Series-Wide
- Fatlus.ExplanationA meme depicting Persona/Atlus fans as overweight Occidental Otaku. Created by 4chan denizens around 2008 as Atlus' games (especially Persona 3) became popular in the /v/ board.
- You had fun at the mall with [character]. [Character] will now die for you.ExplanationHow your Social Links increase in level by doing relatively mundane things, but often result in the characters being exceptionally loyal to the protagonist regardless.
- Are those fangames?ExplanationA meme referring to the general lack of attention the first two/three games in the series get compared to P3 onward. Often used by Trolls just to rub it in for fans of those games.
- Persona [X]note X meaning "most recent cardinal game +1" Confirmed.ExplainationA variation of the joke where people claim references to pre-P3 material or the Pierced Boy and Tatsuya (and/or Maya) showing up in official franchise works is a case of Early-Bird Cameo for later games.
- Everyone is here!Explanation A carryover meme from Super Smash Bros., referencing crossover or collaborations for the latter three games. Like the original meme using characters such as Waluigi, this is often accompanied by characters from the first three games (and/or including the female protagonist of P3P) sitting on the sidelines. Made Hilarious in Hindsight now that Joker's been confirmed as Downloadable Content for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a playable character. The P3 and P4 protagonists being added as DLC battles in Persona 5 Royal with the Pre-P3 ones being nowhere to be seen only added more fuel to this fire.
- People have been using specific lyrics from the openings to jokingly give reactions.
- Atlus is run by dinosaurs.ExplanationA common refrain beginning in 2020, as even fans of the Persona series were beginning to get tired of some of Atlus' business practices. The Persona 5 streaming guidelines are particularly mocked as an example of how Atlus' executives seem to be stuck in the past, particularly since this comes after another Sega-published game in the Like a Dragon series partly became a sleeper hit because of social media and streaming. One person even did fanart of a dinosaur in the style of Persona 5's percentage meter. This also extends to criticisms of other practices, such as Atlus' lengthy localization processes, keeping Persona and mainline Shin Megami Tensei exclusive to different platforms for seemingly no reason, and their inability to port older games to newer consoles. These criticisms have been getting addressed, with Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne seeing a Multi-Platform rerelease on modern platforms, Persona 4 Golden being released on Steam after years of being exclusive to Vita, and Shin Megami Tensei V seeing a simultaneous global release and localization, and on verge of becoming a Discredited Meme due to the announcement of Persona 5 Royal's release for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S as well as Microsoft Windows on October 2022, as well as Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden's release being announced for the same systems on January 2023. Then it loops back to this once fans are utterly disappointed that all Persona 25th Anniversary had were just those ports.
- Persona mouthwash.ExplanationOne of the weirder merch collabs from the anniversary events, specifically the 25th anniversary, thanks to Values Dissonance. Considering the massive letdown of said event, it went from mere fandom Running Gag to this. This also spun off into other merch ideas like Morgana socks.
- Persona fans can't read.ExplanationA Self-Deprecation meme brought upon by the fandom's infamy for Apathy Killed the Cat, Failed a Spot Check, DSP-tier ignorance, and other forms of cluelessness concerning either the games or real-life Japan (the "finding Ginza line" meme from 5 is a notable target for mockery because the game already helpfully provides overhead signs and yellow lines on the floor as visual aids), if not everything else in an exaggerated joke.
- Altus WestExplanationA parody Twitter account notorious for easily tricking fans (in particular Persona fans) into seeing it as the official Atlus West company account. Fake announcements from Altus West are easy bait for clueless fans, making that account's posts prime trolling material. This is not helped by the fact that Atlus West is also guilty for making "casual" posts either (see "The charm salt is real" comment) and the fact that Atlus had instances of account name hijacking caused by problems related to domain renewals, which added to the confusion. Becomes Meme Acknowledgement when the real Atlus West mentioned Altus in one bizarre tweet◊, surprising the latter.
- Persona Collab CurseExplanationEach time a gacha game does a collaboration event with Persona, there's likely a high chance said game will be shut down a few months after launching the aforementioned collab, with Persona 5 being a common victim of this and gained the moniker of "Gacha Killer".
- Benjamin Franklin came back from the dead to write Persona lyrics. Explanation The lyricist for some of the series' music happens to be a guy named Benjamin Franklin. Go on any YouTube video for Persona music that he wrote lyrics for and you'll likely see comments about how Benjamin Franklin wrote these lyrics 300 years in advance or that he came back from the dead to write them.
- While assigning Tarot Motifs to a character ensemble is not exactly new, the later Persona games did encourage players into making "Social Links"/"Confidants" outside the Persona universe.
- 8-element AnubisExplanationA modding community in-joke where one can build an Anubis with all (single-target) elemental magic as a newbie move for coverage. Anubis is typically the most basic Judgement Persona (a late-game Arcana) any new player can obtain once they are able to fuse one and usually has the very basic resistance to Light/Bless or Dark/Curse (if not just the former). Thanks to the manual inheritance mechanic and Skill Cards in the newer games, it is possible to set up an Anubis this way. In 3 and 4, this meme variant is instead a 4-element Anubis, due to Light and Dark being instant-kills considered as Useless Useful Spell and the lack of Psy and Nuke. The name "Anubis" itself can also sound like Inherently Funny Words when it is brought up so often.
- "Is that the Grim Reaper?"ExplanationThe Reaper is a recurring notorious Optional Boss from Persona 3 onwards. Because the boss is named after the Grim Reaper, fans took streamer Berleezy's infamous "It is hot as hell in this funky-ass hot-ass room I'm in... Is that the Grim Reaper!?" moment and have Persona characters say it when The Reaper appears. Meme edits are usually made with A.I. voices, resulting in clips such as this one with Fuuka. PC releases of the newer games may even have fans implementing this meme as a mod.
Persona
- Mark danced crazy!ExplanationA popular Good Bad Translation. Just like "You spoony bard!", Atlus kept this line in for the PSP remake/retranslation.
- Black MarkExplanationAmong other bizarre circumstances surrounding Mark in the localization was his Race Lift from Japanese to Black, to make the game seem more American.
- NOW I'M SUPER GUIDOExplanationAnother gem from the initial localisation. The original line was "Now I'm God Kandori" but it was changed due to Dub Name Change and avoiding to call a human "God". Unfortunately, this line wasn't kept.
- "LIVE IS BALLING MANLY!"ExplanationThe PSP version featured a divisive new soundtrack, with atrociously-pronounced Gratuitous English lyrics even less intelligible than Persona 3's soundtrack. The actual lyric is "Lived in buried memory" from 'A Lone Prayer', the battle theme. The opening line from this track also gets used as an Interrupting Meme to poke fun at the game's random encounter rate, and how easy random battles are.
Persona 2
- Let's Positive Thinking!ExplanationUlala once tried to say Maya's catchphrase. It didn't go so well.
- Motorcycle noises.ExplanationOne of the stranger negotiation options.
- I'm offended!ExplanationA response some demons can give in a conversation, and can sometimes be the result of some hilariously benign statements such as the one above.
- Sunglasses Hitler. ExplanationIn the re-released version of Innocent Sin, Hitler was given sunglasses and a coat as well as had his name changed to The Fuhrer. Despite this, it is painfully obvious who it really is.
- Being a man means... [Random Response] ExplanationOne of Tatsuya's quotes upon successful use of the "Discuss Manliness" contact. The fandom ran with the possible responses and coming up their own.
- Understand, that there is no point in living! Cry, that there is no answer! Where there is darkness, there are shadows! I, myself, am all of you humans!!ExplanationNyarlathotep's Badass Boast just before the final fight has become quite iconic and beloved within the fandom.
- The sin was innocent, the punishment eternal.ExplanationA play on the naming of the games that make up the duology, specifically how the notion of "sin" and "punishment" tie together.
- Baofu's beard.ExplanationA bit of a Running Gag in that Baofu does indeed have a short beard on his chin that is very subtle and hard to spot, causing most to believe he doesn't have any facial hair and making it almost a rite of passage for a fan to notice it.
- Drug Addict Maya.
- Being Tatsuya is suffering.ExplanationTatsuya's status as an Iron Woobie is a meme on itself, especially since many consider his entire storyline to be a Fate Worse than Death.
- Tatsuya's talent in SFX-imitating, as lampshaded in the drama CD. Fans took it and ran with it.
- Tatsuya likes raw meat. note One of the better-known character facts from the guide books is that blue rare steak is one of Tatsuya's favorite things to eat. Just like with his SFX-imitations, the fans went to town with it.
Persona 3
- I NEED UR HALP! ExplanationOne of Aigis' quotes when summoning her Persona is "I need your help." The manner in which this is spoken is out of place compared to her other battle quotes.
- I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS! ExplanationAkihiko's line when trying to declare All-Out Attack. This gets brought up when something highly anticipated is announced or confirmed. It gets used outside any Persona and SMT context as well.
- *Gasp!* There is no mention of Fuuka's Verbal Tic? This page has multiple weaknesses! *GASP* Looks like there's one enemy left! It seems you have to defeat this one to move on! *GASP!* Explanation Sometimes when you are fighting, Fuuka says some pretty obvious things and gasps frequently. It's especially funny when you can't do anything against it, like, if the MC is charmed, she will keep saying "Snap out of it!" but you can't because you are charmed!
- DIDJA SEE THAT SHINJI!? Explanation (Spoilers!)One of Akihiko's victory cries. He begins using this one after Shinjiro's death.
- "Summon your persona" has become an Unusual Euphemism for suicide, since you summon personas in this game via miming the action of shooting yourself in the head (the Evokers aren't real guns, but suicidal ideation is important for summoning one's persona). And in fact, the first time you see Yukari, she's trying to summon hers and it looks like she's about to kill herself. In a similar meme, images of those pointing a gun to their heads invite those making jokes about they are actually about to summon their Persona, instead.
- "I'm dying Mitsuru." "MARIN FUCKING KARIN." ":<" "Death is not a hunter unbeknownst to its prey..."ExplanationMitsuru will often use Marin Karin (a spell which sometimes (read: almost never) inflicts Charm status on enemy) instead of something more appropriate, especially if left on "Act Freely".
- BABY BABY BABY BABY BA-BABY BABY BABY BABY BABY (YEAAAAAAH) ExplanationThe intro of Mass Destruction, the battle theme for ordinary mobs, which is pretty catchy.
- It's like I'm really Japanese!ExplanationUsed to mock the Gratuitous Japanese used in the English localization. Can be used to mock any claims of realism a game has (e.g. "It's like I'm really committing crimes!" for Grand Theft Auto).
- Shota shortsExplanationElementary-aged Ken Amada always wears short shorts, even during the winter. Naturally, this got a nickname.
- Burn My Bread ExplanationA rather infamous mutation of "Burn My Dread". This got worse when Atlus accidentally called a track "Burn My Bread -Last Battle-" on the Spotify release of "Persona 3 & Persona 4 Vocal Sound Selection" (the katakana-titled compilation album dated Nov. 21, 2012).
- Get in the robot, Shinji! ExplanationIn reference to Shinjiro and the similarities between this game and another popular anime series.
- Alternatively, "Fire the evoker, Yukari!"
- In Tartarus, Table Flips You! ExplanationA common joke in the Persona fandom about the Sleeping Table boss, often considered to be That One Boss. Since it is a table, and it has become famous for demolishing players...
- The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed...Explanation (Spoilers!)This is what the Nyx Avatar says every time it changes phases. Since the bossfight has fourteen phases, each with a copious amount of HP, this very quickly gets annoying, and thus worms its way into the player's mind.
- Toaster Aigisnote After Sho calls Aigis and Labrys "toasters", the fandom latched on to this and made it a Fan Nickname for the Anti-Shadow Weapons. Sometimes it gets used with the "Burn My Bread" Memetic Mutation above.
- "More like Stupei, Ace Defective."ExplanationYukari's nickname for Junpei after he calls himself an "Ace Detective".
- STUPID FAGGOT LITTLE COCKSUCKERExplanationA clip from the hentai Mejoku that's often attributed to Yukari due to similarities between English voices.
- Schrodinger's Yukari ExplanationAny time the scene is posted or mentioned online, jokes are made that no one knows which line Yukari will say next.
- Tanaka kills Nyx / Tanaka pays Nyx to fuck off Explanation (Spoilers!)FES has a glitch, which allows player at the very end of the game to initiate Social Link with Persona's resident salesman Tanaka instead of climbing to the top of Tartarus and preventing the Fall (as seen here). The game assumes that you've won against Nyx and moves to the true ending. This allows to skip several hours of gameplay and led to the jokes that Tanaka either defeats Nyx by himself or bribes him using his superior negotiating skills and power of capitalism. Considering Tanaka's arcana, it could also be considered as Deal with the Devil.
- man weed ExplanationA Tumblr user tried naming the protagonist weed man but forgot the Japanese naming order of last name first, first name last. This happened once again in Persona 5, where the same user made the mistake of not knowing the naming order was first name first, last name last that time around.
- It's become a meme to make edits of various different franchises based on the intro of FES,
- Door-kun Explanation (Spoilers!)A common (rather spoiler-y) nickname for 3's protagonist, taken from The Answer where we learn that at the end of the main game, he sacrificed his life to protect humanity from Erebus. His soul's current existence is a statue blocking a door that stops Erebus from destroying all of mankind. Interestingly, Joker from 5 has the nickname "Chair-kun", but the two nicknames are essentially unrelated despite both being named after inanimate objects.
- OX gameExplanationThe Japanese fandom called Persona 3 in general this (ox ゲーム) due to its Scrappy Mechanic in random skill inheritance devolving every fusion into a repeated mashing of O (confirm) and X (cancel) until a satisfactory enough skillset is attained. This particular entry stands out as unlike Persona 4 it has no manual skill inheritance in any of its updated versions prior to Persona 3 Reload (though a fan mod for the Steam version of Portable added it to that release). This sentiment was also shared with Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne pre-update.
- Get nightfall'dExplanationOne Persona modding community in-joke that somehow managed to escape containment, it originated as an obvious attempt at a fake leak◊. It plays into the fandom's Running Gag of Persona 3 remake leaks/rumours and subsequent coping due to being faked or unverified, making it trolling material for a while. This meme remains alive in the modding community, even after Reload was officially announced, due to their tendency to shitpost or snark.
- He pointing that gun the wrong wayExplanationStemming from a Twitter thread where an image macro of 3's protagonist holding a gun is responded to saying he's holding it the wrong way, it's become a meme for Persona 3 fans to respond to the ever-present "[X character] holding a gun" meme with this phrase, as if telling them to summon their Personas.
- Fuuka's face editsExplanationAfter the July 2023 trailer for Reload came out, some fans suddenly started paying more attention to Fuuka's portrait in the original games since Reload upgraded the Character Portraits. Whether ironically or not, they found her cross-eyed look somehow endearing, so once her Reload portrait was shown, editing her face to resemble the older portrait or just to create hilarious results (or even... less pleasant results) became a trend in the Persona subreddit. Example.◊
- It's Going Down Now (Cleanest Version) ExplanationA running joke revolving around reuploads of 'It's Going Down Now', one of the new songs in "Reload". Since the track was being featured in trailers and live performances for a while before either the game or its soundtrack was available, fans started editing the available footage together to assemble the most listenable version of the full song, marking it as "Cleanest as of xx/xx" in process - to the point where "cleaning up" the song became a meme in and of itself. Example.
- Roger Clever ExplanationA US trailer and the English manual's screenshots showed gameplay where the protagonist had this name. The fact that it's such an odd name for the Japanese setting lead to a subset of fans jokingly claiming this to be his Canon Name, especially when "Minato vs. Makoto" debates come up.
- The ending has a weird glitch where the screen gets blurry for some reason? ExplanationThis is in reference to the fact that the ending is beautifully heartbreaking, causing many a player to cry while watching.
- The Answer: SMT fans' natural habitat ExplanationPlenty of people tend to joke that while many fans who have only stuck to the Persona series are startled by the idea of all of SEES fighting each other to the death in the climax of The Answer, fans of Shin Megami Tensei, a series that's partly known for pitting the player against certain in-game friends and allies depending on which route they choose to take, usually take to the idea of a death match with SEES as a natural equivalent of But to Me, It Was Tuesday.
- "You need to be a badass/genius first."ExplanationAs the first Persona game to introduce the social stats, the game locks some social links behind having reached a certain rank in your social stats. The meme comes from how Courage's max rank is called badass, and Academics is genius, which a lot of players thought was hilarious because of the game prompt words it, sounding almost sarcastic. This also leads to jokes about how absurd it looks that Mitsuru will only hang out with the player if they are a genius.
Persona 4
- "Everyday's great at your Junes!" ExplanationAlmost all the scenes of Nanako watching TV have this line.
- "BITCHES AND WHORES." Explanation (Spoilers!)Adachi turns out to be one hell of a misogynistic scumbag when you confront him as the real killer. This particular line comes from a 4chan edit of a Rise hentai doujinshi.
- California Potato Powers. Explanation One of Pursuing My True Self’s lyrics is often misheard as this. “We are lemons and limes” was another popular Mondegreen.
- Nanako is the murderer.Explanation (Spoilers!)The majority of Persona 4's plot is based upon the quest of finding the murderer. Since any spoilers about the murderer will ruin the plot twist and suspense of the game, some fan decided to come up with fake ones to confuse others and ultimately protect them from unwanted spoilers. So far, this one is proven to be the most effective.◊
- I find the above meme bear-ly bear-able. ExplanationTeddie's dedication to bad puns is endless.
- "I'm gonna RENOVATE your ass!" ExplanationThis comes from one of Kanji's anger fits. He threatens to tear down the restaurant he and MC are eating at. When he realizes he's relapsing when he said he was going to try and be nicer, he adds, "I'm going to tear it down... and then build it twice as good! I'm gonna RENOVATE your ass!"
- "I am a shadow... the true self." ExplanationEvery Shadow boss says these words at the start of their fight.
- It's even expanded to Sonic Adventure 2 with Sonic and Shadow.note Shadow was created long before Sonic was born, making the "true self" claim fit even more.
- "YOU'RE NOT ME!" ExplanationBefore said fights start, the actual people confronting their Shadows would always say some variation of the aforementioned phrase out of extreme denial, causing the Shadows to lash out.
- Spoiler alert: Teddie ate five Topsicles! ExplanationFrom Feinne's LP of the game on the Something Awful forums.
- Tohru Adachi: A young Inaba-PD detective. He's buddy in your uncle Dojima. ExplanationFrom a fan hack that had Adachi as the Aeon Social Link. Possibly an Ascended Meme, as he became the Jester/Hunger Social Link in Golden.
- Brotagonist! Explanation A certain thread on GameFaqs caught on like wildfire, and everyone started to call the Silent Protagonist Brotag.
- The anime spawns its own share of memes:
- "RISE END CONFIRMED!" "YOUSUKE END CONFIRMED!"ExplanationThe first one comes after episode 9 and 10, which is full to the brim of Rise/MC Ship Tease. The second comes in episode 12, in which Yosuke and the MC start going by First-Name Basis in a scene that's simply dripping with Ho Yay. Naturally, 4chan had a field day.
- "BROTAG WILL GET EVERYONE LAID."ExplanationAfter episode 15 (which shows the infamous field trip and the love hotel scene), 4chan had another field day.
- "STOP FIGHTING IT, YOSUKE!" note As said above, for all of his Have I Mentioned I Am Heterosexual Today? moments, Yosuke certainly got loads of Ho Yay with the MC. If not at least one downright Stupid Sexy Flanders moment. And again, 4chan milked it for hilarity in all possible ways.
- Cabbage ExplanationA meme that started in Japan. Was originally a line in one scene where Adachi says he only has enough money to buy cabbage. Fandom later decided to make it his Trademark Favorite Food. With the release of the anime, it now has become an Ascended Meme.
- Meat DimensionExplanationOn rainy days, you can take on a challenge at the Chinese diner Aiya that involves eating a very large beef rice bowl. The bowl is described as being so huge that it takes forever to get to the rice, and the game tells you that you suspect that the bowl is a "portal to the Meat Dimension".
- FSteakExplanationOne particular Hiimdaisy webcomic features Teddie asking Chie for some words starting with "F". She quickly replies with this one.
- Gilgamesh's true self ExplanationKanji and Gilgamesh are both voiced by Tomokazu Seki in Japanese. Fans of the Fate series cannot bear the fact that Gilamesh and Kanji (specifically, Shadow Kanji) are voiced by the same person. Thus the joke.
- Persona 4, forever in spin-off hell. ExplanationA common joke on how ATLUS keeps on making more spin-off content for Persona 4, causing many to say that Persona 4 will never die.
- Turning Shadows OffExplanationThe PC version of Persona 4 Golden includes a graphics option to turn off shadows. Since the enemies in the Persona games are called Shadows, people joked that turning this option off completes the game immediately
- Teddie likes ya cut, G. Explanation A Persona-themed take on the "I like ya cut, G" meme that has Shadow Teddie knock out the entire party with Nihil Hand. Of course, this being Nihil Hand, it can be easily guarded against, as you have a whole turn to have everyone guard against it before it hits.
- Vibin' Naoto Explanation In BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, chibi versions of the characters can dance in online lobbies. The fandom took a liking to a Chibi Naoto doing this dance while putting various songs over it. There's even an entire YouTube channel dedicated to just that.
- Great vegetables Explanation A line often spoken by Dojima whenever Yu harvests vegetables in Golden. It later became memetic among players of the game, especially when youtuber Joseph Anderson played the game and clips of him laughing whenever it was said circulated across the internet.
- Yu Narukami is king of swag.ExplanationThe King's Game scene from Persona 4: The Animation plays up how silly the scene is even more than the game. As opposed to only getting one choice, Yu gets all three ladies to cuddle up to him.
- > You opened the fridge. ExplanationAt home during nighttime, you can open the fridge to find and sometimes even eat some bizarre things in order to build up stats, up to and including eating Nanako's science project. The fandom latched on to the joke and variants of the "you opened the fridge" gag became common.
- TRUE!ExplanationA low quality picture of Adachi with the the word "TRUE!" underneath, alongside snowclones with other similiar statements. Usually used as a reaction image of an emote.
Persona 4: Dancing All Night
- Persona 4: Danced Crazy All Night!ExplanationUnsurprisingly, fans already related the new game to the "Mark danced crazy!" meme, and jokes about Mark being a secret character. Teddie himself references this when praising Kanji for a good performance. "Kanji danced crazy!"
- Persona 4: Danced Furiously All Night!ExplanationVariation of the above, but this time referencing Aleph from Shin Megami Tensei II.
- Persona 4: [Verbing] All [time of day].ExplanationAfter the announcement of a fighting, dungeon crawler, and dancing game, fans started joking about Atlus making P4 games for all genres, like kart racing, tabletop party, card game, cooking...
- "Unbelievable! Could you imagine the step? He's genius!"ExplanationThe first trailer's announcer is a Fountain of Memes for being a Gratuitous English spouting Large Ham, with this line being the most popular.
- Specialist Dance ExplanationThis dance routine became memetic after being used to illustrate any kind of personal celebration, be it ironic or trivial. The dance animations have since been used on other 3D character models with the help of MikuMikuDance.
- For the western side, characterizing Yu as using the game to celebrate his last outing before Persona 5 takes his game's place.
- Drawing the casts of other MegaTen games getting a Dancing All Night spinoff.
- Now that Persona 3 and Persona 5 have their own Dancing Night spinoffs, depicting their respective protagonists as either learning from Yu or not wanting to get in the spotlight for various reasons (Makoto's antisocial attitude, Joker not wanting to get caught, and Yu just being outright loopy to them). For that matter, drawing The Pierced Boy and Tatsuya as bitter that they didn't get to join them dancing.
- "Here's another one."note The opening line of the game's intro. It's like Atlus is acknowledging how many games they're producing for Persona 4.
- Yu's dance to the Reincarnation version of Specialist has become this as of 2020, usually with some ironic caption. The fact that Yu is wearing Cool Shades in the most popular iteration of the video, coupled with his bombastic dance moves, made this meme another instance of the "Chad Narukami" meme as well, with Yu often celebrating something he did with a dance.
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth
- THIS CAROUSEEEL!!!!! ExplanationGo to any Persona Q stream and see how many references to carousels are made due to the theme song.
- Shinji's right there, Akihiko. ExplanationAn extension of the "Didja see that Shinji" meme above, due to Shinjiro being playable alongside Akihiko again, a lot of commenters bring up the original line and give it a much less tragic context.
> You begin to suspect that this page is a portal to the Meme Dimension.
