Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous Post
Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

For what it's worth that whole page plus the entry was written by a ~Sunflorazumarill. I am calling them here.

Still, burn it like all holy hell now and keep burning it until they come down here. It sounds a lot like bitching that Ghetsis doesn't count (I am not being hyperbolic when I say he is the biggest reason for why we have the never again list).

Ah. Still, whoever added this entry should've gone to us first. He sounds like a Ron the Death Eater character to me, and even if this version counts, that entry needs a serious makeover.

I've burned the example and added a warning. I'll keep an eye on the page in case anyone ignores the warning and just go straight to the mods if that happens.

EDIT: Okay, I have two different trains of thought at the moment that I'll just share here.

First, we've talked about, kicked around and basically agreed that Complete Monster should be removed from the YMMV and made a proper trope since this thread has stripped the subjectivity from the trope. The obstacle the last time this came about was that people weren't satisfied we had cleaned up the trope enough, I'm wondering if that's still true. Are there any main subpages we haven't cleaned up yet? If we think it's presentable enough we can finally shut up anyone who goes "it's YMMV you jerks" and keep it

Second, since Danganronpa 2 is out in little over a month and I have access to a anime streaming site that is currently free I'm planning to watch the anime (Attack on Titan has got me over any hangups about watching subtitled animes) and see if Anime!Junko really is different enough to qualify while we disqualified her game counterpart.

Does being a Well-Intentioned Extremist (with a point, not completely out of his mind, except that he'd use a tacnuke against a termite infestation) count as an automatic disqualifier?

If so, I'll call for striking Admiral Akainu from One Piece. (Disclaimer: Haven't read the manga and have no axe to grind, it just seems incongruous.)

Well-Intentioned Extremist is an auto-disqualifier, yes. You need more than that to remove One Piece's Akainu because this thread has found his behaviour and motives more consistent with Knight Templar (which is not exclusive with Complete Monster).

Best fix that. Here're some writeups:

Tessai from Ninja Scroll as we already have his boss

  • Tessai is, hands down, the most violent, brutal and nasty of the Eight Devils of Kimon. A hulking brute of a man with skin he can harden into rock, Tessai is introduced butchering a group of shinobi who are investigating the village he and his seven comrades poisoned to manufacture rumors of a plague. The leader, Hanza, is caught by Tessi and killed sadistically as Tessai slowly rips his arms off with his bare hands before drinking the blood from the severed arms. Leaving only the sole woman of the group alive, Tessai takes her to his home and attemptsto rapeher, informing her not to struggle because "he wouldn't mind raping a dead girl."when Kagero is rescued by Jubei Kibigami, a humiliated Tessai later makes it a point to hunt down Jubei and attempt to beat him to death in retribution.

  • Harald Jaekelsson from the Thor Miniseries Vikings embodies the worst of all negative stereotypes of vikings. In 1003 AD, Harald leads his men to rape and slaughter all inhabitants of a village before setting sail for the new world. Cursed by a wise man to sail for a thousand years, Harald arrives at New York as a nigh-invincible zombie with his men. Setting about to slaughter, pillage and rape all they find, Harald and his comrades turn New York into a near death camp with Harald selecting the seat of his new throne built of human bones at the Empire State Building. When he faces Thor, Harald tries to humiliate the God and taunts him to go die a coward's death before casting him into the Hudson River. With only a brief appearance, Haralad marks himself as one of the most truly vile beings the God of Thunder has ever faced.

  • Dark Beast, the Evil Counterpart of the good-hearted Hank McCoy of the X-men, is a Mad Scientist who hails from the Age of Apocalypse. Initially the Bastard Understudy of Mr. Sinister, Dark Beast earned a reputation as a sadistic monster in Apocalypse's concentration camps for his cruel experiments which tortured and killed many, giving him the nickname of 'Beast' which he liked enough to mutate himself to better fit the moniker. When Dark Beast was brought to the X-men's world he set about killing everyone the good Beast cared for that he could and continued his monstrous experiments on innocents. With his most heinous actions being to create a machine that fed off Hank's lifeforce while keeping him in unspeakable agony, in addition to his experiments on children, Dark Beast eventually attempted to foster a war between the X-men and SHIELD. When exposed and dying from experimenting on himself, Dark Beast's final actions were to initiate a bomb to take the X-men with him simply out of spite.

Hitman

  • Tom Dawson, father of The Hero Tommy Monaghan, is a simple Irish businessman who made a name for himself via a series of land deals. Also a vicious egomaniac, Dawson was the frequent client of the local prostitute named Katie. The first time they met, Dawson informed her he knew her trick to shame her hypocritical clients who persecuted her: naming her children after them. Dawson warned her never to try that with him. When Katie fell pregnant, Dawson heard she was considering to name the baby 'Tommy,' he burned down her house with her infant daughter and two young twin sons still inside. Katie was forced to leave her daughter Frances at an orphanage to save her life and fled to America where Dawson found her and butchered her with a knife. Assuming the baby died in the cold, Dawson went back to Ireland until 30 years later when Frances found Tommy and brought him to her old home. Dawson attempted to have Tommy killed and brutally murdered Frances the same way as he had her mother. When Tommy confronted Dawson, Dawson showed no remorse, snarling that Tommy had no right to call him his father and that he and Katie were nothing but gutter trash preying on 'respectable men' like himself. After Tommy said that Katie had simply recognized Dawson as a bully and coward and stood up to him the one way she knew how, Dawson's only response was "to hell with her," finally prompting Tommy to shoot him.
  • Truman, an assuming, mild-mannered little CIA agent who is out to destroy metahumans makes his career on blackmail and murder, but it's not until the final arc where he shows the darkness inside himself. Truman has human beings injected with a special metahuman formula to create a personal army of metahumans but while the formula works, it steals the minds from its subjects. Tommy becomes aware of this when he rescues a young woman who had been a witness Truman had tried to silence by unleashing one of the monsters on her without care for collateral damage. When he realizes the creatures still retain their human minds and are locked in a corner of their heads, incapable of stopping their actions, Truman orders them to be set loose on one another with the resulting carnage filmed for his amusement.

No, fortunately, but he certainly tried to, I can tell you that. Fortunately Jade Green strangled him before he could do so, and he ended up dead. Don't start blowing your nose into tissues because you do not have to.

Fortunately, Judith and Mrs. Hasting were saved when the fire was put out.

Personally I don't think he cared about the people he regularly came to visit and was just leeching off of them, wouldn't you say?

  • Thor: Vikings: This Garth Ennis miniseries, from the MAX imprint, features the sadistic, psychotic Harald Jaekelsson, who embodies the worst stereotypes of Vikings. Yeah, solid [tup] for both. If Tom had JUST killed her, then he MIGHT not count, but killing her kids (does he know they're in the house?) erases any doubt.
And Truman...shudder. Why does he want to create Metahumans if he wants to destroy them though?

@Shaoken From what I can tell, there seems to be 3 main subpages that still need cleanup: Anime & Manga (sandbox here), Fan Works (sandbox here), and then for Live-Action TV, we still need to deal with the remaining entries on the sandbox.

I would think that that would be the time for such a change, yes. In TRS preferably so that it gets more input than the community of this thread.

ACW: Truman wants metahumans he can control. As for Tom Dawson, he intended to kill all of the Monaghans, kids included. When he has Frances thirty years later, he even gloats he finally has "the last of the bastards" and Katie left Frances as to save her from Dawson as she knew Dawson'd come for her first

Gonna give ayes.

One correction to Truman: He didn't sic one of the zombies on the witness. He was trying to have her killed, but because she saw said monster. Not much better as he's trying like hell to have a pregnant woman murdered.

Witchoftheabsolute: Regarding Valter, we cut him as he never does too much to stand out overmuch. The other problem is Valter specifically became so vile after he found a magic lance that did things to his mental state. That kind of casts his agency into question.

If we have agreed that Kakuzawa from the Elfen Lied series counts for this trope, here's a writeup on him.

  • Kakuzawa was the head of the research facility that experimented on the Diclonii. Kakuzawa was defined by his extreme hatred of humanity, and his wishing to become a god. In order for this to happen, he had planned on mating with Lucy and having offspring through her. He would then use said offspring to wipe out the entire human race, and he would ultimately recreate the world in his own image, thus becoming a god. It's also shown that he commits several vile acts on his fellow man and is extremely callous to the suffering that he throws onto them. He's also shown as being a terrible parent to his children. He was shown expressing apathy over the death of his eldest son, and he also sees nothing wrong with using his children to extend his goals. He arguably shows affection for his daughter, Anna, but it's ultimately shown that he views her as an experiment and nothing more.
