Trivia / Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai

Go To

  • Colbert Bump: Dai became more well known in North America when he appeared in Jump Force.
  • Crossdressing Voices: Dai in every dub except for the Italian dub of the 1991 series and the German dub of the 2020 series.
  • He Also Did: Riku Sanjo and Koji Inada are also responsible for Beet the Vandel Buster.
  • Invisible Advertising: Despite the series being one of the best selling mangas of all time with 50 millions copies sold, Crunchyroll, who has the license to the 2020 animated adaptation outside of Japan, did nothing to promote it beside publishing the trailer.
  • Late Export for You: The manga began serialization in Japan in 1989, yet despite the manga being popular in other countries, it wasn't licensed in North America until 2022- 33 years later.
  • Marth Debuted in "Smash Bros.": Before the 2020 anime came over to North America, Dai made his first appearence there in the Shonen Jump crossover game Jump Force.
  • No Export for You: The 1991 anime and its associated movies were never released in North America. Averted with the original manga, which Viz Media has licensed for a 2022 release.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Due to the first series dating back to 1991 and some of its cast having passed awaynote  after the anime ended and before the second series aired in 2020, every role was inevitably re-cast there.
    • The same goes for the Latin American Spanish dub of the 2020 series, as the entire cast was replaced. Curiously enough, Dai's voice actresses in both versions, Marina Huerta in the 1991 version and Claudia Motta in the 2020 version, both voiced Bart Simpson, and both having a very similar voice tone.
  • Playing Against Type:
    • While Tomoaki Maeno is no stranger to voicing huge guys who sound deep, the range he uses for Crocodine is incredibly low and raspy even for his usual standards, using a guttural voice as opposed to a suave baritone.
    • Yukari Tamura, best known for her roles as young, cute girls, gives voice in this anime to Albinass, who is not only a ruthless, cold antagonist, but also sports one of the deepest vocal registers Tamura has displayed in her long career.
    • Rie Takahashi gives voice to queen Flora, who is a mature, serious, deep-voiced adult and a big sister figure towards the main female cast of the series, contrasting her usual roles of gentle or wacky young girls.
  • Real-Life Relative:
    • The voice actors of Maam (Mikako Komatsu) and Crocodine (Tomoaki Maeno) in the 2020 anime are married in real life.
    • In the Latin American Spanish dub of the 1991 series, Dai and Delolin's voice actors, Marina Huerta and Adrian Fogarty, were married at the time, through they are now divorced. Likewise, Crocodine and Flazzard's voice actor, the late Carlos Magaña, was the father of Israel Magaña, who voiced Hyunckel.
  • Recursive Adaptation: Dragon Quest (video game) → Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (manga / anime) → Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai: Infinity Strash (video game)
  • Troubled Production: The English Dub, which was being handled by Ocean Productions, fell into this when a dispute with SAG-AFTRA, the voice cast's union came about, issuing a do not work order and causing production to be held off, not releasing in English until 2022.
  • Role Reprise: In the Latin American Spanish dub of the 2020 series, both José Luis Orozco and Dulce Guerrero reprise their roles as Killvearn and Marin respectively from the 1991 series.
  • What Could Have Been: In interviews, the author revealed there were plans for a sequel picking up after the ending with Dai going after the threat of Velzar in the Dark World, with Crocodine becoming one of Dai's Dragon Riders, among other things. Some of these concepts would end up being utilized later by Riku Sanjo and Koji Indada in both a Manga about Dragon Quest IV and Beet the Vandel Buster.
