Recap / Cloak & Dagger (2018) S 01 E 10 "Colony Collapse"

Go To

Everything comes to a head for Tyrone and Tandy as the city of New Orleans is thrown into chaos. The two realize that it is time they face their destiny and test their powers as “The Divine Pairing” to save the city.

  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Tyrone blips into the middle of the attack on the police station so he can corral the Terrors and save the cops not yet infected.
    • O'Reilly later shows up with a sniper rifle to save Tyrone and Tandy from a mob of Terrors.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Tyrone and Tandy are able to shut off the Core channeling the merged Darkforce and Lightforce without any of them dying and succeed in curing the Terrors and preventing the people of New Orleans from killing themselves. Roxxon's role in the events becomes public, and with Scarborough catatonic, Tandy and Melissa don't need to fear retribution from the vengeful MegaCorp, which has bigger problems. With Connors absorbed into the Darkforce dimension and O'Reilly presumed dead, there is no one to exonerate Tyrone of Fuchs's murder, but Connors has at last been hit with a lasting karmic comeuppance he can't slither out of. Tyrone is forced to hide in Tandy's church, but Tandy knows where to find him and his parents know he's alive. The last scene of the season shows O'Reilly emerging from a swamp, clearly affected by the merged Darkforce and Lightforce, and developing some kind of super-speed, implying she will become Mayhem.
  • Bury Your Gays: The Divine Pairing during the 1918 influenza epidemic. The doctor saved his lover and dozens of other patients (because magic) but died himself.
  • Continuity Nod: Scarborough namedrops "the Starks and the Rands."
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: Tyrone is unable to get away from the cops when they corner him, since it's broad daylight and it'll reveal his powers.
  • Framing Device: The stories of the previous Divine Pairings, told by Chantelle to Evita.
  • Hate Plague: The Terrors from Ivan's nightmare are back and threatening to destroy New Orleans.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: One of the Divine Pairing has to die to save the city. Tyrone decides it's going to be him. Tandy decides he's wrong.
  • Holding Hands: Tandy and Ty do this to purify the merged Darkforce and Lightforce, and keep holding hands as they lie down from the strain.
  • Hope Spot: Tyrone almost talks the Dirty Cop guarding him and O'Reilly into doing the right thing, only to be interrupted by another cop walking in.
  • Hourglass Plot: At the end, Tandy's home and family are restored, while Ty goes to live in the church Tandy used to live in.
  • It's Always Mardi Gras in New Orleans: The show has been building toward it, and we finally get it.
  • Karma Houdini: Ashile, the Roxxon hitwoman, gets away.
  • Magic Feather: Played with. The cloak itself gets shredded and with it Tyrone's ability to control his powers, as he relied on the emotional comfort it gave him to give him stability. Tandy convinces him that he doesn't need the cloak, but gives him Billy's jacket anyway, since they don't have the time to heal his deeper issues.
  • Mama Bear: Melissa steps up. Tandy talks long enough and distractingly enough that she can grab hold of a kitchen knife and stab the Roxxon hit-woman with it.
  • Mind Rape: Tandy traps Scarborough within the vault of his own mind.
  • Mythology Gag: The Roxxon facility is coded 616, which is the numbering of the reality in which the mainstream Marvel Universe takes place.
  • Police Brutality: Even though Tyrone surrenders willingly, the cops arresting him slam him on O'Reilly's hood anyway.
  • The Reveal: The energy source that Roxxon is drilling for isn't just the Darkforce. It's the Darkforce mixed with the Lightforce, and merging the two energies has corrupted them. Tandy and Tyrone have to absorb their respective energies to purify them and cure the Terrors.
  • Screw Destiny: In the past, one of the Divine Pairing has always died saving the city. Ty tries to be that one, but Tandy refuses and works with him to purge the corrupted energy, saving them both.
  • Shipper on Deck: After seeing Tyrone and Evita together at the church, Tandy encourages Tyrone to be with Evita.
Tandy: You know, on second throw, I don't hate you two together. If the city doesn't destroy itself, you should lock that down.
  • Shown Their Work: Black and native folk have worked together to survive white supremacy, hence the tribes of New Orleans.
Cop: One of your Red Hawks seems to have gone off the reservation.
Big Chief: I know you think you're being clever, but the fact is, that's quite racist. Our native brothers and sisters helped our people survive under slavery.
  • Slipped the Ropes: O'Reilly breaks her thumb to get out of her cuffs.
  • Super-Speed: O'Reilly gains this power as a result of getting lethally shot after being exposed to the merged Darkforce and Lightforce.
  • Villainous Rescue: When Connors is taking Tyrone and O'Reilly to execute the two, an axe-wielding Terror comes crashing into the police station.
  • Willing Suspension of Disbelief: Yeah, Billy's hoody would've survived 8 years with Tandy. No problem.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Ty appeals to the cop keeping watch over him and O'Reilly, pointing out they're both NO natives, they both have families, that he's supposed to be a cop. It looks like it's working, then another Dirty Cop walks in...
