Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S1E21 Green With Evil Part 5: Breaking The Spell

Go To

The team reel at the revelation of the Green Ranger's secret identity. Alpha confirms that there's no mistake here, and suggests that Rita casts a spell over Tommy's mind. Jason reaffirms their mission statement to break the spell and save him. The villains toast to a great victory and enjoy party food, praising Rita's master plan. She asks if they're ready for a further fight and they confirm they are. Alpha frets, convinced Rita will rule the world and enslave mankind. Zack calms him down and the Rangers agree to keep fighting. They split up to find and question Tommy, while Alpha continues work to find and restore Zordon. At the Youth Center, Ernie, Bulk and Skull are watching a news report of Goldar's rampage. Kim drops by to ask Ernie about Tommy. Bulk and Skull tell them they should be thanking them for helping the Power Rangers to scare off Goldar, to which the pair roll their eyes. The class clowns dream of being on TV, but Kim tells them to dream on. Ernie points out Tommy to her who's doing strength training. She goes over and confirms she knows he's the Green Ranger. He tells her she should also know she and her friends will be wiped out, revealing that he knows their identities too. She pleads him to let them save him, but he asserts Rita as his empress and that she will soon rule the world. He yanks his arm out of Kim's grip, his eyes flash green and he tells her they have been warned, then walks off.

Squatt and Baboo wonder if Rita can really call a new Zord back from dormancy, but Goldar retorts that it shall be done. She blasts the earth with energizing bolts, and off the coast of Angel Grove the sea begins to froth and bubble. Suddenly, a massive, Kaiju-esque Zord starts to emerge. A finned, reptilian mechanical head breaks the water's surface. Its mighty tail swings around, revealing a large drill at the end. It smashes up sections of the port and the awesome Dragonzord rears up to full height. Bipedal, heavily armored and just barely shorter than the Megazord, it roars monstrously and lumbers into the city. Rita boasts that this beast will crush the Power Rangers. The drill point spins and devastates buildings, and the Dragonzord picks up a smokestack, chomping down as if it were a candy cane. A morphed Tommy leaps onto its head with a new weapon, the Dragon Dagger. Alpha tries once more to reach Zordon, and the search function performs a sweep. At Billy's lab, Kim tells the male Rangers about her encounter with Tommy and his glowing green eyes. They're alarmed that he knows their identities and that he's after them. Everything about this plot starts to make sense to them. Trini bursts over, warning the others about the Dragonzord's rampage. They morph and confront their adversary. Tommy leaps from it's head to higher ground, and commands the mecha to attack the Rangers using a tune on his Dragon Dagger which doubles as a flute. It shoots the Rangers with missiles which fly from it's fingertips.

The team fly off the building falling to ground level. Jason repeatedly entreats Tommy to stop, but he refuses, attacking them with the drill tail. However, Rita is increasingly impatient and questions why Tommy doesn't just finish the team instead of toying with them. Alpha FINALLY restores Zordon, who tells the robot to call upon the other Zords and have the Rangers destroy the Sword of Darkness to free Tommy's mind from the spell. Their Power Morphers glow their respective colors, telling them that Zordon is back for good. Involuntarily, they teleport into a fissure of the Earth, back into their now fully-operational Dino Zords which triumphantly rise out of the lava once more. Rita groans in disappointment... and the Dragonzord, now piloted by Tommy, rushes into the countryside to engage the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord in combat. The two are evenly matched to start, and the Tyrannosaurus blocks a blow by the drill tail, holding it's opponent still. But the drill spins up, forcing itself out of Jason's grip and the Dragonzord shoots more missile at him. Jason remonstrates yet again, but is knocked to the ground. The Tyrannosaur then surprises the Dragonzord by leaping into the air on it's dino tail, coming in for an effective dropkick attack which knocks the villain to the ground. The Megazord reforms, lumbering over to the writhing Dragonzord, and picks the mighty beast up in a deadlift press, spins it around and throws it into some nearby mountains. Brandishing the Mega Power Sword, it slices the Dragonzord up several times before powering up, yanking it's by it's tail, spinning it around and throwing it through the mountains. Jason tells Tommy to give it up and apologizes because he has to destroy the Sword of Darkness. The two rivals leap out of their Zords and prepare to engage in one desperate, final battle.

Tommy attacks Jason and his Power Sword with both the Sword of Darkness and the Dragon Dagger, generating energy blasts. It's another close fight, and both get several hits in. Jason draws his Blade Blaster as Tommy plays the ditty on his Dragon Dagger, slowly advancing on Jason. Bewildered, Jason blasts Tommy only to have his bolts reflected straight back at him from the Dragon Shield. Tommy announces that the time to finish Jason has arrived and he blasts him with an energy wave through the ground using his sword. Rita grows hopeful again. Jason overcharges the Power Sword and lobs it at Tommy, blasting both blades out of his hands as he's knocked down. Jason apologizes and proceeds to blast the Sword of Darkness into smithereens as Tommy crawls towards it. Tommy unmorphs, and so do the other five. A stunned and guilty Tommy is told that the spell is broken and he's free from Rita's bewitchment. Jason comforts him, saying it was all Rita's doing, and that he owns the Power now. They ask Tommy to join them as the Sixth Ranger and he agrees with a firm handshake. Zordon announces that the Prophecy has been fulfilled with history in the making. They all remorph with Tommy taking his place in the righteous sequence. They all announce a courageous vow to oppose Rita and her evil forever. Tommy summons the Dragonzord back to it's feet, as Zordon explains that it can combine with the Mastadon, Sabretooth Tiger and Triceratops Zords to form Dragonzord in Fighting Mode. They do just that; much like the Megazord, the three auxiliary Zords form humanoid arms and legs around the Dragonzord's core and the Dragonzord's golden wings form a chestplate shield similar to that of the Green Ranger. The Dragonzord's primary chest shield core joins with the drill tail to form a powerful drill spear for the warrior mecha. The team are impressed with this new fighting combination and it's potential for battling monsters.

A furious Rita is appalled at having victory snatched by the jaws of defeat. Goldar vows revenge against the forces of good. Back at the Command Center, the team welcome Zordon's return. He praises the five for persevering against overwhelming odds like true super heroes and Alpha too for displaying exemplary leadership skills in his absence and giving him great pride, causing the robot to be overcome by humility. Zordon then officially welcomes Tommy as the Sixth Ranger, restating the Power Ranger rules and takes an oath of fealty from him. Billy gives Tommy a green wrist communicator, and Jason congratulates him joining the team. Zordon announces that a new chapter has begun for them, and blesses them that the Power may protect them. The Mighty Six place each of their hands in a pile, leap up in the air and yell "POWER RANGERS!"

Tropes

  • Behemoth Battle: Tyrannosaurus Dinozord then Dino Megazord vs. the Dragonzord.
  • Big "NO!": Rita screams this when the Rangers beat the villains once again, and Tommy joining the Rangers.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: While the Dragonzord and the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord are fairly evenly matched, the Megazord wrecks the former, slashing the Dragonzord repeatedly with its Power Sword before casually tossing him head first through a nearby mountain. But even this won't stop Tommy.
    Jason: Give it up, Tommy!
    Tommy: No way!
  • Death Glare: Tommy hits Kimberly with a pretty effective one during the Internal Reveal.
Tommy: (punctuated with glowing green eyes) "You... have been warned."
  • Deus ex Machina: After being destroyed the previous episode, the Zords inexplicably come back the moment Zordon calls for them. Not only that, but the end of the episode reveals Tommy's brainwashing and subsequent defeat was a prophecy.
    • To be fair, the Zords weren't actually destroyed, just damaged and locked into their lava pocket until Zordon's return was able to reinvigorate them.
    • It's also possible Zordon simply knew some sort of ancient Zord resurrection technique that Alpha was unaware of.
  • Foreshadowing: While nothing amounts to it during this episode, Bulk and Skull's musings on being on TV would play a part in a future episode this season and during next season.
  • Excalibur in the Rust: When Rita plans to give the Dragonzord to her evil Green Ranger, Squatt has doubts that the Dragonzord still works because it hasn't been used in 10,000 years. Sure enough, it struggles against just the Tyrannosaurus Zord and the Megazord handily curbstomps it.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Tommy joins the Power Rangers after being freed from Rita's spell.
  • Instrument of Murder: The Dragon Dagger. Plays quite a catchy tune to control the deadly Dragonzord.
  • Internal Reveal:
Kimberly: "I know you're the Green Ranger."
Tommy: (stops working out) "Well then, Pink Ranger..."
    [Kimberly reacts in shock.]
  • Mid-Season Upgrade / Super Mode / All Your Powers Combined: Once Tommy is free from Rita's spell and has joined the Rangers' side, Zordon reveals the new alternate Megazord they can now form: The Dragonzord in Fighting Mode, a combination of the Dragonzord and the Mastodon, Triceratops, and Sabertooth Tiger Dinozords.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Tommy's reaction upon being free from Rita's spell. The Rangers assured him that whatever bad things he's done was because of Rita.
  • No-Sell: During their final fight, Jason shoots at Tommy with his Blade Blaster, but the latter activates his Dragonshield, which blocks the beams and shoots them right back at Jason.
  • Shockwave Stomp: Tommy stabs the Sword of Darkness into the ground, sending a shockwave through the dirt that blasts Jason.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Dragonzord to Godzilla, including most notably with an identical roar.
    • His roars are actually recycled stock audio roars that were created by Frank Welker and have been used for countless movie monsters and dinosaurs through the years, such as Sharptooth from the Land Before Time movies.
  • So Proud of You: Zordon to Alpha for displaying exemplary leadership skills.
  • Team Hand-Stack/"YEAH!" Shot: Like "Day of the Dumpster", the team does this at the end of the episode, only this time with Tommy joining in.
    "POWER RANGERS!"
  • Unstoppable Rage: The Megazord may be just a machine piloted by the Rangers, but somehow it's clearly showing a case of this as it curbstomps the Dragonzord.
