YMMV / SHINee

Go To

  • Actor Shipping: Minho co-starred with f(x)'s Sulli in To the Beautiful You which has caused a lot of fans to start shipping them in real life.
  • Award Snub: Jonghyun's posthumous album lost out to Momoland for first place on Show Champion despite leading in votes.
  • Contractual Purity: Because of their Idol Singer status, the members of SHINee cannot openly discuss who they are dating. Now that their first contract is over and the majority of their fanbase has gotten older, the public outcry over any of the members dating isn't as big as it used to be (for example, Onew has admitted in 2016 that he had dated someone for two years and it wasn't taken as a big deal). However, some fans are very defensive about Taemin dating, especially since he was Not Allowed to Grow Up for a long time until 2014 under the fans' eyes.
  • Fandom Rivalry: Had a kerfluffle with BBC's Sherlock of all fandoms when the group's album, also called Sherlock, came out. All due to confusion over the usage of tags on Tumblr. Yes.
  • Fan Nickname: Onew has Ontokki, Old Man (courtesy of Key), and Dubu; Jonghyun has Jjong, Jjong-tizen and (again via Key) Jamong and Jonghyungie; Key has Ke$ha and Keymera; Minho has Minjo and Mango; and Taemin has Taem, Dancing Machine Taemin, and Taeminnie.
  • Follow the Leader: SHINee is known as a contemporary band who set trends when it comes to new genres, fashion and concepts.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: SHINee is universally adored in many parts of the world, and there is generally an almost equal distribution on which member has the most fans, but Taemin, in particular, is extremely beloved in Japan. Most Japanese models like Rina Aizawa and Alissa Yagi (who was Key's wife on We Got Married Global) are huge fans, and he was popular enough to launch a solo career there as well, releasing original Japanese songs there in addition to his work in South Korea. His first concert in Japan was at the Budokan, one of Japan's biggest venues, and he made his acting debut there as well.
  • He Really Can Act:
    • Minho has been the butt of many jokes within the fandom about how terrible his acting was in To the Beautiful You back in 2012. Well, flash forward three years and he straight-up astonished fans with his performance in the web drama "Because its the First Time" where he plays a character who is struggling with his feelings for his best friend. The scene where he breaks down in tears after realizing that he is in love with her, even after convincing himself that he isn't, is particularly impressive. Unfortunately, the general public still sees him as a sub par actor.
    • Onew had only ever acted in sitcoms, so fans didn't really know what to expect when he was announced to play a doctor in melodrama Descendants of the Sun. However, his acting after losing his patient in a war zone and his performance as a guilt ridden doctor in the subsequent episodes really made an impression on both the fandom and the public.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: On an episode of Hello Baby, Jonghyun admitted he had a crush on actress Shin Sekyung. They began dating some time later. It also counts as Harsher in Hindsight, as their relationship was mostly known for causing a huge uproar among their fanbases and they broke up after nine months of dating.
  • Ho Yay:
    • In spades with all the members, but Jonghyun and Key deserve special note, to the extent that Key usually refers to Jonghyun as "honey". There's an entire backlog of eyebrow-raising moments between them, including playing the Pocky game, wearing couple rings, matching clothes, 4 marriage illusions and saying they would date each other if they were a girl.
Key: What do we call this relationship?
Jonghyun: I wonder what should it be called...
    • Minho and Taemin definitely have a very brotherly relationship and are often seen hugging, messing around together, and stuck playing video games.
    • Particularly in 2015, Jonghyun and Onew have been so into each other that they were seen hugging and messing around in the middle of a photo shoot for Vogue Japan. Jonghyun also went out of his way to say that he would date Onew if he was a girl out of all the members.
    • Outside of just the other members, Key has plenty of friends, including (as of SM's merging with Woollim) labelmate, Woohyun. Once when Woohyun was accused of texting his girlfriend while brushing his teeth he replied, "it's not my girlfriend, it's Key!"
    • Dispatch tried to catch Taemin on a date but instead he was hanging out with fellow labelmate and best friend Kai of EXO, who collaborated with him on his solo mini album.
    • Jonghyun and Taemin's cover of Seo Taiji's "Internet War" during their early concerts is infamous for the subtext between Jonghyun and Taemin, who get up in each other's faces and grab each other's hair, all while grinding against each other. Taemin lets his hand linger on a shirtless Jonghyun, and Jonghyun handcuffs themselves to each other at the end.
  • Narm: "The SHINee World (Doo-Bop)" attempts to be a Boastful Rap, judging by the Korean lyrics. Any attempts to take the song seriously, however, are lost by the line "we got the flow it's break your naughty", and it all just goes downhill from there.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Usually Taemin bears the brunt of this, possibly because he's the youngest, or maybe because he's very, very pretty...
    • There's also Key, who's really fond of girl group dances.
    • Minho is definitely not exempt: a Japanese tabloid once mistook him for Changmin's date.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?:
    • Key's and Minho's pants look a little...weird and out of place during their 2011 K-Pop Music Fest part in Australia.
    • Taemin's pencil leggings in "Dream Girl"
    • The entire 90s styling for their "View" promotions, with jeans tucked into socks, oversized belts and Onew's grandpa pants.
