Trivia / Shadowhunters

Go To

  • Actor-Inspired Element: Will Tudor auditioned for Sebastian with an American accent. They decided to let him use his natural accent, and made the character from London instead of Paris.
  • Acting for Two: The Chilean dub had some cases of this:
    • Carolina Villanueva dubbed both Maryse Lightwood and Dot, at least in season 1. Camila Rojas replaced Villanueva as Dot in season 2.
    • Cristián Lizama as Jonathan Morgenstern and Sebastian Verlac.
    • María Doris Cuevas as Lydia Branwell and Ollie.
    • Jessica Toledo as Captain Vargas and Aline Penhallow.
    • Judith Noguera as Heidi McKenzie and Nora Kendall.
  • California Doubling: The show is set in New York but is filmed exclusively in Toronto.
  • Cast the Runner-Up: Matthew Daddario initially auditioned for Jace, but Cassandra Clare saw his audition and said he was a better fit for Alec.
  • The Cast Showoff:
    • Harry Shum Jr. was a dancer before he was an actor and in Season 2 Episode 13, Magnus and Dot dance.
    • Alberto Rosende sings in several episodes notably in "Those of Demon Blood".
  • Dawson Casting: For many of the protagonists, though it can be hard to tell for sure. Some have show-canon ages, like Clary, who turns 18 in the first episode (played by then 21-year-old Katherine McNamara) or Simon, who is also 18 (Alberto Rosende was 23 when Season 1 premiered). Alec and Izzy definitely fall under this trope, Alec has been confirmed by the showrunners to be 23, while Matthew Daddario is turning 31 in 2018. Izzy must be younger than 23 and is played by 30-year-old Emeraude Toubia. Magnus Bane is a weird case, since he is immortal and several hundred years old, but, in the books at least, he stopped aging at 19. Harry Shum, Jr. turned 36 in 2018. A part of this is the slow progression of the show's timeline: Between the end of Season 1 in 2016 and Season 3a in early 2018 less than two months passed in-universe, meaning the actors age much faster than their characters.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Due to scheduling conflicts, Eileen Li was unable to reprise the role of Aline Penhallow in the third season after being credited in the second season through a guest capacity. Jacky Lai took over the role.
    • For obvious reasons, Luke Baines replaced Will Tudor as Jonathan Morgenstern in season 3B.
    • The Chilean dub:
      • Cecilia Valenzuela, who voiced Isabelle in the first season. She was replaced by Daniela Veronesi in the second season.
      • Camila Rojas replaced Carolina Villanueva as Dot in the second season.
  • Deleted Role: Lindsay, one of the Shadowhunters, was supposed to appear in the sixth episode of season 2 "Iron Sisters" helping Jace log in to the Institute's database to try and find information about Clary's abilties to create runes of her own. However, her appearance was removed from the final cut.
  • Dueling Works: With The Shannara Chronicles. Both are teen-oriented fantasy shows based on popular book series that premiered within a week of each other in 2016.
  • Dyeing for Your Art:
    • Maxim Roy (a brunette) and Sofia Wells (a blonde) dyed their hair red to portray Jocelyn and Young Clary, respectively.
    • Katherine McNamara dyes her hair red (she's a blonde) for her role as Clary. In the earliest episodes she wears a very unconvincing wig instead.
    • Emeraude Toubia says she had to learn martial arts while wearing high heels.
"You could just imagine how my feet were by the end of the night."
  • Fake American: Jace and Jonathan (post-resurrection in Season 3B) are played by English actors Dominic Sherwood and Luke Baines, while Valentine, Jocelyn, and Hodge are all played by Canadian actors Alan Van Sprang, Maxim Roy and Jon Cor.
  • Fake Brit: Lola Flanery (American) does a pretty convincing English accent as the Seelie Queen. Sarah Hyland does likewise when she plays the Queen.
  • Playing Against Type: Prior to landing the role, Katherine McNamara had played mostly Alpha Bitch roles while occasionally the Love Interest.
  • Reality Subtext: Simon and Maia are from rival Downworld clans. Alberto Rosende and Alisha Wainwright went to rival high schools in Florida.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: In the midst of the series being cancelled after proper filming ended, and Freeform ordering two additional episodes to conclude the story, some of the actors moved on to other projects. This ended up affecting the amount of screentime Luke and Maia had in the two-hour finale, mostly because of their actors Isaiah Mustafa and Alisha Wainwright were busy filming It: Chapter Two and Raising Dion respectively.
  • Role Reprise:
    • Brother Jeremiah is played by the same actor (Stephen R. Hart) who played him in the film of City of Bones.
    • In the Chilean dub:
      • Jessica Toledo as Aline Penhallow in season 3, despite being portrayed by Jacky Lai, the actress who replaced Eileen Li.
      • Cristián Lizama also reprised Jonathan Morgenstern (previously portrayed by Will Tudor) in season 3, now played by Luke Baines.
      • Carolina Highet voiced the Seelie Queen, not only in her child form, but also in her teenage and adult ones, played by Sarah Hyland (season 2) and Kimberly Sue Murray (season 3).
  • Romance on the Set: Alberto Rosende (Simon) and Tessa Mossey (Heidi) started dating in 2018.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting: Emeraude Toubia, Matthew Daddario and Nicola Correia-Damude all look similar enough it's very believable they're relatives.
  • Schedule Slip: During season 3's first run, the first 10 episodes were aired before its mid-season break. While the second handful of episodes was reportedly set to air by August 14, 2018, however, they were pushed back to early 2019 due to the series' abrupt cancellation that came through Netflix withdrawing its partnership with Freeform to air the series globally, thus resulting in the mid-season break being extended for nine months. Even two additional episodes were ordered for the originally-planned 20-episodes-season in order to give a proper ending to the story.
  • Shipper on Deck: While the whole cast seems to ship Malec, nobody ships it harder than Matthew Daddario. Nobody.
  • Throw It In!: Fan art of Isabelle usually depicted her with red lips, despite that never being mentioned in the books. So they gave Emeraude Tobia red lipstick.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Fans campaigned on Twitter for Robert Sheehan to reprise his role as Simon from the film. Alberto Rosende ultimately played him instead.
    • Isabelle's necklace was left out of the series initially but added in after fans insisted its importance.
    • Before the series' cancellation, the third season was originally planned for 20 episodes. Had the series been renewed for a fourth season, the third would've seen the Big Damn Kiss between Simon and Izzy, before the latter was set on fire as a result of the Heavenly Fire embedded in her veins, which would've been an unfair disturbing finale for the fans if not for the two additional episodes, one of them actually including the previously mentioned scene. Thus, the third season's twentieth episode ended with Magnus proposing to Alec before flying back to Edom and seal the rift to prevent more demons from escaping.
    • The planned fourth season would have included a "slower burn" on the Simon/Izzie romance, Luke returning to the institute as an agent, Magnus' rescue in Edom taking longer than expected, Helen and Aline given more time and building up a new dark threat.
  • Underage Casting: Nicola Correia-Damude (born 1981) plays the mother to Matthew Daddario (born 1987) and Emeraude Toubia (born 1989).
  • You Look Familiar: The werewolf Justine is played by Alyssa Veniece - who also played a vampire in the film adaptation.
