Recap / lonelygirl15 S01 The Cabin At The Lake

Go To

I'm stuck in a house Jonas rented. They never let me out. Lalalalala.
Bree succinctly summing up how things are the start of this arc, "I hAtE tHeSe PeOpLe"
Dates Posted: (2007) June 4-8, 11, 13, 15

Jonas has rented a cabin up by a lake, and after taking Bree there, the TAAG tries to deprogram her of her Hymn of One beliefs.

"I hAtE tHeSe PeOpLe": Bree tries to get her Eternal Song back while wondering why her friends kidnapped her. She also gets reacquainted with her stuffed animals.

"Bedside Manner": Jonas discusses the situation with Bree, then shows off the gang's attempts at helping Bree recover from her time with the Hymn of One.

"Taking Advantage of Her": Daniel complains that Jonas isn't giving him enough credit regarding helping Bree and that Jonas is taking advantage of Bree's brainwashed state, then has some fun with Sarah and P. Monkey.

"HOLY SH%T!!!": Sarah wanders through the house, and stumbles upon Bree and Jonas making out on the deck.

"The Morning After": Jonas discusses the recent "events" between him and Bree, then goes to check up on Bree in the bathroom... and finds that she's escaped again.

"Mr. Park Ranger": Jonas, Daniel, and Sarah go out searching for Bree, with varying levels of enthusiasm, something that causes some arguments along the way.

"Everybody Does It ;)": Sarah gives Jonas some relationship advice.

Jonas' email to Taylor: Jonas, who was in a foul mood already, is further angered by "Everybody Does It ;)" and sends Taylor - and the rest of the gang - an angry email.

"Like A Virgin": Taylor posts a scathing response to Jonas' email in defense of her sister.

"Going Home": Bree posts a goodbye message, attempting to explain why she wants to go and ending with an appeal to the Hymn of One to come pick her up.

Tropes:

  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Used by Jonas in "Mr. Park Ranger" when he gets fed up Daniel and Sarah screwing around during the search for Bree:
Daniel: Dude, just hang out for a minute!
Jonas: No, why-why don't you just go back to the cabin, you can cuddle, you can play with her blister, do whatever the hell you want, I don't really care!
  • Caption Humor: The outro to "Like A Virgin" has this:
Taylor: I'd like to thank everyone for joining me for this week's session of "De-constructing Jonas." I hope you can all join me next week, when I look into more of the many reasons why so many people...
    Caption: Like Jonas
Taylor: ...think that the world only revolves around them and their problems.
  • Censored Title: "HOLY SH%T!!!"
  • Deprogram: The TAAG attempts to do this with Bree in "Bedside Manner", but none of them meet with a lot of success.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: "Everybody Does It ;)" was likely intended by Sarah as sincere advice - if delivered a little bit flippantly - but Jonas interpreted as a personal attack, leading to his email to Taylor.
  • First Kiss: Bree and Jonas share their first kiss out on the deck in "HOLY SH%T!!!"
  • Food as Bribe: Sarah tries to feed Bree a goldfish cracker to get her to open up, but Bree knocks it to the floor.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: If the part of "Like A Virgin" where Taylor stomps around with the megaphone is slowed down, it's revealed that it's actually Taylor humming "Mexican Hat Dance".
  • Freudian Trio: The TAAG's various approaches to deprogramming veer into this in "Bedside Manner".
    • Daniel is the Superego, attempting an almost purely rational approach, by simply stating facts about the Hymn of One and attempting to question Bree on what happened while she was in their custody.
    • Sarah is the Id, doing somewhat child-like things with Bree with a purely emotional (the scratching her chin) or physical (trying to feed her) effort involved.
    • Jonas is the Ego, trying a mixed approach, first trying to relate to her by making observations about the scenery, then switching to trying to get a more emotional reaction out of her with goofy childlike antics.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Downplayed. Jonas was getting decent results with his efforts by goofing around in front of Bree which made her laugh, but as soon as he tries tickling her Daniel makes him stop, and it's not hard to see that he objected only to Jonas making physical, arguably flirtatious contact with Bree...
  • Heroic BSoD: Jonas has a small offscreen one while searching for Bree solo during "Mr. Park Ranger":
Jonas: I, uh, I found this lake, and I went down to the, the edge of it, and for some reason everything just collapsed in my mind, I mean, Bree, my parents, all this stuff with Alex. I'm out there, uh, losing it...
  • Hypocrite: In "Taking Advantage of Her", Daniel complains that Jonas is taking advantage of Bree while she's mentally compromised. This all coming from the guy who tried to hook up with Bree three weeks after she watched her dad get murdered in front of her.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In his email to Taylor, Jonas tries to mock Sarah for lacking "command of the english language"... while making a litany of spelling and grammar errors himself.
  • Imagined Innuendo:
    • While Sarah is flirting with Daniel in "Mr. Park Ranger", she takes the camera from him when Daniel wants to get back to the search:
Sarah: Mr. Park Ranger is being very naughty.
Daniel: Come on, give it to me.
      Sarah: Naughty, naughty boy.
    • Done deliberately by Taylor in "Like A Virgin" when she chooses to interpret Jonas' comment about Sarah getting "freaky pleasure" out of mocking him to mean he enjoyed giving her freaky pleasure.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: In "The Morning After", Jonas insists that Bree is back and over her brainwashing, and then he discovers that she ran away mere seconds after saying that.
  • Ironic Echo: In "Like A Virgin", Taylor throws Jonas' comment about Sarah being "callous" right back in his face, pointing out how callous Jonas was in the email.
  • It's All About Me: Taylor accuses Jonas of having this attitude in "Like A Virgin", and seeks to subvert it by explaining what's going on in Sarah's life.
  • Jerkass Ball: Jonas grabs this with both hands in his email, being extremely condescending to Sarah and going after Taylor for trying to help and failing.
  • Killer Rabbit: Invoked by Sarah in "Mr. Park Ranger" when the topic of squirrels comes up.
Jonas: Nothing. It's nothing, prob—probably a squirrel or something. Let's keep going.
Sarah: (as the camera swings over to her) Those things are ferocious.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Sarah mentions in "Everybody Does It ;)" that she's had sex on kitchen counters and dining tables before.
  • Mirthless Laughter: Bree giggles briefly while clearly on the edge of tears during "I hAtE tHeSe PeOpLe".
  • Misplaced Retribution: In his email to Taylor, Jonas decides to take out some of his anger over Bree leaving and Daniel and Sarah not doing much to help out by chewing out Taylor for not succeeding in her genuine effort to help out.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Alexandra's natural British accent slips in a very odd way during "Everybody Does It ;)" when she says "scenario": she actually maintains a perfect American accent, but uses the British pronunciation.
  • Piggyback Cute: In "Taking Advantage of Her", Daniel films Jonas giving Bree a piggyback ride back to the house as they return from a walk in the woods.
  • Plot Hole: "Going Home": So Bree's been wandering in the wilderness for a week since running away in "The Morning After"... how is she still alive? Fans have come up with plausible explanations, but the show never bothered.
  • Public Secret Message: Inverted by Jonas' email. Jonas sent it to Taylor, but also CC'd Sarah and BCC'd Daniel, ensuring both of them would see this nominally private message.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Daniel emphasizes his plan for Bree at the end of "Taking Advantage of Her" this way:
Daniel: If Bree's trait-negative, the Order. Won't. Want. Her. Any. More.
  • "Ray of Hope" Ending: Despite their apparently failed efforts throughout the day and Jonas' annoyance at Daniel spending time with Sarah instead of helping Bree, Bree comes by and sits next to Jonas at the end of "Bedside Manner".
  • Rouge Angles of Satin: The computer in the Jonas animation in "Like A Virgin" is labeled "compooter".
  • Safety in Indifference: Encouraged by Sarah in "Everybody Does It ;)" as a way to prevent emotional pain related to sex.
Sarah: The point is fun, not love. Here's the thing. The minute you attach a bunch of lame love feelings to sex, you really ruin all the fun. Worst case scenario: love leads to marriage, marriage is boring and totally bad for your health. Don't believe me? Ask my mom. Two other things can happen when you fall in love, and both suck. Either get your heart broken, or you can break someone else's heart. See? Both suck.
  • Shaped Like Itself: From "Mr. Park Ranger", when Jonas asks Sarah if she recognizes if they were in that same spot earlier:
Sarah: This is what I see: trees plus sticks equals... trees and sticks.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Jonas' coffee mug in "The Morning After" has the Schoolhouse Rock! logo on it.
    • The title of "Like A Virgin", to the Madonna song "Like A Virgin".
    • The card Taylor holds up near the end of "Like A Virgin" has Sarah and Colossus looking suspiciously like Dorothy and Toto from The Wizard of Oz.
  • Shower of Love: Sarah claims in "Everybody Does It ;)" that she's done it in the shower and it's "always fun".
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: The music in the first half of "HOLY SH%T!!!" is creepy and suspenseful, but ends up leading to an affectionate kiss, at which point the music becomes more appropriate. Likely Played for Laughs given how over the top creepy music is.
  • Spoofed with Their Own Words: In "Like A Virgin", Taylor does this subtly by repeating Jonas' "Just between you and I" line, which is gramatically incorrect.
  • Stepford Smiler: Bree in a couple shots at the beginning of "I hAtE tHeSe PeOpLe" is smiling while on the verge of tears.
  • Stylistic Suck: The Jonas animation in "Like A Virgin", which looks like it could've been drawn in MS Paint.
  • Styrofoam Rocks: Jonas' coffee mug in "The Morning After" clearly does have any coffee in it, as he would've spilled it.
  • Sudden Downer Ending: In "The Morning After", Jonas is upbeat, him and Bree have gotten together, she's over her brainwashing... and then he goes into the bathroom and she's escaped.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: In the middle of his rant at the end of "Taking Advantage of Her", Daniel mentions, several times in a row, that he is not mad at Jonas because he's still into Bree or he's jealous or anything like that.
  • Symbol Swearing: Occurs in the title of "HOLY SH%T!!!"
  • Was It All a Lie?: Jonas reveals at the end of "Mr. Park Ranger" that he's wondering this about Bree and wants her to "look [him] in the eye and tell [him] that wasn't real."
  • Wham Episode:
    • "The Morning After" ends with Bree having run away after spending the night with Jonas.
    • "Going Home" has Bree announcing that she's going to rejoin the Hymn of One and telling the rest of the gang to stop looking for her.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Jonas hits Daniel and Sarah with this during "Mr. Park Ranger", multiple times.
    • He chews them out in person when Daniel and Sarah talk about going back to the cabin during the search and goes on alone.
    • He does it again at the end of the video after playing a clip Daniel shot showing him and Sarah flirting while they were out searching.
Jonas: Once again, real helpful, just like with the deprogramming. Bottom line is, we still have no idea where she is. I'm crazy, right, because I still care, after everything?

"You don't trust me either and I can't trust you. What kind of friendship is that? Just go, go on, move on with your lives, have lives, have fun, be happy, know that I am happy! Forever..."
