Recap / Martha Speaks S 2 E 9 Git Along Little Dogies

Go To

The Lorraines (except for Jake) are dressed up in Wild West clothes, on a bus driven by an old man who calls himself "Cookie", planning to go on something called a "cattle drive". When they arrive on a ranch full of cows, Martha learns what a "cattle drive" is, but makes "Cookie" mad when she says she wants a normal vacation. That night, "Cookie" serves a soup, which only the dogs and another cowboy like, and Martha angers him again when she complains about sleeping on the ground.

The next day, the Lorraines are asked to herd a bunch of cows, but Martha angers "Cookie" yet again when she dislikes the eponymous cowboy song (thinking "git along" means "get lost") and changes the lyrics to "Have a Seat, Little Dogies", which prompts the cows to sit down. Then, when the female Lorraines want to go sightseeing, this makes him even angrier.

That night, when Martha hears a wolf howling, she howls back, scaring the cows and making "Cookie" mad again, so he punishes her by locking her in the carriage. The next morning, she's eaten all the food she can get into, and then later accidentally scares the cows again due to running (actually after a prairie dog) so that night, "Cookie" ties her to a post.

However, when thunder scares both the cows again and the horses, and they're too scared to notice a nearby cliff, Martha and Skits dig up the post and give chase. Then, Martha saves the livestock by singing the "Have a Seat, Little Dogies" song to get them to sit down, and having everyone else do it too. On the bus ride home, "Cookie" finally apologises for being mean to Martha and calls her a good dog.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Martha and Skits wear bandannas.
  • Ate It All: Downplayed — Martha didn't eat all the food in the carriage, but she only didn't eat the canned food because she can't open cans.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: "Cookie's" common shtick is to say something would be nice, but then that they won't be doing it.
  • Balloon Belly: Martha looks fat after eating all the food she could get to.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The song Martha sings that makes the cows sit down ends up saving them when she sings to them so they won't fall off the cliff.
  • Copycat Mockery: When Martha says, "I want a vacation", "Cookie" angrily mimics her.
  • Cowboy Episode: The Lorraines (except Jake, who's staying with Lucille and Bernie) are on a ranch, herding cattle, and wearing Wild West clothes.
  • Damsel in Distress: A herd of cows ends up in danger of falling off a cliff that they're too scared to notice.
  • Dogs Hate Squirrels: Martha and Skits find the prairie dog annoying because it's kind of like a squirrel.
  • Edible Theme Naming: The grumpy cowboy guy calls himself Cookie.
  • Fear-Induced Idiocy: A herd of cows is so scared of thunder that they almost run off a cliff until Martha sings to them to sit down.
  • Fear of Thunder: In addition to the Lorraine dogs, the cows and horses are also scared of thunder.
  • Frothy Mugs of Water: Zigzagged. Martha imagines the cows singing "99 Bottles of Milk on the Wall", but it's unknown if this is to censor the word "beer" or just because they're cows.
  • Grumpy Old Man: "Cookie" is an elderly man who's always yelling at Martha, Helen, and to an extent, Mariella, whenever they say or do something he doesn't like.
  • Heroic Dog: Martha comes up with the idea of singing to the cows to make them sit down.
  • Imagine Spot: When Martha hears "cattle drive", she briefly imagines literally driving the cattle.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Martha didn't mean to scare the cattle when she imitated a wolf and ran after a prairie dog.
  • The Killjoy: "Cookie" doesn't want the Lorraines to go sightseeing; he wants them to work instead.
  • Loud Gulp: One of the times Martha angers "Cookie", he gulps.
  • Mirthless Laughter: When "Cookie" tells Martha off, she chuckles shyly.
  • Missing Mom: Apparently, the cows are all "dogies", which is slang for a motherless cow.
  • Mondegreen Gag: Martha initially mishears "dogies" as "doggies".
  • The Napoleon: "Cookie" is very cranky and yells at Martha and Helen a lot, and he's also about chest-height to Mariella.
  • Nature Lover: Danny chose this vacation due to being in "the great outdoors".
  • Only One Finds It Fun: The only one who really enjoys the cattle drive is Danny.
  • Pet the Dog: An example involving literal dog-petting occurs when "Cookie", after being cranky, especially at Martha, all episode, finally compliments her for her heroism and pets her.
  • Stock "Yuck!": Nobody likes the soup except for one cowboy and the Lorraine dogs.
  • Tempting Fate: Martha is sure she won't scare the cows for a second time, only for them to be scared of her running when she chases a prairie dog.
  • Vacation Episode: The Lorraines are at the ranch on their vacation.
  • You Can Talk?: "Cookie" is surprised the first time he hears Martha speaking.
