Trivia / Kelly Clarkson

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: My December is this. Positively reviewed, very left wing lyrically, extremely personal and literal. Wasn't that successful and her companies disown it to a degree.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Kelly Clarkson has held distaste towards "A Moment Like This" (mainly because it was written for whoever won the first season of American Idol) and "My Life Would Suck Without You" (because her label forced her to work with co-producer Dr. Luke, with whom she'd had a bad working relationship during the sessions for Breakaway).
    • Starring in the terrible film From Justin to Kelly, which was required in the contract she got by winning American Idol.
  • Creator Breakdown: It could be argued that most of her music leans this way, with very few love songs and happy songs in general. My December is the greatest example of this type of thing.
  • The Danza: Other than playing Brenda Lee on American Dreams, Kelly's few non-As Herself acting roles tend to be this - see Reba and From Justin to Kelly. (Actually, in the case of the latter, don't. She'll thank you later.)
  • Development Hell: Her company pushed back Stronger by about six months.
  • Executive Meddling: She was infamously made to perform The Star-Spangled Banner at an event commemorating the first anniversary of 9/11, just a week after she won American Idol. She didn't want to do so as she felt it was a publicity stunt rather than a sincere tribute, but didn't really have a choice in the matter. Kelly has since gone on to regularly perform patriotic songs on her own terms, and has received recognition for it.
  • The Other Darrin: At a few gigs where Vince Gill was unavailable, she had Jason Sellers sing his part on "Don't Rush".
  • Referenced by...: In Twinkling in the Dark, Rie Misumi encourages Kanako Mishou to keep up on their jog by telling her "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stand a little taller".
  • Romance on the Set: Justin Guarini revealed in his 2014 one man show that he and Kelly had a fling during the filming of From Justin to Kelly in 2003.
  • Screwed by the Network: Kelly claims Clive Davis did this to her "My December" album.
  • What Could Have Been: "Breakaway" was originally written in 2002 for Avril Lavigne's album Let Go, hence Avril being credited as one of the song's writers. She passed on releasing it because it didn't fit in with the rest of Let Go, but it was subsequently pitched to other performers and was eventually recorded by Kelly. Avril Lavigne's demo recording of the song eventually leaked online in 2014.
    • "Since U Been Gone" was originally written with P!nk in mind - Hilary Duff also could have performed it, but she passed because the higher notes were above her vocal range.
