The Detective and Family

    Detective

The Detective

  • Action Girl: Can be this, if female and combat-oriented.
  • Amazon Chaser: If romancing Ava, they can find her strength very attractive.
  • Angst? What Angst?: May have this relationship to the events of Book One in Book Two. However, they can also become a Stepford Smiler or Stepford Snarker.
  • Badass Normal: They are very capable, even when compared to the supernatural. This is particularly notable if they specialize in combat, allowing them to hang with superhuman vampires and mind-controlled human thralls in hand-to-hand, earning the respect of their Unit Bravo bodyguards in the process, and making them the Unit's resident Team Normal. However, whether the detective counts as a true normal is debatable since their blood possesses a unique mutation which grants them resistances to certain supernatural forms of mental persuasion.
  • Blessed with Suck: They have a mutation in their blood that makes them immune to the influence of the supernatural, such as vampire's pheromones, but makes them a target, as it also means their blood gives the supernatural a power boost.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: Depending on the player's choices, can have this relationship with Rebecca.
  • Celibate Hero: They can deliberately avoid romance if the player chooses.
  • Character Customization: The detective's name, gender, sexuality, various physical descriptors (e.g. eye colour, hair colour and length, height, etc.), personality, and skills can all be determined by the player.
  • The Charmer: Potentially, if they have a high charm stat.
  • Chick Magnet: All members of female Unit Bravo can show interest in them, plus Tamiko of Unit Alpha. They can also have tension with their possible-ex Bobby.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: A downplayed version of this trope is present in the detective's relationship with Rebecca. However, can be deconstructed depending the player's choices.
  • Deadpan Snarker: There are plenty of snarky dialogue options the player can choose.
  • Disappeared Dad: No mention is made of their father in Book One. In Book Two, it's revealed that he died when they were only two.
  • Dude Magnet: If you choose male love interests, for the same reasons as Chick Magnet. In addition, Douglas can develop a crush on a female detective if she saves him from Murphy's thralls in Book One, and Falk, the leader of the maa-alused, can develop feelings for them by the end of Book Two based on the player's choices regardless of the detective's gender. Many of the male members of Unit Alpha are also interested.
  • Generation Xerox: Unbeknownst to them until Book Two, their father was also the human liaison to Wayhaven before his death.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Their first and last names can be chosen from a list of presets, or written in if you so choose.
  • Lead Police Detective: The detective is, obviously, promoted to this at the very beginning of Book One.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: For much of Book One, they are kept in the dark about the existence of the supernatural, and the true purpose of the Agency and their own blood.
  • No-Sell: The mutation in their blood makes them immune to supernatural influences.
  • No Social Skills: They can be played as this, if the player chooses the difficult and impulsive or shy and withdrawn options.
  • Oblivious to Love: The player can willingly ignore romantic hints from the NPCs, thus making them this.
  • The Power of Blood: They have a mutation in their blood which both gives them the power of immunity to non-physical supernatural abilities, and it can also potentially serve as a power boost for supernaturals who imbibe it.
  • Purely Aesthetic Gender: The detective can be male, female, or nonbinary, but beyond what pronouns are used it changes nothing.
  • Recurring Dreams: In Book Two, the detective has periodic nightmares about what Murphy did to them in Book One.
  • Science Hero: Can be this, if science/technology-oriented.
  • The Stoic: A detective with a high stoic stat would qualify.
  • Statuesque Stunner: If you pick the "Tall" or "Extremely Tall" for height.
  • Supernaturally Delicious and Nutritious: The detective's blood is described as smelling intoxicating and extra tasty. This is made worse by the fact that the supernatural who partakes gains a massive temporary power boost, the effects of which can last anywhere from a few seconds to minutes or more depending on how much blood is consumed. At the end of Book One, it is revealed that the small town of Wayhaven is on its way towards becoming a supernatural hub due to all the gossip about a particular human with power-up blood.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Can be this, if a male detective and dark hair is selected in Book One, and either Tall (6'1" or below) or Really Tall (6'2" or above) is the selected height in Book Two. Slightly lampshaded by M and Bobby, if romantically tied to either, as both call a male detective "handsome".
  • The Team Normal: Of Unit Bravo, which is otherwise comprised entirely of vampires.
  • Trash of the Titans: One of the options for the detective's apartment decor is that it's extremely messy, a fact which is commented on a number of times both by various characters and the detective's internal narration.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Had this relationship with Rebecca in the past, depending on the player's choices.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Downplayed. All clothing options for the detective are available to all genders, including dresses and skirts, giving the detective the option to be this.

    Rebecca

Agent Rebecca

  • Action Mom: While usually a handler and not taking to the field to herself, when Murphy's thralls break into her child's apartment she is shown to able to put up a fight.
  • Benevolent Boss: Treats Unit Bravo fairly.
  • Consummate Professional: She takes her job very seriously and is bemused by some of the snark and less-serious attitudes she receives from those she works with.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Her last name is whatever you chose for the detective.
  • It's Personal: The mission against Murphy becomes this when his next target is her child.
  • Give Him a Normal Life: Doesn't want her child to be caught up in the supernatural world, thinking it best that they have a normal life.
  • Lost Lenore: Deeply grieves her lost husband.
  • Mama Bear: She is willing to do anything to protect her child.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: She gives Unit Bravo a syringe of concentrated DMB to use against Murphy when the detective is captured, even though that is not exactly sanctioned by the Agency.
Rebecca: I don't care about the rules! I care about my child.
  • Undying Loyalty: Has a lot of faith in the Agency and what they do, to the point of being confused and disbelieving at prospects such as the Agency potentially having a leak. Although, in the case of her child being in danger, she is wiling to break their rules.
  • Unreliable Expositor: If asked about how Rook died, she says she doesn't have the clearance to know exactly what happened. Book 3, however, reveals that she was once part of the highest-ranking body in the Agency and only stepped down after Rook's death, which she's clearly uncomfortable with you knowing.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Rebecca was absent for large portions of the detective's childhood due to work. If the detective has a strained relationship with her, this is one of the major reasons why (and even if the detective has a good relationship, the implication is that they still struggled and were often unhappy due to her being away so much).

    Detective's Father

Detective's Father / Rook

  • Action Dad: Was this before his death when the detective was two years old.
  • All-Loving Hero: A criticism that the Trappers can throw at the Detective in reference to their father, saying that they inherited "his love for monsters." Rebecca can also confirm that he protected everyone, no matter what they were.
  • The Charmer: Rebecca can confirm this to be a trait that their child shares with him, depending on the detective's personality stats.
  • The Heart: Depending on the stats of the detective, Rebecca can tell them that having a "heart" is one thing she can say they had in common with their dad.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: How he actually died. Rebecca says she doesn't know the specifics, other than that he was protecting a group of supernatural hostages.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Most people who know him refer to him only as "Rook."
  • Posthumous Character: He died when the detective was only two.

Unit Bravo

    In General
  • Boy Meets Ghoul: Since all of the potential romances in the game are between a human and a vampire, this trope applies.
  • Everyone Is Bi: All of them can be romanced regardless of either their or the detective's respective genders.
  • Family of Choice: How they all feel about each other, with F in particular explicitly referring to them all as "family" in Book Two, to the agreement of the others.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Sort of. The detective doesn't forget their first meeting with Unit Bravo, they just don't realize that they were the strangers at the warehouse. F gleefully reminds them.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Phlegmatic: N.
    • Sanguine: F.
    • Choleric: A.
    • Melancholic: M.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: The detective's friendship with any of the vampires would qualify as this, since they are at least decades older than the detective's mother. The friendships between the members of Unit Bravo may also qualify as this since their ages are currently unknown.
  • Interspecies Friendship/Interspecies Romance: The detective's friendships and romances with the members of Unit Bravo are technically this (though all of them except F were once human).
  • Mayfly–December Friendship: Regardless of who (if anyone) the detective romances, this applies to their relationships with the members of Unit Bravo in general as they become closer to them as the story progresses.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: The detective with any of their possible romances. All of the members of Unit Bravo are immortal unless killed, and will almost certainly outlive the detective.
  • No Social Skills: The only one on the team with functional social skills is N. A can't work with others outside of their team, and immediately butts heads with the detective, M dislikes people in general, and is generally rude to anyone but their teammates, and F just blurts out whatever is on their mind, regardless of whether or not it's appropriate.
  • One Head Taller: Possible for any of them with the detective, and likely with N or A (who are both quite tall) or F (who is quite short).
  • Purely Aesthetic Gender: Unit Bravo can be either all female, all male, or half female and half male, depending on what your detective's sexuality and gender are. This has very little effect besides names, pronouns, and basic physical descriptions.
  • Was Once a Man: With the exception of F, they were all once humans before becoming vampires.

    Ava/Adam

Commanding Agent Ava/Adam du Mortain

  • A Father to His Men: Very protective of all the members of Unit Bravo.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Ava is tall and very muscular, and described as being attractive.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Their anger at the detective is due to the fact that they are trying to protect the detective. This is particularly true of a romanced A.
A: Why can't [the detective] stay put for more than two minutes?
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Their dynamic with a detective romancing them can often fall into this, due to butting heads over things like differing leadership methods or A's refusal to acknowledge their own romantic feelings.
  • Betty and Veronica: The Veronica to N's Betty in the love triangle route.
  • Competition Freak: Very competitive, whether it comes to Unit Bravo's rank in the Agency or other smaller things.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Their romance path involves this.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: In both their solo romance path and the love triangle route, especially in Book Two, they have a tendency to unintentionally break things due to being distracted by the detective.
F: So, is this gonna be a thing? Breaking our detective's stuff until they notice you?
  • Everyone Can See It: In their route in Book Two, A is for the most part very much in denial about their feelings for the detective, but everyone else picks up on it.
  • First Girl Wins: If romanced, they're this or First Guy. While you technically meet all four at the same time, they are the one most focused on during the warehouse encounter (since they're the one you potentially shoot) and they have the first interaction with the detective outside of introductions.
  • Flower Motifs: Picks a hyacinth outside of Sanja's tent, fitting for their commitment to the detective and Unit Bravo, as well as their sorrow and regret over their past.
  • A Glass in the Hand: If a detective on A's romance path mentions that Bobby is their ex, A will break a table.
  • Inconvenient Attraction: They definitely consider their feelings for the detective to be this.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In the love triangle route, they pick up on the detective and N's mutual feelings (notably, N doesn't do the reverse), and, despite having mutual feelings for the detective as well, they try to distance themself because they don't want to get in the way of the detective or N's happiness.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: They tend to come off as extremely pragmatic, blunt, and abrasive, but they do genuinely care about their teammates (and eventually the detective), and they are ultimately trying to protect people.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: They were born in the 1100's as the child of a Norman invader in England, and in their mirror memory in Book Two they're seen fighting in full plate armour.
  • The Leader: They're the leader of Unit Bravo.
  • Not So Stoic: They are rather stoic, but this changes a few times, most notably when the detective is bleeding out after the fight with Murphy.
  • The Older Immortal: They're over 900 years old, which is nearly three times the age of the next oldest member of Unit Bravo.
  • Serious Business: If they go to the carnival stalls in Book Two, fishing for plastic ducks becomes this.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Ava is 5'8".
  • The Stoic: They prefer not to show or act on their emotions, a preference that gets sorely tested if romanced.
  • Super-Strength: All vampires have strength well beyond a human, but A is especially strong even for a vampire.
  • Team Dad: They're the leader of Unit Bravo, and, while they project a stoic and commanding demeanor, they do care greatly about the other members of the team and are very protective of them.

    Nat/Nate

Agent Natalie "Nat"/Nathaniel "Nate" Sewell

  • Aliens Love Human Food: Has no need for human food as a vampire, but while other vampires can find human food too overwhelming, N expresses an enjoyment of eating it.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Described as having "tawny-coloured skin".
  • Badass Bookworm: Adores their books and being able to learn, along with being a member of an elite agency unit.
  • Betty and Veronica: The Betty to A's Veronica in the love triangle route.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: N may be kind and gentle, but they are still a centuries-old vampire secret agent.
  • The Charmer: They certainly know how to turn on the charm, which is shown most clearly if romanced.
  • Cultured Badass: Regardless of their gender, N proves to be this.
  • Flower Motifs: If the detective chooses to go to the fortune teller with them, they "pay" with a pink tulip. This suits N's kind, affectionate nature, as well as their implicitly traumatic rebirth into a vampire.
  • Friend to All Children: Very friendly and good with Verda's children if they get to meet them.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: Nate is this—he's sociable, polite to a fault and prefers an intellectual battle to a physical one. He's still frighteningly competent at hand to hand combat, though.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Their reaction to seeing a dog in Book One is to immediately make kissy faces at it.
  • Hopeless with Tech: They are a Type 2. They aren't completely hopeless, but it takes them several minutes to work their voicemail.
  • Nice Guy: They're the most genuinely nice person on the team, and are frequently the one to handle social situations and defuse them if they get tense.
  • Number Two: They're A's second in command.
  • Omniglot: They don't know all languages, but they do know a lot of them.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: They're almost always referred to by the shortened version of their name (Nat if female, Nate if male).
  • Relationship Upgrade: The detective can officially begin a relationship with them at the end of Book Two.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Nat is rather polite, refined, and cultured, and prefers to avoid violence if possible. This does not stop her from being scarily competent in a fight.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Nat is 6'0".
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: They're very tall, have dark hair, and are described as being attractive.
  • Team Mom: They're the most caring and responsible of the team, and help balance out A's commanding and standoffish style of leadership.
  • Technophobia: Is uncomfortable in the detective's apartment if it's filled with technology. They do not want technology in their library, either.

    Farah/Felix

Agent Farah/Felix Hauville

  • Alien Among Us: They are originally from the Echo World, but became trapped in our world like many others.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: They're the youngest member of Unit Bravo, and they have this dynamic with the others.
  • Bad Liar: They frequently slip up about the team's true nature in front of the detective.
N: 'Not many humans,' really? With all the slipups you make, you're lucky people don't believe in vampires!
  • The Charmer: Can be this when they want to, such as with their office introduction to the detective.
  • Flower Motifs: The only member of the team to avert this—if the detective goes to the fortune teller with them, they pick a sprig of ivy rather than a flower. This serves to highlight their status as the only member of the team who was not human at any point. Ivy also symbolizes fidelity and strong affectionate attachment, suiting the fact that they're the first member of Unit Bravo the player can enter an official relationship with.
  • The Gadfly: They love trying to get a rise out of their teammates, especially the more stoic ones.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Does want a home, and gets excited when Unit Bravo finally get one in Book Two.
    • Expresses a very sincere gratitude if the detective gives them a gift at the carnival, explaining how nobody had given them one that wasn't in exchange for something before.
  • I Kiss Your Hand: Farah greets a female detective this way, and Felix kisses their hand regardless of detective's gender (a male detective gets a kiss on the cheek from Farah instead). At the end of Book One, a romanced F kisses the detective's hand again when bidding them farewell in the hospital. (In some cases, F gives them kiss on the cheek instead.)
  • Rags to Riches: Not literal riches, but F is in a much better position now than they were in their memory seen in the mirror in Book Two, which shows them wearing nothing but damaged hides and rags in the Echo World.
  • Relationship Upgrade: The detective can officially begin a relationship with them midway through Book Two.
  • Shipper on Deck: They support the various romances between their teammates and the detective, albeit with lots of teasing.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: They have golden amber eyes, and are the only member of Unit Bravo to come from the Echo World.
  • The World Is Just Awesome: F enjoys experiencing all of the things this world has to offer, exemplified by their reactions to things like the carnival and its contents.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: They're originally from the Echo World, and are now stuck in our world. In Book Two, if the detective asks them if they miss their world, they say they don't.

    Morgan/Mason

Specialist Agent Morgan/Mason

  • Affectionate Nickname: If romanced, they often call the detective "sweetheart" if female or "handsome" if male.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Described as having freckled "deep tan skin".
  • Amnesiac Hero: They don't remember quite a lot of their past, including their last name. It's also implied that this amnesia is maintained by the Agency because they're potentially dangerous with their full memory.
  • Cold Gray Eyes: They have gray eyes, and are the least approachable member of Unit Bravo, possibly excluding A.
  • The Casanova: Has a history of numerous one night stands.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Prefers to be sarcastic a lot of the time.
  • Everyone Can See It: Falls in love with the detective and remains blissfully unaware of that fact. The same cannot be said for the rest of anyone else (except for the detective).
  • Flower Motif: Picks a poppy outside of Sanja's tent in Book Two. This suits their hedonistic nature, and serves as an ironic nod to their amnesia regarding their past.
  • Gorgeous Greek: They're revealed in Book Two to be Greek, and are described as being very attractive.
  • Jerkass: They're the most overall unfriendly member of the team.
  • The Lad-ette: Morgan is snarky and crude, smokes frequently, and, if romanced, mostly just wants to get into the detective's pants.
  • Ladykiller in Love: Unwittingly becomes this if romanced.
  • Nature Lover: Enjoys being outside in the calmer nature more than most other environments.
  • Not So Stoic: They are rather stoic, but there are a few exceptions, most notably when the detective is bleeding out after the fight with Murphy at the end of Book One.
  • Only One Name: If they have a last name, nobody knows it. Not even them.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • If the detective has high approval with them, they'll hold a branch back to let them pass at one point in Book One (otherwise they just let it hit the detective in the face).
    • In Book Two, they will agree to put out their cigarette if the detective asks with high enough approval, something that they notably refuse to do early in Book One.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Their most common expression is a scowl.
  • Sensory Abuse: The downside of M having good senses even for a vampire is that the drawbacks are also much worse. What causes the rest of the unit mild discomfort is almost unbearable for them.
  • Smoking Is Cool: They smoke frequently. It helps them manage their hypersenses, and keep them from overwhelming them.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: They're tall, have a dark aesthetic, and snark a lot.
  • Unscrupulous Hero: Evident early on in their first encounter with the detective, when they recommend knocking an unintentional witness out.
  • Weakness Turns Her On: If romanced, Morgan’s interest in a male detective is initially driven by the Temperament variety of this trope if the detective reacts shyly to her aggressive flirtations.
Detective: You… you should stop teasing me so much.
Morgan: [snickers] Why? I like how you react.
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: The detective has a hard time determining their accent compared to the rest of the squad. Turns out it's Greek.

Wayhaven Residents

    Bobby

Roberta/Robert "Bobby" Marks

  • Abhorrent Admirer: If they're the detective's ex (or even if they're not, in some cases) they're shown to still have feelings for them, while the detective does not like them anymore. In Book Two, depending on the player's choices, Bobby might kiss the detective, and the way the kiss is described (especially in comparison to those with the ROs) makes it very clear that it's not supposed to be something the detective wants or enjoys.
  • Affectionate Nickname: If they're the detective's ex, they call the detective "angel" if female or "handsome" if male.
  • All Take and No Give: If they are the detective's ex-lover or ex-friend, this was how their former relationship with them was.
  • Determinator: Will not give up in trying to get what they want, whether it's in regards to their interactions with the detective or their career.
  • Exact Words: In Book One, if the detective stays at the office instead of going out to the bar with Unit Bravo, Bobby will tell the detective they have "come to bug you." The detective assumes they mean they are here to bother them; Bobby quite literally plants a bug in their office.
  • False Friend: They can act friendly to the detective, but usually have some ulterior motive for doing so.
  • Hidden Depths: While Bobby is in general a committed sleaze who lies to get more readers and harasses the detective, there is some genuine emotion in there. Deep, deep, deep down. As Bobby is a potential target for the maa-alused, they must actually feel guilty about something (the maa-alused curse people based on the emotion of guilt, not a legal idea). They will also sincerely thank the detective for saving their life.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Constantly out looking for information to report, with it being remarked that they have managed to get sources in a lot of places, such as them discovering an outbreak at the local hospital in Book Two.
  • It's All About Me: Determined to get their story, even to the detriment of people around them.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Everyone calls them Bobby.
  • Purely Aesthetic Gender: They can be either male or female, but it doesn't change anything beyond pronouns and some descriptors.
  • Static Role, Exchangeable Character: With Douglas, depending on if the detective goes to the bar with Tina or stays in the office by themself in Book One.
  • Tomboyish Name: If female.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Possibly how the detective feels about them.

    Tina

Officer Tina Poname

  • Eating the Eye Candy: Near the beginning of Book Two, the detective finds her hanging out outside the precinct, admiring the firefighters washing their truck across the street. She also comments multiple times on how it'll be nice to have Unit Bravo hanging around the precinct because of how easy on the eyes they are.
  • Just Friends: During the prologue, the detective can muse about how they might've made a move on her a long time ago, but they're happier being friends.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: She doesn't know about the supernatural world that the detective becomes swept up in. This can change in Book Two, depending on the player's choices, though it can also be further enforced. In contrast to Verda, Tina reacts to this revelation in a very positive and excited manner.
  • Positive Friend Influence: Tries to be this for the detective. If the detective phones her and confesses that Bobby is in their apartment in Book Two, she calls them out on how bad of an idea this would be for them.
  • Shipper on Deck: She encourages the detective to pursue a romance with Unit Bravo throughout the game.
  • Static Role, Exchangeable Character: With Verda, depending on who the detective talks to about their budding realization of the supernatural in Book Two.
  • Sweet Tooth: Very fond of sugar.

    Douglas

Officer Douglas Friedman

  • Abusive Parents: Comments made in Book Two suggest that the mayor is emotionally abusive as a father.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: A large part of the reason he latches onto the detective to such a degree if they save him from Murphy's thralls in Book One is that his family doesn't seem to really care about him — if he's the one who is inflicted with the supernatural disease in Book Two, they hardly seem to notice that anything happened to him — and the detective has shown very clearly that they value his life.
  • Hero-Worshipper: If the detective goes the bar with Unit Bravo instead of staying in the office, they end up saving him from Murphy's thralls, which causes him to develop a large case of hero-worship for them.
  • Hopeless Suitor: If a female detective saves him from Murphy's thralls in Book One, he develops an enormous crush on her, and can't seem to take a hint that she isn't interested. If the detective is romancing one of Unit Bravo, he'll even start trying to dress like them.
  • The Slacker: He can be caught goofing off on his phone when he's supposed to be working on multiple occasions. He starts getting his act together if the detective saves him from Murphy's thralls at the bar, however.
  • Static Role, Exchangeable Character: With Bobby, depending on if the detective goes to the bar with Tina or stays in the office by themself in Book One.

    Verda

Dr. Solomon Verda

  • Affectionate Nickname: His husband Eric calls him "Sol."
  • Autopsy Snack Time: Will bring drinks into his lab and has one when autopsying a dead body. He admits to knowing he shouldn't.
  • Fantastic Racism: Hinted at, if he finds out that Unit Bravo are vampires are in Book Two. He hesitates before referring to them as "people."
  • Happily Married: He has a husband and kids.
  • Interspecies Romance: Though an instance where Verda is completely unaware of it. His husband Eric is a supernatural being and has hidden it from Verda all along. This becomes an issue if Verda learns about the supernatural in book 2, by book 3 he has become a very nervous wreck about what dangerous beings could be out there, and Eric is terrified that Verda learning the truth about him would destroy their relationship.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He doesn't know about the supernatural world that the detective becomes swept up in. This can change in Book Two, depending on the player's choices, though it can also be further enforced. In contrast to Tina, Verda takes his potential discovery of the supernatural very badly, and becomes terrified for the safety of himself and his family, to the point of planning to move away from Wayhaven.
    • A new wrinkle is added in book 3 with the reveal that his husband Eric is actually a supernatural being as well, something Verda never knew. Realizing that Verda has found out about the supernatural world and is very on edge about it, Eric is scared that their relationship will collapse when Verda finds out exactly what Eric is.
  • Papa Wolf: Cares strongly about his children and can worry about their safety, which is why he moved from the city to the smaller, safer Wayhaven.
  • Only Sane Man: Depending on the personality of the detective, he can be this to them and Tina.
  • Science Hero: Is the one who finds anomalies with the victims' blood in Book One, and, if the treaty with the maa-alused in Book Two fails, it's him who develops a cure to save those afflicted with the disease.
  • Static Role, Exchangeable Character: With Tina, depending on who the detective talks to about their budding realization of the supernatural in Book Two.

The Agency

    Elidor

Elidor

  • Combat Medic: Elidor works as a nurse within the Agency, but he can fight if a situation calls for it, such as stepping in when he catches Trappers attacking the Detective near the end of Book Two.
  • The Fair Folk: Is a fairy.
  • Gentle Giant: He's very big and muscular, but also very friendly.

    Unit Alpha

Unit Alpha

  • Fur Against Fang: They're werewolves, and they have an ongoing rivalry with Unit Bravo, who are vampires, due in part to this—although A will insist that their problem is with Unit Alpha specifically and that they are fine with other werewolves.
  • The Gadfly: Apart from team leader Lesedi, the team members all enjoy teasing Unit Bravo as soon as they encounter them.
  • Meaningful Name: The detective can jokingly ask if they're called Unit Alpha because they're werewolves. It's actually because they're the highest ranking unit, however.
  • The Nose Knows: The brothers almost immediately pick up on the unique scent that the detective has due to the mutation in their blood.
  • Sibling Team: Tane and Maaka are brothers.

Unaligned Supernaturals

    Sanja

Sanja

  • Damsel in Distress: She gets captured by Trappers in Book Two, and the detective and Unit Bravo attempt to rescue her.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: If she is killed by the Trappers because the detective went to their love interest's rescue instead of hers, her expression is described as looking betrayed.
  • Flower Motif: Donating a flower is the way to gain access to her tent for a reading.
  • Fortune Teller: Her role in the carnival, and backed up by real supernatural predictions.
  • The Heart: Described by Falk as being this for the maa-alused.
  • The Leader: In a sense; while Falk is the official figurehead and leader, Sanja also says that the maa-alused will come to her when she needs them. She is also looked to by them for advice.
  • Only Sane Man: Is the one to argue to the maa-alused that they should consider the deal the Agency has presented to them, saying that their lifestyle may not be maintainable in the modern era and that that perhaps they should change.
  • Sadistic Choice: In Book Two, the detective has to choose between saving her or their love interest from the Trappers.

Antagonists

    Murphy

Dr. Ethan Murphy

  • Big Bad: Of Book One.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: He kills (later revealed to have actually just made him into a thrall) the real Dr. Ethan Murphy in the prologue, and takes over his identity.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He's unfailingly polite, even as he tries to kidnap the detective and kill their friends, and it just makes him seem more sinister.
  • Lack of Empathy: If confronted about his murders, he does not understand why he should see them as wrong.
  • Mad Scientist: Many of his worst activities involve experimentation on victims.
  • Serial Killer: He's been tracking down and killing people who have the same blood mutation as the detective all over the world. The deaths of these specific victims is largely accidental, however; he wants them alive for a supply of their special blood. Unfortunately, all but one of his experiments on them are unsuccessful and result in their deaths.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He drains all of Garret Hayes' blood and leaves his body in a deliberately bad state to be found.

    Falk

Falk

  • Anti-Villain: While he serves as the main antagonist of Book Two, he and the other maa-alused don't have bad intentions, but due to in-universe Values Dissonance their actions end up causing a lot of harm.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Has set values about justice and what's right and wrong that don't match with the typical view of it.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: The maa-alused take it upon themselves to judge people for their past actions, but they determine who deserves punishment based on whether the person feels guilt, not on the nature or severity of their actual actions. If the detective points out that people feel bad about things that aren't their fault all the time, Falk appears not to get what they're trying to say.
  • Fighting for a Homeland: A new home, safely away from humans, is the key want he has for his people when negotiating the treaty with the Agency.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Depending on how the detective interacts with him, he and the other maa-alused can end up forming a treaty with the Agency and curing the disease they caused.
  • The Leader: The figurehead of the maa-alused who run the carnival.
  • Mirror Monster: He has the ability to travel through mirrors, and he first appears to the detective from a mirror in the hall of mirrors at the carnival.
  • Villainous Crush: Depending on the choices of the detective and how their interactions go, he can develop an attraction towards them. Subverted if the maa-alused join the Agency, but upheld if they instead go with the rogue supernaturals.

    Trappers

Trappers

  • Fantastic Racism: Some display this against supernaturals in what they do, but others are more in it for the market there is for supernaturals and their parts.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Powerful supernatural individuals worry about Trappers and what they do.
  • Hunter of Monsters: They hunt supernaturals. However, in a twist of the typical usage of this trope, they do it so that they can sell them for parts to the highest bidder.
  • Only in It for the Money: Their motivation for selling supernatural body parts to the highest bidder.
  • Van Helsing Hate Crimes: At best, Trappers don't see supernaturals as people, rather resources to be exploited. At worst, they have a distinct hatred for supernaturals and actively want to kill them.
