Five-Man Band has been receiving a lot of misuse. As was concluded in this TRS thread, it needs a massive cleanup. There are over 30 subpages and almost 3500 wicks to be gone through. This thread is for organizing the cleanup effort and discussing any and all examples to be added and cut.
What is correct use of the trope?
- The characters must be part of a team, that is, a team dynamic must exist between members of the band.
- There must be exactly 5 team members
Format for examples
In an effort to cut down on misuse as well as get rid of all the Zero Context Examples, we are trying to shift all examples to the following format. If you are familiar with a current work and can do a writeup for it, please do so and post it here.
The sandbox for sorting examples is here.
Completed
Subpages:
- Other (Moved and redirected to a Just for Fun page, as that is what is was acting as.)
Still needs work
Wicks (Related To page):
- B-V
I will keep this post updated with the progress made, and any other needed information.

I've removed the following from the Five Bad Band trope, and told people to come here before adding any RWBY examples in future. I'm sure this has been discussed and removed in the past, and with the characters in different roles, too (Cinder usually gets put into The Dragon and Hazel into The Brute).
There's also Greater-Scope Villain misuse going on here. Salem has never been a GSV as she has directly controlled the plot and villainous machinations from the beginning. Cinder's The Heavy to a Non-Action Big Bad (and the first three volumes were basically a case of The Man Behind the Man).
Edited to add this paragraph: I've gone through the Five Bad Band's Web Original history page, and I removed this a year ago after a discussion in this thread, and left an edit reason telling people that it was the clean-up thread decision. Given this, is it okay if I add a comment-out note to the page telling people not to add the RWBY work, and to instead come here and discuss it?
- Two in RWBY
- Salem's Faction
- The Big Bad: Salem
- The Dragon: Hazel Rainart (with some shades of The Dark Chick and The Brute)
- The Evil Genius: Dr. Arthur Watts (with some shades of The Dragon)
- The Brute: Tyrian Callows
- The Dark Chick: Cinder Fall
- Cinder's Group
- The Big Bad: Cinder Fall
- The Dragon: Roman Torchwick
- The Evil Genius: Emerald Sustrai
- The Brute: Mercury Black
- The Dark Chick: Neopolitan
- Greater-Scope Villain: Salem
- Salem's Faction

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. From Dracula:
- Five-Man Band
- The Hero: Jonathan Harker (the first to encounter Dracula and instigator of the hunt)
- The Lancer: Arthur, Lord Godalming (Has a good reason to seek revenge and is initially the most sceptical)
- The Big Guy: Quincey Morris (provides the firepower)
- The Smart Guy: Dr. John Seward
- The Chick: Mina Harker (has to deal with the prejudice of the times)
- The Mentor: Van Helsing (the experienced vampire hunter who trains the others in the art of slaying the Un Dead)
I haven't read the book in its entirety, so I can't say how well the characters fit the tropes, but it has The Hero instead of The Leader, there are six members with one in a non-FMB role, the entry for The Smart Guy is a ZCE, the entry for The Chick looks like a shoehorn, and I'm not sure if something this old would use the trope in the first place.

Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!I say, "remove it" for all the reasons you listed.
It's also listed on the Literature subpage of Five-Man Band, which is locked. The locked subpages have a lot of clearly shoehorned examples that can't be removed.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project! If you just want to remove that example, you can go to the locked pages request thread, citing this thread. If you want to do a more extensive cleanup, you can make a sandbox, check it via this thread, and then take it to the locked pages request thread once we have agreement.
eta: I've read the book several times, and also endorse the removal of that example.

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.I'l pull it from the page and bring it up in the locked pages thread.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project! Not sure if this has been addressed earlier up, but I wanted to point out that the format for Five-Man Band examples established in Post 1 is in direct violation of Example Indentation in Trope Lists guidelines.
In fact, that page uses a Five-Man Band example that is the direct opposite of what is suggested here.
If we're sticking with the Post 1 format, someone with proper powers should change that Administrivia page.
"It's just a show; I should really just relax"I think FMB should be a kind of Grandfather Clause exception to the indentation thing. It's never been widely enforced when it comes to this trope in particular.
Anyways, What about Saints Row IV Radio Stations?
edited 4th Mar '18 9:55:22 AM by NiceGirl23
What do you mean by that?
Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheonIn case you were serious, and not merely posting in the wrong thread: radio stations do not even fall under the supertrope The Team, and thus cannot qualify here.
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Oh, so that's why the Radio station are not The Team.
I don't follow competitive CS:GO, but I noticed that Counter-Strike lists various pro teams as Five Man Bands. I'm not sure if real-life teams are allowed for this trope, or if the members actually fit their roles (as I said, I don't know much about the game), but either way none of them have a woman as The Chick so they don't qualify.
Agreed. Regardless of how well the others fit, if the fifth one doesn't then the whole thing doesn't count.
I found this on Film. The Wizard Of Oz, and I'm removing it for having only four members plus a pet.
- Five-Man Band:
- The Leader/The Chick: Dorothy the one who starts the journey and the only girl.
- The Smart Guy: Scare Crow he has clever ideas.
- The Big Guy: Lion is largest and probably the strongest being a lion.
- The Heart: Tinman who cares deeply.
- Team Pet: Toto.
I still wonder why Five-Man Band is misused and shoehorned as much as it is...
But still, great. Check if the example is on the Film subpage, since it should't be there either.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project! The only Oz example on FiveManBand.Film is Return to Oz. I can't tell if that one is legit because it has zero context.

Probably because fandoms seem to regarding troping their work of choice in a Gotta Catch 'Em All sort of way. Certain tropes that involve the number of people in the main cast as part of the basis of a trope are therefore 'easier' than other tropes to shoehorn. Four-Temperament Ensemble, Four-Philosophy Ensemble, Power Trio, have all had similar problems.
The Oz example isn't legit, especially since Dorothy has been shoehorned into two tropes.
Regarding the Return to Oz film, I'm more familiar with the Oz books than the films, but the red flag that jumps out to me is that they've put a male character in as The Chick (Jack Pumpkinhead).

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. That's what I think, too; people want works to have as many tropes as possible (in fact, some tropes might be especially favourable) and some tropes are easier to shoehorn than others.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project! The OP's format does indeed violate Example Indentation rules. In fact, this is specifically discussed in that article.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"From Mortal Kombat X
- Five Bad Band:
- Shinnok is the Big Bad, a fallen Elder God who wants to get his revenge against Raiden and the Elder Gods for casting him down to the Netherrealm.
- Quan Chi is The Dragon, though in the new timeline, he stays loyal to his boss.
- D'Vorah is The Evil Genius, who acts as The Mole and Sixth Ranger Traitor for Kotal Kahn
- Liu Kang is The Brute, as he and Kitana act as Quan Chi's Co-Dragons during the 25 year gap, and both later take over the Netherrealm after Shinnok's downfall. He was once Raiden's protege, but a series of disagreements between mentor and protege ultimately led to his accidental death at the hands of the thunder god by the end of Mortal Kombat 9. Now feeling betrayed by the god he once called mentor, he serves as Quan Chi's Number Two after being revived as a revenant and actually feels better being one.
- Kitana is the Dark Chick, as she and Liu Kang act as Quan Chi's Co-Dragons during the 25 year gap, and both later take over the Netherrealm after Shinnok's downfall. Like Liu Kang, she actually feels better as a revenant.
- Kung Lao is the Sixth Ranger, though he feels miserable as a revenant and wants to get out of the Netherrealm. He does so in his arcade ending, thanks to Kung Jin not giving up hope on him.
- Havik is the Sixth Ranger Traitor, the cleric of chaos from Chaosrealm. Though Quan Chi uses him to get Shinnok's legendary amulet, he decides to use its destructive powers for his gain to wreck havoc across all realms. And he pays with his life for trying to cheat Quan Chi.
- In Shinnok's arcade ending, it's revealed that the One Being, Mortal Kombat's overall Greater-Scope Villain, is subtly manipulating the fallen Elder God into merging the realms, just as it did with Shao Kahn and Onaga in the past.
I count eight entries there...
Littlest Pet Shop: A World of Our Own used to have this pothole to Five-Man Band:
The six main pets this show focuses on consist of:
- Roxie McTerrier, a Boston Terrier who is The Leader of her friends.
- Jade Catkin, Roxie's roommate in Paw-Tucket, a bombay cat who usually goes in Sarcasm Mode.
- Trip Hamston, a hamster who fancies himself a daredevil and at times, a rapper.
- Quincy Goatee, a pigmy goat who is easily frightened.
- Edie Von Keet, a parakeet who longs to be an actress, inspired by her owner.
- Bev Gilturtle, a box turtle who wants to entertain the other pets.
I removed the pothole because I thought it was misuse. However, I re-added it because I want someone else in this thread to decide if it's correct or not.
Removing what? As I said, this thread is not for changing the definition of any trope.
