Fanfic / A Big Blue House in Tall Pine Grove
aka: Tall Pine Tales

Go To

A Big Blue House in Tall Pine Grove is a fanfic based on Bear in the Big Blue House, penned by NoonboryKedabory and billed as a continuation of the original series.

Bear and his little gang of friends have moved into a new Big Blue House in a secluded cul-de-sac surrounded by pine trees, known as Tall Pine Grove. There, they go on their usual funny adventures with their new friends, Sandrine the Parisian kitty, university student Theresa, shy calf Lumpy, and the three fireflies, Shine, Bright, and Diamond. There also happens to be a Fraggle hole near the community garden, making the story a crossover with Fraggle Rock.

Additionally, some stories featuring the location have been published outside the main fanfic. These stories are called Tall Pine Tales, and typically focus on the supporting cast outside the Big Blue House. In addition, Bear and the others appear in the first, sixth, and eleventh chapters of Kedabory's Muppet Mania.

    General
  • Affectionate Nickname: Theresa usually refers to Boober as "Boo".
  • Color-Coded Characters: The three new core characters; Sandrine has a pink house and a pink dress, Theresa has a red house and a red shirt, and Lumpy has a yellow cottage and a yellow dress.
  • Gratuitous French: Being from Paris, Sandrine often peppers her dialogue with French phrases and pronunciations.
  • Meaningful Name: "Theresa" is not too far off from "Therapist", and the surname "Grant" means "of the pine woods". Altogether, the name "Theresa Grant" means "Therapist of Tall Pine Grove".
  • Pink Means Feminine: Sandrine, a very feminine kitty, wears a pink dress.
  • Put on a Bus: Because the pine trees in the grove are so tall, the sky can't easily be seen, so Bear is unable to talk to Luna at night. The first chapter ends with Luna leaving Bear a letter, and Bear meeting Luna's firefly friends, who he can talk to instead.
  • Shout-Out: The three fireflies are named Shine, Bright, and Diamond. Shine bright like a diamond.
  • Species Surname: Sandrine Kitty, a cat, and Lumpy Cow, a calf. Theresa, a human, instead has the surname Grant.
  • Team Mom: To go along with Bear being the understanding, yet playful Team Dad, Theresa is the gentle, reassuring, motherly friend.

Tropes exclusive to the main story
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: When Tutter gets excited, he yells "Holy cheese!".
  • No Fourth Wall: Bear talks to the reader just like in the original series.
  • Quizzical Tilt: Treelo cocks his head at Bear when he hears that the new house has an otter pond, just like the old house.
  • Rule of Three: In the first chapter, the kids loudly shout for Bear offscreen three times; first by Tutter to show him the mouse hole, second by Pip and Pop to show him the otter pond, and third by Ojo to come meet the new neighbours.

Tropes exclusive to Tall Pine Tales
  • Fear of Thunder: In Paging Dr. Theresa, Wembley is freaked out by thunder and abandons the card game to instead go cozy up with Boober.
  • Hot Drink Cure: In Paging Dr. Theresa, Sandrine mentions that chamomile tea helps her feel better when she's sick.
  • I've Heard of That — What Is It?: Paging Dr. Theresa: Wembley is excited to learn first aid, then immediately asks what first aid is.
  • Literal-Minded: Paging Dr. Theresa: Theresa's diagnosis is the stomach bug. Wembley assumes it's caught by eating bugs.
  • Meaningful Echo: Paging Dr. Theresa: When Theresa asks her friends what they do when they're sick, Lumpy tells her that she cuddles her stuffed elephant, because it makes her feel safe and forget about being sick. Later, when Theresa asks Boober what he thinks will make him feel better, and he asks her to hold him, because it makes him feel safe and forget about being sick.
  • Ruptured Appendix: Discussed in Paging Dr. Theresa; Theresa asks Boober if he feels a sharp pain in his lower left, and explains what an appendix is and what happens if it ruptures. This, of course, scares poor Boober silly, and he insists that, if Fraggles have appendixes, his is fine.
  • Sick Episode: Paging Dr. Theresa, where Boober falls very ill with gastroenteritis, and because the Fraggles don't know how to treat it, they bring him to Theresa.
  • Soup Is Medicine: Deconstructed in Paging Dr. Theresa; Theresa makes vegetable soup, but Boober is only able to hold down a few spoonfuls, and having a foreign substance in his body makes him feel worse.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Paging Dr. Theresa: Any instance of vomit happens offscreen, and only the aftermath is shown.
