YMMV / Bombergirl

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: While the game in Japan would at least get a cult following, a lot of western Bomberman fans hate this game, due to its fanservice-oriented style being seen as an insult to the franchise's legacy (not unlike Bomberman Act:Zero with its Darker and Edgier artstyle, which came out 13 years earlier), as well as being strongly associated with Konami's toxic reputation post-2015, with Bombergirl being compared to what happened with fellow Konami franchise Castlevania went through with the Castlevania: Erotic Violence pachinko machine.
  • Audience-Alienating Premise: When word of the game's announcement went through in Western territories, a lot of people didn't like seeing Bomberman, a series known for typically having a cartoony children's anime artstyle (and even received children-focused anime adaptations), featuring less-cartoony anime girls with a bishoujo artstyle instead with a heavy emphasis on fanservice, with many of them accusing Konami of pandering towards the otaku crowd, similarly to what Otomedius has been accused of by some Gradius fans. Despite word of mouth from some players who have tried the game and enjoyed it, most Bomberman fans hate this game's very existence due to its fanservicey nature.note  The fact that Values Dissonance plays a heavy role in the game's reception as well as Shoji Mizuno'snote  death the same year this game was released only added salt in the wound. The game ended up a cult following in Japan at best and never received an official release in the West.
  • Awesome Music: The game has a nice selection of catchy and upbeat music that fits with the style of the game. Some stand out tracks includes the main menu theme, the VS. screen theme, the Cyberspace map theme, the Bomb Town map theme, the Panic Island map theme, and the Aquablue Castle map theme. The developers also added a few select music tracks from Konami's other video game series, ranging from fan-favorites such as Castlevania, TwinBee, and Gradius, to old-school classics such as Lethal Enforcers 1, Getsu Fuma Den, Violent Storm, and even some music tracks the classic Bomberman games.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: For those who aren't put off by the game's fanservice-laden premise, the game has become popular mainly due to the cast of girls and its ecchi-oriented elements more so than the game itself, which isn't helped by the fact that it is only available in Japanese arcades and PC.note  The amount of fanart of the girls has received (including some fanart that falls under the Rule 34 variety) has been more discussed more than game as well.
  • Cult Classic: Despite the game's raunchy premise and limited availability outside of Japan, some Japanese players enjoy the game's unique MOBA-style take on the classic Bomberman formula, colorful cast of characters, and catchy music. There is also a niche community of Western players who also are enjoying the game on PC and are willing to help out potential fans interested in playing Bombergirl, especially after the game became free-to-play as of September 2022. It helps that several of the aforementioned colorful characters are expies of characters from prior Bomberman games (including MAX and Sirius), some of whom had only one prior appearance, making the game feel like a Continuity Cavalcade.
  • Fan Nickname: Bomberman x Dead or Alive, Bomberman Act:Porno, and Bomberman: Erotic Violence among certain parts of the fandom.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Players on the receiving end of Chigusa's sword skills not only inflicts damage, but unlike Asagi who has Life Drain properties, Chigusa inflicts a curse on her opponents with a cursed doll that causes damage over time and replaces whatever background music that is playing with unsettling otherworldly ambience that does not go away unless the player either retreats to their base or is defeated in battle.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Initially posited as Konami's second major Bomberman game following their absorption of Hudson Soft, Bombergirl is primarily known in the west for the angry backlash that ensued over its heavily ecchi-oriented direction in both its content and its marketing, which jarred with the franchise's previous family-friendly and cartoony image (not helped by the resentment towards Konami's erotic Castlevania pachinko machines still fresh in the minds of many in the gaming space at the time). While the hot water eventually cooled significantly, it's still difficult to discuss Bombergirl's actual gameplay in the west without circling back to the heavy (and heavily contested) use of erotic imagery.
  • Porting Disaster: The game's beta PC version was serviceable when it was up and efforts to port the game properly to PC can be seen; however, the game's servers had problems where players could not connect at all, and due to the port being a pay-per-play game, some players reported encountering the game not giving them tickets need to play the game at all working despite paying for them, effectively and unintentionally getting ripped-off by the game. The game's beta was pulled sooner than intended as a result. The PC version also had barebones controller support, as nearly all of the menus required a mouse and certain functions like the Detonate button — which is a crucial button in the game as it is used to destroy the opponent's bases after completely weakening them — couldn't be used on a controller without a keyboard-to-controller program such as JoyToKey or AntiMicro, rendering controller support almost pointless. Even after coming out of beta, it was been reported that the finished version on PC doesn't get nearly as much updates as the arcade version, ruining the convenience of playing it at the comfort of one's home and forces players to travel to a nearby arcade if they want to keep up with other players.

This has changed, however, after the final PC version was quietly released and has continued to receive support, eventually receiving updates and the additional characters previously introduced in the arcade version, while the game's controller support has been improved by implementing simulated mouse controls with the Left Stick and the Bomb button functioning as the Left Mouse Click, shortcuts to the chat voices and skill sets were mapped on the respective Left and Right Triggers while the Right Stick navigates these sub-menus, and previously keyboard-only commands like the Detonate key now have been assigned to their own dedicated buttons (although there are certain minor functions that require a mouse). The game also eventually moved away from the pay-per-play model and became free-to-play as of September 2022, allowing players from overseas without access to Japanese currency the ability to play the game.
  • Theiss Titillation Theory: Olive's default outfit (somewhat NSFW) not only shows off copious amounts of skin, but her tank top is a couple of boob jiggles away from a wardrobe malfunction.note
  • Values Dissonance: And how. This trope is the reason why this game got so much backlash. The very concept of the game threw a lot of western gamers off due to fanservice games being very rare in the west. This isn't helped by the ages of some of the girls being rather young. Combined with it being (initially) arcade-exclusive, this is likely the reason this game won't get an international release.
