Recap / Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S3 E6 "Among Us Hide..."

Go To

Coulson joins Rosalind for a look into the ATCU, Daisy continues the search for Lash, and Bobbi and May track down Werner von Strucker.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguously Evil: It has yet to be shown what Gideon Malick's motivations are, but he aids Ward in crossing off Werner.
  • Arc Welding: The two plotlines of HYDRA/Ward and The Inhumans/ATCU/Lash are finally joined together when HYDRA's attempt on Dr. Garner's life reveals his alternate self; a fact only learned by Werner and then ultimately told to May.
  • Bullying a Dragon: HYDRA unknowingly did this when they tried to assassinate the man who can transform into Lash.
  • Butt-Monkey: Hunter gets belittled by everyone in this episode for his stupidity two episodes previously.
  • The Bus Came Back: Gideon Malick (Powers Boothe), who went unnamed in his appearance in The Avengers, returns, now with a name.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Bobbi and May burst in on Kebo as he works on torturing Werner. The interruption prompts him to stab Werner in the gut, but Werner manages to stay conscious long enough for the revelation to May before passing out.
  • Combat Pragmatist: After Kebo proves too much for Bobbi in a straight fight, she uses her staves to electrocute him while he's in a pool.
  • Cowboy Cop: Hunter. Daisy and Mack are debating how to stealthily track and trail Banks, suspecting him of being Lash and not wanting to cause problems with the ATCU. Hunter hops out of the van with a bandanna tied around his face, strolls right up to Banks, and shoots him with an ICER.
  • Creepy Good: Rosalind keeps Inhumans in creepy suspended animation pods. She's well aware of how it looks, but insists it's just like putting someone in a medically induced coma until a cure is found. Once again, her heart is in the right place, but her methods are on the extreme end.
  • Cutting the Knot: Rather than a complicated snatch and grab, Hunter just knocks Banks out with an icer and takes him. Then, because they don't have medical equipment to take a blood sample, he just breaks the guy's nose.
  • Double-Meaning Title: As noted below, the episode title is a Mythology Gag to the comic that first introduced the Inhumans to the Marvel Universe. It also refers to the fact that Lash was hiding among the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents as Dr. Andrew Garner.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Hunter points out that rather than tailing Banks, simply knocking him out and taking a blood sample would prove if he's an Inhuman.
Daisy: That's actually kind of smart...
  • Electrified Bathtub: Bobbi defeats Kebo by using her electrified escrima sticks while he's trying to get out of a swimming pool the two had previously been fighting in.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Gideon Malick, from Wolfgang von Strucker's generation of HYDRA, disapproves of Ward having sent Werner on a serious mission before he was fully trained. He's still willing to sell him out to Ward, but that's out of pragmatism.
  • Fair-Play Whodunnit: Anyone paying enough attention would immediately know Banks was only a Red Herring, as a couple episodes earlier, we clearly saw him at the same time that Lash was active.
  • False Friend: Werner turns to his lifelong surrogate father figure Gideon to try and gain protection from Ward's wrath. While Gideon assures Werner of his safety, he later arranges with Ward to hand over Werner as part of some greater deal.
  • Foreshadowing: In his paranoid deconstruction of Rosalind's "fake break-in" (not fake?), Coulson gets pretty much everything wrong. Rosalind's new to the area, her dead husband was a baseball fan... and Rosalind was attempting to woo him with food from his favorite burger joint, being genuinely interested in him. "Yeah, why else would I get this food?" indeed, Rosalind.
    • Andrew's recap of the botched hit on him has a flashback to the lighter Strucker had sliding into a pool of gasoline and setting it alight. The actual shot showed the lighter sitting stationary and flaring up when the gasoline flowed to it, the first hint that it's not how things actually went.
  • Human Popsicle: ATCU has their captured Inhumans put into containment with suspended animation gel.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Daisy tells Hunter he has anger issues (which Hunter does admit to after punching an unconscious Banks to draw blood), but when she reveals that she stole Fitz's upgraded Dwarf, she gets stares from Hunter. Daisy admits she has issues too.
  • Just Following Orders: May is very angry at Hunter for going after Ward in the previous episode resulting in the possible death of her ex-husband. Hunter tries to defend himself by saying he was under orders from Coulson that if he sees Ward, to take a shot.
    Coulson: Yeah, and you missed.
  • Living MacGuffin: Werner von Strucker. S.H.I.E.L.D. wants to find him so they can locate Ward, while Ward wants him dead to prevent this information and other HYDRA secrets from leaking out.
  • Magic Pants: Andrew's shirt is destroyed when changing into Lash, but his pants survive the transformation and its reversal.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Hunter, of all people, indirectly suggests that Fitz should just leave Will on the alien planet because he's competition.
  • Mythology Gag: The title of the episode is a reference to Fantastic Four Vol 1 #45, the very first Marvel comic that introduced the Inhumans, titled AMONG US HIDE... THE INHUMANS!
  • Never My Fault: Ward, as usual. This time, he blames Kebo for letting Hunter in and allowing him to almost assassinate Ward. Kebo responds that he merely followed Ward's protocol, and on his defense, Kebo was Locked Out of the Loop and genuinely didn't know that Hunter is from S.H.I.E.L.D..
  • Never Trust a Trailer:
    • The trailer starts with the narration "The death of her ex," whereas Andrew is shown to be alive at the very beginning of the episode.
    • The narration concludes with "Too bad HYDRA saw them coming," implying that Ward sets up a trap for S.H.I.E.L.D., though this never happens.
  • The Reveal: It turns out that Lash is none other than Andrew Garner.
  • Secret Test of Character: A relatively quick one: May provokes Bobbi into a fight specifically to determine whether Bobbi is able to handle fieldwork again.
  • Sherlock Scan: Coulson quickly deconstructs the "break-in" at Rosalind's house, noting the expensive signed bat, new furniture, conspicuously not-stolen electronics, and food from his own favorite burger joint. Ultimately, it turns out subverted, because Rosalind had just moved in, the bat had belonged to her deceased husband, and the food was an attempt to woo him because she was genuinely interested in him.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The eighth of Fitz's Dwarf Drones, all of which were named after the Seven Dwarves, has a stealth mode, reminiscent of Once Upon a Time's eighth dwarf named Stealthy.
    • The pods that the Inhumans are being kept looks similar to the pod that Neo emerges from in the real world from The Matrix
  • Skewed Priorities: Werner only tells Malick about how horrible and what kind of a monster Ward is, and never even once mentions that he was almost killed by a monstrous Inhuman (Lash).
  • So Much for Stealth: Mack says this word for word, after Hunter leaves the van he, Mack, and Daisy are hiding in, and shoots Banks with an I.C.E.R., believing him to be Lash.
  • Third Line, Some Waiting: The C Plot involving the planet Simmons was trapped on takes a significant backseat after taking up all of the previous episode.
  • Traitor Shot: In The Stinger, Andrew glances into the camera, as if confirming that he is, indeed, bad news.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: The hunt for Ward and the conflict with Lash and the ATCU both make significant progress this episode.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: We finally learn of the nature of the ATCU and Rosalind's motivations, and they seem to be in this category. She wants to find a cure for Terrigenesis, because she believes Inhumanity to be a disease comparable to cancer.
  • Wham Line: Werner recounting his attempt on Andrew's life.
Werner: I didn't know he'd turn into that thing.
  • You Have Failed Me: Ward orders a hit on Werner for botching the hit on Andrew.
