"The Day of Unity is about to begin."
"But as exciting as saving the world sounds, it's not nearly as romantic as going on a rescue mission to save your girlfriend."
Eda

Original air date: 5/21/2022

Production code: 220

While the CATS are preparing for the Day of Unity, Luz tries to rescue Amity from being grounded.

Tropes:

  • Against the Setting Sun: A variant, as the entire episode is set against the last sunset before the Day of Unity.
  • All for Nothing: Discussed between the Collector and Belos. The Collector playfully taunts that Belos has been away from the human world for so long that it may not recognize him, let alone his achievements. Belos is not amused by the implications, causing the Collector to worry that Belos will not hold up his end of the bargain of freeing him.
  • Always Save the Girl: Invoked. Luz is sent on a mission to save Amity, specifically so she won't be put in danger during the plot to foil the Day of Unity.
  • Amazon Chaser: When Amity breaks out of her restraints and starts angrily smashing at the Abomatons' barrier, Luz watches her with fascination while her eyes are visibly sparkling.
  • Ambiguously Evil: The Collector is definitely way too okay with Belos's genocide plot and what he does to his Grimwalkers, but it's revealed they aren't directly benefitting from the draining spell and gave him the knowledge of it in exchange for their freedom. In fact, they are also overheard wondering with frustration if Belos has just been lying to them.
  • Ambiguously Human: While it was already unclear as to what Hunter really is due to his nature as a Grimwalker, he reveals not even he himself is sure, as he could be a witch or possibly even a human.
  • Ambiguous Situation: While Alador and Odalia's business relationship has ended, it's not quite clear if this also means their marriage is over or not, but it’s a separation at minimum.
  • Ambition Is Evil: You’d think if Odalia had a shred of common sense, she wouldn’t believe the Emperor’s lies of making her lesser royalty if anyone pointed it out, but for that kind of power, what selfish villain wouldn’t pass that up?
  • Angry Cheek Puff: Alador is shown to puff up his cheeks when mad, just like his daughter does.
Odalia: There you go, making that face.
  • Animation Bump: Amity kissing Luz and the immediate aftermath is animated much more fluidly and expressively than the show's usual style, to the point of changing the art style slightly to make the animation flow better. According to Rebecca Rose on Twitter, the scene was done by Tom Barkel of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Hunter apologizes to a downed EC scout when Luz's group advance on Blight Manor. Unfortunately, he was not happy when he came out.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Luz tries convincing Hunter to reveal that he's a Grimwalker to Gus and Willow, but he turns it around to point at one of her own secrets.
Luz: I don't know what you three went through, but they seem to like you!
Hunter: So I shouldn't worry about how they'd react, right? If that's the case, have you told them about helping Philip?
    Luz: (stunned silence)
Hunter: Yeah... I overheard everything. Don't tell them. Please.
  • Answers to the Name of God: King gives a more benevolent example then most, expressing not hubris but a growing sense of responsibility.
    Darius: Oh, Titan, help us.
    King: ...I'll... do my best.
  • Air Quotes: While speaking with Alador, King makes air quotes when he says "there's not gonna be an 'after' to the Day of Unity." And he manages it while having only three fingers, no less.
  • Atrocious Alias: While talking with King disguised as a guard, Alador calls him "Mr. Scout", implying that King gave that as his name.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": While disguised as coven scouts, when the group is confronted by Odalia, Hunter nails his impression of a guard while the others... not so much. Ironically, Hunter is the one to get them caught (thanks to Kikimora recognizing his "annoying voice").
  • Bad Boss: Odalia forces Alador's team to work through the fire flu and denies them sick leave.
  • Bad Moon Rising: The final scene and the credits show an ominous red moon. It is the very last night before the Day of Unity.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • At first, it seems Amity shattered the Abomatons' dome barrier through her own power. Seconds later, it is revealed that Alador just switched it off.
    • Kikimora appears to nab Hunter and escapes with him, while everyone rushes to catch up after dealing with Odalia. However, when Alador touches Luz, she suddenly poofs, revealing that it's actually Hunter beneath an illusion. Gus explains that Luz had secretly instructed him to swap her and Hunter's appearances so Kikimora would capture her and take her to the Head, both sparing Hunter and allowing her to help Eda.
  • Batman Gambit: Knowing that Kikimora will be gunning for Hunter, Luz tells Gus to disguise her and Hunter as each other. Kikimora captures her as Luz planned so that Luz can get to the draining ceremony to confront Belos and warn the resistance that Belos knows their plan, protecting Hunter in the process.
  • Berserk Button: Belos lashes out at the Collector for saying that Earth may have moved on from him in the centuries since he's been there, especially because Belos has spent so long consuming Palismen he barely qualifies as human.
  • Be Yourself: Luz's Palisman... is an egg, Luz having carved it as such specifically so that it can choose for itself what it wants to be once it hatches.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • Lilith, upon learning that it's part of the plan to have Eda get a coven sigil so she can corrupt the draining spell with her curse, shows nervousness about how it could go wrong and offers to do it instead since she's also cursed. Eda, in turn, is quick to shoot it down, stating that she's had the curse much longer than Lilith and has a better chance of succeeding.
    • Continuing the Like Brother and Sister dynamic that Luz and Hunter share, she inverts it by showing Little Sister Instinct towards him. As Kiki gloats to Hunter about her intention to take him to Belos, Luz angrily tells her to leave him alone. Soon afterwards, she comes up with a plan with Gus to swap places with Hunter as part of a Batman Gambit to be captured in his place, with one of her main motives being to protect him from Belos (as well as saving Eda and the rebels).
    • The Little Sister Instinct moment is shown again when Amity calls out Edric and Emira's names after the latter two were caught by Odalia's Abomaton 2.0s for trying to hijack Kikimora's ship, fearing for their safety. She also becomes furious when their mother coldly tells her that she's just going to ground the twins for a second time.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Alador and King arrive to rescue the kids from Odalia and the Abomatons, after the latter convinces the former to make a Heel–Face Turn.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Amity finally kisses Luz on the lips once Luz returns to the Blight household, to their mutual delight and embarrassment.
    Luz: Oh... crikey!
Amity: [mortified] I can't believe I just did that!
Luz: [also mortified] I can't believe I just said that! "Oh... crikey"? How did I even think that?
  • Bittersweet Ending: Unlike the previous episodes, more emphasis on the bitter. While Alador finally quits Blight Industries, leaving Odalia behind in favour of the resistance, and Hunter has once again avoided being captured and murdered, Kikimora is taking Luz to Belos, and Eda has willingly decided to be branded in order to corrupt the draining spell. On top of this, Belos knows about Eda's involvement, and is almost certain to intercept her when the moment comes.
  • Black Comedy: While Darius is describing his plan to release flesh-eating beetles as a distraction, everyone winces when the abomination miniatures explode from the beetles attacking them. Darius insists that the beetles will only eat a few people, and even then only the small ones.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Darius claims he was "completely unfazed" by Eda's curse attack back in "Eda's Requiem", despite him being shown to be both damaged and in pain from the curse burning him. Eberwolf hisses as their way of calling Darius out and proceeds to give him a smug look in response.
    • Luz starts to point out that Hunter is probably going through a lot after the revelations in the mindscape, but he quickly cuts her off and awkwardly claims he is totally fine about learning Belos is evil, making it obvious that not only is he not fine about Belos but he has a lot of other baggage as well.
  • Body Double: Luz acts as one for Hunter after learning of Kikimora's intentions to bring him to Belos to be killed and that the emperor is already aware of the rebels' plans. She has Gus switch her and Hunter's appearances so Kikimora will capture her by mistake, allowing her protect Hunter and arrive more quickly to warn Eda. Unlike most examples of this trope, Hunter wasn’t aware of what had happened until Luz was gone.
  • Book Ends: Odalia made her first appearance as an antagonist to her youngest daughter and her friends in the second episode of the season. Here, she returns in the second-to-last episode in the same role, except she reveals who she truly is; a traitor.
  • Breaking the Bonds: Amity breaks free of the Abomaton restraint when her frustration with Odalia reaches its boiling point.
  • Call-Back:
    • Kikimora recognizes Hunter once again by his "annoying voice", just as she did at the Knee.
    • Eda's curse and its interaction with bard magic is brought up as a means to corrupt the draining spell.
    • When trying to help, one of the things King offers to do is "create sentient life", as it was revealed earlier in the season that the demons of the Boiling Isles were spawned from the Titan's flesh.
    • Gus uses the mirror earring he stole from Graye in "Labyrinth Runners".
    • When Odalia voices her disapproval of Luz being Amity's girlfriend, she summons up one of Luz's wanted posters from last episode to make her point.
    • Alador's face goes completely red when he's angry enough, just like Amity's in "Lost in Language".
    • The speech Luz makes when discussing why she carved the palisman's shape calls to mind a similar speech Eda said to her at the end of "Witches before Wizards" showing Luz's character development in waiting for a magic staff of her own.
  • Can't Believe I Said That: Luz's response after she and Amity have their first on-the-lips kiss is "crikey". She can't believe that she even came up with that and should have been cooler about it.
  • Captured on Purpose: Luz combines this with a Batman Gambit. She learns that Belos is aware of the rebels' plans, meaning that Eda and the rest of them are in danger with no way for her to warn them, and that Kikimora wants to capture Hunter and take him to the Emperor for a reward. In response, Luz quickly comes up with a plan with Gus for him to swap her and Hunter's appearances with illusions, and in her Hunter disguise, lets herself be kidnapped and taken away by Kiki without attempting to fight back. It's all with the goal of getting to the Head much more quickly to find and help Eda, while also keeping the real Hunter far away from the man who wants to kill him.
  • Cassandra Truth: Amity tries again and again to reason with Odalia that Belos is a witch hunter, and the Day of Unity will spare no witches. A more sensible witch would've at least taken their daughter's warning with a grain of salt. But blinded by greed, ambition, and Belos's false promises, Odalia instead purposefully glosses it over as more of Amity's "acting out". The episode later reveals that Odalia was fully aware of what the Day of Unity would do, but thought she and her family would be exempt from Belos' genocide if they helped him.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Luz learns from Kikimora that she plans on handing Hunter over to be killed and that the emperor is quite aware of what the rebels' plan. Luz then has Gus use his illusions to switch places with Hunter and intentionally gets herself captured by Kikimora so she can protect both Hunter and Eda from Belos.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: Parodied and subverted. After one of Amity's punches to the barrier seems to break it, she wonders aloud how she did it and whether it was because she believed in herself hard enough. Then Alador reveals his presence and corrects her that, no, he just used the remote to turn it off (though he does kindly tell her that she nearly had it).
  • Cliffhanger: After switching places with Hunter during the fight with Odalia, Luz is now being transported straight to Belos as Eda takes her position for the Day of Unity.
  • Clone Angst: Hunter is still processing his feelings after learning he's a Grimwalker, calling himself a copy of someone Belos murdered, and doesn't know if this makes him a witch or a human. Luz tries convincing him to tell Willow and Gus, but he still refuses.
  • Combat Pragmatist:
    • When Alador uses a control device to take over the Abomatons, Odalia doesn't waste any time fighting them and summons ghost-like creatures who take the device from her husband.
    • Kikimora is at the top of her game and not pulling any punches this time around. She makes full use of the Abomatron, opening by simply trying to crush Luz and her friends and using who she thought was Hunter as a living shield against attacks. When engulfed in darkness by Gus' illusion, she uses the Abomatron to simply blast apart the factory, forcing Gus to give up his concentration to avoid debris.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Hooty is convinced that disguising him as a Coven guard is just a trick to get him to wear clothes and declares that it won't work.
  • Commonality Connection: In a darker way than usual, Hunter points out that both he and Luz have an additional connection to Belos that they are hiding from their friends; Hunter is a Grimwalker created by Belos, and Luz gave Belos something he needed for his plans.
  • Condescending Compassion: Odalia pretends to have sympathy for Kikimora over the latter's demotion, all so she can make her the offer of testing out the Abomatron.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Eda refers to Amity as "Bossy Boots", the nickname she gave her back in "Eclipse Lake".
    • Eda is able to have her own head removed with no adverse side effects, something that hasn't happened since the very first episode.
    • Gus uses the illusion charm he took from Adrian Graye in "Labyrinth Runners" to see through the illusion around Blight Manor.
    • Luz once again calls Amity "sweet potato".
    • Luz promises Amity that their date will have "no monsters, no mysteries, no deadly duels", referencing the time they spent together in "Follies at the Coven Day Parade", "Any Sport in a Storm", and "Reaching Out" respectively.
  • Copycat Mockery: An annoyed Kikimora repeats Odalia's words to herself.
Odalia: Ah, if only there was a way to show Belos your true worth. (leaves)
Kikimora: "If only there was a way to show Belos your—" (growls)
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: As to be expected from someone like her, Odalia forces Alador's team to work through their fire flu, denying them sick leave, fires them when they refuse, and demands that they still work for her. She even treats her marriage to Alador as a business arrangement. When he quits, she snaps that he won't get a severance package and she'll just find a more suitable business partner.
  • Crush Blush: Luz blushes happily when she sees Amity's silhouette through her window. Soon after, both girls blush bright pink after their Big Damn Kiss.
  • Dangerous Phlebotinum Interaction: Invoked by Darius, who intends to substitute Eda for Raine in the draining spell so her curse will corrupt the spell and break it.
  • Did You Just Scam Cthulhu?: The Collector is heard by King wondering if Belos is lying to them, becoming frustrated and angry as they consider the idea that, despite all the time they've spent together and everything he's done for Belos, the Emperor is not going to fulfill his end of the deal and free them.
Collector: He's my friend, right? He wouldn't lie- he wouldn't. He wouldn't! We've spent hundreds of years playing his game. I wanna play a new game.
  • Discriminate and Switch: With the Boiling Isles being a Non-Heteronormative Society and all, Odalia is more concerned that Amity is dating someone wanted by the Emperor than her dating someone of the same gender.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Kikimora thinks that Belos will make her Golden Guard, while the audience knows the title is exclusive to his Grimwalkers and not a position anyone would actually want.
    • Kikimora and Odalia believe that Belos (who happens to be a witch hunter) will spare and reward them for their loyalty.
    • Odalia accuses Amity of convincing Edric and Emira to "act out" even though they've been doing it for a long time with Amity against it. Though in fairness, they were never acting out against their mother until now.
    • Alador realizes he's been a bad father and promises King (dressed as a Coven scout) that he intends to spend more time with his kids after the Day of Unity. King reluctantly informs him that, unless Belos is stopped, there won't be an "after".
    • Odalia accuses Alador of ruining all their hard work while doing everything in her power of making sure that the Day of Unity happens. Being drained and dead will certainly ruin Odalia and her legacy.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Discussed. When Amity is trying to think of what Luz would say when things look like they're are their Darkest Hour, Amity says that Luz would say something "dorky, but also sweet", which calms Amity down enough to focus.
  • Enter Stage Window: Luz enters Amity's room through her balcony window, using a large vine from a plant glyph to get herself high enough to reach it.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Amity finds herself betrayed by Odalia, who was willingly complicit in the Emperor’s genocidal plan that would mean the end of their kind. Amity makes it clear her mother will pay.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Played with. While Odalia respects (to some degree) Amity's orientation, she has no compulsions about voicing that she'd rather replace Luz with a more "suitable" girlfriend (her excuse being that Amity shouldn’t be dating girls who appear on wanted posters), indicating she has no remorse about taking away her daughter's happiness. If Luz were a boy, it wouldn’t make any difference as to how she’d treat Luz, not in the slightest.
  • Everyone Has Standards: After learning of the Day of Unity's true purpose from King, Alador immediately turns against the Emperor's Coven, and is disgusted when he learns that Odalia knew about it but didn't do anything.
  • Evil Gloating:
    • Odalia mocks Amity and her efforts to break through the barrier that traps her and her friends.
    • Kikimora gloats that she will hand Hunter over to Belos and hopes that she will become the new Golden Guard after his death. When Luz tries to stand up for him, Kikimora gleefully reveals that Belos knows about the CATs and their plan.
  • Evil Is Petty: Odalia knew her daughter was associating with Luz, and that Luz is a wanted criminal, but Odalia didn't know until now that Amity was dating Luz. Considering Odalia had no intention to turn Luz over to the Emperor beforehand, it's clear she'll do this out of spite for Amity and then find her a new girlfriend afterwards.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When Kikimora flies off in the Abomatron:
Alador: Ha! The jetpack actually works! Ha! (beat, then his face falls) Oh. Ugh, the jetpack actually works.
  • Eyes Are Mental: More like mouths are mental. Eda's sharp tooth, Luz's lip curl and Hunter's tooth gap all become visible at some point while they're disguised with illusions.
  • Face Palm: Darius does this after Raine once again calls the resistance group "the CATS" and has everyone hiss as a catchphrase.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Hunter somehow fails to notice he's been disguised as Luz with an illusion until she's been captured.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Demonstrated by Hunter, Willow and Gus. Gus, the Thief, uses his illusions to detect and fool enemies and aid his friends in battle; Hunter, the Fighter, primarily attacks by slamming his opponents with his staff at close range and is trained in mundane combat; and Willow, the Mage, is a magical powerhouse who relies on her talent in plant magic to deal devastating damage. It’s nicely shown when they're trespassing into the Blight property.
  • Five-Man Band: Luz and friends form one in the later half of the episode. Luz is The Hero, Hunter The Lancer, Willow The Big Guy, Gus The Smart Guy, and Amity The Heart.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing:
    • When Amity is punching the barrier, it suddenly starts cracking and shatters right before she hits it again. A moment later, we see that it wasn't her that broke the barrier, but Alador remotely turning it off.
    • When Alador tells Luz she's welcome anytime and he and Amity touch Luz's shoulders, rather than smiling or looking happy at all, she's just wincing in anticipation. Seconds later "she" disappears in a puff of blue smoke and is revealed to actually be Hunter.
  • Flash Step: Luz appears to somehow perform this while knocking Willow out of the way of Kikimora's mech. It serves as a clue that it's really Hunter who has been made to look like Luz.
  • Flowers of Romance: Unlike when she usually uses a plant glyph, the vines that Luz summons to raise herself to Amity's balcony are covered in flowers, giving a romantic backdrop for when she makes her presence known.
  • Forced Transformation: Downplayed. Luz convinces Gus to cast an illusion to make her and Hunter look like each other so Kikimora will capture her. However, Hunter is not told about the plan and only realizes what's happened once Kikimora catches Luz and he looks down at his hands to discover his new appearance. He mentions to Alador that it happened too fast for him to really do anything about it.
  • Foreshadowing: A decent amount towards The Reveal at the end that Luz and Hunter switched places using Gus's illusions:
    • If one looks very carefully, while trapped in the barrier, Luz is positioned at the back of the group after speaking to Kikimora and Hunter is near the center. When the force field is destroyed, the two have swapped positions with "Hunter" in the back and "Luz" in the middle.
    • While pushing Willow out of the way of Kikimora, it's possible to notice Hunter's yell is synched with Luz's mouth.
    • After Kiki reveals that she plans to turn Hunter over to the Emperor and that he's aware of Eda's participation in the rebellion, Luz is shown whispering a plan to Gus, which Hunter notices.
    • When "Hunter" lands on the ground after dodging Kikimora's attack, "he" glances at "his" own arm with noticeable surprise.
    • After Odalia's barrier is taken down, "Luz" performs Hunter's Flash Step. In fact, this is the only magic "she" uses throughout the fight, otherwise just looking ready to fight with fists and not using any glyphs at all.
    • On a similar note, neither Luz nor Hunter speak for the duration of the fight, because their voices would give away their act (as it's established earlier that the illusion spell for changing one's appearance doesn't change their voice).
    • As Kikimora grabs "Hunter" with the mecha, "he" blows a raspberry at her, which would be an Out-of-Character Moment for Hunter, but is perfectly in-character for Luz. "He" also makes no real effort to get away from Kiki and looks more annoyed than scared, even though it's been established that Hunter is so terrified of meeting Belos again that the idea alone has caused him multiple severe panic attacks.
    • While it's difficult to see, there are some facial traits that shine through the disguise, especially later on in the fight as Gus is getting more tired. "Hunter" has Luz's curled lip, while "Luz" has Hunter's tooth gap.
    • While Odalia is surrounding everyone, it's possible to notice "Luz" staring at "her" own hands, either out of confusion, or because "she" is holding Flapjack.
    • Gus can be seen casting some kind of spell after the force field is broken, which he maintains while visibly sweating from the strain despite his magic having no obvious effects. The spell circles remain on his wrists both before casting the darkness illusion over Kikimora, and after it is broken.
  • For Your Own Good: Odalia maintains that her actions are for the good of the family and Amity will thank her for helping Belos after he's made them nobility. It's pretty clear, however, that the only person she's trying to help out is herself.
Odalia: (to Amity) You'll thank me when you're a literal princess, princess.
  • Framed for Heroism: Amity initially thinks that she broke the Abomatons' barrier on her own, only for Alador to reveal that he actually turned them off with his remote.
Alador: But you almost had it, sweetie.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Sort of. While they don't actually exchange bodies, Luz has Gus switch her and Hunter's appearances so she'll be captured by Kikimora instead of him.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: At the end of the episode, Hunter explains he didn't know he had switched places with Luz until she had been taken. Looking carefully, one can see the exact moment he realizes what Luz has done, as he looks far more confused and distressed than the others when Kikimora flies off with the disguised Luz, and afterwards Hunter stares at his hands in shock.
  • Funny Background Event:
    • A sign with the CATs' "HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS" Battle Cry can be seen nailed over both the doorways of the balcony in their hideout.
    • Right after The Big Damn Kiss, the camera cuts back to Amity's overjoyed, blushing face as she watches Luz lose her mind over the dorky comment she made... while a sign right behind her reads "THIS COULD BE YOU!"
  • Glamour:
    • Concealment stones this time are used to shapeshift into another person, but to do so, one has to scan the person they are impersonating with the stone before applying the disguise. However, they will not change the subject's voice, so Eda is warned to avoid talking when she gets to her post.
    • Gus can use his illusions to change a person's appearance into that of someone else. He is unable to alter a person's voice and maintaining the spell is taxing, though he does not need to scan a person to replicate them. Furthermore, the process of casting the spell is undetectable and the subjects themselves may not even notice the illusion.
  • Glamour Failure: All three disguised characters in the episode have at least one characteristic peek out from under the illusion. Luz still has her curled lip, Hunter still has his tooth gap, and Eda still has her gold tooth.
  • Godzilla Threshold: In order to corrupt the Draining Spell, Eda is forced to do what she swore she’d never do and get a Bard coven sigil to impersonate Raine.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Played for Laughs with Darius' abomination display, which has a swarm of flesh-eating beetles attack a crowd as a distraction. As the beetles bare their teeth, the shot cuts to the resistance members being splattered in goo.
  • Hate Sink: Odalia has always been odious enough in her few previous appearances, but this episode, she officially hits a new low. According to Alador, she's the kind of person to fire her employees for being sick, and then expects them to keep working anyway. She disproves of Amity's new girlfriend for being a criminal when she learns they're going out, and verbally abuses Amity's Rage Breaking Point as "embarrassing". And when Alador tries to warn her about the Day of Unity killing everyone, it's revealed she knew the whole time and (under the belief she and her family will be spared) intends to ride Belos' tailcoat while every other innocent witch dies off! Alador and Amity even disown her for how despicable she's become, and she in turn sneers that she'll just find a better "business associate".
  • Hates Their Parent: How Amity comes to feel about her mother Odalia by the climax of the episode with the discovery of just how deluded, self-centered and outright evil she is, disowning her by outright saying that she will never talk to her again. Odalia for her part doesn't care and more or less washes her hands of her own family for better "business partners".
  • Hearing Voices: Like in the previous episode due to the connection he made in "Edge of the World", King overhears the Collector pondering over Belos possibly betraying him.
  • Heel–Face Turn: King reveals to Alador that the Day of Unity will kill everyone, and as such he quits Blight Industries and tries to talk some sense into Odalia, only for her to state she not only knew what would happen at the Day of Unity, but didn't care.
  • Heel Realization: When Alador vents his frustrations to King about being a Henpecked Husband, he also notes that he hasn't been a good father to his kids, and decides to spend more time with them. Since there might not be a tomorrow, Alador must reconsider quickly.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Luz has Gus make an illusion to switch her and Hunter's appearances and gets herself captured in his place by Kikimora to save the Grimwalker from being killed by Belos and allow her to warn the rebels that the emperor is aware of their plan.
  • Heroic Willpower: Amity thinks this is how she managed to break through the Abomatron's barrier, but it's subverted to her disappointment when it turns out her father simply turned it off. Alador, however, points out that Amity did at least do a decent amount of damage.
  • Hey, You!: Another example of what a crappy mother Odalia is when she only referred to Edric and Emira as just "the twins". This shows that she mostly sees them as a set of two instead of their own person, unlike Amity and Alador, who have only called them by their names.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: Odalia describes the Abomatron as having 700 snorsepowernote .
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Odalia knew about the Draining Spell, and thinks Emperor Belos will reward her family for their loyalty. Unfortunately, she's too blinded by her desire for power to see that the Draining Spell will spare no branded witch.
  • Hourglass Plot: In "Eda's Requiem", Eda was worried about Luz and King having to leave her someday. Now, Luz and King are worried about Eda having to sacrifice herself to save everyone.
  • Human Shield: Kikimora uses Hunter (actually Luz) as a shield against Willow when she's about to attack with vines, forcing Willow to divert them for fear of hitting one of her friends.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: Luz learns that Hunter is refusing to tell Willow and Gus about his nature as a Grimwalker and tries convincing him to open up, only for him to correctly guess that she herself isn't planning to inform anyone about how she accidentally helped Philip, which she also learned in the mindscape. This causes Luz to back off and she agrees not to reveal Hunter's secret.
  • I Have No Daughter!: How does Odalia react to Amity disowning her? By pretty much disowning her back along with the rest of the family, declaring she'll find better "business partners".
  • Immortal Immaturity: The Collector talks about all the games they want to play after the Day of Unity, and in secret they voice about their insecurities involving their deal with Belos like a small child, asking if he's really their friend.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Luz learns Hunter overheard the entire conversation between her and Belos.
    • King tells Alador about the draining spell.
    • Odalia finds out about Luz's status as Amity's girlfriend.
    • Darius offscreen found out about the Hexside resistance and created a network with them, which is how he was able to dispatch Gus, Willow, and Hunter.
  • Invisibility Cloak: A Coven scout guarding Blight Manor uses illusion magic to render himself invisible. Gus is able to see through it with Graye's mirror earring, allowing Luz to ambush the scout with a plant glyph. Unfortunately, they missed the Abomaton that was also invisible, but Willow and Hunter disable it.
  • Ironic Echo: After Willow takes out the Coven Scout guarding Blight Manor, Hunter yells "Sorry, man" as they head to the front door. When the kids are finally caught by Odalia, that same Coven Scout shows up and repeats Hunter's words back at him in a mocking tone. They also do a wordless example at the same time by cracking their knuckles in the same manner that Willow did before attacking them.
  • It's All About Me: Odalia knows about the draining spell, but assumes Belos is going to spare her and her family, letting them live like royalty in the new world. When her family turns against her, she just decides to get a new business partner.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk:
    • As if being an Abusive Parent to her children didn't make her bad enough, this episode reveals that Odalia is aware of what Belos is planning with the draining spell and is actively helping him in order to curry favor for the future, making her a traitor to witchkind on top of that, something even Alador protests against.
    • Kikimora is also aware of the draining spell but could not care less and is only concerned about bringing "Hunter" back to Belos for a potential reward, or to just see the Emperor actually maim and torture him.
  • Jet Pack: The Abomatron is equipped with a fairy-powered jet pack. Alador is ecstatic that it works, at least until he remembers that Kikimora just kidnapped one of their allies.
  • Karmic Shunning: Odalia's family turn their backs on her when it's revealed that she knows all about the draining spell and fully supports it under the delusion she would be spared. While Amity was already growing angry with the way Odalia treats Luz and how she tries to separate them, learning that she knows all about and supports Belos' draining spell ends up being the last straw for her and she disowns Odalia as her mother. Alador is similarly disgusted when he finds out the truth and he ends his business partnership with Odalia. Odalia doesn't care about any of that and simply decides she can get new partners.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Amity bemoans that she and Luz haven't gotten to spend any proper time together, and Luz promises to take her on a "slice of life" date when everything is settled. This calls to mind the fans' disappointment that we never got to see Luz and Amity spend some time off or filler episodes together, due to Disney cutting the show's third season short and forcing the writers to speed the plot along.
  • Leave the Two Lovebirds Alone: Edric and Emira notice that Luz is at the balcony and proceed to leave the room and let Amity express how she expects Luz to respond before Luz admits that Amity is right about what she would say.
  • Les Collaborateurs: Despite knowing the truth about the Day of Unity, Odalia still goes along with the Emperor's plan, citing that she had made a deal with him to be spared and live as nobles after it has passed. Of course, the chances of the Emperor (a witch hunter who is determined to leave no witch alive) actually holding up his end of the deal are nil at this point.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!:
    • After Odalia rejects the notion of Luz being Amity's girlfriend and states that they'll find her a new girlfriend who "isn't on any wanted posters", Amity is so angry that she immediately turns the Abomination cuffs on her wrists into a spiked gauntlet and repeatedly punches the barrier, though it's downplayed since she's not able to actually break it on her own.
    • Alador's eyes glow purple as he uses his Abomination magic to fight Odalia and destroy the Abomatons. Likewise, in the first time in the series that we see Odalia in combat, she channels magic through her amulet to create ghost-like creatures, possibly through Oracle magic.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Unlike Alador—whose skills with Abomination magic were passed on to his youngest daughter Amity—Odalia seems to use Oracle magic, which none of her kids inherited.
  • Malfunction Malady: Alador came down with Fire Flu, which causes a witch to breathe fire during a sneeze.
  • Me's a Crowd: While reminding Belos of his promise, the Collector creates two other projections of his face, who all talk in unison.
  • Mini-Mecha: Odalia unveils an abomination-powered mecha called an Abomatron for Kikimora to control.
  • Modified Clone: Hunter mentions the possibility that he's a human, which would then make him a human clone modified to pass for a witch.
  • Mood-Swinger: The Collector goes from nervously wondering if Belos is really their friend to angrily growling out that they want to play a new game in about thirteen seconds.
  • More Expendable Than You: When learning that Eda's curse is going to be used to corrupt the draining spell, Lilith volunteers to take her place as she also has the curse, but Eda refuses.
  • Moving the Goalposts: Implied. Odalia's disapproval of Amity dating Luz has less to do with her being lesbian or a human, and more to do with how she's "on wanted posters". In fact, Odalia supports the idea of Amity having a girlfriend, as long as its on her terms. This frames it as though Odalia only disapproves of her daughter's significant other because she didn't choose for her.
  • The Napoleon: After climbing into the Abomatron's cockpit, Kikimora is overjoyed that she's now taller than everyone in the room.
  • Never My Fault: Instead of acknowledging her actions, Odalia immediately blames Alador for destroying many Abomatons which she called them "their life's work" even though he had a right thing to do since it's her own fault that she made her own choice of aiding Emperor Belos in his genocide against witchkind.
  • Never Say "Die": While talking about the original person he's based on, Hunter refers to his fate as Belos making him 'disappear' rather than saying the Emperor murdered someone.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: By revealing Belos knows about the rebellion's plans to stop him through her Evil Gloating and announcing she's going to turn in Hunter, Kikimora instigates Luz's quick-thinking in switching places with Hunter via an illusion from Gus, so she'll be captured and brought to the Head in time to warn the CATs.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: The four wild witches that are seen getting arrested are apparently modeled on four real Korean pop singers, which results in them standing out a bit.
  • Noodle Incident: While venting to King, Alador mentions a time when he was recovering from "the fire flu". Then he sneezes fire, miserably saying that it's a side effect, meaning it was fairly recent.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Alador asks King (who is disguised as a Coven Scout) if he has any children. King admits he doesn't, and adds that he's not the best person to ask since he never even met his own father. While King probably meant for it to come off as matter-of-fact, it unintentionally makes Alador reflect on how he hasn't made time for his own children.
  • Oblivious Transformation: While not actually transformed, Hunter takes until he sees Luz get captured while disguised as him and looks down at his hands for him to realize an illusion has been cast to make him resemble Luz. It's enough time for Luz to pull off her Batman Gambit and take his place as Kikimora's captive.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Edric and Emira have two of these:
    • First, they apparently tried to burn down their parents' factory so that productions of the Abomatons would be prevented, which got them grounded alongside Amity.
    • Afterwards, after Luz and the rest of the Hexsquad freed them and Amity from Blight Manor, the twins were working to steal Kikimora's ship while the others try to stop Odalia.
  • Off with His Head!: After being disguised as Raine, Eda tests out if her ability to detach body parts still works by lifting her head off. Raine is both amused and freaked out.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kikimora captures Luz while she is disguised as Hunter and presents the girl to the group before fleeing. Hunter then realizes he and Luz have switched appearances and stares in fear and confusion as it dawns on him what just happened.
  • Original Position Fallacy: Odalia and Kikimora are completely fine with The Purge that Belos plans for the Day of Unity since they believe they will among those who are spared and rewarded for loyality. They never hit on the idea that it will be a Final Solution to all witches on the Boiling Isles and they are working on their own demise.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: And it's quite a good thing Kikimora is too stupid to notice.
    • When about to be grabbed by Kikimora, "Hunter" defiantly sticks out "his" tongue — something the actual Hunter would never do, but Luz definitely would, and has done in the past.
      • Similarly, "Hunter" looks more annoyed than scared while in Kikimora's grasp, and makes no real attempts to escape. This does not fit Hunter, a Nervous Wreck who's so terrified of being sent back to Belos that the idea alone has caused him multiple severe panic attacks, but it does match with Luz, who always remains defiant against her captors when she is in any way held prisoner, and who wanted to get kidnapped by Kikimora as part of her Batman Gambit.
    • "Luz" never takes out any glyphs to do battle and only holds up "her" fists, which doesn't make sense for someone who needs glyphs to fight, but makes perfect sense for Hunter, who's trained in hand-to-hand combat.
    • During the fight, neither Luz nor Hunter speak, or make any kind of sound. This is unlike either of them, as Hunter tends to snark during combat, and Luz often tries to get her opponent to see reason. Of course, this is because the illusion doesn't disguise their voices, and neither of them can speak without giving the game away.
  • Palm on Cheek Pose: Luz cups her own cheeks in embarrassment over saying "crikey" in response to Amity kissing her.
  • Papa Wolf:
    • Alador is implied to have made some kind of deal with Odalia in the past to leave their children out of their work at Blight Industries, as Odalia threatens to go back on it and draw up the paperwork to make them part of the company when he expresses doubt about their deal with the Emperor. He also later laments to King that he hasn't been a very good dad, and is determined to change that, culminating in them both arriving to save Amity and the others when Odalia captures them. At the end, he agrees to go with her when she wants to rescue Hunter (or, actually, Luz) together with the other kids.
    • In a parallel to why Eda wanted Luz to go rescue her girlfriend, it is heavily implied the real reason Darius ordered Hunter to protect Luz is to take make sure the teenager did not get put in harm's way by being present at the ceremony for the Day of Unity.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The kids sneak into Blight Industries using Coven Scout uniforms that do nothing else to disguise their appearances. Kiki ends up recognizing Hunter’s voice, leading Gus to trip and blow their cover.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • After Alador's Big Damn Heroes moment, in which he reveals that Amity didn't actually break the barrier with her gauntlet and he just deactivated it, he encouragingly tells her that she almost had it and calls her "sweetie".
    • At the end of the episode, Alador apologizes to Luz for Odalia's behavior, and tells her that she's always welcome at the Blight home. Though he discovers immediately afterwards that "Luz" is actually Hunter in disguise.
  • Properly Paranoid: Belos has backup Coven heads at the ready in case any of them happen to be absent for the Day of Unity.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: Kikimora shows signs of this when she enjoys piloting her own Abomatron a little bit too much.
  • Quickly-Demoted Leader: Kikimora has been demoted following her previous appearance, presumably for failing to turn in a single resident of the Owl House, and is begrudgingly acting as a delivery service for Odalia.
  • The Quisling: Odalia and Kikimora sell out the rest of witchkind to curry favor with Belos and acquire a future in the Boiling Isles.
  • Race Against the Clock: The CATS have 24 hours before the Day of Unity to stop Belos's plan. Unfortunately, Belos knows their plan and has arranged a trap.
  • Raised Hand of Survival: The Collector imitates this when suggesting Belos whip up a new Grimwalker, a nod to Hunter being a recreation of a dead man.
  • The Reveal:
    • Apparently the Draining Spell isn't necessary to free the Collector, Belos just made them tell him about the spell with the agreement that he'll free them after the Day of Unity plan is successful. The Collector is also starting to become worried that Belos isn't going to hold up his end of the bargain.
    • Apparently, sometime between the events of "Labyrinth Runners" and this episode, Darius was able to contact Hunter so that he would be able to aid Luz along with Gus and Willow.
    • Alador had some kind of bargain with Odalia where, (presumably) in exchange for him making Abomatons for her and being her business partner, she doesn't involve their kids in their work. When he expresses suspicion of what the Emperor is using their Abomatons for and suggests reconsidering their deal with him, Odalia gets him to back off by threatening to officially make their kids a part of Blight Industries.
    • Hunter overheard the conversation between Luz and Belos in "Hollow Mind" despite being buried at the time, and knows that Luz inadvertently aided Philip.
    • Katya is revealed to have a staff of her own, topped by a Palisman resembling a rhinoceros beetle.
    • Willow mentions that Luz was gone for a week during her, King and Hooty's trip to Titan Trapper Island.
    • Odalia has been aware of the Draining Spell for some time, but made a deal with Belos, believing that she and her family would be spared and made nobility in the post Day Of Unity world for her troubles.
  • Rewatch Bonus: It's easy to miss a lot of the foreshadowing regarding Luz and Hunter switching places on the first watch with the sheer amount of action and revelations occurring.
  • Right Behind Me: Amity talks to Edric and Emira what Luz would say to her is she was there, unaware that Luz is listening. Instead of interrupting, Luz decides to let Amity regain her resolve on her own.
  • Roaring Rampage of Rescue: Believing Hunter has been caught by Kikimora, though it's actually Luz in disguise, an enraged Willow comes after the demon and sends numerous giant vines after her while her eyes glow. Despite being in her powerful new Abomatron mecha, Kikimora is forced to use Luz as a Human Shield to get Willow to stop. The witch is then the first to give chase by rushing to an airship to follow Kikimora.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Emira tells Amity that as loud as they may try to shout to their parents about the Day of Unity, "money always shouts louder". This does indeed prove to be true with Odalia, who turns out to be fully aware of the true purpose of the Day of Unity, and is selling out the rest of the Isles.
  • Secret Handshake: Hunter and Gus have created one between them in the time since "Labyrinth Runners". It involves them fistbumping, then smacking their foreheads together, followed by a fake explosion sound.
  • Secret-Keeper:
    • Luz and Hunter for each other. Luz keeps Hunter's nature as a Grimwalker a secret and he doesn't tell anyone that she helped Philip.
    • Likewise, the members of the Owl House keep the fact that King is a Titan a secret to everyone outside the five who already know (Luz, Eda, King himself, Lilith, and Hooty), even the other members of the rebellion. They just can't risk the Emperor finding out.
    • Apparently Odalia knew about the dark intentions behind the Day of Unity but chose not to tell her family (Alador included) knowing how they'd react to the news.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Downplayed. Hunter has known about how Luz accidentally aided Philip since "Hollow Mind", having overheard their conversation while he was buried. Understandably, this is the first chance the two have had to discuss the incident since he fled the Owl House in a panic, but he was considerate enough not to reveal that information to her friends while at Hexside.
  • Serious Business: Apparently, Belos sealed his deal with The Collector via pinkie promise, something they take very seriously.
Collector: You need to have more faith in pinkie swears.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Alador is shown to, just like Amity, have his entire face turn completely red when he gets angry.
Odalia: There you go, making that face.
  • Ship Tease: A bit more between Hunter and Willow. As Kikimora attacks the kids in the Abomatron, Willow is the one that Hunter-as-Luz Flash Steps to knock out of the way. Willow, for her part, gasps in horror when Kiki uses Hunter as a Human Shield to stop her from attacking, and after the fight is over, Willow is the first to rush to the airship to try to use it to save him, only finding out afterwards that it was actually Luz disguised as Hunter who was kidnapped.
  • Shipping Torpedo: When Amity reveals she's dating Luz, Odalia's response is utter disdain, announcing that she'll find Amity a new girlfriend worthy of being associated with the Blight name. This enrages Amity to the point she breaks her abomination restraints and attempts to punch her mother with a spiked gauntlet.
Odalia: Girlfriend? Oh, no, no. That won't do. We'll find you a new girlfriend, someone who isn't on wanted posters everywhere. [conjures Luz's wanted poster and rips it in half]
  • Shout-Out: Kikimora is demoted to delivery service. Does that bring something to mind?
  • Sidequest: Luz finds out Amity is grounded, and on one hand Luz would like to rescue Amity, but on the other hand, stopping the Day of Unity is more important, and she can't risk losing Eda if she runs what amounts to a non-essential errand in the eyes of the resistance. Turns out Darius approved of Luz going on this quest, but not without Willow, Gus, and Hunter accompanying her. Rescuing Amity was a piece of cake, but it turns from a typical sidequest to a more high-stakes mission after the kids find out Odalia is willingly allowing the Emperor's witch genocide to happen, and Luz finding out the Emperor knows of the CATS' plan.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Luz, Willow, and Gus all get some sweet new duds to wear that replace the former's signature outfit and the latter two's usual casual outfits. Downplayed with Hunter, who gets some new shirts but still retains the gloves, pants and boots he used as the Golden Guard.
  • Silent Credits: Similar to the penultimate episode of the previous season, the end credits feature a rolling shot of the Head and a red moon as Luz is being transported in Kikimora's Mini-Mecha.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: After learning that the Draining Spell requires all of the coven heads to function, Lilith suggests just hiding Raine, Darius, and/or Eberwolf until after the eclipse has passed to prevent it, only for Rain and Darius to inform her that it wouldn't work since Belos made sure to get backups for all nine of them after the events of "Eda's Requiem".
  • Skewed Priorities:
    • When Amity is imagining what Luz would say to try and cheer her up, she specifically states that she wont let the world end because the two of them haven't had the chance to go on a proper date yet.
    • Alador is briefly excited that his Jet Pack on the Mini-Mecha worked, before remembering that Kikimora just made off with Hunter (actually Luz) and realizes that's not a good thing.
  • Slice of Life: Invoked and name-dropped by Luz (a fan of anime herself), who promises to take Amity out on a date after the Day of Unity is over that doesn't involve any mysteries or danger, and is just a cute slice-of-life day together.
  • Spanner in the Works: After Luz tells King to stay behind and keep watch, he finds a trail of snack wrappers that leads to Alador. After King reveals the truth to him about the Day of Unity, he frees Luz and her friends from Odalia and fights back against her.
  • Special Edition Title: Instead of the usual end theme, the credits feature a rolling shot of the Isles while Kikimora is transporting Luz to Emperor Belos.
  • Storming the Castle: Luz, King, Willow, Gus, and Hunter storm the Blight manor to rescue Amity, Edric, and Emira after Odalia grounds them.
  • Stranger in a Familiar Land: The Collector points out that this might be the case for Philip/Belos. The latter doesn't take it very well.
  • Take Me Instead: Played with since Luz really doesn't give anyone a choice. Luz learns that Kikimora intends to take Hunter to Belos so he'll be killed and that the CATS' plan has already been found out. She then has Gus switch her and Hunter's appearances and gets herself captured in Hunter's place in order to save him and Eda from Belos.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: If there’s two crimes of Odalia’s that Amity will never forgive, it’s tyranny and treachery. The last thing she tells her mother is that she will never speak to her again, which means every door to future reconciliation is out the window.
  • Title-Only Opening: Befitting this episode's status as a Wham Episode.
  • Token Good Teammate: Alador seems really uneasy about his daughter's involvement with the Day of Unity, which is why Amity and her siblings try to appeal to him to talk sense into her mother.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Hunter is struggling with the realization that he is a Grimwalker and wonders if that makes him a witch or a human. He also is scared how his new friends would react if they knew.
  • Trail Of Breadcrumbs: King finds a depressed, under-the-weather Alador by following a trail of empty chip packets.
  • Twirl of Love: Luz spins Amity around during their reunion.
  • Uncatty Resemblance: A lab rat seen in Alador's lab looks surprisingly like him, complete with brown hair on his head and miniature googles.
  • The Unreveal: Downplayed, but Luz has finally carved her Palisman in the shape of... an egg. Rather than this being the final form of her Palisman, she carved it as such so it could choose what it wants to be once it hatches.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Darius' plan, which he talks about in great detail, ends up being noticed by Belos (at least according to Kikimora), although Eda decides they'll do it differently. On the other hand, Gus and Luz's plan to have her and Hunter switch places, which the audience doesn't hear about until the last minute, does end up succeeding.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: The last we see of Odalia is her disappearing in a cloud of smoke resulting from the destroyed factory, saying that she'll just find a new business partner.
  • Villain Has a Point: The Collector rightly points out that, with how long it's been since Belos last saw the human realm, it's possible his home has been drastically changed, and Philip himself has definitely changed.
  • Villain Opening Scene: The Cold Open takes place at the head of the Titan with a talk between Belos and The Collector.
  • Villainous Friendship: Played with. The Collector seems to genuinely consider Belos to be his friend, but Belos is seen getting upset with their antics and even attacks them. The entity also reveals their own doubts that Belos is just using them and won't fulfill his end of the bargain and free them.
  • Villain Team-Up: Odalia and Kikimora work together in apprehending the kids and Alador when they interfere with their schemes.
  • Visual Pun: Amity's anger at Odalia saying that Luz isn't good enough for her causes her abomination restraints to start to bubble before she rips them apart, showing that her anger is literally boiling over.
  • Vocal Dissonance: The illusion spell to change appearances doesn't alter the subject's voice, so those it’s cast on have to remain silent to avoid being discovered.
  • Was It Really Worth It?: The Collector asks if Belos is nervous about going home since it has been centuries since he last set foot in the Human Realm, then taunts him that his consumption of palismen has left him barely containing his "human" shape anymore. That last statement causes Belos to lash out at the Collector and then struggle to reshape his monstrous arm back into human form, inadvertently proving the Collector correct about his fears.
  • We Have Reserves: Darius reveals that Belos has replacements for all the Coven Heads, just in case anything happened to them before the Day of Unity.
  • Wham Episode: As if Odalia wasn't horrible enough already. She knew about the draining spell, but is actively collaborating with the Emperor, securing a deal to be spared and live as nobles after the Day of Unity. Belos knows about the resistance against him and their plans. Alador and Odalia have a fight that could cost them their marriage, Alador joins the heroes, King continues to hear the Collector’s voice, Eda gets a Bard Coven sigil for their plans, and Luz gets captured by Kiki to spare Hunter the same fate and warn the resistance. Oh, and Amity kisses Luz onscreen on the lips for the first time.
  • Wham Line:
    • After being trapped in the barrier, Kikimora reveals to Luz that Belos already knows about their plan and that the resistance is basically walking right into his hands.
    • "They overheard Darius order me to protect you." Said by Hunter, which means he and Darius worked things out at some point offscreen.
  • Wham Shot:
    • Odalia's indifference to leaning the truth about the Day of Unity, revealing she already knew.
    • Just as the group is taking a zeppelin to rescue Hunter, Alador and Amity touch Luz's shoulders...and a blue "poof" of Illusion magic reveals that it's Hunter under an illusion!
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Edric and Emira are last seen being dragged off by two Abomatons after Odalia catches them by one of the Emperor's airships. They don't take part in the battle at the end, and aren't mentioned again. This is justified since this is the second last episode of the season.
  • What Would X Do?: Emira attempts to cheer Amity up by asking her what she thinks Luz would say to her in such a hopeless situation. Amity gets so wrapped up in it that she fails to notice the twins leaving or Luz showing up, with the latter only making her presence known after she finishes (and noting that her imagination was accurate).
  • Would Hurt a Child: Downplayed. It's revealed that Alador made a deal with Odalia to keep their kids out of the family business (Amity's occasional stage work notwithstanding), which she uses as a threat against him. Given how she treats her employees, him included, he has good reason to make sure she won't subject her kids to the same.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Luz performs this, as while she and her friends are trapped by Odalia, Kikimora reveals Belos knows all about the CATS' plans and Eda is in danger and also voices her specific hatred of Hunter and how she wants to take him to Belos herself. Luz then has Gus set up an illusion to switch her and Hunter's appearances and goads Kikimora into capturing her in order to save both Hunter and Eda from certain doom.
  • You Are Grounded!: Odalia grounds her children for sneaking around the Blight Industries factory, forcing Luz and her friends to save them.
  • You Will Be Spared: What Odalia thinks the reward will be for her and her family in the Day of Unity in exchange for her service to the Emperor. The other characters and the audience know better.
  • You're Not My Mother: Amity finally has enough of Odalia's callousness and disowns her, stating that she's never talking to her again. Odalia just gives them all a “good riddance” in response.
