Yamask's Revenge is a short Pokémon comic by Eyeburst.

A pair of archaeologists in Unova are exploring some ancient ruins, and they come across a valuable golden vase. One of the archaeologists kills the other so he can get all the money and fame for their discovery. Unbeknownst to him, she returns to life as a Yamask. Eventually, she evolves into a Cofagrigus and gets revenge on her murderer.

It can be read here.

Tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: The male archeologist is killed by the Cofagrigus that used to be his partner. Given that he's directly responsible for her death, he had it coming.
  • Best Served Cold: After the murdered archaeologist becomes a Yamask, she levels up enough to evolve herself into a Cofagrigus and kill her former partner in revenge.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Downplayed; when Yamask is being menaced by a pair of Mandibuzz, a Trainer appears and captures her, saving her from them.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: The male archaeologist is so polite and friendly to the museum curator and a young Trainer that no one would ever suspect him of being a killer.
  • Came Back Wrong: A murdered archaeologist becomes a Yamask after being pushed to her death by her colleague. She can't speak or tell anyone what happened to her, even when her murderer is right in front of her.
  • Circling Vultures: After the female archaeologist is pushed to her death, two Mandibuzz are seen circling her corpse.
  • Dead Hat Shot: After Cofagrigus eats the male archaeologist, the last panel of the comic is a shot of his pith helmet, bag, and Poké Ball on the ground.
  • Death by Materialism: The murderous archaeologist receives a Karmic Death when he follows a trail of gold nuggets into a trap set by Cofagrigus.
  • Didn't See That Coming: After bringing the vase to the museum, the male archaeologist (apparently) thinks he has successfully gotten away with murdering his colleague. He has no idea that she returns to life as a Yamask, levels up enough to evolve into a Cofagrigus, and waits in a tomb to devour him.
  • Disney Villain Death: While two archaeologists are exploring some ruins, the male archaeologist pushes his colleague to her death from a high ledge so he can get all the fame and money for their discovery.
  • Failed a Spot Check: When Yamask's new Trainer releases her from her Poké Ball in front of the male archaeologist, he doesn't notice that the mask that Yamask is holding has the same fringe of purple hair as his murder victim.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Yamask goes from a helpless little Pokémon who can't fight a Mandibuzz to a terrifying Cofagrigus who lays a trap for her murderer and kills him without hesitation.
  • Glory Hound: Upon hearing her talk about the accolades she could get for her discovery, the male archeologist kills the female one so he can take all the credit for himself.
  • Karmic Death: The male archaeologist ends up getting eaten by the Cofagrigus that evolved from his murder victim.
  • Morphic Resonance: The female archaeologist has purple hair, and the golden mask she carries as a Yamask (and eventually a Cofagrigus) has a fringe of the same purple hair around it.
  • Nameless Narrative: None of the characters have names, though the Trainer looks a bit like Rosa.
  • Obliviously Evil: Downplayed, as the act she does is not evil in itself, but the Trainer who captures the Yamask does not appear to be aware that she used to be a human and simply treats her as one would treat any other Pokemon.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • The female archaeologist, when her colleague takes the vase from her and pushes her off a high ledge to her death.
    • The male archaeologist, when he realizes Cofagrigus is about to eat him. He doesn't live to tell the tale.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: At the end of the gold nugget trail, the male archaeologist realizes he's well and truly screwed when he sees the menacing red eyes and hungry jaws of Cofagrigus.
  • Schmuck Bait: After the Time Skip, the male archaeologist is seen exploring a different set of ruins. When he sees a trail of gold nuggets leading into the tomb, he follows it, only to find out it was a trap set by Cofagrigus...and she's hungry.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Yamask runs away when her new Trainer lets her out of her Poké Ball and the first thing she sees is the man who killed her.
  • Silence Is Golden: The comic has no dialogue.
  • Trauma Button: When Yamask sees her murderer, she lets out an anguished wail so powerful it blows back everyone in the vicinity before fleeing the scene.
  • Trauma Conga Line: The female archaeologist is murdered by her colleague, comes back to life as a Yamask, is chased by hungry Mandibuzz, gets captured by a Trainer, and comes face-to-face with her killer without being able to tell anyone what happened to her.
  • Vile Vulture: Moments after waking up as a Yamask, the female archaeologist is attacked by a pair of Mandibuzz.
  • Was Once a Man: After being killed by her colleague, the female archaeologist returns to life as a Yamask.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The Trainer who caught the Yamask is never seen again after Yamask flees from her battle with the male archeologist. Presumably, she simply never found Yamask again after she fled.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: The female archeologist, as a Cofagrigus, kills her former partner as revenge for killing her.
