Black Critic Guy
(real name Tony Whatley II) is an internet critic known primarily for his video reviews of anime and cartoons. He posts full reviews of anime series as well as top tens and general opinions of news in the media.
Has a patreon and a MyAnimeList page where you can find all the anime he's watched so far.
Black Critic Guy's videos provide examples of:
- Accentuate the Negative: Averted, his reviews are well balanced. Even if it's a show he hates, he'll give it credit for its good points.
- All Men Are Perverts: Thoroughly dislikes this stereotype and makes sure to call it out in his reviews. He doesn't tend to find anime guys who constantly perv on girls to be funny at all, more disturbing and predatory.
- Alternative Character Interpretation: Tends not to appreciate "comedic" voyeurs and molesters, instead seeing them as predatory and disturbed. Several (e.g. the three pervs from Green Green) hold places on his "Worst Characters" lists for this reason.
- Author Appeal:
- Tony is a big fan of romance and romantic comedies.
- He likes well done fanservice.
- Characters that manage to avoid the usual anime cliches and stand out as unique.
- Awesome Art: A large amount of any of his Studio Ghibli reviews will be Tony happily gushing about how beautiful they are.
- Awesome Music: Disney soundtracks. He's made a few videos talking about his favorites.
- Berserk Button:
- Really hates incest anime. Sibling incest (whether biological or through marriage) in particular squicks him out beyond belief.
- Abuse portrayed as love will often get him shouting in his reviews.
- Black and Nerdy: Yep.
- Broke the Rating Scale: Back when he gave ratings, he'd have a 5 point rating for most anime...then on rare occasions (outside of the month of August), he'd give really bad anime a 0 out of 5. For the most part, this trope has been outright averted since he stopped using a star rating system.
- Caustic Critic: Any video labelled "Rant" will usually have him acting like this.
- Damned by Faint Praise: In his review of The Castle of Cagliostro (which is mostly positive) he says the characters are "not godawful".
- Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Hates this trope. If a female character forces herself on a male, he will call her out for it.
- Driven to Suicide: Some of the worst anime he's ever reviewed had him fake sobbing and pointing a (toy) gun at his head.
- Dude, Not Funny!: Rape, molestation, stalking, etc. when Played for Laughs. Tony is not a fan.
- Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Black? Check. Critic? Check. Guy? Check.
- Fan Disservice: The girls from Eiken. Particularly the young girl with gigantic boobs. Poor Tony has to use his bucket several times.
- I Work Alone: Occasionally does crossovers but the majority of his videos feature him alone.
- Not Distracted by the Sexy: Tony enjoys fanservice so long as he feels it's done well. If it's done badly or just used to try to compensate for a weak plot and characters, he's not interested.
- Not That There's Anything Wrong with That: Said almost word for word when he talks about the increasingly gay vibes between Spongebob and Patrick.
- Old Shame: His "Top Ten Worst Male/Female Anime Characters" lists. Two of them in fact. All four are now labeled OBSOLETE on his channel.
- One True Pairing: Made a list of his own.
- The Scrappy: Any character that appears on his Worst lists is this to Tony. Special mention should go to the main characters from Kiss×sis, Makoto and Sekai from School Days and the three pervy guys from Green Green.
- Sir Swears-a-Lot: Sometimes. Depends on how angry the piece of media he's reviewing has made him.
- Squick:
- Incest anime. Also a Berserk Button of his.
- The malformed cast of Eiken had him vomiting several times.
- Suddenly Shouting: If something pisses him of badly enough.
- Tranquil Fury: Reserved for the very worst on his show. When Tony's pissed off at something, he shouts. When he's truly furious, he does this.
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: He considers the main protagonist from Diabolik Lovers to be this, since she never tries to resist or escape from her vampire abusers but instead just lays back and lets the do whatever they please.
- Vocal Dissonance: He criticized the Disney dub of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind for this saying the voices they chose did not fit the characters.
- Vomit Discretion Shot: Whenever something disgusts him enough he pretends to throw up offscreen.
- Who Writes This Crap?!: He loves to go off on the writers of particularly awful anime.
- Writer Revolt: His "Why I Won't Watch/Review [x]" videos. Usually complete with an over the top pout from Tony in the thumbnail.
