Main Characters

     Go Ha Jin/Hae Soo
Portrayed by: Lee Ji-eun (IU)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0f08c49dd50f0f3cb4d566040bcec09a69e2303a7f9b8124fb11f2c2319061a1d1cee45f6519e9b904b7201cb7581d74f1f7dbfe6093db8e926e1320f2cf5a0e45e9d887ef5476ebd9833893ac2f570a3097c536d66f0d63ec8282b050828f99eba280487f509cc6c9ca922eaafb7112_19.jpg

Go Ha Jin is a 25-year-old woman that drowned while saving a child and this somehow led to her soul being transported to the body of 16-year-old Hae Soo in 941, Goryeo.

  • Break the Cutie: She was hit with this hard. She starts as an optimistic, energetic and happy-go-lucky girl but because of her close relationship with the princes, she ends up getting involved in the tumultuous fight for the throne and suffers the consequences of it more than once.
  • Broken Bird: By the end. She no longer hopes for a truly happy ending for herself and is afraid that her daughter could somehow end up trapped like she was.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Her relationship with Wang So.
  • The Cutie: Easily one of the most beloved characters.
  • Delicate and Sickly: It's implied that Hae Soo had a heart disease since young and while it wouldn't have been a problem, the harshness of the palace life, the torture she went through and the upsetting revelations she received throughout the years worsened her condition considerably
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Passes away in Wang Jung's.
  • The First Cut Is the Deepest: While she was Ha Jin, she was cheated on by her boyfriend with one of her best friends, leading her to be quite adamant about trust in a relationship. When she was Hae Soo, she fell for the 8th prince, Wang Wook and was quick to trust him, kind of forgetting about her previous experience. However, whenever she truly needs his help and support, he constantly lets her down, which makes her insecurities flare up again and end up affecting her growing relationship with Wang So negatively.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Ha Jin lived in 2016 and was transported somehow to 941, so some of her ideas, as well as her personality, contrasted sharply with what was considered appropriate.
  • The Hero Dies: Succumbs to her illness in the Grand Finale.
  • The Ingenue: At the beginning, she truly believed that she could have a happy existence with the people she loved and that their greed for the throne could disappear. It didn't.
  • Last Request: That her daughter won't get trapped in the palace the same way she did
  • Like Brother and Sister: How she views her relationships with the 10th, 13th and 14th princes. Unfortunately, only the 13th prince saw her that way, the other two didn't.
  • Morality Pet: She's one of the few who can reign in and soothe So's anger, as well as bring out his gentler side.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: So was never with her when she dies.
  • Past-Life Memories: In the Grand Finale, Ha Jin is able to regain her memories as Hae Soo.
  • Plucky Girl: Even though by the end she becomes tired and jaded she still has her optimism as well as hope that she can make it through the rough patches and be happy somehow.
  • Purity Personified: Honestly wishes to help the people around her as well as keep them happy. Many of the princes see her as a breath of fresh air or a ray of light in their existence.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: The only thing she wished for was a peaceful life surrounded by the ones she loved but the cruelty of reality and the heartache she suffered took such a toll on her body that she died at a young age.
  • Trapped in the Past: She's from the 21st century but was stuck on the 10th for much of the series' run.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Two instances
    • Had she not helped So by covering his scar with the makeup she created, then he wouldn't have participated in the ritual and he wouldn't have gained enough popularity with the people to be considered a threat by his brothers.
    • Had she not warned Wook of how dangerous So was and how he would most likely become king by force, then the rivalry and tension amongst the brothers would not have escalated to the point where they actively tried to kill each other
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: She believes that she could convince the princes to stop their in-fighting and that they could all live in harmony
  • You Already Changed the Past: She receives glimpses of the future, in addition to remembering her history lessons, and thinks she can prevent the heartbreak from taking place but not realising until almost the end that she's actually the one that (unknowingly) helped history to happen the way it did.

     Wang So
Portrayed by: Lee Joon-gi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/03c097fd271f0e10e353c85667204d3e281ff0153d1ede1d194b388922ada591d59e80fd9c07a9867c0680edb60ea8b7e2310ad4643842986933b57130847bc5b2c92f23eef1e921a9d6f30834c37f14beeaba2d6cedd25bb22c157e93a61ae58cdd23bc55c1d99dbab6c7c486300c15.jpg

The 4th prince, son of King Taejo from Queen Yoo. His face got marred by his mother when he was a child, leading him to permanently wear a mask to hide it and become ostracized and repudiated by society.

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Was lucky enough to develop this under the care of the General.
  • Animal Motif: He is always compared to a wolf.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: A surefire way to gain his loyalty.
  • Berserk Button: Do not look at his scar or even say anything about it.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: His relationship with Hae Soo
  • Byronic Hero: He the resident Troubled, but Cute prince, with a lot of mommy issues. Is intelligent, cunning, jaded but also hostile and obsessive. He is desperately possessive of Hae Soo.
  • Dramatic Unmask: He finally removes the eye-obscuring mask he is always seen wearing upon Wang Eun's request as his birthday gift from So.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: And how. He gets easily attached to whoever treats him decently. Granted, many of his family members and almost the entire country view and treat him as the lowest of scum or are actively terrified by him.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After years and years of being pushed around and abused, he decides to take a stand and overthrow his older brother, Yo, and take the throne
  • The Dreaded: At the beginning, any mention of So was met with fear-filled comments over how he resembles a savage or an animal. It even comes to a point where a group of bandits who had cornered Jung, Hae Soo and Wook, promptly escape when they see him arrive, even though they outnumbered him, due to being terrified of him.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Years before the start of the main story, his mother lost a baby, leaving her devastated. Unfortunately, at that time there was trouble brewing at the borders and the King, in an effort to prevent bloodshed, decided to marry another lady to have her clan help in his cause. This, combined with her recent loss, pushed Queen Yoo to the edge and threatened to take her life along with Wang So's, who was a small child. The King managed to wrestle the knife away from her but in the struggle they hurt their son, leaving him scarred.
  • Four Is Death: He is the 4th prince and the 4th prince in the story plus a majority of people treat him as a bad omen.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: After he's formally received in the palace, he uses clothes that are more elegant and has a more princely appearance in general, something that Hae Soo notices and praises.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: The male lead is known for his swordsmanship.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers one after fulfilling his younger brother's request and despair.
  • Hidden Depths: Many believe that he's a savage or an animal, calling him a wolf-dog. However, he shows time and again that he's quite intelligent, making a genuine effort in learning and is actually rather gentle. Granted, he reserves that side to the people that showed him kindness without expecting anything in return.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: He uses his fringe along with a half-mask to hide the scar on the left side of his face.
  • Informed Deformity: An expected consequence the scar on his face has left him with as he is forever treated as a hideous being because of it.
  • Kick the Dog: Several of the interactions he has with his brothers, especially Wang Yo, and his mother tend to go this way. Whenever he lets himself believe that he will finally be accepted, something happens that destroys that hope.
  • Loners Are Freaks: He mostly keeps to himself and is treated by many as a pariah.
  • Masking the Deformity: Wang So wears a metal quarter-mask (covering the top right quarter of his face, unlike Dr. Poison's bottom right quarter) to hide the... comically minor cut scars his Queen Yoo gave him under his eye.
  • Mommy Issues: So freaking many. Several of his actions in the series are fuelled by his desire of having his mom just once acknowledge him positively. He had more than one opportunity, in the beginning, to sell her out and instead he cleaned up after her, protecting her schemes, only for her to reject and humiliate him. It's no wonder that when Soo showed him an inkling of positive attention he got attached so fast and hard.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: He was never with So when she dies, much to his regret.
  • No Social Skills: Thanks to the fact that he was practically abandoned in the wild by the family that adopted him after the incident that scarred him, he tends to use violence as a suitable response to almost any given situation. He manages to somewhat grow out of it as the story progresses but there are still instances where he shows that side, like when he told Hae Soo he was willing to kill the man she was interested in, if it meant she would stay by his side.
  • Parental Abandonment / Parental Neglect: His mom does not care about him and the family that adopted him abandoned him in the wild... he really has it hard.
  • The Promise: Because he didn't prepare a gift for Eun on his birthday, he promised him that he would give him anything he asked for. This comes in play two times and both times it doesn't end well.
  • Scars Are Forever: Played straight but with a little twist. He has a permanent scar on his left eye which forced him to wear a mask all the time to hide it and it is basically the cause of all of his angst. However, with Hae Soo's help and skills, he gets it covered up with makeup and appear presentable and less scary to the public.
  • Taking the Bullet: Well, more like drinking the poison. One of his mother's schemes involved poisoned tea served to the Crown Prince, Wang Moo, by Court Lady Hae Soo. Wang So drank the tea in order to spare both his brother and his love. Unfortunately, it doesn't work as he wanted
  • Undying Loyalty: To anyone who shows him genuine kindness and love. The list is... unfortunately short.
  • The Unfavorite: Painfully so, his mother never hid the fact that out of her 3 children, he was the one she cares for the least, even stating more than once that she hates him.
  • Warrior Prince: Under the care of the General, he becomes an adept fighter as well as a strategist on top of being a member of the Royal Family.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: With both his father and, especially, his mother. He tries really hard to be of use and have them acknowledge him but his efforts more often than not are met with indifference or disdain.

     Wang Wook

The 8th prince. Son of King Taejo with Queen Hwangbo, full brother of princess Yeon Hwa. He was married to Lady Hae, Soo's cousin.

The Royal Family

     Wang Mu
Portrayed by: Kim San-ho
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wang_mu.jpg

The Crown Prince. Born before the creation of Goryeo, he was King Taejo's first son.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Seeing as he was the oldest of the princes, he tried to help or guide them.
  • Driven to Madness: Wook and Won poisoned the waters in which he bathe with mercury and as his body grew sicker, they also began to feed his paranoia and fear
  • Nice Guy: Even though he knows many of his family members don't want to see him on the throne, that doesn't stop him from being fair to everyone and worry about others
  • Nice to the Waiter: He treats everyone kindly, including those that are of lower status.
  • Sibling Rivalry: With Yo. He's the one that shows the most hostility against him but Moo tries his best to not let Yo rile him up.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He's the tallest prince at 6'2 and is just as good looking as the rest of them.
  • Warrior Prince: Though not as skilled as Wang So, he's a good fighter and had been sent to military campaigns by his father.
  • You Are in Command Now: Succeeds his father as King after the latter's death.

     Wang Yo
Portrayed by: Hong Jong-hyun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/39a9e849594dda379d892b2a6bef464901572f61ca7b136f4b043a30b50cd0af7d253aa1dcc5e3f4cd6c5ea72f0f11705682abe6aa80f629855e173b413f02e907b6bc156019a1799bea59c853bb38ad14c601eefc850c88402581bb82c5b55ae405777f2e271170c9edcfbc9aa80f9b_3.jpg

The 3rd prince. The eldest son of King Taejo with Queen Yoo. Makes no secret that he wants the throne and works side by side with his mother to achieve this goal.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: He is very antagonistic towards the Crown Prince.
  • Break Them by Talking: Likes to talk down and humiliate the people around him
  • Big Brother Bully: To most of his siblings, especially So. He likes to pick on their weaknesses and manipulate them.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: He fights well with both a bow and arrow as well with a sword, but the former is clearly his favored weapon.
  • Dies Wide Open: His eyes are giving a desperate stare as he dies.
  • Evil Prince: The cruellest of all the princes.
  • Flaw Exploitation: His favourite method to undermine others and have them in check.
  • Guyliner: He's never seen without eyeliner.
  • It's All About Me: Just like his mother, the one thing he wants is power for himself, consequences be damned.
  • I Have Your Wife: Threatens Hae Soo's life to keep Wang So in line and have him do the dirty work
  • Kick the Dog: Another one of his hobbies. He especially likes to do this to Wang So. Case in point: during Eun's birthday party he realised that So looked particularly happy so, he manipulated his youngest brother and Hae Soo into making So remove his mask as part of a birthday wish making So feel humiliated and hurt.
  • Makeup Is Evil: He is the only prince who wears eyeliner, probably to signify his evilness.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Oh so much, just like the previous entry showed, he could get people to do what he wanted by making it seem like he's being a caring brother.
  • Never My Fault: Blames his brothers for any setback in his plans, blames his mother for pushing him to do all the scheming and plotting, blames Hae Soo for his guilt and paranoia, accusing her of bringing bad luck never once realising that he could have chosen to, you know, not do the things he did.
  • Puppet King: What his mother wishes him to be
  • Smug Snake: Again, so much. He likes to flaunt his evil deeds on his enemies' faces, mocking them for falling for his traps and schemes.
  • The Straight and Arrow Path: His weapon is a bow and arrow.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He and Wook both stand 6 feet and both of them are certainly good looking.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: The tallest of the princes along with Wook and certainly the most ruthless and is overall unpleasant.
  • Villainous BSoD: After taking the throne and ordering the death of one his younger brothers, his paranoia and guilt start to show increasingly to the point he isolates himself and becomes obsessed with religion, seeking to appease the "spirits" of those he harmed.
  • White Shirt of Death: Dies while wearing a white robe.

     Wang Won
Portrayed by: Yoon Sun-woo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/50e99429cf81a46885dba75c3be072b8b16965ca1dcee8e523c6bdb3eefab37add6854af94e9bf3f20e906b4b0c6f702a14c822c589fbada01e1239e6db51033399e65f8b08327161878e150b44d45006172caf0cbfda4002eb83c53e44902bf326ff8df469b11150ece440e2f1e3d57.jpg

The 9th prince. He's closest to Yo and actively helps him in his quest for the throne.

  • Alliterative Name: Wang Won.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Although he was rather unrepentant about the pain he caused to his family, by the end it is proved that he actually cared a lot for Chae Ryung. Though that didn't stop him from putting her in danger.
  • Haughty "Hmph": He is just so fond of doing the "tch" kind. He does this after So reveals his scarred face to the other brothers for the first time and then storms out, while pointing out that So has a lot of pride.
  • Smug Snake: Even though half the plans he works with are his eldest brother's, he still likes to act as if he's the smartest and best amongst his siblings.
  • The Starscream: He prefers to stick with the brother who seems to have the most power. Regardless, he only tries to save his own skin or get more power at their expense.

     Wang Eun
Portrayed by: Byun Baek-hyun {EXO)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/445d418f138dc9744d1037f9022e3c36550e704e66b512f3d2cf600e8d4bcc771dafd5c83df95556bb0c313eef038c454646bab72d4d13efad2e39d814827a823195aef5a85ed35383c66ca6038f28179cb8bd10d1cf2df8f2779a2199b32ed3ff3ba8fe19984f6f468c0dd8974a0612.jpg

The 10th prince. His family is quite influential and has little to no interest in the political scene in the palace.

     Baek Ah
Portrayed by: Nam Joo-hyuk
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aa8cae6b5a91c09eb4d5b09d16c41040fd50ceed8907cd51979d37614867660c4e311851f1e709bfa7b8bf56f73d0d219d3d9fefbc6256f7bdbf9170e4ad28339b146ff1533eeaf52962428ecbc061a6b4bbaa28253ab0c16be474d10ed08aeaa114f94e936e72c37358853ec89add74.jpg

The 13th prince. Son of King Taejo with a lady from the Silla clan, once one of the most powerful clans but that later on lost their influence, which is the reason that while he's a prince, he doesn't have the same status as the rest of his brothers and has more freedom.

  • Cartwright Curse: The two women he loved in the series both never made it out alive.
  • Hopeless Suitor: For Lady Hae. Due to his family losing status he couldn't ask for her hand and then he find out she was in love with his older brother Wook.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Even though he couldn't marry her, he visited and looked after Lady Hae, entertaining her with music and conversation. He worried about her health and the fact that Wook was falling for Hae Soo, something he called them out on.
  • Like Brother and Sister: With Hae Soo. The two were best friends and looked out for each other.
  • Nice Guy: One of the most genuinely sweet guys the show had. He looked after his brothers, especially Eun and Jung, and was supportive of So, as well as Soo.
  • Odd Name Out: The only prince who doesn't go by Wang.
  • Pretty Boy: In-Universe, more than once is pointed out that he's one of the best looking of the princes.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The sensitive to So's manly man. He rather play music and draw than learn about the military and fighting.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Woo Hee. His family was the reason she lost her country and even when they manage to spend time together, there are several circumstances that separate them and ultimately drive her to death
  • Taking the Bullet: He gets in the middle of the king and Woo Hee, letting her stab him. Luckily, the wound is not life-threatening and because of the sudden collapse of the king, no one saw or realised there was an assassination attempt

     Wang Jung
Portrayed by: Ji Soo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/266b575a7c99492f70fdfdc988d9610dda1f53c1a0f7f74143baf77ebccb6bdfc2d59061b858edbc68e5a0e9c460684ec1bd6c1ab6341750c4e08916eec5da18fbc83b41181842a4176cbadfcd66ed219547116c2e1bf2ef812b87bb27a84543c1f602c7f4eda70dc9b81bba051c6063.jpg

The 14th prince. The third son of King Taejo with Queen Yoo, and the full brother to Yo and So. He's the youngest of the princes.

  • Did Not Get the Girl: An interesting case. He didn't manage to win Hae Soo's heart but he was able to marry her and was with her till the end.
  • Hopeless Suitor: For Hae Soo. Same as Eun, she saw him as a dear friend and a young sibling but he was romantically interested in her. Unlike Eun, though, he did try to keep his distance.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: Since young, his greatest desire was to be a formidable fighter, however, he tends to get in his head and has to be rescued or protected.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Even though he knows that would make her unattainable for him, he tries to find ways to have Hae Soo marry Wook (her first love) and then, years later, marries her himself as a way to take her out of the palace to give her some peace in her final days.
  • My Beloved Smother: He loves his mother, but she's quite overbearing and overprotective of him which wouldn't be that much of a problem if she didn't punish or outright destroy anyone who she believes looked at him the wrong way.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: So deliberately isolates their mother to himself during her final hours.
  • Oblivious Younger Sibling: Not as much as Eun, but he truly had no real idea of what were Yo's plans or intentions. As the story progresses he starts learning more but not enough.
  • Warrior Prince: Much like So, he is known as an excellent combatant.

     Yeon Hwa
Portrayed by: Kang Han-na
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/74d332a1d5f5ad72bfd169b113a8ae410ef6c91d63dbcb863f400f86a8970b57eeb97fad804da03327b1300a71293fdab6de7f9fc2ef1490ba8a24f7bb6e1597b48aa19ace74f358beeebe5feaf3c4e1c0605407b2b1c53ec577b4eb72f77e6a326f753790c0a15f0ac2c3fa61a96811.jpg

Daughter of King Taejo and Queen Hwangbo. Full sister to Wang Wook.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Always appear regal and is a very manipulative and overall nasty person.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She pretends that she is a considerate and elegant lady but, in reality, she is just a mean-spirited envious scheming woman.
  • Determinator: She doesn't give up on her goal of reaching power, not even when the odds are against her.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She tends to put on a facade as a well-mannered princess that wants nothing more than to please her elders, especially in front of the King. But, when she's alone with someone she dislikes, the facade comes off and she shows her true colours.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Though she tries to hide it, it's obvious that she resents Hae Soo for winning the heart of So, even though she was the one who got to marry him.
  • Jerkass
  • Politically-Active Princess: She's quite clear about her goals, either she'll be a kingmaker and place her brother on the throne or she will be Queen and wield the power herself
  • Silk Hiding Steel: She may not know how to fight, but when it comes to schemes and manipulation she's amongst the best.
  • Unwanted Spouse: If Wang So wanted the support of the Court and the clans, then he had to marry Yeon Hwa. He made it clear that she was the Queen to the country, but she would never have his heart.
  • We Can Rule Together: Was offered this by Yo and she offered it to So.

     King Taejo
Portrayed by: Jo Min-ki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/94f2855f75b2a4a7412a48eaf558e1af5c77e8c27f14b8108c7faefd36cab5de9fb17a65bf92414a7b38972e2ee5a3d1aaf47f70f7b269b0e42b29918dff6303f7fccf6ba7dffeadcae89ba8cdc53f6a1a09b07e4410061fc65606aa7caa002a67e6f0824d5c2b3a2b08d613ded4cd7c_1.jpg

The first king of Goryeo.

  • Founder of the Kingdom: He unified the Three Kingdoms and founded Goryeo
  • King on His Deathbed: By mid-story, he collapsed and from then on the palace is in disarray. He only has Hae Soo by his side and leaves her with instructions regarding the succession of the throne while several of his children are poised to take it by force the instant they hear he's passed away.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Some of his children died before him.
  • Parents as People: He loves his children, however, as king there are certain things he needs to do to ensure that he can keep the throne and so he has to think of the wellbeing of the country before the happiness of his children or his own.
  • Parental Neglect: Not the worst example (he does keep tabs on his children and provides for them when he deems it necessary, like with Wang So and the masks he ordered for him) but he also won't win father of the year. He's rather distant and in more than one occasion fails to realise how much damage he's done because he never formed a constant interaction with them.

     Queen Yoo
Portrayed by: Park Ji-young
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/98ea5d8e09784ffccd93c7d9be04a9875532bc2e989fd438dcc2814f5389969274c95d8145d2d1e860780d4cbc3cd785c0a1ee9b2b290977476cf8d6ab6b700c52b0cb9a28bfd03bcd135ea64c3ff74c7fa26005a9dc1e12a6d9cf5808024aa9c3cfc9f2311579fac8af5810d5fb22e5.jpg

One of the many wives of the king, also one of the most influential and powerful.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Always appear regal and is a despicable human being.
  • The Chess Master: She's the one that gives Yo the foundation for his plots, providing the resources and thinking out the possible outcomes to their traps and how to spin it if there was a negative result.
  • Evil Matriarch: While the king is still very much alive, she has the palace under her control and has destroyed the lives of the people that have angered her or one her beloved sons.

  • Cryptic Conversation: A master of this. He never truly reveals anything to the frustration of many around him, especially to Hae Soo.

  • Fish out of Temporal Water: It seems he went through the same thing as Ha Jin but it happened when he was younger, he drowned as a kid and was dead for a day before waking up. He says that because he was a child he doesn't quite remember what exactly happened but he still has some of his memories about what the future is like so he sometimes speaks of things that are yet to be created, like airplanes.
