Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.

Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.

For cleaning up examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard, you must use their dedicated threads: Complete Monster Cleanup, Magnificent Bastard Cleanup.

VideoGame.Sonic Adventure

  • Karma Houdini: The True Final Boss, who, while defeated and rendered docile in the end, still destroyed Station Square and by rights should have killed thousands of people. He gets an utterly unironic Happy Ending.

Something about this example dosen't sit right with me. According to his character page, the Chaos Emeralds caused him to go berserk, which is how we got to the point of him wasting Station Square (it's also implied that the whole thing didn't kill anyone either).

Can someone truly be considered a Karma Houdini if they didn't have agency over what they caused? It's also complainy to boot.

I have a question about the trope Fandom Rivalry.

Let's say that there's Fandom A and Fandom B. Fandom B attacks A, but the members of Fandom A never attacks B, sometimes joining Fandom B in attacking A instead, or just not bothering with any form of aggression.

Can that count as a Fandom Rivalry if there's no aggression from one side, making the rivalry and aggression just feel one-sided?

I dont think we need any more IRL fandom driven drama tropes.

Not an example, then? Because currently there's one found in the VG section and for now I just sent it to 'Removing negativity' thread, but I just have to make sure it actually counts as an example or not when I actually build up the fixing.

If the consensus says 'please nuke it, we don't need drama', then please confirm. I don't mind any outcome. (If it's decided to be nuked, then I don't need to build up the fixing post at all to save time)

[up][up] OOPS! Sorry! I thought this was the Trope Idea thread not the this is an example thread! I made a major mistake.

To make up for this I will help you. I dont think its a Fandom Rivalry if one fandom doesnt retaliate.

Usually what I see is that Fandom A becomes exclusionary and resentful or a Fan Hater towards Fandom B, which might count?

#27961: Jun 9th 2023 at 9:41:22 PM

That just feels like a normal Fan Hater example. Like Aegis said, I think both sides need to retaliate against each other in order to count.

Too bad the trope Fan Hater is In Universe Only and we can't add up real life example.

That's a wrap, I guess.

This was just added to YMMV.Steven Universe:

  • Audience-Alienating Era: Fans tend to give this label to the post-Summer of Steven era, where the show's Broken Base got out of control. The Schedule Slip went from bad to borderline intolerable (with a gap of seven months between episodes at one point), not helped by Cartoon Network's constant leaking habits. It made the already slower-paced and somewhat lower-staked fourth season and early fifth season feel borderline glacial, especially when multiple "Stevenbomb" special events turned out to be dedicated largely to smaller-scale stories. The Myth Stall certainly didn't help, either, nor did a number of episodes that read as contrary to the show's messages (and, unfortunately, the changing political landscape). The pendulum seems to have swung back in the show's favor as of the "Heart of the Crystal Gems" special, though.

The Wall of Text and redlinked trope aside (I think they meant Arc Fatigue?), is this really Audience-Alienating Era? The last sentence also runs foul of Examples Are Not Recent given it's been years since Heart of the Crystal Gems (and there have been plenty of different discourses that came after it).

I need help, I got about 2 problems with one example from this movie. This might take a while.

1. So I was reporting an example of Celeb Crush from a Filipino movie called Fangirl on ATT query. After the troper resolved the problem, I noticed that the example sounds like Broken Pedestal instead of Celeb Crush. Here's the example:

  • Celeb Crush: While Jane is still enamored with Avelino when she meets him in person, by the end of the movie she wants nothing to do with him afterwards. Not only is he inconsiderate, he also sexually assaults her and puts her life as well as his son's life at risk near the end of the movie.
2. * Trigger Warning: SA * So there's a part in the example where the op says that the celebrity SA'd the main character who is a teenager. Long story short: I think that the SA part is Questionable Consent at first and was about to make the QC example because I have watch this movie before and know the context (you can look up at some replies at the ATT query link above) but the troper said it's not actually QC for the good reason. Now I realize not only that the second troper is right but it's also counts as statutory rape maybe.

So I have some questions, should I change this Celeb Crush example into Broken Pedestal example and maybe rewrite the Celeb Crush with Deconstructed trope on it? And what do you think of the second problem and what to do with it? Note: I'm not trying to downplay a disgusting crime. Sorry about it.

Is this a valid example of Polyamory?

* In a truly bizarre example, the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic episode "Hard to Say Anything" has Sweetie Belle pairing up Feather Bangs, who had just lost to Big Mac in a contest to win somepony's love, with the three fangirls who had been following him throughout the episode. It's not even a matter of "Pick one," she just encourages him to go with all three of them, and nopony acknowledges this as being out of the ordinary. Perhaps it's just another example of real-life horse behaviour leaking into pony society.

While the show eventually featured lesbian couples in the final season (both explicit and heavily implied), I'm not sure if this is an implied poly relationship since it's not shown if Feather and the trio of mares do hook up after Sweetie's suggestion.

I found this on Demonic Spiders

  • Lynels make a comeback in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which happens to be their first appearance in a 3D game, and they're even harder this time around. They're found across Hyrule rather than just Death Mountain, and are able to keep up with Link on horseback as well as carrying various elemental arrows to kill the player before they can even get close. They have between 2000-5000 HP (compare to the 200 you'd find on a Moblin or Lizalfos), resistance to all forms of elemental damage, and if by some miracle you manage to get close they can easily one-shot an unprepared player with a massive sword or axe. They're also smarter than most other enemies: if they notice Link, they don't always mindlessly charge, and may simply observe from a distance and wait for him to approach and initiate combat. If Link tries to hide behind a rock or a hill to avoid their arrows, they'll fire them in a high arc and hit Link from above instead. Finally, they are the only enemy in the game that can see through a disguise; if Link is wearing a Lynel Mask it will fool them for only a minute, as opposed to other enemies which never figure it out until either they see you attacking them or a nearby species that doesn't match the mask weeds you out. However, the Ancient Arrows can be used as a One-Hit Kill against them and other non-Guardian enemies, but players may be reluctant to use them at times due to the fact that it disintegrates them along with their equipment (meaning you get nothing from the kill).

I don't think lynels are an example in this case, mainly I don't think they're are common enough.

In the entire open world map of BOTW there is only ever 22 lynels. These are usually fairly isolated too, link is never required to fight one. I think a player could probably go the entire game without encountering one

In practice I think they're more like minibosses than normal enemies

[up]Agree. I say cut since they are like mini bosses.

Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition has this:

  • Hey, It's That Sound!: You may be able to recognize the song in these two dances. They were used on Dance Moms for the "Glam" and "I Want It Now" dances.

I don't think it counts since its a song reuse and not a sound reuse.

[up] Yeah, that does sound like Recycled Soundtrack instead of this example but I'll wait for other Tropers to decide on what to do with this example.

Also, can some of you guys check my and the others' previous posts please? Thanks.

This was just added to Spirited Away.

  • Americans Hate Tingle: Chihiro Ogino is simply disliked by many American Hayao Miyazaki fans, due to her sulking so often that it makes her come off as "whiny". But in Japan? Spirited Away and Chihiro were in 1st place as the highest-grossing film of all time and Titanic and Frozen were respectively in 2nd and 3rd place in Japan, according to the Japanese Wikipedia. This sentiment is usually just given to the character, since the movie is still beloved among Americans.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I haven't seen that much hate for Chihiro. If anything, I've seen a lot of people praise her for being a realistic and well-written child character.
