  • Discussed in this article by linguist Gretchen McCulloch, which breaks down some of the linguistic principles behind what makes a good ship name. She isolates five major factors:
    1) Overlap (ie. shared letters or sounds in the characters' names)
    2) Stress Match (ie. stressing the same syllables in the portmanteau as in the original names)
    3) Onset Conversation (ie. whoever has the most consonants in a row at the beginning of their name goes first in the portmanteau)
    4) Orthographic Transparency (ie. the pronunciation is easily deducible from spelling/resembles how the characters' names are spelt)
    5) Lexical Neighbourhood Evaluation (ie. possible similarities to existing words, either positive or negative)
  • Discussed in Allison Pregler's Q&A video, when one fan asks if she, as a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, ships "Bangel" or "Spuffy." She shoots down both options and wonders if anyone ships Buffy with Scott, suggesting that the pairing could be called "Butt."
  • Answer Me This: Helen and Martin's solution to what to do with their names once they are married.
  • Chakona Space: A canon example in the form of Charles and Katherine Turner, the creators of Chakats.
    • Strange example: Quickwind and Shortdash have a cub named Quickdash. One winds up wondering if they plan on having a second cub.
  • Critical Role uses this for a few ships. Official Couple Vax'ildan and Keyleth go by Vaxleth: Vax and Gilmore are Vaxmore, and Vax and Percy go by Perc'ildan. Kima and Allura are Kimallura. There's also Perc'ahlia for Percy and Vex'ahlia, although they also get the fun ship label Hunter's Hex.
  • Tony the Clock and Sketchbook from the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared series often get shipped together under the name PadLock (SketchPAD and cLOCK).
  • Emma Approved has Emex from Brent Bailey's Instragram and Knighthouse from a YouTube comment for the Emma/Alex pairing.
  • Emma Blackery had one in the form of #Demma - herself and Nerd³. However, the pairing was sunk when Emma confirmed her relationship with another man.
  • Gaia Online has The Sentinel and The Overseer, who some people ship as "Sentiseer".
  • In season four of The Guild, Zaboo has this priceless line:
Zaboo: I'm Team Codex/Fawkes. Team Cawkes!
  • Jake and Amir: Jake/Amir is Jamir or Blumenwitz, which is German for "flower joke".
  • Jet Lag: The Game: "Badam" for Ben & Adam. Scotty refers to them by this name in Japan E6, and Ben does the same in Arctic Escape E2.
  • Last Life has lead witches Sloane and Taylor come together as "Slaylor".
  • The Lizzie Bennet Diaries has an In-Universe example of "Jing" for Jane/Bing, coined by Lydia in one episode. The fandom also uses "Dizzie" for Darcy/Lizzie, "Lyckham" for Lydia/George Wickham, and "Figi" for Fitz/Gigi.
  • In The Nostalgia Critic, Hyper Fangirl and Devil Boner is Hyper Boner, which gets a lot of fun usage as a Double Entendre. There's quite a lot of of dirty wordplay with the shipping name during their wedding.
"I'll admit, I didn't think Hyper Boner was a good idea. But after seeing all of the joy displayed, it's clear that Hyper Boner's going to last a long time."
"If ever anybody sees you, they'll say, 'You can't keep Hyper Boner down.'"
  • Whenever the Smosh Games crew does a teamup, their team's names are usually based on a combination of their members' names. Some examples are: "Marhinki" (Mari and Sohinki), "Iancorn" (Ian and Lasercorn) and "Jovanthony" (Jovenshire and Anthony). Of course, this is what their respective ships are called, and the crew jokingly encourages it anyway.
  • The broship of Liam "Brook" Brooks and Jason Harris from Survival of the Fittest is generally referred to as "Brason."
    • Sarah Xu and Reiko Ishida, who are often called "Sareiko" when mentioned together.
  • Welcome To Nightvale: Most notably: "Cecilos" for the couple Cecil Palmer and Carlos the scientist.
  • Whateley Universe examples: there is ongoing debate about Phase's dating path, since he is dating Vanessa (Vox) now but close friends with Jadis (She-Beast). This leads to the Vanayla vs. Jayla discussions. Or is that Aylis? The Jayla ship was sunk when they went on a date and nothing came of it, at the time.
    • In-Universe, said about Jenny + Harlan in The Big Idea:
Jenny and Harlan sat down at the lunch table across from Adalie and Romy. “Well,” Adalie greeted them snidely, “if it isn’t Whateley’s latest power couple, Jenlan.”
  • Crossover Ship example: "Emelia" (Chuggaaconroy x Melia)
