Trivia / Money in the Bank

  • Follow the Leader: Given the way Edge won his MITB cash-in match (twice, for the matter), taking advantage of a vulnerable champion who has just finished a match (or otherwise received a beatdown from a different wrestler) became a staple of how the briefcase would get cashed in. Only five people have averted this by stating when and where: Rob Van Dam (on ECW One Night Stand 2006 against John Cena), John Cena (against CM Punk on Raw's 1000th episode), Dean Ambrose (On the Raw before the PPV itself, saying he would cash it in on the same night if he won the briefcase, which he did), Braun Strowman (against Roman Reigns at Hell in a Cell) and Big E (on the September 13, 2021 episode of Raw against the winner of the Bobby Lashley vs. Randy Orton championship match). Mr. Kennedy and Otis are the only wrestlers who have lost their briefcases to another wrestler (Edge and The Miz, respectively.)
  • In Memoriam: The 2019 event is dedicated to Ashley Massaro, who passed away three days prior.
  • Troubled Production: Much like WrestleMania 36 before it, the 2020 edition was held in an empty arena due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. In this case, the eponymous match was held in WWE HQ in Connecticut instead of the Performance Center in Florida, where the other matches on the card were held.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Money in the Bank wasn't even the first concept of the match. It was originally going to be a "wish granted" type of prize, where the winner can get a wish granted by WWE. Originally, Rob Van Dam was to win the inaugural 2005 match and choose to revive ECW, leading to the ECW reunion show One Night Stand, but was vetoed by Vince McMahon, wanting a better prize that seemed more lucrative, and so the guaranteed world title prize was born.
    • Not all of the Money in the Bank winners were the final choice to win the briefcase:
      • 2008: Jeff Hardy was actually meant to win it at WrestleMania 24, but due to his drug violation suspension, he not only dropped the Intercontinental Championship, but was passed up on winning the briefcase for CM Punk, who would go on to become one of WWE's biggest stars.
      • 2019: An infamous example was that either Mustafa Ali and Drew McIntyre were the original winners in mind. At the night of the show, Ali was chosen to win, but at the last second, it was given to Brock Lesnar, who didn't appear in the match until the last minute.
      • 2020: Shayna Baszler was originally slated to win the women's briefcase and eventually pick up her feud again with Becky Lynch, who would've defended her title at the event against Nia Jax. Becky's pregnancy meant this had to be scuttled, and Asuka was chosen as the winner instead, receiving the title the next night in lieu of the contract.
    • Cody Rhodes and Rhea Ripley were supposed to be in the 2022 event but both were injured weeks leading to the event. Rhodes was supposed to be in the Men's MITB match but got his pecs torned. Ripley was originally scheduled to challenge for the Raw Women's Title but wasn't medically cleared and was replaced with Carmella.

Misc. Trivia

  • The 2020 event's namesake match, which took place through WWE's HQ, Titan Tower, was inducted into WrestleCrap.
