California Doubling: Some parts of the film was shot in Prague, though others were shot in Ireland.
Development Hell: The film had been in pre-production since the 1970s as Ridley Scott project, which he had intended as a follow-up to his first feature film The Duellists.
Fake Brit: James Franco (American) does a quite decent English accent as Tristan.
Fake Irish: British actress Sophia Myles as the Irish princess Isolde.
Troubled Production: James Franco recalls doing nine months of training for sword fighting, horse riding and martial arts - only to discover that the script had been changed last minute, and that the epic Braveheart style battles he had been training for were changed to stealthy murders. He also suffered a knee injury on set and was constantly clashing with the director (reportedly Kevin Reynolds chided Franco for trying to do James Dean all the time, and Franco hit back about Reynolds trying to do Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves again all the time). Overall the film took about eight months to shoot.
