I think we should add a History Repeats entry to the page as the "Pillars of Equestria" are ancient history to the main characters, so they become to the main characters of "My Little Pony: A New Generation". Thoughts?

So for the Fighter, Mage, Thief trope, shouldn't we add Pinkie Pie and Spike to the list?

I could see Pinkie Pie as the Thief, as she did show some moments of stealth. She also can confuse people with her words and actions. For Spike, I could see him as possibly the mage with his fire breath, and being life-long friend/family member of an actual mage.

Any discussion about this?

Pinkie Pie doesn't seem to invite her teddy bear to her parties. Fridge Brilliance kicks in that maybe she loves it just a tad too much.

In Season Six, we've had four different Starlight Glimmer episodes announced, one is coming up and another one is coming soon in Episode 8.

I think it's something to consider.

The only problem is, she almost exclusively appears only in those focus episodes and almost never as part of the group outside of that. When asked about her lack of appearances this season the Word of God on the matter was that she's a recurring character. Currently, people are going to have to go with that.

The finale could change things however, so I think we're going to get a definitive answer from both the show and the staff after that.

TerasOde Since: Oct, 2012

So, coming back from the UK release of the finale, they really seemed to stress that everyone on Starlight's team (including her) are secondary characters and they were keeping her separate from the Mane group, even after the resolution and till the ending credits.

People are either going to have to wait for the next season premiere or take it with the staff on twitter, if they want different answers on that.

Red Oni, Blue Oni. It's about a pair of characters, not a spectrum. I've seen it used in more than one place about this show, though. Anyone care to give arguments for why it's appropriate?

Also, it gives both "Look Before You Sleep" and "Sisterhooves Social" as evidence for Red Oni Applejack and Blue Oni Rarity. "Look Before You Sleep", I can see, but "Sisterhooves Social" gives the opposite impression.

To ride off of this topic, as it has reminded me of something. I've noticed that oftentimes when Applejack and Rarity are together, Rarity is often made to be less mature than she normally is to play up the contrast between them. Is there any trope that describes this?

Is Pinkie Pie really a example of Badass Normal?

Pinkie is Basically Spiderman in pony vesion. (Super-Speed, and Spider-Sense)

To say that Pinkie Pie is a Badass Normal, is like saying Spiderman is also a Badass Normal.

I've noticed quite a few episode pages mentioning Twilight being Adorkable. Given that this tropes is right under her Character Sheet portrait I'd think it is enough of a defining characteristic that it doesn't need to be brought up every time she does something adorkable (correlates with screentime.)

Permission to remove episode references to Twilight's adorkableness?

Regarding shimaspawn's Zero Context No Example thing: Don't some tropes just speak for themselves? Like Applejack's Nice Hat (There's a picture of her wearing it even), Pinkie's Alliterative Name, Spike's Four-Fingered Hands or anyone who's a Large Ham and so on? There's no need to be redundant.

kraas Since: Nov, 2009

If this kind of trope is present, it should be noted in the character's entry. That's the context. If you just threw Nice Hat onto the main page and expected people to know you're referring to Applejack, that is zero context. If you put the trope on the character's page, and there's a picture, then you can just put Nice Hat or Four-Fingered Hands (maybe noting, 'as seen in his/her picture above').

If it's for a work that doesn't have a characters page, you should say "Nice Hat: So-and-so wears one, it's (describe)." or "Four-Fingered Hands: So-and-so." If it is a trope like Deadpan Snarker, give an example of them being snarky.

Also, it's Zero Context Example, not Zero Context No Example, which isn't even a page.

What's with the ordering of the mane cast? It looks like the order in which they're introduced in episode 1, but if that's the case, Pinkie should be either third or last.

Removed this one:

  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Within the six, there are three pairs of ponies who are noticeably closer to each other than the others.
    • Rarity and Fluttershy: The two regularly go on spa dates, and Fluttershy is the first to be called when Rarity tries to figure out what is wrong with the first set of Gala dresses.
    • Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash: This is cemented when the two bond over pranking.
    • Twilight Sparkle and Applejack: They turn to each other first for advice and comfort.
    • Interestingly, they all seem to alternate these positions recently. In particular, Rainbow Dash has been shown with Fluttershy quite often, Pinkie Pie with Twilight, and Applejack with Rarity.

The last point hints at it already, but it doesn't go far enough. Basically this is calling characters life partners based on things that each happened in about one episode. They go on spa dates, and she's the first one she calls about the dresses — and that makes them life partners? Yet that was the strongest case made out of them all. The best case for this trope would be to say that it applies to all six of them together, not in pairs, but I don't think that's how it's supposed to work either.

And:

  • Friend to Bugs: Every main character except Pinkie (though especially Fluttershy) finds Parasprites endearing until realizing the harm they cause and even then, still consider them cute as far as appearance goes.
    • Reinforced in the toy-line. Two Rarity toys and one Fluttershy toy are accompanied by butterflies, one Rainbow Dash toy is accompanied by a dragonfly and one Applejack toy is accompanied by a ladybug.

Friend to Bugs means that you're especially into bugs, not that you once liked some particular bugs everypony likes. And I don't think tropes only in the toy line go here (though I wouldn't object to that side mention if there was reason to mention Friend to Bugs based on the show first).

  • Butt-Monkey: Every single one of them has at least one or two episodes practically devoted to their pain and humiliation, usually when it's their Day In The Limelight.

Okay, I'm seeing a pattern here. Tropes that are about something happening always are being applied to characters because it happened in a couple of episodes.

Twilight:

Where do I even start? How about the fact that she's a nerd, not the popular kid, just as it says here? No. Etc.

Actually that's a subversion or nothing at all to do with the trope — that time, for all we saw, she knew perfectly well what she was talking about. There were no curses. And she'd be the one who knows that Magic A Is Magic A and would be in a position to voice an opinion on it.

Besides, Arbitrary Skepticism is about denying the fantastic explanation for something odd you're seeing, whereas when Rainbow Dash called her out on it, they were only talking about curses.

Calling Spike a Pintsized Powerhouse and Pinkie Pie a Genius Bruiser... well, suggests the editors who put those in didn't read either article. At all. Oh, and Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass for Pinkie Pie is wrong, too. If someone would ask why, go read those tropes first, and you shouldn't need to ask any more. Also make sure not to confuse Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass (whose name is confusing, I admit that) with regular Let's Get Dangerous!.

I disagree with the change from Tomboy to The Lad-ette. The Lad-ette is highly focused on drinking and sex, neither of which is a factor in MLP:FIM. I don't want to go back and revert-war this, but I think it needs to be hashed out.

As currently written, Tomboy is focused on prepubescent girls who exhibit boyish behavior, and The Lad-ette is the adult (post-pubescent) version of the same idea. There is no requirement for The Lad-ette to include sex and/or drinking (many of the examples on that page feature neither), merely that the character is a female who acts in a stereotypical frat-boy manner.

Scootaloo would be a Tomboy; Rainbow Dash and Applejack would be Ladettes.

"No requirement", huh.

"She likes sports, beer, cars, swearing, fighting and sex. She is crude, rude, often hygienically challenged and cheerfully ignorant and aggressive." - The Lad-ette

Rainbow Dash loves sports, and let's out what may be a pony profanity on occasion, but that's it. The Lad-ette has many qualities which she just doesn't have, while Tomboy just fits more.

rjung Since: Jan, 2015

No, that's just part of the color for the trope description of The Lad-ette — if we were to stick to such a strict interpretation, three-quarters of the examples wouldn't fit because they come from backgrounds that don't have cars to begin with. Again, the trope description as a whole is simply an adult female with the rambunctious personality and interests of a "frat boy", which fits both Applejack and Rainbow Dash very well (especially RD).

Red Sonija is a Ladette despite not having sex. Felina Feral from SWAT Kats, Rita Torres from Exo Squad, June from Ka Blam, Sam Puckett from iCarly, Alex Russo from Wizards Of Waverly Place, Kiina from Bionicle, and Kazooie from Banjo Kazooie are Ladettes despite not having beer nor sex. Excluding AJ and RD simply on a very strict reading of the trope description seems completely arbitrary to me.

As the trope summarizes: "In short, she is a young woman with the personality of a frat boy."

Whilst I agree that whether or not Applejack is The Lad-ette is ambiguous, seeing as though she isn't particulary wild and rambunctious, I do beleive that Rainbow Dash definately does qualify as the The Lad-ette, at least by the standards for this setting.

The fact is, the mane cast are young adults. They're beyond childhood.

Applejack is closer to The Lad-ette than Tomboy, if nothing else. And although she acts as a Team Mom most of the time, she doesn't shy away from a good brawl if necessary — "Dragonshy" and "A Dog and Pony Show" come to mind. AJ's Laddette-style behavior is also what annoys Rarity in "Look Before You Sleep".

i don't think Rainbow fit the ladette trope...tomboy absolutely, but she allows Rarity to make her over with little complaining that we saw...and what we did see consisted of being bored with the length of time the makeover took rather than the girliness of it. Her home is quite pretty and girly for something we can assume was made by her, and Rarity's dress style for her is a lot more feminine than what she picked for Applejack. I think Applejack, with her complete aversion to all things frou frou fits the ladette trope more...tho I really don't think it applies well to either of them.

And on the quick topic of rainbow's house and the fact that it has appeared differently in several episodes...has it occurred to anyone esle that she reshapes it whenever she gets bored with the design...considering it's made of clouds? Given her, pun intended, flightiness, I could see her easily wanting something new with her home

She manages to get him on his back and rub either his chest or his belly for great adorability—he'd turned into a big softie with three heads as she coos, "Who's a good boy?" I don't get why people INSIST on listing Rarity as a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. Sure, she isn't ALWAYS nice, but she's nice above all else, whereas characters under said trope are characters that seem like jerks at first, but are really nice DEEP DOWN. Think Dash, for example. SHE plays it completely straight. But Rarity does not. Her heart of gold is obvious, as opposed to someone like Dash. In fact, Rarity's almost the complete opposite, as in, she's nice, but she sometimes makes mistakes, even though she doesn't want to seem mean. She's the Element of Generousity for a reason, y'know, and she's not perfect. Honestly, if Rarity is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, then why don't we list everypony as one?

I seem to notice that Fluttershy has become (somewhat) more assertive and willing to actually get physical, as per season 2. Of note: 1. Her dragging and having an extra burst of speed while chasing corrupted RD (Return of Harmony 2). 2. The in/famous bear wrestling scene (Lesson Zero). 3. Refusing visitor by shouting loudly, and engaged in an offscreen tussle with Twilight (Luna Eclipsed). 4. Her dragging Rainbow Dash to come to her house (May the Best Pet Win). 5. Rainbow Dash actually threw a cake to her face (compare her fragility to pranks in Griffon the Brush-Off), and she actually joined the others in throwing cake back at Rainbow Dash.

Dash's personality is a far better fit for The Big Guy, and she's clearly the powerhouse of the group, mostly due to her flying ability. But Rarity is the only one who has shown ANY interest in boys and, in Bird in the Hoof, Rainbow Dash sees Fluttershy and Twilight running, immediately assumes they are racing, and asks if she "can play". Cut this:

In a game of Pin the Tail on the Pony, not only does Pinkie Pie pin the tail in the wrong place, she pins her own tail to the pony and the game's tail to her own behind.
Because it's not really an example of Achievements in Ignorance, as Pinkie only did that in a fantasy sequence. It never really happened in the world of the show. Actually, I'm considering cutting the trope as a whole, because it's not clear that the reason Pinkie can do the things she does is because she doesn't know they should be impossible. Just because a character can do something that seems like it should be impossible does automatically qualify for this trope; they have to be able to do it precisely because they do not know that it's impossible.

Edited to add that I decided to cut this:

* Achievements in Ignorance: Pinkie Pie is the pony incarnate of this trope. She's almost always doing things that tear apart the laws of physics as random sight gags when she's overly excited.
Because this is an improper use of the trope. Achievements in Ignorance is when a character does something because he didn't know that it was impossible. There's no evidence that Pinkie's strange abilities have anything to do with the fact that she doesn't know that what she's doing is supposed to be impossible.
