Recap / Total Drama: "Top Dog"

Go To

The final four are subjected to an animal buddy movie challenge. Meanwhile, Courtney's controlling behaviour has Duncan second-guessing his relationship choices, and Courtney's lawyers are getting increasingly annoying.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's not exactly clear if Duncan voted for Courtney on purpose, or because he was so tired he pressed the button to vote for her by accident. Either way, he's not sorry to see her go. When we see it happen, it looks as if sleep-deprived Duncan voted for her by accident, but his confessional makes it sound like he intended to vote for her. It therefore paints a picture that he did in fact want to vote for Courtney and managed to successfully do so in spite of his unconscious move when sleep-deprived.
  • An Aesop: When you're in a romantic relationship, you cannot realistically expect your partner to fix every single one of their personality flaws (or what you think are personality flaws) just to please you.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: When Chris is explaining the challenge, he has a parrot sitting on his shoulder. After it bites his finger, he tells the contestants to give him a minute, and then walks off screen. Violent sounds of punching and squawking are heard, then Chris comes back with his hair messed up and covered in feathers.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After fighting with the shark, Courtney presents a plate of sashimi to Chris and Chef, which they eat. She didn't kill and cook the shark; she injured it enough to get it to vomit up his lunch. ("From his stomach to yours!")
  • Bait-and-Switch Comparison: For the animal buddy movie challenge, the contestants have to select an animal to train to reflect their personality. Courtney immediately calls dibs on the shark. This prompts Beth to enter the confessional and acknowledge that the two are a good match, because "the only difference is that one would eat you alive in a heartbeat, and the other's a shark!"
  • Bears Are Bad News: Zig-zagged with the bear that Owen is partnered with. They work well together, but the bear will also protect him from an angry Courtney, which gets her to back off.
  • Book Dumb: Duncan thinks that Scruffy, his dead tarantula, was a reptile. When Owen tries to tell him that Scruffy was a bug, Duncan just yells at him, "Nobody talks about Scruffy like that!"
  • Brick Joke: Thanks to Duncan being kept up all night, he jokes that maybe he'll get lucky and the day's genre will be "guy-in-a-coma movie". Later on, Chris says that the day's options were either animal buddy or guy-in-a-coma movie.
  • Call-Back: Owen grows a large beard similar to the one he had in Camp Castaways.
  • Civilized Animal: Beth's raccoon brings her to a cave for several raccoons that has a ping-pong table, music, a fireplace, TVs, and gourmet food! They rest there before setting off to the studio again, and still make it back long before any of the others.
  • Control Freak: Courtney is revealed to be this early on in the episode, having argued with Duncan all night and forcing him to read and sign a 32-page contract on how to be a good boyfriend to her.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Despite stopping to rest, Beth and her raccoon escape from the woods days before everyone else.
  • Dark Horse Victory: The others do reasonably well with their animals (at least until Courtney ticks off the shark), but Beth does such a bad job with her raccoon that she ends up being trained by it instead of the other way. However, she ultimately wins both challenges and immunity because of the little guy, whereas everyone else suffers.
  • Didn't Think This Through: After getting trapped in the net, Owen suggests he and the bear eat some nearby berries in an effort to increase their combined weight and break the branch. It works, but then Owen expresses concern about what eating a lot of unknown berries can do to a person.
Owen: I learned a lot today. One, never eat wild berries without knowing if they're poisonous. Two, explosive diarrhea is not a recommended outdoor activity. And three, you're gonna wanna stay out of those woods for a while. [farts] A long while.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After being subjected to more of Courtney's emotional and physical abuse, Duncan's had enough and votes her off.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Duncan considers Courtney's 32-page long statement outlining all of his flaws "psychotic".
Duncan: Court's popularity is in the toilet. I can't have her dragging me down. But the real reason? A 32-page letter! And people call me psycho!
  • Gilligan Cut: After telling Courtney that she and Duncan DIDN'T keep her up all night, Beth says that she heard everything, even remembering what sections she listened to before she fell asleep.
  • Humiliation Conga: Courtney struggles against a shark, loses her PDA for most of the episode, gets lost in the wild, and gets voted off by her own boyfriend.
  • I Can Change My Beloved: Courtney tries to change Duncan. In the form of a 32-paged "letter" detailing 316 "minor transgressions" Duncan is supposedly guilty of. It doesn't work.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Chris admits they only opted for the animal buddy genre because they already used up more notable genres this season and struggled to come up with more ideas.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Owen got Harold eliminated to keep his secret. Owen's mole status is exposed because Harold contacted Courtney's lawyers so that she would find out through her PDA and tell the others, which gets Owen fired by Chris and sent packing. Even Owen knew he was going to get found out eventually.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: Beth is deeply offended by Owen's betrayal, but she votes Courtney off instead for being the bigger threat.
  • Madness-Induced Omnivore: Duncan eats Courtney's 32-page-long contract after he gets lost in the woods and goes insane. Unfortunately for Duncan, this didn't get rid of the contract for good since Courtney made copies.
  • Never My Fault: Courtney is furious and indignant when Duncan votes her off. She never stops to think that maybe she was being too controlling (to the point of writing a 32-page behavioral contract to control his behavior at all times) and it was driving him crazy.
  • Non-Gameplay Elimination: Owen doesn't get voted off, but Chris eliminates him from the competition because everyone else has already found out he was the producers' mole.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The episode begins with Owen waking up in the boys' trailer and being alarmed when he doesn't get a pillow whipped at his head or an angry threat to stick a cork in it, realizing Duncan isn't there. Shortly afterward, the delinquent walks in, extremely tired. Turns out he was in Courtney's trailer all night going over the "perfect boyfriend contract" she made outlining all his flaws.
  • Sanity Slippage: Duncan after getting lost in the woods and falling in a pit.
  • Shaking the Rump: Courtney tries to bond with her shark buddy by performing a cheer with it. The cheer includes a moment in which she turns around and bounces her butt. It doesn't have the intended effect of getting the shark to cheer along, but it does catch Duncan's attention.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The very long statement that Courtney makes Duncan read and sign brings to mind Ross and Rachel's relationship.
    • Courtney's cheer is a parody of the song "U.G.L.Y." by Daphne and Celeste, with lyrics containing spelling and saying, "You ain't got no alibi".
    • After losing her way in the woods, a panicking Beth recreates the famed apology scene from The Blair Witch Project.
    • Courtney briefly refers to Lord of the Flies after Duncan comes wildly swinging into the set from the forest.
  • Silent Snarker: Beth's raccoon has a number of these moments towards her, such as when helping her recover her retainer.
  • Sudden Anatomy: Duncan suddenly gets pupils in his irises after going crazy from being left alone in the woods. They go away when Courtney kisses him and brings him back to his senses.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Near the end of the episode, Mr. Whiskers finds Courtney's missing PDA for her. She snatches it from him and snaps, "Beth, how did your rat get its filthy paws on my PDA?"
  • Wham Episode: Courtney is eliminated, and Owen is fired.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Beth and Courtney towards Owen for being a mole working for Chris.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Chris kicks Owen out of the competition after he's been outed as the producers' mole.
Chris: What's the point of having a spy who's been spied?
