Ambiguous Name: Kitsune

To-do list:

Original post

I would like to draft a proposal to rename Kitsune to Nine-Tailed Fox (which it is presently a redirect for), Asian Fox Spirit, or something similar if neither of those proposals work.

Japan isn't the only country to have myths, legends, and stories featuring multi-tailed fox-spirits, nor is it the country in which multi-tailed fox-spirits originated. And while Japan may have been — and still be — the most-prominent source of Western-imported media featuring fox-spirits over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries, more and more Korean and especially Chinese and Chinese-themed works featuring multi-tailed fox-spirits have been coming out over the last few decades — i.e. Painted Skin, Jiang Ziya, White Snake (2019).

Foremost among these is the ability to assume a human form. All right, I've cleared the examples in Fantastic Foxes, I believe.

Interestingly, many of the examples were already present in the "Asian Fox Spirit" page!

(In some cases I elected to copy some or all of the text from Fantastic Foxes, in particular where I thought it better than the text already present in Asian Fox Spirit.)

There were a few examples that I was uncertain of—for example, the entry for Book of Imaginary Beings. The description notes the foxes in question as being Chinese—but doesn't seem to mention the traits of a nine-tailed fox, save for longevity.

This has left Fantastic Foxes somewhat short on examples.

On which note, should empty folders be left in place, or deleted?

And finally, I note that the Asian Fox Spirit page, in the examples under "Mythology And Religion", has what appear to be copy-pasted text from Wikipedia. Am I correct in thinking that that's not okay?

So how's this wick clean going? Has it stalled or is it still being worked through?

I realize it's not on the Cleaning Projects page, so it was out of sight, out of mind for me. I might add it tomorrow morning when I wake up! Seems like a pretty straightforward to-do list.

I don't if anyone is actively working on this but I did try to work on some of the wicks. I have been using potholes for Kitsune mentions because I think it's awkward to use Asian Fox Spirit instead of Kitsune in most instances.

What do I do for the Music.Baby Metal entry? It seems like kitsune is their whole motif so it has a ton of stuff under its entry. Do I pothole AFS and keep the title of Kitsune?

I don't think that's necessary and we aren't supposed to use potholes in trope lists like that (as per "Do Not Alter or Pothole the Trope Name" guideline under How to Write an Example). Just move it to Asian Fox Spirit. I don't think that that will cause confusion.

Ah, sorry—for my part I had stalled in the wick-cleaning, having had somewhat-limited energy of late, which I've been directing elsewhere. I'd been meaning to do more, however.

That said, I would not object to leaving this to the wick-cleaning projects, if it's taken there.

As to references to kitsune, it might be worth noting that "Kitsune" redirects to "Asian Fox Spirit" now. I'm not sure of what our actual rules are, but can mentions like the one in "BabyMetal", above, not thus simply remain as "Kitsune"?

We should always use the tropes main title in work example lists (gender redirects are the exception though.

Since this is still in the Trope repair shop I feel safe asking this question.

I haven't even been on here for a year and I'd like to get something cleared up. The current idea is that all Asian fantastic foxes, especially if they're human morphs will become "Asian Fox Spirit", correct? What if they're specifically mentioned by their "species" name be it the Korean or Japanese version in the work? Do I have to default to the new trope name or use the original more accurate one?

I seem to remember the Korean version showing up in Lovecraft County, would I put in the trope under "Kumiho" or just have it in this new trope for simplicity?

Thanks in advance for answering my question, know it's in the frustrating minutia of tropper work.

On work example lists, you should use Asian Fox Spirit, but for direct mentions of the creature, you can pothole Asian Fox Spirit to Kitsune/Gumiho/Huli-jing so that the sentence flows naturally.

OK, the dewicking's done (again mostly not by me) but I did remove or cutlist the remaining sandboxes (inc. Sandbox.Asian Fox Spirit since it was merged into the description a while ago). I was literally about to close this thread before remembering to ask if there was something else that needed doing — Fantastic Foxes doesn't need to be cleaned up here, right?

Fantastic Foxes wick check for posterity

Fantastic Foxes came up in the TRS discussion for Kitsune as a trope that both overlaps and may cover some of the concepts Kitsune is meant to cover. This check is to see how Fantastic Foxes is used for comparison sake.

Wicks: 51/50

    open/close all folders

Non-East-Asian, and not like East-Asian foxes
  1. Characters.Elena Of Avalor Team Avalor: Fantastic Foxes: A magical talking trickster fox.
  2. The Arts of Dark and Light: Fantastic Foxes: Or one, at least: a mysterious red fox that speaks with human words. It turns out to really be a demon.

Non-East Asian, but similar to them

    East-Asian
  1. Characters.Beware Of Chicken: Kitsune: Nezan is one of the Chinese variation, known as a Huli Jing. See Fantastic Foxes for more detail. Not only is it literally a Kitsune example, but there's no Fantastic Foxes wick to be found.
  2. The Element of Time: Fantastic Foxes: Kurama the 9-tailed fox fits the Kitsune version of this trope. There is also Zenko the rinnegan fox summon Naruto creates to use for scouting purposes.
  3. Horny Devils:SCP-953, a Korean nine-tailed fox is entirely malevolent. She seduces a member of the SCP team sent to capture her, then rips off his testicles and shows them to him. Even the Sole Survivor of the team is implied to have an unhealthy fascination with her, and you have to keep away the Furry Fandom as well.
  4. Literal Maneater: Speaking of Fantastic Foxes, the Korean Gumiho is, unlike the Japanese Kitsune, traditionally depicted as a vicious man-eating fox that uses its guise of a beautiful human maiden to get men alone so it can feast on their livers or hearts. The Chinese Huli Jing is also sometimes portrayed this way, but feeds on spiritual energy rather than flesh.
  5. Dragon Ball Multiversal Characters: Fantastic Foxes: An anthropomorphic tall slender fox god with multiple tails.
  6. Love, Death & Robots: "Good Hunting": Fantastic Foxes: Huli jing, a Chinese fox spirit similar to Kitsune, alleged to feed on the yang of men. In this case they hear the voices of men obsessed by their beauty, which spirit hunters mistake for bewitching them. There are also two potholes on the page that both refer to this.
  7. Analogue: A Hate Story: * Little Bit Beastly: *Mute has some aspects, such as her bow resembling fox ears and her teeth being slightly fanged. As noted on the page, a gumiho - fox magicians who used to be depicted as either benevolent or amoral - is frequently associated with becoming human. Thus, the opposite of Hyun-ae, who became an AI. Potholes "gumiho" to "Fantastic Foxes"
  8. Elsword Playable Characters 1: Fantastic Fox: Eun (Korean for "silver"), the fox spirit that resides within Ara's hairpin. More precisely, a gumiho (its Korean equivalent).
  9. Popular with Furries * Naruto:
    • Kurama the nine-tailed fox. Being a giant monster sized fox, he is popular with furry macro fans. I'm presuming from the source, the name, and the indicated number of tails that this character fits here.
  10. Anime & Manga: Laon is a manhwa about a Gumiho (Korean version of Fantastic Foxes) who is sent to earth as punishment and has to seek out its missing tails. In the process lots of people die, demons attempt to invade our world, and a poor young man who lost his true love long ago and yet can't remember how or why gets mixed up in the meddling. The page only has tropes and description up to about the third volume at best, and since all six have been localized in a number of countries by now it definitely deserves more attention than it's been getting, if only because it's pretty informative about certain Korean myths.
  11. The Gu Family Book: Complete Monster: Jo Kwan Woong is an ambitious nobleman who destroys a man who was his friend and sends the man’s daughter to be turned into a state gisaeng, or prostitute. He then attempts to rape her himself, stating that defiling her would be no fun if she didn't struggle, before discovering she has escaped. In retribution, he executes her brother and later engineers her betrayal of her Kumiho husband Wol-Ryung. 20 years later, Kwan Woong has a number of people in high level positions purged and murdered, and conducts a series of further murders, even killing the goodhearted Lord Park, brainwashing Park's son that it was his foster brother and raping Park's daughter. When Wol-Ryung returns as an amnesiac demon, Kwan Woong still comes off as the worse of the two by manipulating him for his own purposes. Even at the end, Kwan Woong confesses his actions were all to alleviate the tedium of life, with no remorse for his evil deeds.
  12. DEATH BATTLE! (Season Four): Fantastic Foxes: Again, Renamon is based on a Kitsune.
  13. Historical Fantasy: The Fox Sister is set in Seoul, Korea, of 1968, adding Fantastic Foxes to the otherwise realistic setting.
  14. The Bridge: Complete Monster:
    • Jeog, aka "Beautiful Terror", is a monstrous, bloodthirsty Gumiho. Viewing love as something she can take by force by eating someone's heart, Jeog pretended to be a Kirin doe and was adopted into the Cho Family, most of whose members she butchered before being sealed away, only to escape years later to finish the job. She then killed Cho Yon, Ki Seong's betrothed, and attempted to feed her soup made from his remains while trying to murder her as well. Chasing her victim onto a ship, Jeog slaughters the entire crew. Finally tracking Seong down, Jeog attempts to kill her honorary niece Gentle Leaf several times, and attempts to rip out her new love Anguirus's heart and liver while disguised as her. While kept at bay by wards, Jeog tries to convince Seong to run to her death by making it appear she's holding Gentle Leaf hostage. During the final battle, Jeog paralyzes Ki Seong so she can be Forced to Watch the Gumiho kill Anguirus. Despite not being a kaiju herself, Jeog proves more monstrous than many of them.
  15. Cookie Run: Cookie Run S Rank CookiesRare: ... Ninetales/Kumiho Cookie, ... Edited down to the relevant section, as the full entry is a rather long list.
  17. Kemono Heroes: Fantastic Foxes: Fudemaru, whose special Voluntary Shapeshifting ability is common among foxes in Asian folklore.

    Foxes as a motif
  1. To Be A Miraculous Master Recurring Rivals: Fantastic Foxes: Lila's team, according to [This example contains a TRIVIA entry. It should be moved to the TRIVIA tab.] Word of God (via the author's bio), is based around this. She particularly owns a Ninetales and a Zoroark.
  2. Codex Alera Other Races: * Animal Motifs: The Marat tribes are each based around a certain animal, and the animal's nature is typically reflected in the tribals' demeanor. The known tribal animals are horses (fast, deceptively dangerous, hard-working, and stoic), wolves (merciless, cold, savage, and excellent at teamwork), herdbane (treacherous, quick-witted, flighty, impulsive, and stubborn), gargants (honorable, wise, slow to act but absolutely devastating and near-impossible to counter), and lions (though the latter never appear in the series). There was formerly a Fox Tribe, but the Wolf and Herdbane Tribes wiped them out several years prior to the start of the series.
  3. Henshin Heroes: * Animal Motifs: One of the primary elements of the Greeed and OOO. With three animal Medals at a time, OOO's can access a wide range of powers. default mode is color:red:Hawk-color:gold:Tiger-color:green:Grasshopper; color:red:Taka-color:gold:Tora-color:green:Batta in Japanese, "color:red:Tacolor:gold:Tocolor:green:Ba" for short. Overlaps with Mix-and-Match Critters.
    • color:0D4804:Gurinu, the forest Enviii, is designed to look like a deer with his other keys being An Owl and a Red Fox

    Foxes that transform
  1. Literature.Satyrday: Vera, the snow fox, has magical powers, lived for many years, and can transform herself into a nymph and a mermaid (albeit only for a short while)
  2. Hungarian Folk Tales: Fantastic Foxes: In "The Fox Princess", the protagonist is helped by a shapeshifting fox.
  3. Exalted: Exalted of Creation: Fantastic Foxes: Her spirit shape.
  4. SCP Foundation: SCPs 3000 to 3999: Fantastic Foxes: Everyone who goes into the lookout encounter hostile and apparently shapeshifting fox creatures instead of the parasites from the original.

    Fox-people
  1. Gems of War: Fantastic Foxes: She's a fox-woman belonging to the Wargare race.
  2. Mystara: Fantastic Foxes: In 2nd edition, Dragon #237 introduced no fewer than three fox-based lupin subraces: the druidic Foxfolk, the flamboyant swashbuckling Renardois Folk, and the desert-dwelling, preternaturally lucky Fennecs.

  1. VideoGame.TRI Of Friendship And Madness: Following the guidance of a mysterious temple monk, the player is tasked with entering the Odd Gods' World in hopes of finding where one of the missing fox deities of this realm disappeared off to.

Pantheon.Power Archetypes: Portfolio: Fantastic Foxes, Cunning Like a Fox, Ms. Fanservice, Creates Fox Fire, Charms EVERYONE and ANYONE, Wanting to Be Human by Using Her Beauty to Kill Others for Their Essense Until She Gained Human Morality Through Her Killings and Sought Alternative Means to Gain Humanity, Has Whisker-life Marks and Fox Ears and Tails
  3. Too Bleak, Stopped Caring/Film: * A version of Zootopia that got pretty far into production, with many key scenes already entering rough animation, was discarded due to this reaction from test audiences. This incarnation of the film had Con Man Nick Wilde as the primary protagonist, and Zootopia was filled to the brim with open anti-predator prejudice, as exemplified by laws requiring all predators to wear shock collars that go off whenever they get too excited for any reason. Moments such as "the taming party" scene, combined with an already cynical point-of-view character, made the film's setting so dark that viewers wanted Nick to escape this awful police state rather than try and fix it. The team reworked the story to focus on deuteragonist Judy Hopps instead, backtracking to when that character was still a Wide-Eyed Idealist new to the police force, and the rest of the story and setting quickly followed suit to the point that the dystopian world present in the early versions of the film now come across more as the Bad Future the final film's villain is aiming for.
  4. League Of Legends: Si-Sy: * Ms. Fanservice: Although her outfits aren't especially revealing (and several of them are downright conservative) her spectacular breasts have elevated her incredibly high in the community's esteem. She's truly a beautiful character and is considered to be comfortably within the top 5 most desirable characters in the game (in fact, in a forum poll from 2012 she ranked in second place, although still a long way behind first-place winner Ahri). Merely a pothole, alas.
  5. Occult Detective: Grimm. Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt of the Portland Police Bureau learns he is descended from a line of "guardians" known as "Grimms", charged with keeping the balance between humanity and the mythological creatures of the world, called Wesen.
    • It's worth noting that Nick is actually fairly unique in this regard. It's all but stated that most Grimm tend to act as the occult hunters rather than detectives, who'd gladly kill any Wesen, regardless of whether they've done anything to warrant it, whereas Nick only goes after Wesen who commit crimes and leaving the peaceful ones like Monroe and Rosalee alone. Understandably, this throws a lot of Wesen for a loop when they meet him.

  1. WesternAnimation. The Canterbury Tales: In "The Nun's Priest's Tale" a fox tricks Chanticleer the rooster into letting his guard down by praising Chanticleer's singing ability.
  2. Lumberjanes: Fantastic Foxes:
    • Apollo sics multiple three-eyed foxes on the group. The foxes collapse into dust when defeated.
    • In Issue 40 a borderline-malevolent fox-spirit shows up seeking revenge on the Bearwoman.
  3. Adaptational Styles: * After her one of her journey in the Subhouse of Mesozoic Beasts and hearing about a goddess of magical foxes, a curious crystal decided to go visit Renamon in the nearby House of Canines. The two quickly befriended one another and sometimes talks about how the magic in their normally high-tech universes differ. However, her enticing appearance ended up earning the attention of a much more nefarious member of the House in the form of Reynard the Fox. The salacious trickster, after hearing of the vixen's tumultuous relationship with Fox, approached her and tried to get in her good grace by telling the tale of how he tricked the pilot out of his first divine title. While initially rather flattered by the male fox's courteous words, Krystal quickly changed her tune upon learning more about him and the atrocities he committed back in his world. And so, she has sworn that she would freeze if he ever got in her sight again, much to his disappointment. Appears to refer to magical foxes in a very broad sense.
  4. Empress Theresa: Fantastic Foxes: A fox is the host for the magical alien for many years until Theresa is 10 years old. The implication — via Boutin himself suggesting that HAL is pure intellect — is that foxes are magically and intellectually proficient.
  5. Canine Companion: It's not limited to dogs; a Noble Wolf or a Fantastic Fox can count as one if they accompany their owner.
  6. Tropes S to Z: Summon Magic:
    • While many tomes conjure elements for the user to strike their foe, all of the Norse color prefix tomes summon ethereal objects or animals for the user to attack the enemy, which also have some specific effects tied to them as well:
      • -fox: Summons a fox to leap upon the enemy. If the user initiates combat, inflict -4 Atk/Spd/Def/Res on the target during combat.

    ZCE
  1. Characters.Grimm Main: His last name is Renard, a form of Reynard. Ring any bells?
  2. Manga.Cat Paradise: Tsukumoisshu. He doesn't quite look like one, though, being physically closer to a giant aardvark with long hair, pointy teeth, and sharp claw. His odd appearance is even lampshaded in his first encounter with the student council.
Tsukasa: More importantly, is that thing really a fox?
  3. Manhwa.Laon: Laon
  4. Myth.Korean Mythology: Samguk Yusa includes many tales of foxes, dragons and tigers taking human form. One Silla story involves a man named Kim Hyun falling in love with a cute girl (actually a female tiger) he met at the festival. However, her three brothers had killed too many humans that Heaven decided to punish them, but the girl said that she would instead become a scapegoat, and told Kim Hyun to kill her the next day, saying: "If I have to die, then let me be killed by the man who loves me" . Kim Hyun had no choice but to do it (in tears), and after getting the reward from the King for killing a Tiger, used it to build a Temple (named Howeonsa, meaning 'Temple of the Tigers wish') in memory of his love.
  5. OhCrap.Webcomics: The Fox Sister: When the Kumiho runs into Soot Bull.
  6. VideoGame.A Tale Of Two Kingdoms: The Pooka.I happen to be familiar with this work. The Pooka, as I recall, is one of the Fairy Folk in the Celtic/Brittanic style, and possessed of fox-ears and a fox-tail. She's a playful trickster, primarily.
  7. True Tail: Fantastic Foxes: Viktor the Thief is a fox. "Foxes exist"
  8. To Be A Miraculous Master Lumiose Trainer Academy Friends Classmates: Fantastic Foxes: Trixx, under Alya's ownership.
  9. Class Clash: The Never-ending Legend: Fantastic Foxes For what it's worth, I note that apparently the character described is of a race called "vulpine".
  10. Namco × Capcom: Fantastic Foxes: Xiaomu (Chinese) and Saya (Japanese). And they are foxy indeed.
  11. Animalistic Abomination: The SCP Foundation has contained a number of these, some of the most notable being SCP-1055, SCP-682, SCP-334 and SCP-953. Almost everything with the "animal" tag qualifies as one of these.
  12. True Tail: Fantastic Foxes

Crown Description:

Consensus was to rename Kitsune because it covers Asian fox spirits other than the Japanese kitsune. What should its new name be?
