This is the sticky thread for questions related to the namespacing of works. As in, "which is the right namespace for this work?"
Ideally, questions already answered are covered on the Namespace Map. If you know a namespacing issue has already been resolved, but it is not yet documented on the Map, please update the Map.
If you want to suggest a new namespace, don't post here, but in Suggesting New Namespaces
instead.
For easier reference, I've numbered my questions:
- #1: Where do animated films go? They seem to be distributed rather inconsistenly over Film/ (Puss In Boots, Whats Opera Doc), WesternAnimation/ (Disneys Anne Frank, Snow White), Anime/ (Princess Mononoke) and Disney/ (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Der Fuehrers Face).
- #2: There are a few songs which have their own pages ("Pirate Jenny"). Where do they go – to Music/ or to Literature/ ?
- #3: Where do composers go – to Music/ , or are they to be treated like other creators, which hitherto stay on Main/ ?
- #4: Where do Talk Shows, Game Shows and News Broadcasts go? I guess you could call these formats Live-Action TV but they're not really "TV series", as in Series/.
- #5: Am I right in assuming that Puppet Shows go to Series/ ?
- #6: What about “hybrid shows”, i.e. segment shows that incorporate both live action and animation? (e.g. Die Sendung Mit Der Maus)
- #7: Where to put picture books? I am thinking of books like Der Struwwelpeter and Max and Moritz — books that are really not complete without their illustrations. They are not (yet) ComicBook/s, but to sort them under Literature/ feels a little unsatisfactory too.
- #8: The rule is to put works into the namespace of their original medium. However, once in a while there is a work which is little known in its original medium, and almost exclusively known by its adaptation. I’m thinking of Das Boot, for example: there's a novel, but it is almost exclusively known by the Petersen movie.
- #9: Should One Book Authors who are invariably tied to a single work be treated as a creator or a work page rather?— Currently, we have Samuel Pepys and Herodotus, but shouldn't these pages be at Literature/The Diary of Samuel Pepys and Literature/The Histories rather?
- #10: There are cases where I’m unsure whether to use the English or the original title. Is there are hard rule that determines whether Der Ring Des Nibelungen goes to Theatre/Der Ring des Nibelungen or Theatre/The Ring of the Nibelung? Even Wikipedia uses the original title.
I'd be grateful for input.

This has come up before, but there's no consensus to get rid of the LightNovel/ namespace.
An upside I can see to the light novel namespace is that if light novel works were lumped with anime and manga in example sections (which I can see the case for), it would make that a lot easier.

Should Song In The Sky be under Web Animation? It's a YouTube short film, but is meant as a pilot with the hopes of being a full series.

Because I don't want to move it to WebAnimation/ only to move it back if it becomes a full series on TV or streaming.

^^ If it had actually gone to series and that series was broadcast instead of released online, I could see possibly Western Animation.
But it's animation released online. Web Animation!
(I've been collecting other stuff in Sandbox.Web Video that needs a Web Animation namespace move, if anyone feels inclined...)

So this isn't a Series/ as we define it, but I don't know what namespace it actually belongs in: Series.The Phobos Saga. It has 3 associated pages that are also in Series/ but are actually Web Video.
Covered in Star Wars Cleanup, Deadpool, and Web Video sand. I'm not coarse and rough, but I get everywhere.
If it's a series of only Web Video works, then the parent page should be Web Video, too.

I have a question. Why is Merlin a work page?
The way it's written, it really seems like it should be part of a character page, or a subsection of one. Merlin generally does not appear on his own. Neither does The Lady of the Lake, for that matter.

In point of fact, it should be Fanfic.Whose Woods These Are I Think I Know, since the fanfic isn't even titled "Namespace". 
And... it is also there, so I guess to the cutlist with it.

I've tried finding any myth where the Lady is the focus character, but she's always just a supporting cast member. Hell, Lancelot has stories where he's the star. Why doesn't he get a page of his own?

Is Bollywood/ namespace still in use? Or do we prefer Film/?
It seems to me like we're trying to standardize it, like Disney/ was changed to Western Animation/ and Discworld/ to Literature/.
I've seen used Film/ for some Bollywood movies on the wiki.

Well, Complete Monster lists Manhua and Manhwa in the Anime & Manga subpages, because they're comparable, I guess? Maybe put them in the ComicBook/ namespace.

We should either have all Bollywood movies in the Bollywood/ namespace or merge it with Film/. I'm opposed to shoehorning the other namespaces mentioned into their Western equivalent. I especially don't want Anime and Manga folders and subpages merged with (Western) Animation and Comic Books, since it would make them really long and the same tropes frequently apply to both a manga/light novel and its anime adaptation.

I think we should use the Bollywood namespace rather than film, given that Bollywood produces more films and sell more tickets annually than Hollywood— not exactly a niche industry! Any guesses at how many of them are currently in Film/ instead?

While that's true, it's also just a genre of Film, not an entirely different medium. It'd be like splitting Horror/, IMO.

And there isn't much geekdom over Bollywood in the West as Anime & Manga. There are only two Bollywood-specific tropes on this website (Wet Sari Scene and Dancing on a Bus). I've never watched Bollywood movies before, but one thing I want to do once I'm reinstated is create a Bollywood Tropes index if I can find more.
(We also have The Item Number, Sad Bollywood Wedding...)
Bollywood is not exactly a genre, though. It is an entire cultural film industry. It is much more comparable to Anime/Western Animation than it is to Horror/Film.

Right. Bollywood is still Film. The Anime / Western Animation split is cultural, not because they're actually different media.
The only reason we'd need a Bollywood namespace is if there are likely to be substantial title collisions between western and Indian films. I find that unlikely. Of course, we now use disambiguation anyway for title collisions, so that's even less of a reason to use a separate namespace.

Honestly, I question the necessity of having a light novel namespace to begin with — if their singular defining trait is "Japanese kanji complexity", why is that different enough from literature to be a different medium?
