Recap / Bob's Burgers S4E21 "Wharf Horse"

Go To

Felix Fischoeder tries to recruit Bob in a plan to sell Wonder Wharf to high-end condo developers.

Trope Horse:

  • Brick Joke: Felix says that Calvin is drawn to Bob because his arm hair reminds him of their father. Later, Calvin obsessively looks at Bob’s arm hair.
  • Cain and Abel: Calvin Fischoeder is the Big Brother Bully to Felix the Butt-Monkey... which makes the ending so much more jarring when Bob learns the hard way that Felix is the Cain and Calvin is the Abel.
  • The Cameo: Jimmy Pesto and Dr. Yap can be seen in the crowd at Wonder Wharf.
  • Childhood Memory Demolition Team: Tina is very attached to the old merry-go-round at the wharf, and is distraught that it's being torn down. Louise gets the idea to use a large bicycle lock to chain her to it and the workers try to save it, but the head gets knocked off as they try to remove the horse. Gene and Louise are not that concerned, since they recognize how crappy the merry-go-round is; they just go along with Tina for their amusement.
  • Cliffhanger: Felix holding Calvin and Bob at gunpoint.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When they’re stuck at the top of the Scream-I-Cane, Gene, covering his eyes, asks if he’s at home watching The Closer. Louise says he is, and when he opens his eyes, Gene says "AHHH! This episode takes place on the Scream-I-Cane!"
  • Continuity Nod: When Felix drags Bob into the restaurant's bathroom, we can see it still has the fancy redesign Felix gave it in "Ambergris". Felix even acknowledges it.
  • Dreadful Musician: Fanny, which is ironic given her core motivation for the sale of Wonder Wharf is to own a nightclub and recording studio.
  • Evil Laugh: Felix does it as he offers a handshake to Bob. He claims he just thought of something funny from earlier, but Bob is still unnerved. When Felix does another evil laugh at the end of the episode, Bob asks if Felix thought of something funny again, only for Felix to confirm that no, he's laughing maniacally.
  • Either/Or Title: The full title is "Wharf Horse (or How Bob Saves/Destroys the Town—Part I)".
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: The nicknames for the various deformed carousel horses are more or less accurate descriptions of them: Lady Big Nose has an oversized muzzle, Mr. Goiter has a huge lump on its throat, Henry Human Feet somehow has mannequin feet instead of hooves and Mr. Down There Hair's bushy tail arcs between its hind legs. There's also Dr. Big Butt, but it gets smashed offscreen.
  • Foreshadowing: One scene in the credits sequence shows Bob and Calvin back-to-back, with them being divided by a thick vertical line in the middle before the scene fills with water. The scene hints towards their predicament in the next episode—namely, they're tied to the pier so that the tide can drown them.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Subverted. During "Nice Things Are Nice", Tina refers to Mr. Goiter as a "her", but quickly clarifies that Mr. Goiter is in fact male—she just wanted her lyrics to rhyme.
  • Gold Digger: Clearly Fanny is with Felix because she loves him.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Felix claims he hates degrading nicknames a split-second before calling his girlfriend a "dirty flirty little squeeze-thing".
  • Let Me Get This Straight...: Linda has this reaction to Bob's plan to get Calvin to sell Wonder Wharf... and she's completely on-board.
  • Loose Lips: Linda tells Fanny about the plan mere feet from Calvin Fischoeder (the one person who cannot know the plan under any circumstances). Bob has to tell Linda that both he and Calvin can hear her "whispering".
  • May–December Romance: Felix Fischoeder is in his sixties, while his girlfriend Fanny is 29.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Felix's response to being called "girl pooper" is to shout, "This is boarding school all over again!"
    • Bob once ate and pooped out dice.
  • Oh, Crap!: Bob, when he realizes that Felix is pointing a gun at him.
  • Only in Florida: "You can't leave a kidnapping to go shopping! This isn't Florida!"
  • Only One Finds It Fun: Tina is the only one who finds the boring and disturbing carousel fun.
  • Overly Long Name: When Felix suggests that Bob could open a new location, his proposed name is "Bob's Bistro on the Beach with the Burgers". Bob later amends it to the much shorter "Bob's Bistro on the Beach", and during "Nice Things Are Nice" he refers to it as the equally-short "Bob's Beach Burgers & Fries".
  • Pass the Popcorn: Louise and Gene can be seen eating popcorn while watching the carousel's destruction.
  • Protest by Obstruction: With a little "encouragement" from Louise, Tina winds up chaining herself to Mr. Goiter to protect him from the carousel's destruction.
  • Red Herring: It's clear from the start that the Fischoeders have a downplayed Cain and Abel dynamic going on. However, one is led to believe that Calvin is the Cain and Felix is the Abel, only for the ending to reveal it's the other way around.
  • Rule of Three: Tina has three flashbacks to riding Mr. Goiter. The first two times, she's a toddler or a little kid and she almost falls off the horse before Bob catches her. The third time, she's her current age and she falls off completely while waving at Bob.
  • Sanity Slippage: Calvin triumphantly declaring that he'll never sell Wonder Wharf causes Felix to go completely off the deep end.
  • Skyward Scream: The top of the Wonder Wharf Ferris wheel is where Bob found out that Linda was pregnant with Louise. According to both of them, Bob just kept screaming.
  • Spanner in the Works: Tina getting herself chained to Mr. Goiter completely derails the sale of Wonder Wharf.
  • Stage Whisper: Linda tries to whisper when talking about the plan to get Calvin to sell Wonder Wharf... right next to Calvin. Bob later does this when telling Tina that Calvin has agreed to the plan... right next to a ton of bystanders (though Tina's loud reaction would've given it away anyway).
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: When Tina attempts a Protest by Obstruction to prevent men from destroying the carousel, the men in charge of the demolition simply cut the horse free from the ride and move her out of the way.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Mr. Fischoeder claims that the Scream-I-Cane is the same old ride "without any lost limbs". When he and Bob actually ride it, he doesn't even use subtleties, outright stating that limbs have come off.
  • Swallow the Key: Louise chains Tina to Mr. Goiter using Teddy's bike lock and convinces her to swallow the only key. Based on her request for water, it wasn't quite a pleasant experience.
  • Tempting Fate: After Mr. Goiter is cut from the ride, Tina remarks that at least Mr. Goiter is safe. Mr. Goiter promptly hits the top of the carousel and gets decapitated.
  • That Reminds Me of a Song: To convince Calvin to sell Wonder Wharf, Bob sings a song about things that could happen if he did, called "Nice Things Are Nice".
  • Wham Shot: Everything seems to have been resolved, and Bob talks with Calvin about the day's events... cut to Felix pointing a fully loaded gun at him and Calvin.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Gene still has a crippling fear of the Scream-I-Cane.
