Teams

Team Clantail

    Clantail

Clantail/Nene Ono

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clantail.png

A magical girl whose lower body is permanently some kind of animal due to her powers. Clantail is one of the leaders of the teams in Restart. Also the straight man in her own team. She tends to mediate any internal conflicts, and tries her best to act mature and handle the situation whenever possible.

She survives the events of Restart and reappears in Breakdown.

Her ability is to transform the lower half of her body into different animals. This can range to things such as deer and horses (her most common form), or things such as jellyfish, spiders, or other creatures.

  • The Leader: She's the levelheaded leader of her particular team.
  • Mama Bear: She functions as one to her entire team. She cares for them and will not let any of them come into harm.
  • Nice Girl: No matter how much her teammates fight, she never stops caring for them.
  • Put on the Bus: Invoked; Shadow Gale notes in ACES that Pfle left Clantail out of her future plans so she could live a normal life.
  • Take Up My Sword: After Pechka's death, Clantail vows to remember her former teammate by learning to cook and making her favorite foods.
  • Team Mom: She often mediates and stops any fights between her teammates, the primary offenders being Rionetta and Miyokata.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite her mature personality, Clantail is actually only in middle-school.

    Pechka

Pechka/Chika Tatehara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pechka.png

A 2nd year Junior High school magical girl. Pechka has been a magical girl for over a year now. Most of the time, she spends her activities helping others, and is generally a very happy, if shy, person. Pechka feels very confident as her magical girl form, since she is quite shy as her human form.

She is the tenth Magical Girl to die, taking Melvile's harpoon for Clantail in order to protect her.

Her ability is to create really delicious food. To actually use her powers, she has to touch something for about five minutes, and then it'll transform into the most delicious food she can think of.

  • Cowardly Lion: She's afraid of fighting despite the fact that she has the same physical strength as any other magical girl. However, if her teammates are in risk of dying, she will react. This is thanks to Nokko's emotion manipulation: Pechka can actually fight, but Nokko used her magic to make Pechka too scared to join in.
  • Cowardly Sidekick: At first, she was there just to fill a team slot. She can't fight, she can't help them progress in any way. She does, however, cook some delicious meals to keep team spirit up.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: She has a huge crush on a boy in her school's baseball team, but the boy in question never seems to notice her. She only starts making progress towards developing a connection with him not long before she's killed.
  • Frying Pan of Doom: Her designated weapon in the game is a frying pan. Unconventional, but it's as effective as any other weapon when Pechka gets around to bashing monsters.
  • The Heart: Pechka does her best to cheer up her teammates during the moments where it seems like all hope is lost.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She sacrifices herself for Clantail, using her own body as shield and taking the harpoon that was meant for her teammate.
  • The Load: Convinced initially that she's this to Team Clantail due to her shyness and seeming lack of fighting skill. She gets better later.
  • Meaningful Name: A "pechka" is a type of Russian oven, fitting for a magical girl with a chef theme.
  • Nice Girl: Pechka is kind and considerate to the other magical girls.
  • The Nose Knows: Pechka was able to smell the invisible harpoon aimed at Clantail's back, ultimately saving the latter's life.
  • Punny Name: Her magical girl name in Japanese, Pechika, is a play on "Pechka" (a kind of Russian oven) and her real name "Chika."
  • Say My Name: In Unripe Duet, when her best friend Cappuchino is brutally killed by Cranberry.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Is her magical girl alias spelled "Pechika" or "Pechka"?
  • Supreme Chef: Her magic makes whatever food she creates incredibly delicious.
  • Survivor Guilt: She regrets having her friend protect her from Cranberry while she could do nothing. We get to see this in Unripe Duet, and it is unbelievably heartbreaking.
  • Taking the Bullet: Pechka lets herself get stabbed by Melville while shielding Clantail.
  • Team Chef: Thanks to her food-based magic, she's the designated cook for her team. This helps improve their morale and save candies (an in-game currency) they would otherwise spend on food.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: She believes her magic to be useless in a fight, not just because "turning something into food" doesn't lend itself well to a battle: she has to keep contact with whatever wants to turn to food for at least five minutes. Not very helpful during the fast pace of a fight.

    Nonako Miyokata

Nonako Miyokata/Anna Sarizae

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nonako_miyokata.png

A magical girl dressed as a shrine maiden. Miyokata Nonako is a member of Team Clantail. Always the one that's the more optimistic of the group. She often gets into fights with fellow teammate Rionetta, and is very protective of Pechka. She also has a tendency to make friends with the various creatures found in the game.

She is the eighth Magical Girl to die, with a monster getting inside her and destroying her organs.

Her power is to make friends with any animal. She can befriend any animal regardless of species. For the purposes of her power, however, humans don't count as animals, so this only works on non-sentient beings.

  • The Beastmaster: Her magic makes it so she can gain the trust of any and all animals. This connection means she can ask her animal friends to aid her.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: She's destroyed from the inside by a demon.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Despite all their arguing, Miyokata eventually becomes close friends with Rionetta.
  • Gratuitous English: In the original Japanese, she often peppers her speech with English. Justified as she isn't Japanese, she just really loves Japanese culture.
  • Keep It Foreign: The English translation has her using French phrases when she would have used English ones.
  • Miko: Her magical girl outfit is based around a shrine maiden's, what with the kimono and (albeit trouserless) hakama.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: She speaks with a non-Japanese accent, despite trying her best to use one.

    Rionetta

Rionetta/Rio Kujou

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rionetta.png

The Puppet magical girl. Rionetta is a member of Team Clantail. She's the more stubborn and rough headed member of the group. Easily angered when things go wrong. At the same time, she's also a very good fighter, being in charge of fighting any enemies that Team Clantail faces, alongside Clantail herself. She physically resembles a puppet, up to the wooden skin and joints, when she is transformed.

She is the ninth Magical Girl to die, with Melvile crushing her neck after Rio betrays her in order to protect Pechka.

Her power is to manipulate dolls with her thoughts. She can manipulate any humanoid, non-living object to walk, attack, run, etc.

  • The Big Guy: Within Team Clantail, Rionetta is the one who does most- if not all- of the physical fighting.
  • Connected All Along: She previously worked for Pfle's grandfather.
  • Face–Heel Turn: She was bribed by Melville to turn against the other players, forcing her to help with Melville's murder spree.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Despite all her arguments with Miyokata, she does genuinely come to care for her teammate's well-being.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's generally rude and sarcastic, but if you manage to win her friendship she will become a very loyal ally.
  • Mama Bear: She becomes rather protective of Pechka, after spending some time with her.
  • Meaningful Name: Her magical girl name, Rionetta, is taken from the word "marionette", and one of the kanji that makes up her given name, Rio, can be read as "cord/string" (緒 o) or "thread" (緒 itoguchi). Makes sense for a magical girl themed around puppets and dolls.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She gets progressively more stressed out about her Face–Heel Turn, to the point where it eats her up inside. This escalates further when an argument causes Miyokata to die in an accident.
  • Near-Villain Victory: She almost killed Ripple in "Magical Illegal Girl" but was stopped by Cranberry because Ripple hadn't been tested yet.
  • Only in It for the Money: Rionetta makes it clear that she's mainly in the game for the monetary reward. Episodes reveals that this is because she is trying to pay off the money her father owes to the Yakuza.
  • People Puppets: Her doll manipulation magic includes the ability to control human corpses.
  • Redemption Equals Death: After indirectly causing Miyokata's death, she vows to protect Pechka from being killed by Melville. Rionetta is killed for her efforts.
  • Villainous BSoD: She breaks down after accidentally causing the death of Miyokata.
  • Trauma Button: "Magical Illegal Girl" shows that, even if she didn't exactly remember Cranberry or her tests, just being approached by Cranberry was enough to terrify Rionetta into fleeing.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Being able to control puppets has its uses and can be quite powerful in its own right. However, its specific enough for it to be rendered useless in most circumstances, something that even Rionetta lampshades. She compensates by being a competent physical fighter.
  • Wolverine Claws: Her weapon of choice are a set of long, sharp claws.

Team Daisy

    Magical Daisy

Magical Daisy/Kiku Yakumo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magical_daisy.png

A semi-retired college aged magical girl. Magical Daisy has been a magical girl since she was in Junior High. Since then, the Magical Kingdom has created a (completely exaggerated and fictional) anime series based on her actual magical girl activities, in order to mask and hide her true job of protecting the city.

Since she's gone to college though, she's lessened her magical girl activities somewhat. Mostly because of work, and rent, and other real life issues that might get in the way. Though, she still finds time to do some Magical girl work every now and then.

She is the first Magical Girl to die, with her Daisy Beam being reflected back at her by a Powered Skeleton, resulting in her getting a hole in her chest.

Her ability is to shoot lethal Daisy Beams. The Daisy Beam is kind of like a laser beam that disintegrates objects on a molecular level. Shooting it with her finger produces a concentrated beam, while shooting it with her palm produces a beam with a larger radius. She rarely uses it at all, though, since her beams can kill anything it shoots.

  • Ascended Fanboy: She was a huge fan of magical girls as a kid. She eventually become one herself and even got her own anime.
  • Blood Knight: Downplayed example. While she doesn't explicitly look to get into fights, she does get excited whenever she's in an actual fight and gets to use her full potential.
  • Calling Your Attacks: She punctuates her attacks with names, even if said attacks are just with her limbs: Daisy Kick, Daisy Punch, and, of course, her Daisy Beam.
  • Decoy Protagonist: The audience is introduced to the story from Daisy's point-of-view, which may make readers think she's the main protagonist of this arc. She's actually the first to be killed off to show that dying in the game leads to death in real life.
  • Genre Throwback: Her name and design are callbacks to classic magical girl properties of the 1980s, such as Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel and Magical Emi, the Magic Star. The backstory given to her in the Magical Daisy anime is also reminiscent of the standard backstory for those show's protagonists: a princess from a magical kingdom being sent to live on Earth and help humanity.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: She's killed when a skeleton with a reflecting capability reflected her own Daisy Beam back at her.
  • Jaded Washout: Even after retiring, she's still technically a magical girl, but her introduction shows that life didn't quite pan out for her in a meaningful way. Having spent so much time as a magical girl as a teenager didn't leave her much room to make any meaningful friendships, nor could she study hard enough to get into a good college or develop enough skills to get a regular job to earn money and support her family.
  • The Leader: Her many years of experience as a magical girl makes her an easy pick as her group's leader.
  • Retired Badass: She was a skilled and talented magical girl for many years before she retired in order to focus on her studies.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Before most of the other characters are introduced, she's killed by a random Mook in the game, leading to her real life death shortly thereafter. It serves to show the fatal repercussions of the game they've been forced into.

    Nokko

Nokko/Noriko Nonohara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nokko.png

A fourth grader who's been a magical girl for over six years. The youngest of the group in Restart, yet at the same time, the one with the most years under her belt. Nokko prefers to act in the background, as she can't exactly fight as well as the other girls. However, she is willing to show initiative whenever the need is required of her.

She is the thirteenth and final Magical Girl to die, impaling herself with her shovel so the remaining players can live.

Her ability is to change the feelings of those around her. She can cause a person to feel a certain emotion, then enhance the effect, and spread it around to others as well. The person being manipulated probably won't realize they are being manipulated, and will probably try to justify their own emotional state.

  • Alliterative Name: Her civilian name, when rendered in English, begin with "no" for both her family and given names: Noriko Nonohara.
  • Atrocious Alias: She regrets choosing the name Nokko as her magical girl alias; she was four-years-old when she picked it, but magical girl names can't be changed once given or chosen.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's fairly shy and quiet, but is a master manipulator when she wants to be. She can easily influence an entire group to become more confident or scared. She almost succeeded in her plan of having everyone kill each other, but they eventually figured out that she was the Evil King.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Nokko's appearance, young age, and shyness are just part of the reasons why no one really suspects that she's the Evil King. This might also be true for the audience: most of the arc is written from her point-of-view and any mention as to her true intentions is left out of her sections up until the reveal.
  • Emotion Control: She can use her magic to cause someone to feel a particular emotion, enhance emotions, and even spread that emotion to other people. The target of her magic usually won't realize that she's the one behind the feeling, and even if they did, she could just as easily distract them with an emotion other than suspicion.
  • The Heart: She's the kindest member of Team Daisy. Later promoted to The Leader after Daisy's death.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She commits suicide in order to ensure that the remaining players would be able to win the game without becoming killers themselves.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Thanks to her emotion control, she can usually influence the group toward a certain direction. Not to mention it takes a lot of skill to know the right emotion to seed at any particular time to get the result she wants; she can't control people's actions, after all.
  • Meido: Her magical girl outfit is a maid uniform and she's the youngest of the cast.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Nokko is the youngest of the magical girls in Restart, in both looks and actual age.
  • Tragic Hero: She truly wants the best for everyone around her, but unfortunately, she has to kill them off if she ever wants to save her terminally ill mother.
  • Trapped in Villainy: She was assigned the role of the Evil King, meaning she has to kill the other participants to escape. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, but she also wants to be there for her mother, so she goes along with it.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about her somewhat, due to being the mastermind behind the killings.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Despite her young age, she's been a magical girl for six years and knows a thing or two about how to operate and survive in a hostile enviroment.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: She looks innocent and unassuming, but she's a clever schemer as the Evil King; she uses her emotion manipulation magic on everyone to keep them from suspecting her of being the traitor.

    Genopsyko Yumenoshima

Genopsyko Yumenoshima/Karin Sonoda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/genopsycho_yumenoshima.png

The sci-fi magical girl. Genopsyko is a member of Team Daisy, and good friends with @Meow-Meow as well. She's often the first to act, and is very much excited to jump into danger. Partially because of her invincible suit.

She is the third Magical Girl to die, being slashed by Akane's sword after she claims to be a musician, accidentally triggering the other girl's PTSD.

Her power is to block any attack with her magical suit. When she puts her visor down, her suit will never take any damage from anything. It doesn't matter what hits it either.

  • Hot-Blooded: Definitely will rush in to danger head on, regardless of what it may mean for her.
  • Never Found the Body: She is seemingly killed, but her body disappears an instant after. It's later revealed that Rionetta's used her magic to move Genopsyko's corpse out of the way.
  • No-Sell: Her suit renders all attacks moot, making her basically indisputable so long as the visor's down.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Is the first part of her magical girl name "Genopsycho" or "Genopsyko"?
  • Starving Artist: Comes with being a part-time manga artist.
  • Too Dumb to Live: When Akane asks her if she is the Musician, her response is basically to make fun of such a person whose sword is already drawn. This ends as well as you'd expect.
  • True Companions: She's quite close with the other members of Team Daisy, especially Himari.

    @Meow-Meow

@Meow-Meow/Himari Tanahashi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/meow_meow.png

The Chinese dress magical girl. @Meow-Meow is part of Team Daisy, and is actually the only one of them who's probably never heard much of Magical Daisy herself. Meow-Meow is pretty easygoing, and cares a lot about her friends.

She is the sixth Magical Girl to die, being burnt alive by the Great Dragon after Rionetta puppeteers Genopsyko's corpse to throw her into the ring of fire.

Her power is to trap things inside paper talismans. Using scrolls, she can capture any inanimate object, no matter how large, and release it again whenever she wishes to.

  • Anime Chinese Girl: Despite not being Chinese, her magical girl form is based around a stereotypical Chinese outfit: her costume is a variation on a qipao, she wears an odango hairstyle, she mainly uses martial arts while fighting, and she speaks in broken Japanese.
  • The Big Guy: Out of Team Daisy, Meow-Meow is their go to fighter for physical battles.
  • Dub Name Change: Her name in Japanese is @NyanNyan, but Yen Press' tranlation changes it to @Meow-Meow (which makes sense since nyan is meow in Japanese). @娘々
  • Embarrassing Nickname: The at mark (@) in her name was caused by a random roulette by her friends when she became a magical girl. She wishes she could get rid of it.
  • Heroic BSoD: After the death of a particular teammate, she becomes unable to fight much, if at all.
  • Mama Bear: She is very protective of her teammates.
  • True Companions: She's close with all of Team Daisy and fiercely protective of them.
  • Verbal Tic: In the original Japanese, she ends most of her sentences with the stereotypical Chinese accent "aru". The Yen Press translation left out the tic, giving her a general mild Chinese accent instead.

Team Pfle

For trope lists for Pfle and Shadow Gale, visit Recurring.
    Masked Wonder

Masked Wonder/Konomi Mita

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/masked_wonder.png

The Embodiment of Justice, the magical girl, Masked Wonder! A member of Team Pfle, Masked Wonder is a hero first and foremost. Embracing the magical girl lifestyle as a chance to do some good, she is probably the most heroic of all magical girls. She will help regardless of what happens, and won't back down from a fight.

She is the second Magical Girl to die, Melvile smashing her head in with a rock.

Her power is to change any object's weight. She can make anything, herself, another person, or another object, as light as a feather, or as heavy as a jetliner.

  • Connected All Along: One of the Episodes short stories revealed that Wonder was Nemurin's cousin.
  • Hot-Blooded: She most definitely is, what with her enthusiastic nature and her urge to do good.
  • In the Name of the Moon: After winning a fight, she will say a particular line then strike a pose.
  • Victory Pose: Whenever she wins a fight, she will strike a particular pose after saying a particular line.

Team Bell

    Detec Bell

Detec Bell/Shinobu Hioka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/detec_bell.png

A Detective-style magical girl who's actually a Private Investigator in real life. She's the leader of Team Bell, and has yearned to be a detective since she was just a young girl. While not very good at fighting, she tries to use her intelligence and sleuthing skills to help her team progress.

She is the seventh Magical Girl to die, Melvile ambushing her from the back to prevent her and the others from recovering their lost memories.

Her ability is to talk to buildings. By giving a kiss to a part of a building, she can cause a face to appear, enabling communication. The building's personality is just like any other human: you never know what you're going to get. Most of the time this is helpful, as many buildings see everything that happens. Unfortunately, this only applies to buildings in the real world; the in-game buildings can't give any information.

  • Ascended Fanboy: Her love of detective fiction motivated her to become a private investigator. When she's not undertaking magical girl work, she's solving real life cases as a human.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: In her final moments, Bell has the face of a building eat her phone and store it until Lazuline comes by, spitting it out then so that the others could get their memories back.
  • Guile Hero: She possess minimal if any hand-to-hand combat skills, so she uses her intelligence to help her team solve any quests they might have. She also uses her detective experience to weed out which one of them is a traitor.
  • Mama Bear: Although the target of her Mama Bearness is a better fighter than her, she has protective instincts towards Lapis Lazuline.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: She's a smart detective and is supposed to be good at figuring things out, but Pfle is smarter and solves more problems while Lazuline has a better intuition and eye for details. In Bell's case, her best moments involve finding people in the real world since her magic isn't useful to her within the game.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Is the first part of her magical girl name spelled "Detick" or "Detec"?
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Her power to talk to buildings is incredibly helpful in real life, but the buildings in the game world are coded to refuse to give Bell any information, rendering her magic useless.

    Cherna Mouse

Cherna Mouse/Tama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cherna_mouse.png

The hamster-suited magical girl. Cherna's favorite pastime seems to be nibbling on her gigantic sunflower seed, which is apparently part of her costume, so it won't exactly run out. As a member of Team Bell, Cherna is rather quiet and reserved, loyal only to her teammates. However, she displays the most affection to Melville.

She is the fifth Magical Girl to die, being eliminated due to having the lowest amount of Magical Candies.

Her powers is to make herself really big. She uses this size changing ability often to become a large gigantic version of herself. Useful for combat, since while magical girls could probably take down skyscrapers, if that skyscraper happened to have a strength of a magical girl, then it would render it moot.

  • The Big Guy: In both a figurative and literal sense, Cherna is the main fighter of Team Bell due in no small part to her ability to become gigantic.
  • Godzilla Threshold: When Pfle actually has Cherna by the ropes with her Spider Tank, Cherna increases her size even more, up to three times the size of the Spider Tank.
  • Humanity Ensues: Her civilian identity is that of a pet hamster named Tama. Thanks to the way magical girl transformations work, she assumes a human-like form after transforming.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Is the first part of her name spelled with "ch" or just a "c"?
  • Third-Person Person: She always refers to herself as "Cherna", the first part of her magical girl name.

    Lapis Lazuline

Lapiz Lazuline II/Blue Comet/Ruri Yoneda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lapis_lazuline.png

The Blue Magical Girl, Lapis Lazuline! She's a very cheerful girl who's very much always positive. She tends to call people by little nicknames that she makes herself. Also loves posing like a superhero. Lazuline is a member of Team Bell, and she looks up to "Belly" in almost every way, wanting to become a cool detective just like her.

She is the eleventh Magical Girl to die, passing away from her wounds sustained from fighting Melvile.

Her powers is to use gems to teleport. She can instantly teleport anywhere where there's a gem. Of course, she could also throw gems to teleport this way too.

  • The Ace: She's extremely skilled at fighting, more so than most of the other magical girls within the second arc.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Anybody she becomes close with will be given a nickname by her, oftentimes shortening their name and adding "-y", like Detec Bell being referred to as "Belly".
  • Ass-Kicking Pose: She usually poses when introducing herself or after winning a fight.
  • Badass Adorable: Lazuline is one of the sweetest members of the group while also being an absolutely deadly fighter.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Holds out Melville, stunning her so Clantail could deal the killing blow.
  • The Heart: She's this for Team Bell, due to her likeable nature.
  • Hero Worship: She respects Detec Bell and wants to become a cool detective like her.
  • Genki Girl: She's always perky and excited, even during bleak situations.
  • In the Name of the Moon: She says a battle chant before she poses.
  • Legacy Character: The name "Lapis Lazuline" was actually given to her by her mentor, the First Lapis Lazuline. The Second Lazuline's actual magical girl name is Blue Comet.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Lazuline is a very skilled fighter, probably among the best of the bunch within the second arc. While she doesn't seem to be faster than your average magical girl, her teleportation magic more than makes up for that.
  • Nice Girl: She's friendly to everyone and is liked by most in return.
  • The Nicknamer: She gives cute nicknames to almost everyone she meets, such as "Belly" for Detec Bell and "Melvy" for Melville.
  • No Name Given: Her human name has not been revealed, which is odd since Detec Bell has met her in human form and her father. Averted- the double stage show detailing more of her past reveals it as “Ruri Yoneda”.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: You should be very afraid of her if she refers to you by your actual name and not a nickname. If she does this, it means she's angry or sees you as threat.
  • Tragic Mistake: She had nothing to do with Cranberry, nor did she have any idea who Cranberry was when Pfle realized all of the magical girls had most likely been tested by Cranberry in the past. Snow White learned Keek wanted the First Lapis Lazuline, but the documents Keek had never said anything about the name being passed on to a new girl; even by Keek's warped logic, the Second Lazuline had no right or reason to be involved in the game.
  • Teleportation: Her gem-based magic lets her teleport from one location to another in an instant.
  • Translator Buddy: She serves as a translator for Melville due to Melville speaking with heavy accent that the other magical girls can't understand.

    Melville

Melville/Mashiro Kuji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/melville.png
The Elf Magical Girl. Melville is apart of Team Bell, and is a quiet one mostly. This is also due to her actually having a strange manner of speech that is nigh incomprehensible. Though occasionally she can say things that make sense. She relies on Lazuline to translate her speech for her.

She is the twelfth Magical Girl to die, Clantail slashing her to pieces as revenge for the deaths of her teammates.

Her ability is to change her color at will. She can alter the color of herself and objects around her, oftentimes creating a chameleon effect.

  • The Ace: She's an incredibly skilled combatant, thanks in part to the brutal training regime Cranberry had her undertake.
  • Aloof Archer: Her bow is her main weapon of choice and she's rather cold and quiet.
  • Always Someone Better: She admits she'll never be as good as her teacher, Cranberry.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: A variant; in addition to her bow, her arsenal includes a harpoon that she can throw or use in close combat.
  • Flaw Exploitation: Melville won't hesitate to bribe, blackmail, take other magical girls as hostages, or generally resort to all kinds of underhanded tactics if it's for the sake of winning the game.
  • Forest Ranger: She's an elf-like magical girl who uses a bow and arrow, and can perfectly blend in with her surroundings thanks to her magic. The only thing stopping this trope from taking full effect is that she travels to different areas instead of guarding one particular location.
  • Hero Killer: She ranks up one of the biggest body counts in the series, killing Masked Wonder, Cherna Mouse, Detec Bell, Rionetta, Pechka and Lapis Lazuline before Clantail finally kills her. At 7, this is as much kills as both Cranberry (2 shown, probably more offscreen) and Swim Swim (5) combined.
  • Hero Worship: She is obsessed with her mentor, Cranberry, and strives to be like her, up to and including killing indiscriminately.
  • Long-Range Fighter: Her primary weapon is a bow.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Everything she did, she did out of love for Cranberry. This is later subverted when it's revealed Nokko's influence is what truly pushed her to action.
  • Meaningful Name: Her magical girl name is a direct reference to Herman Melville, the author of Moby-Dick. Her given name, Mashiro, contains the character for white (白 shiro), and her last name, Kuji, is short for "kujira", which means "whale" (鯨). She also has a harpoon, seeks revenge, and is killed by a gigantic monster.
  • Pointy Ears: Her magical girl form turns her ears pointy.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: She's an extremely competent fighter, yet has trouble communicating with other people due to her thick accent. Since she's a villain instead of a hero, Melville is an inverted version.
  • The Unintelligible: Her words are often slurred or slightly mispronounced. It's not bad enough that she's completely unintelligible, but she still requires some interpretation. Luckily, Lazuline translates for her.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The murders Melville committed were actually done under Nokko's influence. Melville had no idea Nokko was using her emotion manipulation magic to manipulate her into killing.

Individuals

    Akane

Akane/Akane Fuwa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akane_8.png
The Samurai magical girl. Akane is a loner and, for the most part, doesn't team up with any magical girls. She mostly roams around hunting for "a musician".

She is the fourth Magical Girl to die, being crushed by a building @Meow-Meow drops on her, in order to protect Nokko.

Her power is to cut anything she sees. She can use her sword to cut anything within her field of vision.

  • Katanas Are Just Better: She has a katana as a weapon.
  • Poor Communication Kills: No one bothers to tell her that Cranberry is dead, and thus her quest for revenge is meaningless.
  • Real Name as an Alias: In Japanese, the characters used for her civilian name (茜) and magical girl alias (アカネ) are different, but they both read the same way: "Akane".
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Though she is a skilled Magical Girl, the loss of her family deeply affected her mentally, and she can only speak in a few words at a time.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She's killed before the other characters even learn her name.
  • You Killed My Father: This is her motivation for entering the game. A side story reveals that, before becoming a Magical Girl, Akane lived a peaceful and happy life with her mother and her three sisters. Then all of them were made into Magical Girls and forced to partake in Cranberry’s exam, where she personally murdered all of them. The resulting trauma led to Akane becoming vengeful, and ever since then, she has sought to kill Cranberry and avenge the deaths of her family.

    The Game Master (Major Spoilers)

Keek

The one who brought all the girls into her game world. Keek is a magical girl who wants to reform the Magical Kingdom. Finding only ideal magical girls suited to the task, she arranges a game to test just how pure the magical girls are.

Her power is to do whatever she wants within her personal cyberspace. She can create a digital world, which she can bring people over. In that world, she is effectively God. She can even cancel out other magical girls' powers if they are within her realm.

  • A God Am I: She fancies herself as the god of her own cyberworld. This isn't entirely inaccurate, thanks to her digital based powers enabling her to design a game to suit her exam and personally selecting the magical girls that'll be forced to play it.
  • Big Bad: She's the one responsible for dragging the other magical girls listed above into her cyberspace and enabling the deaths of most of them.
  • Break the Haughty: Mentally broken after receiving a talking to by Snow White.
  • Hate Sink: There's genuinely nothing sympathetic, endearing, or interesting about Keek compared to all the other villainous magical girls. She's a haughty Know-Nothing Know-It-All ready to murder any magical girl that doesn't fit with her ridiculous standards. Even when she learns the Lapis Lazuline she pulled in was the second, and was never taught by Cranberry, she shows no remorse for dragging someone completely innocent into her murder game.
  • Hero Worship: She greatly admires Snow White, and wants to be able to work with her, or at least find another magical girl like her.
  • Gamer Chick: She loves video games, which is in part why she makes a magical girl exam that's essentially an RPG.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: She acts like the final authority on what a magical girl should and shouldn't be, but it's repeatedly demonstrated she has no clue what she's talking about. The episode of Magical Daisy she directed to show the world what an actual magical girl should be like was loathed by the anime's fandom, and she created a killing game to weed out undesirable magical girls based on the fact they were tested by Cranberry when she herself was tested by one of Cranberry's students.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Her logic and words can oftentimes seem logical at first glance, at least if you ignore the fact that she's hosting a game where people murder each other.
  • Physical God: Qualifies as one in her own cyberspace world.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: She realizes that her methods are flawed because she herself is another magical girl who believed in Cranberry's methods.
  • The Unfought: Downplayed. While the protagonists of Restart never meet Keek, she is confronted by Snow White.
  • Villainous Breakdown: She undergoes a massive breakdown after Snow White reveals that her mentor was a supporter of Cranberry, the very same magical girl she hates.
  • Walking Spoiler: Talking about Keek is difficult without bringing up the fact that she's the main antagonist of Restart.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She wants to find the "ideal magical girl", but she goes about it in ways similiar to the the one she hates: forcing innocent magical girls into a situation where they're pitted against each other. This results in the deaths of many magical girls.
  • You Are What You Hate: She holds nothing but contempt for the magical girls who were evaluated by Cranberry; she views them as the "wrong kind" of magical girl and desires nothing but to wipe them out. Then she finds out that her own mentor was also one of Cranberry's students. The shock of realizing she's a product of Cranberry's teachings- albeit indirectly- makes Keek fall into a deep depression.
