Often grouped personality-wise with the
Troll, the Garbage Post Kid not only delights in posting offensive and inflammatory text, but also punctuates them with vomit-inducing pictures and links to
Shock Sites. These kinds of Internet riffraff usually have a
personal beef with a specific group member or community, and will constantly flood their topics with all the filth the 'net can offer to get back at them; if it's against a single person, they usually don't care about ruining the day (or constitution) of the dozens or hundreds of innocent posters on the board, so long as they make sure that one guy knows he can't run or hide from the troll.
Naturally, these are one of the more
egregious Internet offenders; sometimes, it can take hours for the mods to clean up the sewage the GPK leaves behind — sometimes requiring a temporary shut-down of the forum — and some of them are intent enough to not give up, and keep coming back for more as soon as they can. These guys can be very hard to shake.
Trope name comes from
Garbage Pail Kids, a 1980s trading card parody to the Cabbage Patch Kids that depicted truly disturbing imagery on them.
Examples:
- Overwhelmingly common at Imageboards, due to the fact that it's hard to browse the board at all without seeing them if they're posted. For instance, Fchan, a furry imageboard, is constantly under periodic attacks from 4Chan GPKs for some reason. Of course, 4channers are perfectly happy to turn their GPKs on each other.
- This Yu-Gi-Oh forum
came under fire from a GPK who had a mad-on against a moderator since before the mod even was a mod on the forum. His reign of terror lasted a full 24 hours, and after his crap was cleaned up, he retaliated by hacking into the forum and deleting everything.
- Five words: king at the sok factoree. The ultimate noob (in a certain forum). He's a legend, so much so as to the point where people who are outstandingly bad will be compared to him and other fora will be considered low-quality simply by letting his posts stand. Yeah. He's that bad.
- There is a forum for Nintendo Wi Fi gaming where the admin had severe depression that he had to offset with medication. Twice he deleted the forums and the mods and members had to bring it back. Then one day, a mod and a few other members came up with a plan to destroy the forums and blame it on the admin's depression, then relieve the forum under their control. They failed. The offenders were banned and never heard from again.
- Armored Core Online has suffered several such folk, and had to go offline to effect repairs after banning each. One such individual that immediately comes to mind was a friend(sp?) of an admin at a board where this troper was a mod. Said admin allowed said GPK to post after promising to clean up his act. Guess what happened next (sob).
- Following the change to 4E, the official Dungeons And Dragons boards became the target of several of these. Most notably, one degraded from making homophobic slurs to posting pictures of aborted fetuses as part of his vendetta against Wizards Of The Coast. Yeah. When you've degraded from homophobic slurs, you've pretty much reached rock bottom.
- Encyclopedia Dramatica is well-known for this. That's all that needs to be said about the site.
- Apparently, one of these is why the forums for Spiderweb Software no longer allow posting of images. The mods generally avoid any questions on the subject, but apparently the images in question were both pornographic and extremely disgusting.
