as to why it's being discussed here.

Speaking of Damsel Scrappies:

Although this isn't the regular Scrappy, it still breaks the rule of being consistently hated. I don't think she counts if she was hated for this game. Thoughts?

I think these examples should be removed from YMMV.TF Wiki Dot Net should be removed: in addition to lacking context, they fall in the same boat as "character a reviewer/let's player hates", which this thread has stated isn't The Scrappy, even In-Universe.

  • The Scrappy:
    • Kicker Jones and Daniel Witwicky.
    • It's clear that the editors really hate Martin and Roland from the G1 episode B.O.T..
    • The titular Beast from the G1 comic The Beast Within. The wiki doesn't have a single nice thing to say about it or its comic.

[up][up][up] Since those variants aren't necessarily Scrappies (Replacement at least can apply to Base-Breaking Characters) and they're specific enough to avoid the misuse Scrappy gets, I'm fine leaving them.

I would like to add D'Vorah to Mortal Kombats' The Scrappy page. The criteria: - Unintentionally hated: Not sure on this one, to be honest. In the games she's appeared in so far (Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11) it's been made clear that not many of the characters like her and those who ally with her do so either out of necessity or get betrayed/killed by her later on, so it could be she's supposed to be hateable. Then again, she gets a lot of screen-time for someone who's supposed to be just a simple hate sink and whenever she is on screen she's presented as a very capable warrior to almost creator's pet levels. - Hated by the Majority: Yep, the majority of the fandom really doesn't like her, mostly because she comes out of nowhere, shows signs of being a creator's pet with how frequently and prominently she's featured in the bad guy-lineup and kills off multiple beloved legacy characters in the story modes, i.e. Baraka. - A Hated Character: Yes, D'Vorah is a playable character in the game. - Hated for narrative reasons: In the games she appears in, she is despised for being a backstabber and just unpleasant overall. - Hated by fans: Yes, as above mentioned, fans hate D'Vorah because she pretty much shows up in the story out of nowhere in MKX, kills fan-favorite Baraka, double-crosses the main cast for Quan Chi in the end and gets away with it scot-free. In MK 11 she once again just shows up, kills a massively popular character, then leaves and is never shown again. - Consistently hated: Yes, fans hated her just as much in Mortal Kombat 11 as they did in Mortal Kombat X.

Someone just added Polterkitty as a scrappy to YMMV.Luigis Mansion 3. The character violates the "must be hated for narrative reasons" criterium, and also possibly the negative reception being unintentional. I'd have removed it myself already, but I only have my phone to browse right now.

Was flipping through random media pages and came across YMMV.The Sims.

  • Bella Goth has gotten a surprising amount of detractors, since the developers seem to make sure that she is in absolutely every game, and because she is often made out to be the "perfect sim", both in appearance and in character.
  • Mrs. Crumplebottom from The Sims 2, who is an Expy to the the first Miss Crumplebottom (Agnes) who appeared in both the prequel and sequel, is just as obnoxious as the former, but does not have her sympathetic backstory.
  • Marsha Bruenig: a townie in Pleasantview. Once you meet her, she will NEVER stop calling, even at night and during school! Unless, of course, the player uses mods to put the kibosh on such behavior. Some simmers actually regard her with fear.
  • The Nanny, who will bring your toddler bottle after bottle, even when the toddler's not hungry. And set the house on fire while cooking. To make matters worse, she won't leave your house even after you've dismissed her!
  • The Mascots from The Sims 2 University are pretty universally loathed, since all they do is intrude on your personal space, do mean things, or flirt with you to ruin your relationships. The cheerleaders to a lesser extent, though they are more of a slight annoyance.
  • Sims in earlier games with low nice scores are generally disliked since they make keeping relationships difficult, as they autonomously go for mean interactions.
  • A lot of Simmers are annoyed by babysitters in The Sims 3 because they will either neglect the baby or constantly bother him/her when all needs are full. Also, if there is a baby swing and the baby is in it, the sitter will often set the swing on fast, making the baby cranky and sick.
  • The Ottomas family from Seasons. They are ugly, bugged, can even corrupt the game, and Samantha gives birth to the most hideous twins in the world.
  • Angela is commonly considered "bland and boring" by many in the Fandom, most of whom prefer Lilith's more interesting rebellious and cynical personality.
  • Speaking of Pleasants, both Daniel and Mary-Sue are quite unpopular with some people, given their generally selfish behavior.
  • Katrina Caliente has received a fair bit of criticism from fans, mostly for being a white woman who replaced an already established middle-eastern character.

Bella Goth is too popular to qualify as a scrappy, and is a Base-Breaking Character at worst. Mrs. Crumplebottom always seemed like an intentional Hate Sink and not a scrappy, since her whole purpose is to punish romantic sims and its not something where she's unintentionally bad at a job. Marsha, the nanny and the Ottomas family are legitimate examples but I don't know if the latter violates the "groups cannot be scrappies" rule since the entire family is disliked. "Sims with no nice scores" is too vague and can be cut, and Katrina can be cut since the reason she's hated is nothing to do with her character in the narrative (seems more like They Changed It, Now It Sucks!).

I'm illiterate. Superman 64 has a better characters than The Last of Us Part II.

I've said this before but nobody responded, but I think that TheScrappy.Friendship Is Failure should be cut, because it feels like this page was created to complain about the fic and its characters (which violates the criteria of it having to be hated by fans). Opinions?

I found this entry on YMMV.Star Vs The Forces Of Evil

  • Oskar gained contempt from a considerable part of the fandom after his appearance in "Starcrushed", where he was portrayed as a delusional fool who dropped school to pursue a dubious musical career and acts hostile towards Star when she questions his absurd fantasies. The fact that he also suggested Star to replace Marco as her adventure partner made things worse (especially to Starco shippers). His new haircut didn't help him either.

I don’t know about you guys, but from the description I think they were trying to make you hate him on purpose, while at the same time they decided to have him be this because the writers decided to derail one of Star’s love interests. What do you guys think?

The Web Original folder has this:

  • Not really a character in general, but a site, Teefury sells $10 shirts daily which are focused on pop-culture. However, Doctor Who shirts are pretty much too popular on the site where people who don't know who Dr. Who is or find it overrated tend to get annoyed by the selection.

  1. This example is about shirts, not characters, so it breaks the "hater character" rule. It even starts with "Not really a", which is often a sign of Square Peg, Round Trope.
  2. The example says that Doctor Who shirts are "too popular" and that only people who aren't Doctor Who fans hate them, so it breaks the "hated by the fans" rule.
  3. Shirts have little room for narrative, so they probably break the "hated for narrative reasons" rule.
  4. I think the example may be stealth advertising of the site. T-shirt sellers disguising their advertisements as regular web content is a major Berserk Button of mine.

This is a clear "nuke with extreme prejudice" example, but the comments on the page say that I should mention it here before removing it.

[up]Zap it if you haven't already.

I removed the following from YMMV.Luigis Mansion 3.

  • The Scrappy: Very few players seem to like the Polterkitty, mostly because it fills the same "housepet that steals something important, forcing the player to backtrack to areas they’ve already been" role that the Polterpup had in the last game. While the latter is forgiven by most fans for being cute and comedic in it’s antics (plus the fact that it was only acting up because of the Dark Moon shattering), the former doesn’t have a single redeeming trait, with it's intentionally mean, antagonistic personality and terrible meowing and beast growl sounds. Even worse, you’re required to fight it as a miniboss exactly six times with a repetitive and annoying strategy to boot. While this may have been intentionally designed as a Hate Sink, some say it worked a bit too well.

Besides admitting most of it is intentional, the only unintentional part is covered under Goddamned Boss and gameplay reasons are exempt from this trope.

Thought on waiting period for Scrappy: six months OR forum approval. This compromise would allow time to determine if possible examples are Base-Breaking Characters or not but allow any definite examples to be added by those who want a shorter waiting period.
